Abstract:We propose a novel porous-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) consisting of asymmetrical rectangular air holes in the core and six-ring hexagonal lattice circular air holes in the cladding for achieving low-loss polarization terahertz transmission in a wide frequency range. By assuming TOPAS as the host material, the finite element method (FEM) is used to investigate its properties. The near-zero flattened dispersion of −0.01±0.02 ps/THz/cm is achieved over a frequency range of 1.0–2.0 THz, as well as a high birefringence of 7.1 × 10−2 which can be useful for polarization-maintaining applications. Also, critical parameters such as mode field distribution, effective material loss, confinement loss, and effective mode area are discussed in detail. Abstract:We propose mode couplers and converters based on dual-core hollow-core photonic bandgap fiber (HC-PBGF) structures, which might be potential solutions for integrated all-fiber multiplexers or demultiplexers of a mode-division multiplexed (MDM) transmission system using HC-PBGFs. Coupling properties of LP01 and LP11 mode in the mode coupler are investigated and applied to mode separators and polarization separators. Mode transition from LP01 to LP11 and LP21 mode are demonstrated in the mode converter whose smaller core is expected as input end and matched with single-mode fiber. The coupling between fundamental mode and high-order modes is accomplished through the resonant effect, which is fulfilled by modifying the structure parameter of the smaller core. Such mode converters based on dual-core HC-PBGF could be a promising substitute for the free-space coupling device, which is costly and not suitable for integration design in MDM systems and other hollow-core fiber experiments and applications.
Broad-band robustly single-mode hollow-core PCF by resonant filtering of higher order modes

Abstract:We propose and theoretically analyse a novel hollow-core photonic crystal fibre (PCF) that is engineered so as to strongly suppress higher order modes, i.e., to provide robust LP$_{01}$ single-mode guidance in all the wavelength ranges where the fibre guides with low loss. Encircling the core is a single ring of non-touching glass elements whose modes are tailored to ensure resonant phase-matched coupling to higher-order core modes, causing them to leak at a very high rate into the supporting solid glass sheath. Using a model based on coupled capillary waveguides, as well as full vectorial finite element modelling, we show that this modal filtering effect depends on only one dimensionless geometrical parameter, akin to the well-known $d/{\Lambda}$ parameter for endlessly single-mode solid-core PCF. The design is scalable up to large core sizes and is predicted to deliver LP$_{01}$ mode losses of some $10$s of dB/km in multiple transmission windows, the broadest of which spans more than an octave. At the same time, higher order core modes have losses that are typically $1000$s of times higher than the LP$_{01}$ mode. The fibre is of great potential interest in applications such as high-power laser beam delivery, gas-based nonlinear optics, laser particle delivery, chemical sensing and laser gyroscopes.

Abstract:Arguments are more or less persuasive depending on the values their outcomes promote and demote. This idea, closely related to Perelman’s ideas work on argumentation, has been formally modeled by Bench-Capon in his well-known Value-Based Argumentation Frameworks, based on Dung’s abstract argumentation. In this paper, the question is addressed how arguments about which values are promoted and demoted can be modeled. A proposal is made to model Value-Based Argumentation Frameworks in DefLog, a language that extends Dung’s abstract argumentation, while keeping central definitions such as preferred and stable extensions. Since DefLog allows the modeling of support of support, attack of support, support of attack, and attack of attack, it becomes possible to model arguments about whether a value is promoted or demoted in case an argument is accepted.

Abstract:In this work, a first‐of‐its‐kind design of hollow‐core antiresonant fiber with a double‐clad structure is reported, providing unprecedented ability of high‐order‐mode suppression through enhanced mode filtering effects. The results represent a major step forward in the hollow‐core fiber technology, providing new insight in fiber design and fabrication, laser‐field fiber delivery, and optical fiber sensing. Maintaining high fundamental mode purity in low‐loss single‐ring hollow‐core photonic crystal fiber remains a key challenge. Here a double‐clad anti‐resonant‐reflecting design is reported that, through modal filtering, provides high suppression of higher‐order modes while maintaining a low‐loss fundamental mode. The structure consists of a ring of six thin‐walled capillaries fused to the inner wall of a thicker‐walled capillary that is in turn fused at a single point to the silica outer cladding. Greater than 40 dB m−1 suppression of higher order modes over a 6 nm wide window whose central wavelength can be tuned by adjusting the gas pressure is observed. The novel design paves the way to practical applications of such fibers in high‐quality laser beam delivery and low‐noise optical‐signal transmission.

Abstract:We investigate the characteristics of optical modes in a new designed hollow-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) with large modal separation. The large effective refractive index difference between the adjacent second-order vector modes can be maintained higher than 0.001 within the wavelength range from 1 to 2 μm. The maximum value can arrive 0.01199 between HE21 and TM01 mode at 2 μm. The fundamental mode of the proposed PCF has flat dispersion in a wide spectral range, which can be applied on wideband supercontinuum generation. The influence on the characteristics by the PCF structure has also been investigated. The increase of the size of the central air hole and the duty cycle affects the flatness of the dispersion curve to some extent. Our simulated results could provide an optimized fiber structure for the experimental study on stable transmission of vector modes.
Large-Mode-Area Multi-Resonant All-Solid Photonic Bandgap Fiber with Low Bending Loss and Robust Single-Mode Operation

Abstract:In this paper, we have theoretically and experimentally demonstrated a novel large-mode-area multi-resonant all-solid photonic bandgap fiber (AS-PBGF). Based on the combination of the multi-resonant structure and leakage channel, the structural parameters are specifically designed for conventional applications of fiber lasers around 1 μm wavelength. Through the stack and draw technique, the fiber is fabricated successfully and the hexagon core is measured to be 46 μm in the corner-to-corner direction. The transmission spectrum exhibits a broad bandwidth from 970 nm to 1180 nm in the 3rd photonic bandgap (PBG). Bending loss lower than 0.1 dB/m with a 5-m-length fiber is obtained in the case of bending radius R > 25 cm. By employing the spatially and spectrally resolved imaging (S2) method, robust single-mode (SM) operation of the fiber is verified within the whole PBG. In addition, we also report a phenomenon about the abnormal variation of M2 within the low loss region of the 3rd PBG. The evolution of beam quality within the 3rd PBG appears as a U-shaped curve rather than a constant. Based on the measured M2 and S2 results, a preliminary conclusion about the relationship between the beam quality and SM characteristics in AS-PBGF, which is quite different from that in conventional SIFs, is demonstrated experimentally for the first time.

Abstract:The remarkable recent demonstrations in ultralow loss Inhibited-Coupling (IC) hollow-core photonic crystal fibers (HCPCFs) place them as serious candidates for the next-generation of long-haul fiber optics systems. A hindrance to this prospect, but also to short-haul applications such as micromachining, where stable and high-quality beam delivery is needed, is the challenge to design and fabricate an IC-guiding fiber that combines ultra-low loss, truly and robust single-modeness, and polarization-maintaining operation. Design solutions proposed up to now require a trade-off between low loss and truly single modeness. Here, we propose a novel concept of IC HCPCF for obtaining low-loss and effective single-mode operation. The fiber is endowed with a hybrid cladding composed of a Kagome-tubular lattice (HKT). This new concept of microstructured cladding allows to significantly reduce confinement loss and, at the same time, preserving a truly and robust single-mode operation. Experimental results show a HKT-IC-HCPCF with a minimum loss figure of 1.6 dB/km at 1050 nm and a higher-order modes extinction ratio as high as 47.0 dB for a 10 m long fiber. The robustness of the fiber single-modeness was tested by moving the fiber and varying the coupling conditions. The design proposed herein opens a new route for the accomplishment of HCPCFs that combine robust ultralow loss transmission and single-mode beam delivery and provides new insight into the understanding of IC guidance.

Abstract:Relying on the long-distance mode retention capability of hollow core fibers (HCFs) to achieve particle capture and advancement has become a breakthrough in optical tweezers research. This first requires the HCF to get a balance long distance and pure mode. However, the unique light guide mechanism and complex drawing process make it a difficult question to decrease the number of the allowed modes. In this paper, a hollow core photonic bandgap fiber (HC-PBF) that only supports pure TE 01 mode over 100 nm bandwidth covering the C + L band with the lowest loss of 10.2 dB/km is proposed. The core wall is used as the only control variable to control the coupling position of surface modes (SMs) in the bandgap to filter unwanted modes and achieve stable single-mode transmission in the fiber. The thick core wall allows the fiber to be crimped to a radius of 0.25 mm. Moreover, characteristics such as mode conversion and manufacturing tolerances are also discussed.

Abstract:One of the major trends in optical fiber science is to be able to obtain fibers with large-mode-area (LMA), optimized for various applications such as high power delivery, fiber amplifiers, and fiber lasers. In order to ensure the high beam quality and the ultimate controllability of the damage threshold in the fiber's material, it is required to have a LMA property and of course to operate in a single mode fashion. While the conventional fibers have some difficulties in providing simultaneously LMA, single mode operation, as well as low macro-bending loss characteristics, all-silica holey fibers are highly attractive candidates for realizing LMA single-mode fibers with low bending losses. In this paper, we present a novel type of effectively single-mode holey fibers with effective mode area of about 1400 mum(2), small allowable bending radius as small as 5 cm, good beam quality factor of 1.15, and high confinement losses exceeding 1 dB/m for the higher-order mode at 1.064-mum wavelength.

Abstract:In this paper, a Ge-doping square solid-core photonic bandgap (PBG) fiber is proposed and the effective index of defect mode is investigated. Simulations show that, at the starting wavelength of the defect mode, n/sub effd/ (the effective index of defect mode) changes rapidly due to the PBG effect, which induces large negative dispersion in fiber. This mechanism is different from the mode coupling case in dual-core concentric fibers, and the dispersion characteristic is more robust to structural deviations.

Abstract:A ultra-wideband highly-birefringent Bragg layered photonic bandgap fiber (BL-PBGF) with concave-index cladding is proposed and demonstrated, by incorporating PBG effect with Bragg multilayers for the first time to the best of our knowledge. The proposed BL-PBGF contains honeycomb capillary cladding and elliptical core with horizontal asymmetry for birefringence. By innovatively introducing three modified silica capillary layers with different refractive indices, the cladding with concave-convex refractive index distribution is combined, providing superior characteristics for optical polarization implementation, such as confinement loss, bending loss and birefringence. Results show that the confinement loss stays around 2 dB/km level within ultrawide 180 nm wavelength range, basically 3 times wider than conventional PBGF. The birefringence maintains at the order of 10−3across the entire bandwidth and the maximum value reaches 2.5 × 10−3. The bending loss at 1550 nm is significantly reduced to below one third of the conventional uniform index PBGF when the bending radius is less than 3.5 mm, and maintains below 1 dB/km level when the bending radius is beyond 10 mm. The proposed universal BL-PBGF has great potential in minimized freestanding fiber coil and small footprint fiber optical gyroscope applications.

Abstract:Optical nanofibers confine light to subwavelength scales, and are of interest for the design, integration, and interconnection of nanophotonic devices. Here we demonstrate high transmission (> 97%) of the first family of excited modes through a 350 nm radius fiber, by appropriate choice of the fiber and precise control of the taper geometry. We can design the nanofibers so that these modes propagate with most of their energy outside the waist region. We also present an optical setup for selectively launching these modes with less than 1% fundamental mode contamination. Our experimental results are in good agreement with simulations of the propagation. Multimode optical nanofibers expand the photonic toolbox, and may aid in the realization of a fully integrated nanoscale device for communication science, laser science or other sensing applications.

Abstract:A hollow-core fiber using anisotropic anti-resonant tubes in the cladding is proposed for low loss and effectively single-mode guidance. We show that the loss performance and higher-order mode suppression is significantly improved by using symmetrically distributed anisotropic anti-resonant tubes in the cladding, elongated in the radial direction, when compared to using isotropic, i.e. circular, anti-resonant tubes. The effective single-mode guidance of the proposed fiber is achieved by enhancing the coupling between the cladding modes and higher-order-core modes by suitably engineering the anisotropic anti-resonant elements. With a silica-based fiber design aimed at 1.06 µm, we show that the loss extinction ratio between the higher-order core modes and the fundamental core mode can be more than 1000 in the range 1.0-1.65 µm, while the leakage loss of the fundamental core mode is below 15 dB/km in the same range.

Abstract:We present a study on the potential and challenges of guiding orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes in hollow-core photonic bandgap fibers (HC-PBGFs). Two 19-cell HC-PBGFs with different structural parameters are comparably investigated. The OAM mode properties in a 37-cell HC-PBGF are also discussed to explore the scalability of OAM states. Characteristics of vector modes and OAM modes are comprehensively analyzed with numerical simulations. The results show HC-PBGF with a larger core could effectively support more OAM modes with lower confinement loss and a larger effective area. In addition, HC-PBGF with a deeper and wider photonic bandgap is advantageous for achieving low crosstalk OAM transmission over a broader band-width. 19-cell HC-PBGFs could support OAM modes with purity beyond 0.9, and the value can be further improved by exploiting the 37-cell HC-PBGF.

Abstract:A novel asymmetrical structure of Photonic Crystal Fibers (PCFs) has been proposed in this article. The first ring consists of three big air holes which can confine the propagating mode in the core region. The second ring consists of twelve doped rods with two different diameters which can decrease the difference of refractive index between the core and the cladding in order to provide the large mode area. The third ring consists of eleven air holes to help the higher-order-modes (HOMs) to leak out. The bending properties of proposed fiber are investigated by full vector finite element method with an anisotropic perfectly matched layer. The numerical results show that the effective mode area of the FM of the proposed fiber is as large as 595.02 μm2 with small bending radius of 10 cm at the wavelength of 1064nm. The bending loss of fundamental mode (FM) is 9.884×10−5dB/m, while large bending loss for the high-order mode (HOMs) is 14.685dB/m. Moreover, the loss ratio can reach 1.45×105which can realize the effective and stability single-mode operation. Therefore, the novel fiber has potential application in high-power fiber lasers.

Abstract:The nonlinear effects and laser-induced optical and thermal damage in optical fibers, together with the limitations of beam quality and mode-field area, restrict the power scaling-up of single-mode output for developing high-power fiber lasers in the kilowatt and above range. The design of photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) with large mode areas is an effective way to address this problem. In this paper, the demands and challenges of designing very large-mode-area (VLMA-) PCFs are discussed, including the overall fiber structure design and property simulation, especially the precise definition of single-mode operating conditions of VLMA-PCFs. Finally, an advanced stress-induced polarization-maintaining, Yb-doped, PCF structure with a large mode area realized by introducing both leakage channels and higher order mode-filtering units is proposed and analyzed theoretically, for which a maximum core diameter of 101 and single-mode field diameter of 76.33 at 1064 and a birefringence value orders of magnitude are achieved.
