Abstract:Novel electrospun inorganic-organic nanofiber reinforced anion exchange membranes were developed by incorporating imidazolium functionalized multiwalled carbon nano tubes (FMWCNTs) into imidazolium functionalized polysulfone nanofibers via co-electrospinning. Under a high-voltage electrostatic field, FMWCNT inorganic nanofibers were able to align along the axis of the electrospun nanofibers, thereby solving the problem of easy agglomeration of FMWCNTs in cast-composite anion exchange membrane, synergistic with the polymer nanofibers to reinforce the membranes. Small angle x-ray suggests that ion clusters are more likely to aggregate in a co-electrospun composite membrane, indicating continuous and lower-energy-barrier pathways for hydroxide transport. As a result, composite electrospun membranes exhibit higher OH- conductivity and better single fuel cell performance. With an additive amount of 0.4 wt.%, hydroxide conductivity reaches a maximum value of 67.5 mScm(-1) (30 degrees C). However, the maximum power density (102.5 mW cm(-2)) is much higher than that of the electrospun (2.1 times) and cast (3.3 times) membranes without FMWCNTs. Fibration of polymer and alignment of multiwalled carbon nanotube nanofibers also greatly enhance the membrane strength. For fully hydrated membranes, tensile stress dramatically increases from 5.6 MPa for a cast membrane without FMWCNTs to 24.4 MPa for an electrospun membrane with 0.4 wt.% FMWCNTs addition. The strategy for co-electrospinning of imidazolium functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes/polysulfone presented in this work provides a way to enhance the organic-inorganic interface compatibility, and improve ionic conductivity and mechanical strength of anion exchange membrane simultaneously. Abstract:A novel imidazolium functionalized polysulfone (PSf-Im) based composite anion exchange membrane was prepared by incorporating imidazolium surface-functionalized α-Al2O3 (Al2O3-Im) nanocomposites.The properties of ion exchange capacity,water uptake,swelling ratio and hydroxide conductivity were characterized.The composite membrane with 12％ of Al2O3-Im nanocomposites shows the conductivity of 45 mS/cm which is 41％ higher than that of pristine PSf-Im membrane.And the swelling ratio of the composite membrane is comparable to that of the pristine one.It indicates that the doping of Al2O3-Im nanocomposites can enhance the hydroxide conductivity without sacrificing the dimensional stability of composite membranes.In addition,the composite membrane also shows better alkaline stability than the pristine one.

Abstract:A series of semi-interpenetrating polymer network (sIPN) composite anion exchange membranes were fabricated depending on immobilized linear PVDF and cross-linked polyepichlorohydrin (PECH), 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane, (DABCO) network through in situ synthetic pathway. A cyclic diamine (DABCO) was used as cross-linking agent and simultaneously improved the ion-exchange capacity by amination. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) indicated that the composite membranes exhibited a dense and homogeneous structure. Successful formation of PECH-DABCO copolymer within the sIPN membranes was also confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The PVDF percentage and inherent properties of membranes such as ion exchange capacity (IEC), water uptake (WR), thermal stability, mechanical property, and area resistance were investigated to evaluate their applicability in electrodialysis (ED). The experimental results showed that the composite membrane maintained a good perspective for ED application.

Abstract:Anion exchange membranes (AEMs) are increasingly becoming a popular research area due to their ability to function with nonprecious metals in electrochemical devices. Nevertheless, there is a challenge to simultaneously optimize the dimensional stability and ionic conductivity of AEMs due to the "trade-off" effect. Herein, we adopted a novel strategy of combining filling and cross-linking using functionalized bacterial cellulose (PBC) as a dual-functional porous support and brominated poly(phenylene oxide) (Br-PPO) as the cross-linking agent and filler. The PBC nanofiber framework together with cross-linking can provide a reliable mechanical support for the subsequent filled polymer, thus improving the mechanical properties and effectively limiting the size change of the final quaternized-PPO (QPPO)-filled PBC composite membrane. The composite membrane showed a very low swelling ratio of only 10.35%, even at a high water uptake (81.83% at 20 degrees C). Moreover, the existence of multiple -NR3+ groups in the cross-link bonds between BC and Br-PPO can provide extra OH- ion transport sites, contributing to the increase in ionic conductivity. The final membrane demonstrated a hydroxide ion conductivity of 62.58 mS cm(-1), which was remarkably higher than that of the pure QPPO membrane by up to 235.93% (80 degrees C). The successful preparation of the PBC3/QPPO membrane provides an effective avenue to tackle the trade-off effect through a dual-functional strategy.

Abstract:In this work, the polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) electrospun fibers was applied as robust mechanical support and subsequently functionalized with polydopamine/polyethyleneimine (PDA/PEI) composite, then filled with sulfonated poly (ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) to obtain SPEEK-PDA/PEI@PVDF composite proton exchange membranes. The composite membranes achieved better balance on the mechanical stability and conduction performance, owing to enhanced interface interactions and compatibility between robust PVDF and conductive SPEEK. In wet conditions, the composite membrane exhibited excellent mechanically robust with tensile strength of 34 MPa and elongation at break of almost 200 %. Furthermore, the composite membranes also showed high structure and performance stability during the measurement of proton conductivity and fuel cell performances, it could hold stable proton conductivity of 48 mScm(-1) (at 80 degrees C) and maximum power density of 58.9 mWcm(-2). The durability test further confirmed the super operating stability of composite membrane, only 2.6 % reduction in open circuit voltage was observed during operated at 80 degrees C for 100 h.y

Abstract:In this work, anion exchange membranes based on polymer semi-interpenetrating networks were synthesized and characterized for the first time. The networks are composed of sulfonated polysulfone and 1-methylimidazolium-functionalized polysulfone crosslinked covalently with N,N,N′,N′-tetramethylethylenediamine (degree of crosslinking of 5%). In these membranes, sulfonic groups interact electrostatically with cationic groups to form an ionic crosslinking structure with improved alkaline stability. The effect of the ionic crosslinking on the thermal, chemical, mechanical, and electrochemical behavior of membranes was studied. These crosslinked membranes containing sulfonated polysulfone showed higher thermal stability, with a delay of around 20 °C in the onset decomposition temperature value of the functional groups than the crosslinked membranes containing free polysulfone. The tensile strength values were maintained above 44 MPa in all membranes with a degree of chloromethylation (DC) below 100%. The maximum ionic conductivity value is reached with the membrane with the highest degree of chloromethylation. The chemical stability in alkaline medium of the conducting membranes also improved. Thus, the ionic conductivity variation of the membranes after 96 h in a 1 M potassium hydroxide (KOH) solution is less pronounced when polysulfone is replaced by sulfonated polysulfone. So, the ionic crosslinking which joins both components of the blends together, improves the material’s properties making progress in the development of new solid electrolyte for polymeric fuel cells.

Abstract:Poly(vinyl alcohol)-sodium alginate composite hydrogels were first introduced to synthesize robust and well-intergrown zeolite imidazolate framework (ZIF)/polymer hollow fiber membranes. Through enough adsorption interaction with metal ions by chelation, sufficient nucleation sites for in situ metal-organic framework (MOF) preparation are provided. Using this method, we can not only easily prepare defect-free MOF membranes ignoring the complex modification process and seed deposition but also structurally fix crystalline MOF layers and greatly improve the stiffness and durability of MOF composite membranes. The strategy also gives the appropriate level of generality for synthesis of versatile dense MOF membranes on a variety of polymeric supports. The fabricated ZIF-8/polyethersulfone membrane presented remarkable gas separation performance with H2 permeance of as high as 9.66 × 10-7 mol m-2 s-1 Pa-1 and a high H2/CO2 separation factor of up to 29.0.
A novel UV-crosslinked sulphonated polysulfone cation exchange membrane with improved dimensional stability for electrodialysis

Abstract:To improve the dimensional stability of electrodialysis membranes, a series of crosslinked sulphonated polysulfone cation exchange membranes with different degrees of sulfonation were prepared by a simple and low energy consumption method, namely UV-crosslinking. The crosslinking reaction was performed by UV irradiation and using 2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl-diphenyl-phosphine oxide (TPO) as photoinitiator and trimethylolpropane tri-acrylate (TMPTA) as crosslinker. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) results showed that crosslinking leads to a denser and smoother surface. Compared with the swelling and water uptake results of pristine membranes, the crosslinked membranes exhibited an enhanced dimensional stability, especially at higher temperature (40–70°C). The thermogravimetric analysis and measurement of mechanical properties indicated that the crosslinked membrane has better mechanical and thermal properties. The electrochemical properties were analyzed, and the membrane after crosslinking showed a better ion permselectivity. When applied in electrodialysis and compared to the commercial membrane with a NaCl removal ratio of 75.6%, the crosslinked membranes showed a more efficient performance (NaCl removal ratio=89.1% for SPSU-60). These improvements showed that the crosslinked membranes can be promising candidates for high-temperature and industrial application.

Abstract:A novel fluorinated poly(aryl ether oxadiazole)s ionomer with quaternary imidazole groups were synthesized via copolymerization of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethy biphenyl diphenol(TM-BP),2,5-bis(2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorophenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole(FPOx)and 6F-BPA,bromination of the benzylic methyl,and functionalization with N-methylimidazole.The anion exchange membranes(QFOAEMs)were obtained by solution casting method.The ion exchange capacity(IEC),conductivity,water uptake and swelling ratio of the QFOAEMs were studied.The results showed that the permeability of vanadium ion of QFOAEMs was 1.1×10-8 cm2·min-1,much less than that of Nafion117 membrane(3.8×10-7 cm2·min-1).The QFOAEMs membrane has a potential application for vanadium redox flow battery.

Abstract:In this work, poly(ionic liquid) brushes were successfully grafted to the electrospun SiO2 nanofiber surface with atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) technology. By adjusting the density of initiator sites on the nanofiber surface, the core–shell structure was fabricated, which could clearly be “seen” with transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Combining the unique properties of an ionic liquid and electrospun nanofibrous mat, this hierarchically structured membrane provides a useful platform for developing functionalized membrane systems. With counteranion exchange of the attached poly(ionic liquid) brushes, the properties and functionality of the prepared membrane can be easily adjusted or integrated on need. As a demonstration, such a membrane served as an nion-directed molecular gating system. With counteranion exchange, the surface properties of the membrane were reversibly altered between hydrophilic to hydrophobic, which makes pores withdraw or expel solvent molecules (H2O), thus controlling the transport of probe molecules through the membrane. As a further example, electroactive polyoxometalate (POM) units were incorporated into the membrane through simple counteranion exchange, and a functionalized membrane with electroactivity was also achieved. In this work, various characterization techniques including infrared spectroscopy (IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electrochemical measurements were used to characterize the related membrane systems.
Novel Hollow‐fiber Anion‐exchange Hybrid Membranes: Preparation and Characterization

Abstract:To develop ion-exchange membranes for application in severe conditions, such as those with high temperatures, strongly oxidizing environments, or organic solvents, new hollow-fiber anion-exchange hybrid membranes were prepared by the immersion of brominated poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) base hollow fibers in a tetraethoxysilane-ethanol Solution followed by sol-gel and quaternary amination. Compared to conventional polymeric charged membranes, the prepared hybrid membranes were higher in both thermal and dimensional stabilities. The results suggest that tetraethoxysilane concentration was an important factor affecting the membrane's intrinsic properties. When the tetraethoxysilane concentration was in the range 15-45%, the final hollow-fiber anion-exchange hybrid membranes had an ion-exchange capacity of 1.9-2.0 mmol/g, a water uptake of 83-1.23 g of water/g of dry weight, and a dimensional change ratio of 13-18%. Abstract:Imidazolium-functionalized octaphenyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane nanoparticles were incorporated into imidazolium-functionalized poly(ether ether ketone) (ImPEEK) to fabricate high-performance anion exchange membranes with tuneable microphase separation structures and efficient ion transport channels. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy observations revealed the formation of ion channels in the membranes due to the aggregation of imidazolium groups. The transport of hydroxide ions in the composite membranes was facilitated by the increase in the effective ion mobility from 2.27x10(-4) to 3.09x10(-4) cm(2) s(-1) V-1, while their hydroxide conductivity at 30 degrees C (36.22-44.11 mS cm(-1)) was significantly higher than that of an ImPEEK control membrane (30.66 mS cm(-1)).

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), as newly emerging filler materials for polyelectrolytes, show many compelling intrinsic features, such as variable structural designability and modifiability of proton conductivity. In this manuscript, UiO-66-NH2, a stable MOF with -NH2 functional groups in its ligands, was selected to achieve a high-performance sulfonated poly(arylene ether nitrile)s (SPENs)/UiO-66-NH2-x covalent-ionically cross-linked composite membrane. Simultaneously, the obtained composite membranes displayed excellent thermal stability and dimensional stability. The as-prepared SPEN/UiO-66-NH2-x cross-linked membranes exhibited higher proton conductivity than recast SPENs, which can be attributed to the construction of ionic clusters and well-connected ionic nanochannels along the interface between UiO-66-NH2-x and SPEN matrix via molecular interactions. Meanwhile, the methanol permeability of the SPEN/UiO-66-NH2-x composite membrane had been effectively reduced due to the barrier effect of cross-linking and the addition of UiO-66-NH2-x. The SPEN/UiO-66-NH2-5 composite membrane had the highest selectivity of 6.42 × 105 S·s·cm−3: 14.3-times higher than that of Nafion 117. The preparation of cross-linked UiO-66-NH2/SPEN composite was facile, which provides a new strategy for preparing high performance proton exchange membrane.

Abstract:The cross-linked imidazolium functionalized anion-exchange membranes are in-situ prepared via reaction of chloromethylated poly(styrene-b-isobutylene-b-styrene) with 1,1'-(1,6-hexanediyl)bisimidazole and N-methylimidazole. The composite membranes of cross-linked imidazolium poly(styrene-b-isobutylene-b-styrene) with a small amount of modified graphene oxide grafted with octadecyl and propyl phenyl imidazolium could be further prepared. These membranes exhibit significantly high chemical stability and ionic conductivity (σ), marked by low methanol permeability, together with improved dynamic mechanical properties. The ionic conductivity of cross-linked imidazolium poly(styrene-b-isobutylene-b-styrene) reaches 2.09×10-2 S·cm-1 at 80 oC by introduction of 0.5 wt% loading of modified graphene oxide. This membrane also behaves an excellent chemical stability and σ can remain ca. 82% of the original value after immerged in strong alkaline medium (2M NaOH) at 60 °C for 500 h, which is almost the same as that (ca. 82%) of commercial Nafion 115 in acid medium (2M H2SO4) at 60 °C for 500 h. The cross-linked imidazolium poly(styrene-b-isobutylene-b-styrene) was characterized as a promising anion exchange membrane materials in fuel cell for its high ionic conductivity, chemical stability and low methanol permeability.

Abstract:This work presents a high throughput fabrication of modifiable poly(pentafluorostyrene) fibers as reinforcement for Nafion and SFS001 in proton exchange membranes. The mechanical properties and proton conductivities correlate with the basicity of the fiber material by interactions between amines (fiber) and sulfonic acid (matrix). These findings serve as a blueprint for the design of novel fiber materials with high throughput. This study demonstrates a high‐throughput fabrication of fiber interlayers for proton exchange membranes based on poly(pentafluorostyrene) (PPFSt) and its aminated derivatives. The fibers are produced by electrospinning, where the parameters are carefully screened. The controlled parameters are solvent composition, weight percentage, voltage, flow rate, and temperature, controlled with a self‐designed heating jacket. The parameters are iterated toward optimized fiber structure and maximum output. The yielded fibers are infiltrated with Nafion and sulfonated polymer from bisphenol AF and decafluorobiphenyl (SFS001) by spray‐coating and doctor blading to obtain the fiber‐reinforced proton exchange membranes. Tensile tests reveal a higher Young's modulus and yield stress than pure Nafion. Here, the basicity of the aminated PPFSt fibers correlates with the Young's modulus due to improved acid‐base interactions between amine groups and sulfonic acid. The acid‐base interactions influence the composite membrane's proton conductivity, varying from 23 mS cm−1 for strongly alkaline fibers to 69 mS cm−1 for non‐basic fibers. These findings can be transferred to fabricating fiber reinforcements beyond routinely used poly(benzimidazoles).

Abstract:Limitations in existing anion exchange membranes deter their use in the efficient treatment of industrial wastewater effluent. This work presents an approach to fabricating novel anion-conducting membranes using epoxy resin monomers like hydrophobic or hydrophilic diglycidyl ether and quaternized polyethyleneimine (PEI). Manipulating the diglycidyl ether nature, the quantitative composition of the copolymer and the conditions of quaternization allows control of the physicochemical properties of the membranes, including water uptake (20.0–330%), ion exchange capacity (1.5–3.7 mmol/g), ionic conductivity (0.2–17 mS/cm in the Cl form at 20 °C), potentiostatic transport numbers (75–97%), as well as mechanical properties. A relationship was established between copolymer structure and conductivity/selectivity trade-off. The higher the quaternized polyethyleneimine, diluent fraction, and hydrophilicity of diglycidyl ether, the higher the conductivity and the lower the permselectivity. Hydrophobic diglycidyl ether gives a much better conductivity/selectivity ratio since it provides a lower degree of hydration than hydrophilic diglycidyl ether. Different mesh and non-woven reinforcing materials were also examined. The developed membranes demonstrate good stability in both neutral and acidic environments, and their benchmark characteristics in laboratory electrodialysis cells and batch-mode dialysis experiments are similar to or superior to, commercial membranes such as Neosepta© AMX, FujiFilm© Type1, and Fumasep FAD-PET.

Abstract:Novel mesoporous poly(vinyl alcohol)/SiO(2) composite nanofiber membranes functionalized with mercapto groups with diameters of 300-500 nm have been fabricated by a sol-gel electrospinning process; they were highly effective at absorbing Cu(ii) ions from waste water.
