Abstract:Dimensionally stable and high level of conductivity is of importance for alkaline exchange membrane (AEM) applications. However, the main challenge for AEMs is to control swelling behavior and construct ion transport "high way" simultaneously. Here we report a series of self-crosslinked membranes using poly (aryl ether ketone) as rigid matrix and imidazolium-based polymeric ionic liquid as hydroxyl transporting groups. The obtained membranes possess anisotropic swelling behavior: no more than restricted 4% in-plane swelling ratio indicate excellent dimensional stability; while, obvious through-plane swelling guaranteed abundant water absorption in the hydrophilic domains, which benefited sufficient hydroxide ion dissociation and improved ion conductivity. The swelling ratio of through-plane can be more than tenfold of in-plane. This result quantifies the dramatic influence of flexible polymeric ionic liquid on specific swelling behavior of membranes for the first time. Moreover, the distinct microscopic phase separation endows the membranes possessing high ion conductivity (0.067 S cm(-1)). The introduction of long-chain polymeric ionic liquid not only facilitate continuous pathway, but also reduce the dependency on lambda (average hydration number vs. positive group). After treatment in alkaline conditions, the membranes still exhibit more than 8 MPa tensile strength.
Poly(olefin)-Based Anion Exchange Membranes Prepared Using Ziegler–Natta Polymerization

Abstract:Bromoalkyl-functionalized poly(olefin)s were synthesized by copolymerization of 4-(4-methylphenyl)-1-butene with 11-bromo-1-undecene using Ziegler-Natta polymerization. The resulting bromoalkyl-functionalized poly(olefin)s were converted to quaternary ammonium-containing anion-conductive copolymers by reacting the pendant bromoalkyl group with trimethylamine or a custom-synthesized tertiary amine containing pendant quaternary ammonium moieties. Poly(olefin)-based AEMs with three cations per side chain showed considerably higher hydroxide conductivities, up to 201 mS/cm at 80 degrees C in liquid water, compared to that of samples with only one cation per bromoalkyl site (68 mS/cm, 80 degrees C, liquid water), likely due to phase separation in the triple-cation structure. More importantly, triple-cation side-chain poly(olefin) AEMs exhibited higher hydroxide conductivity under relative humidity conditions (50%-100%) than typical AEMs based on benzyltrimethylammonium cations. The triple-cation the triple-cation side-chain poly(olefin)-based AEM exhibited an ionic conductivity as high as 115 mS/cm under 95% RH at 80 degrees C and 11 mS/cm under 50% RH at 80 degrees C. In addition to high ionic conductivity, the triple-cation side-chain poly(olefin) AEMs exhibited good chemical and dimensional stability. High retention of ionic conductivity (>85%) was observed for the samples in 1 M NaOH at 80 degrees C over 1000 h. Based on these high-performance poly(olefin) AEMs, a fuel cell with a peak power density of 0.94 W cm(-2) (1.28 W cm(-2) after iR correction) was achieved under H-2/O-2 at 70 degrees C. The results of this study suggest a new, low-cost, and scalable route for preparation of poly(olefin)-based AEMs for anion exchange membrane applications.

Abstract:To improve the dimensional stability of electrodialysis membranes, a series of crosslinked sulphonated polysulfone cation exchange membranes with different degrees of sulfonation were prepared by a simple and low energy consumption method, namely UV-crosslinking. The crosslinking reaction was performed by UV irradiation and using 2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl-diphenyl-phosphine oxide (TPO) as photoinitiator and trimethylolpropane tri-acrylate (TMPTA) as crosslinker. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) results showed that crosslinking leads to a denser and smoother surface. Compared with the swelling and water uptake results of pristine membranes, the crosslinked membranes exhibited an enhanced dimensional stability, especially at higher temperature (40–70°C). The thermogravimetric analysis and measurement of mechanical properties indicated that the crosslinked membrane has better mechanical and thermal properties. The electrochemical properties were analyzed, and the membrane after crosslinking showed a better ion permselectivity. When applied in electrodialysis and compared to the commercial membrane with a NaCl removal ratio of 75.6%, the crosslinked membranes showed a more efficient performance (NaCl removal ratio=89.1% for SPSU-60). These improvements showed that the crosslinked membranes can be promising candidates for high-temperature and industrial application.

Abstract:N-spirocyclic cations containing anion exchange membranes (AEMs) possess excellent alkaline stability, but poor mechanical and conductive properties due to the rigid N-spirocyclic structure and lack of flexible side chain structural design. In this work, a flexible ether spaced N-spirocyclic quaternary ammonium functionalized side chain is proposed, in which hydroxyl substituted N-spirocyclic cation provides active grafting site with chloromethylated polysulfone through Williamson etherification. The flexible ether-oxygen spacer promotes aggregation of the rigid spirocyclic cations and thus significantly improves conductivity. The uniformly in-situ thermal crosslinking between benzene rings and the residue chloromethyl groups in polysulfone greatly enhances mechanical properties of the membranes. Constrained ring conformation of N-spirocyclic cation, ether spaced benzyl-free side chain, as well as the OH- blocking crosslinked networks endow an excellent alkaline stability to the membranes. The ether spaced N-spirocyclic containing membranes exhibit well micro-phase separation structure, up to around 85.7 mS cm(-1) of hydroxide conductivity at 80 degrees C, around 10.5 MPa of tensile strength in hydrated state and around 95.6% conductivity retention after immersion in 1 M KOH at 80 degrees C for 720 h. The performance is among the best N-spirocyclic functionalized AEMs reported in the literature.

Abstract:Two novel cross-linked anion exchange membranes (AEMs) for alkaline fuel cells (AFCs) were synthesized via nucleophilic substitution reactions. Brominated poly(2,5-bis(perfluorophenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole-co-allyl bisphenol), called as precursory polymer (PP), was synthesized by reaction of 2,5-bis(2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorophenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (FPOx) and diallyl bisphenol A (DABPA) followed by bromination. Ethanediamine (EDA) and propane diamine (PDA) were introduced to PP to obtain cross-linked polymers EDA-PP and PDA-PP, respectively. The reactions between PP and diamines rolled the crosslinking and functionalizing process in one. The crosslinking process enhanced the thermal and mechanical stabilities of EDA-PP and PDA-PP, which were affected by the length of alkyl chains of diamines. Meanwhile, the conjugated system of PP extended the electron clouds around the amine groups, which improved the thermal stability and alkaline durability of quaternary ammonium (QA) groups. The solution casting membranes of EDA-PP and PDA-PP showed high ionic conductivities. The swelling ratios, TGA and AFM properties of the membranes also demonstrated their good mechanical and thermal stabilities.

Abstract:The stability of anion exchange membranes (AEMs) is an important feature of alkaline exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs), which has been extensively studied. However it remains a real challenge due to the harsh working condition. Herein, we developed a novel type of polysulfone-based AEMs with three modified 1,2-dimethylbenzimidazoliums containing different substitutes at C4- and C7-position. The results showed that the introduction of the substitutes could obviously improve the dimensional and alkaline stabilities of the corresponding membranes. The swelling ratios of resultant AEMs were all lower than 10% after water immersion. The membrane with 4,7-dimethoxy-1,2-dimethylbenzimidazolium group exhibited the highest alkaline stability. Only 9.2% loss of hydroxide conductivity was observed after treating the membrane in 1 mol·L−1 KOH solution at 80 °C for 336 h. Furthermore, the density functional theory (DFT) study on the three functional group models showed that the substitutes at C4- and C7-position affected the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energies of the different 1,2-dimethylbenzimidazolium groups.

Abstract:Anion exchange membranes (AEMs) are increasingly becoming a popular research area due to their ability to function with nonprecious metals in electrochemical devices. Nevertheless, there is a challenge to simultaneously optimize the dimensional stability and ionic conductivity of AEMs due to the "trade-off" effect. Herein, we adopted a novel strategy of combining filling and cross-linking using functionalized bacterial cellulose (PBC) as a dual-functional porous support and brominated poly(phenylene oxide) (Br-PPO) as the cross-linking agent and filler. The PBC nanofiber framework together with cross-linking can provide a reliable mechanical support for the subsequent filled polymer, thus improving the mechanical properties and effectively limiting the size change of the final quaternized-PPO (QPPO)-filled PBC composite membrane. The composite membrane showed a very low swelling ratio of only 10.35%, even at a high water uptake (81.83% at 20 degrees C). Moreover, the existence of multiple -NR3+ groups in the cross-link bonds between BC and Br-PPO can provide extra OH- ion transport sites, contributing to the increase in ionic conductivity. The final membrane demonstrated a hydroxide ion conductivity of 62.58 mS cm(-1), which was remarkably higher than that of the pure QPPO membrane by up to 235.93% (80 degrees C). The successful preparation of the PBC3/QPPO membrane provides an effective avenue to tackle the trade-off effect through a dual-functional strategy.

Abstract:A series of semi-interpenetrating polymer network (sIPN) composite anion exchange membranes were fabricated depending on immobilized linear PVDF and cross-linked polyepichlorohydrin (PECH), 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane, (DABCO) network through in situ synthetic pathway. A cyclic diamine (DABCO) was used as cross-linking agent and simultaneously improved the ion-exchange capacity by amination. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) indicated that the composite membranes exhibited a dense and homogeneous structure. Successful formation of PECH-DABCO copolymer within the sIPN membranes was also confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The PVDF percentage and inherent properties of membranes such as ion exchange capacity (IEC), water uptake (WR), thermal stability, mechanical property, and area resistance were investigated to evaluate their applicability in electrodialysis (ED). The experimental results showed that the composite membrane maintained a good perspective for ED application.

Abstract:A novel anion exchange membrane with tri-quaternized side chain has been developed in the present work. Di-cationic quaternary ammonium salt, 1-(4'-{1"-azonia-4"-azabicyclo [2.2.2] octyl} butyl) azonia-4-azabicyclo [2.2.2] octane (AABAA), is synthesized and used as tri-quaternization reagent. The tri-quaternized side chains enhance ionic interactions, which induce good micro-phase separation and excellent swelling resistance. Better aggregation of ionic clusters is observed in transmission electron microscopy (TEM) image in the tri-quaternized poly (ether sulfone) membrane (tri-QPESOH) compared to that in the mono-quaternized membrane (mono-QPESOH). Tri-QPESOH membranes achieve a well-balanced performance between high hydroxide conductivity and dimensional stability. Especially, the tri-QPESOH membrane with IEC 2.31 mmol g(-1) exhibits high hydroxide conductivity of 45.9 mS cm(-1) at 25 degrees C and 130.9 mS cm(-1) at 80 degrees C, and low swelling ratio of 21.5% even at 80 degrees C. Tri-QPESOH membranes also show improved thermal, mechanical and chemical stabilities. These observations suggest that the tri-cationic side chains provide a promising solution to the electrochemical-mechanical balance of anion exchange membranes. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:To develop ion-exchange membranes for application in severe conditions, such as those with high temperatures, strongly oxidizing environments, or organic solvents, new hollow-fiber anion-exchange hybrid membranes were prepared by the immersion of brominated poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) base hollow fibers in a tetraethoxysilane-ethanol Solution followed by sol-gel and quaternary amination. Compared to conventional polymeric charged membranes, the prepared hybrid membranes were higher in both thermal and dimensional stabilities. The results suggest that tetraethoxysilane concentration was an important factor affecting the membrane's intrinsic properties. When the tetraethoxysilane concentration was in the range 15-45%, the final hollow-fiber anion-exchange hybrid membranes had an ion-exchange capacity of 1.9-2.0 mmol/g, a water uptake of 83-1.23 g of water/g of dry weight, and a dimensional change ratio of 13-18%. Abstract:A novel approach is proposed to design anion exchange membranes (AEMs) containing pendent imidazolium side chains with flexible ether-containing spacer by the Williamson etherification between chloromethylated polysulfone and as-synthesized hydroxyl-bearing imidazolium. The introduction of long flexible ether-containing spacer chains enhances the mobility of terminated imidazolium groups and ion interactions. It facilitates the formation of a good hydrophilic/hydrophobic micro-phase separation structure, which is confirmed by the scattering peak of SAXS. As a result, the membranes exhibit high conductivity and excellent anti-swelling ability. The membrane with IEC of 1.55mmolg−1 shows considerable hydroxide conductivity (72 mS cm−1, 60°C), low swelling ratio (7.3%, 60°C), and great tensile strength in hydrated state (43.4MPa, 20°C). The existence of long spacer chain also improved the alkaline stability. After immersion in 60°C, 1M KOH solution for 168h, hydroxide conductivity and tensile strength of the membrane remain constant. The ether-containing side chains fabricated in this work provides a universal promising method to balance hydroxide conductivity and dimensional and alkaline stability.
Enhanced Hydroxide Conductivity and Dimensional Stability with Blended Membranes Containing Hyperbranched PAES/Linear PPO as Anion Exchange Membranes

Abstract:A series of novel blended anion exchange membranes (AEMs) were prepared with hyperbranched brominated poly(arylene ether sulfone) (Br-HB-PAES) and linear chloromethylated poly(phenylene oxide) (CM-PPO). The as-prepared blended membranes were fabricated with different weight ratios of Br-HB-PAES to CM-PPO, and the quaternization reaction for introducing the ionic functional group was performed by triethylamine. The Q-PAES/PPO-XY (quaternized-PAES/PPO-XY) blended membranes promoted the ion channel formation as the strong hydrogen bonds interconnecting the two polymers were maintained, and showed an improved hydroxide conductivity with excellent thermal behavior. In particular, the Q-PAES/PPO-55 membrane showed a very high hydroxide ion conductivity (90.9 mS cm−1) compared to the pristine Q-HB-PAES membrane (32.8 mS cm−1), a result supported by the morphology of the membrane as determined by the AFM analysis. In addition, the rigid hyperbranched structure showed a suppressed swelling ratio of 17.9–24.9% despite an excessive water uptake of 33.2–50.3% at 90 °C, and demonstrated a remarkable alkaline stability under 2.0 M KOH conditions over 1000 h.

Abstract:Solvent-resistant anion-exchange membranes with a crosslinking matrix were prepared with the reaction of chloromethylated polysulfone in N, N-dimethylformamide with diamine, such as N, N-dimethyl-1, 3-propanediamine, or N, N, N′, N′-tetramethyl-1, 6-hexanediamine. The electrical resistances of the membrane were 1.28–;12.5Ω. The permselectivities were in the range of 93.1–;98.5%. The solvent-resistant performances of the anion membrane were verified by making a bipolar membrane. It is shown that the bipolar membrane can operate at a higher current density because the crosslinked matrix of the anion membrane limited the degree of interpenetration from the sulfonated polysulfone solution in DMF on it to the extent necessary to produce quality bipolar membranes.

Abstract:Side-chain-type sulfonated/quaternized aromatic polyelectrolytes with precisely controlled contents of ionized groups are successfully synthesized via direct polyacylation of sulfonated/quaternized monomers based on 2,2 '-dihydroxy-1,1 '-binaphthyl (DHBN). Both proton exchange membranes (PEMs) and anion exchange membranes (AEMs) of the corresponding polyelectrolytes exhibit outstanding properties. Proton conductivity (116 mS cm(-1) at 30 degrees C) higher than Nafion 115 for the PEMs and OH- conductivity (28.5-53.7 mS cm(-1) at 30 degrees C) comparable to Tokuyama A901 for the AEMs are accomplished. In addition, the AEMs can withstand 60 days' aging in 1 mol L-1 NaOH at 60 degrees C without degradation, as proved by H-1 NMR. More intriguingly, when starting from optically active (S)-DHBN instead of racemic DHBN, an enhancement in proton conductivity of PEMs is observed for the first time, which opens a new door to optically active ion exchange membranes.

Abstract:A well‐designed architecture which originated from Stiff Bottle‐brush is presented here to construct high‐performance anion exchange membranes. A well‐designed architecture is presented here to construct high‐performance anion exchange membranes (AEMs). A series of quaternized fluorene‐containing block poly(arylene ether sulfone ketone)s (QFPESK‐m‐n) is synthesized as the main chains, and grafted with comb‐shaped C8 long alkyl chains for the AEMs. By varying the hydrophilic segment' length, there has been a significant change in the microstructure as well as phase separation morphology of the membranes, as confirmed by atomic force microscopy. Hence the as‐prepared AEMs with moderate ion exchange capacities (IECs) show enhanced hydroxide conductivities in the range of 28.8―94.7 mS⋅cm−1 from 30 to 80°C. Furthermore, based on the block backbones and hydrophobic comb‐shaped alkyl chains, the AEMs show low‐level swelling ratios of 4.3% to 9.2% at 30°C and from 6.2% to 13.2% at 80°C, and superior ratios of conductivity to swelling. In addition, the QFPESK‐m‐n AEMs also depict acceptable mechanical properties, good thermal stability and an optimizable alkaline stability.

Abstract:Anion exchange membranes (AEMs) refer to polymers in the membrane shape, having positively charged groups (fixed groups) alongside the polymer chain, which have aroused intense scholar interest. AEMs serve a critical component in various electrochemical systems/devices [1-5]. Currently, increasing the hydroxide conductivity and enhancing the chemical stability of AEMs are the most challenging. Herein, I want to highlight endeavors in fabricating chemically stable and highly conductive AEMs to bring this discussion to a deeper level.
Study on Tunable Crosslinking Anion Exchange Membranes Fabrication and Degradation Mechanism

Abstract:A novel monomer who combined cross linker and functional groups together called 2,2'-(hexane-1,6-diyl)bis(2-methyl-2,3,3a,4,7,7a-hexahydro-1H-4,7-methanoisoindo1-2-ium) iodide (HDHM-iodide) was synthesized and polymerized by Ring-opening Metathesis Polymerization (ROMP) to give a series of anion exchange membranes. The resulting monomers and polymers were characterized by H-1 and C-13 NMR, TGA. Directly cast from the polymerization solution on flat glass to form the clear, flexible anion exchange membrane. Swelling ratio and water uptake are only 6.2% and 28.04% at 60 degrees C for membrane with 2.32 mmol.g(-1) ion exchange capacity (IEC). The conductivity of Poly (HDHM-Norbornene-hydroxide-12) and Poly(HDHM-Norbornene-chlorine-12) AEMs at room temperature up to 27 mS.cm(-1) and 14 mS.cm(-1) separately, and increased with temperature quickly. After 16 days immersed in 2 M NaOH solution, conductivity and IEC dropped at 60 degrees C in alkaline solution, 50% and 35% separately. The energy barrier of degradation pathways calculation reveled that Hofmann Elimination case 2 degradation pathway with the lowest energy barrier 12.181 kcal.mol(-1) is most likely occurred when faced with hydroxide. Also, the energy barrier of Hofmann Elimination is lower than Nucleophilic Substitution degradation mechanism. (C) 2016 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Novel aryl‐ether‐free polyaromatics anion exchange membranes (AEMs) with various cationic headgroups are synthesized. The study explored their effects on AEM properties, including hydroxide conductivity, water uptake, swelling ratios, and alkaline stability. Thin films prepared showed high conductivity, excellent stability, and dimensional stability, making them promising for electrolysis applications. Novel aryl‐ether‐free polyaromatics with different‐sized cationic headgroups tethered to the backbone are synthesized via superacid‐catalyzed polycondensations and subsequent Menshutkin quaternization reactions for potential application as anion exchange membranes (AEMs) in electrolysis. Experimentally, the effect of four different heterocycloaliphatic quaternary ammonium cationic headgroups on the AEM properties, such as the hydroxide conductivity, water uptake, swelling ratios and alkaline stability, is fully explored. Thin films are prepared by spin‐coating these AEMs onto porous polytetrafluoroethylene substrates. With a high degree of quaternization, these new aryl‐ether free polyaromatic thin film AEMs achieved high conductivities and good mechanical stability. The highest hydroxide conductivity of 45 mS cm−1 is achieved with excellent alkaline stability and conductivity retention of 96% after 30 days in 1 m KOH at 80 °C. Due to the polytetrafluoroethylene substrates, the swelling ratios and water uptake are relatively small, which ensured the astute dimensional stability of these thin film AEMs. The combined effect of alkaline‐stable cationic headgroups, an aromatic backbone and a robust substrate led to a promising thin‐film AEM.
