Abstract:In order to simulate multi-field coupling, a method that adding phase transformation model of heat treatment into thermo-mechanical model was used by finite element software Deform 3d. The distribution of phase and the effects of parameters on phase transformation were simulated under different processing parameters. The hot stamping experiments with the mold that had cooling system were carried out under different technological parameters. It was shown that 97.7% austenite transformed to martensite after 8 s pressure holding time; the average temperature of the sheet dropped 10 degrees C when the convection coefficient was raised from 0 W/m(2) K to 11000 W/m(2) K; the tensile strength of side wall was lower than flange and end region; the temperature error between the test and simulation was less than 15%. Simulation and experiment were in good agreement with accuracy enough for engineering applications.

Abstract:The current work is aimed at establishing a flexible thermo-metallo-mechanical finite element (FE) model for steels. The flexibility is improved in the metallurgical analysis by adopting a thermodynamics-based algorithm, in which only the chemical composition and the thermal history are needed. On the other hand, the transformation plastic constitutive equations are extended for consideration of multi-phase transformation. An explicit consistent tangent modulus is derived for model implementation. The microstructural results are coupled with the constitutive equations using utility and user subroutines in the FE commercial software ABAQUS to create the complete model. The transformation kinematic and strain evolution equations are first validated using experimental data from the literature. The effect of the cut-off function on the transformation plasticity model is discussed. The discrepancy found at the initial stage of strain evolution is explained from a metallurgical point of view. The proposed model is further applied to a multi-pass welding process of more than twenty thermal cycles. A good agreement is observed in comparison between the metallurgical graphs and the predicted microstructural distribution. The result of stress distribution is improved by including the transformation plasticity in simulation. The influence of the cut-off function is analyzed again by comparing the X-ray measurements of stresses at external surface with the predicted ones.

Abstract:Thermodynamic prediction of the increment of the formation temperature of proeutectoid ferrite by applied stress is nearly consistent with the experimental data. Kinetics models for ferrite, pearlite and bainite transformations can be shown as modified Johnson-Mehl-Avrami equation in which parameter b(σ) varies with the level of applied stress.The effects of tensile and compressive stresses on enhancement of the ferrite/pearlite and bainite transformations are discussed. The necessity and approach of modification of additivity hypothesis are introduced and the results from modified equation in which some parameters are obtained by regression of two experimental results or taken from TTT and CCT diagrams of a certain steel are superior than that from Scheil's equation. Thermodynamic calculation of Ms and nucleation kinetics equations of martensitic transformation under stress are suggested. Modeling of phase transformations under stress in ferrous alloys is briefly described.
Prediction of Martensitic Transformation and Deformation Behavior in the TRIP Steel Sheet Forming

Abstract:This paper presents a methodology for constitutive model construction of the multiphase steel coupling with TRIP (transformation-induced plasticity) effect and anisotropy characters. The TRIP effect is described by the evolution of phase transformation which is dependent on stress-state and temperature. The phase transformation kinetic model considering the dependence of the transformation rate on the multiaxial stress-state is established by means of simple-shear, uniaxial tension, plain strain and equibiaxial stretching tests at room temperature. It is shown that the stress triaxiality is decisive for the phase transformation rate. The higher the stress triaxiality, the faster the martensitic transformation, i.e. the more unstable the retained austenite is transformed. The proposed constitutive model is implemented into a commercial FE code to obtain a stress–strain curve of TRIP steel and predict the martensitic transformation at different regions of the rectangular deep drawing parts, which corresponds well with the experiment results. The variation of the elastic modulus with the martensitic transformation during stamping is also considered to improve the accuracy of springback simulation for TRIP steel. The results above present a foundation for the formability control technology.

Abstract:In this work, a modified Koistinen-Marburger (K-M) relationship was proposed to describe austenite-martensite transformation. The results show that the modified K-M equation was more accurate in predicting the martensite volume fraction. A cyclic uniaxial test consisted of heating and cooling was conducted to verify the accuracy of the modified model. In order to study the welding stress evolution considering the effect of martensite transformation and annealing, both the experiment and simulation on plate fusion welding were carried out. The simulation results indicated that the transformation kinetic and the recrystalization annealing both had non-ignorable effects on the stress evolution. In addition, the simulated residual stress based on the developed model compared well with the data measured by the hole drilling method.

Abstract:To meet the demands of energy conservation and security improvement, high-strength steel (HSS) is widely used to produce safety-related automotive components. In addition to fully high-strength parts, HSS is also used to manufacture components with tailored properties. In this work, a computational model is presented to predict the austenite decomposition into ferrite, pearlite, bainite and martensite during arbitrary cooling paths in HSS. First, a kinetic model for both diffusional and martensite transformations under isothermal or non-isothermal with constant cooling rate cooling conditions is proposed based on the well-known Johnson–Mehl–Avrami–Kolmogorov and Kamamoto models. The model is then modified for arbitrary cooling conditions through the introduction of the effects of the cooling rate, and the influence of diffusional transformations on martensite transformation is considered. Next, the detailed kinetics parameters are identified by fitting experimental data from BR1500HS steel. The model is further verified by several experiments conducted outside of the fit domain. The results obtained by calculation are found to be in good agreement with the corresponding experimental data, including the transformation histories, volume fraction microconstituents and Vickers hardness. Additionally, the model is also implemented as a subroutine in ABAQUS to simulate a tailored-strength hot stamping process of HSS, and the results are consistent with the test data. Thus, this computational model can be used as a guideline to design manufacturing processes that achieve the desired microstructure and material properties.

Abstract:Mathematics and Mechanics of Solids, Ahead of Print. Transformation plasticity, essential during solid–solid phase transitions, significantly impacts industrial processes like welding and quenching. Accurately simulating these procedures necessitates understanding thermal, metallurgical, and mechanical effects. Leblond et al.'s model offers a foundation, but refinement for mixed isotropic/kinematic hardening is crucial. We enhance this model by introducing characteristic length scales through nonlocal variables, illuminating plastic deformation mechanisms in both phases. Our work includes numerical implementation within a finite element analysis framework and practical applications to phase transformation scenarios involving A.508 cl. 3 and A533 low-alloy steels. Results affirm model robustness and efficiency in predicting phase transformation phenomena, benefiting industrial applications.

Abstract:The complex interaction between the soft and hard constituents hinders to understand the macro-micro stress-strain response of multi-phase steels in detail during sheet forming process. In this paper, a constitutive model is developed to predict the mechanical properties of multi-phase high strength steels considering the micro-deformation of individual phases based on the continuum mechanics theory. In this model, a mixture strain hardening law is established with the hypothesis that the strain of individual phase is a function of the macro-strain of material and the stress-strain relationship of individual phase obeys Swift law. A mixture anisotropic yield function for the multi-phase steels is presumed based on the yield function of Hill' 48. With the strain hardening law and yield function, the incremental formulation for the multi-phase steels is deduced based on the continuous elasto-plastic theory. Abstract:High strength steel products with good ductility can be produced via Q&P hot stamping process, while the phase transformation of the process is more complicated than common hot stamping since two-step quenching and one-step carbon partitioning processes are involved. In this study, an integrated model of microstructure evolution relating to Q&P hot stamping was presented with a persuasively predicted results of mechanical properties. The transformation of diffusional phase and non-diffusional phase, including original austenite grain size individually, were considered, as well as the carbon partitioning process which affects the secondary martensite transformation temperature and the subsequent phase transformations. Afterwards, the mechanical properties including hardness, strength, and elongation were calculated through a series of theoretical and empirical models in accordance with phase contents. Especially, a modified elongation prediction model was generated ultimately with higher accuracy than the existed Mileiko’s model. In the end, the unified model was applied to simulate the Q&P hot stamping process of a U-cup part based on the finite element software LS-DYNA, where the calculated outputs were coincident with the measured consequences.

Abstract:It is difficult to evaluate the strain hardening behavior of multi-phase steels while considering the stress–strain response of individual phases, due to the different deformation state and complex interactions of the soft and hard constituents during plastic forming. With assuming that the strain energy density of material equals to the weighted sum of each phase in this study, a multi-phase physical combined model is developed by incorporating the dislocation evolution of individual phases. The dislocation evolution of every individual phase is based on its micro-deformation, which is related to the macro-strain of material. The proposed model is verified by two groups of dual phase (DP) steels. One group considers different strength grades, and the other group deals with different martensite volume fractions (Vm). The strain hardening behaviors of material and individual phases are evaluated subsequently.

Abstract:Hot stamping can virtually avoid the cracking and wrinkling of high strength steel(HSS) sheets,and is widely used in automotive industry.In this work,thermal-fluid-mechanical-phase multi-field coupling platform was established,and the effects of process parameters on microstructure distribution were analyzed.Results showed that martensitic content increased with the increase of holding time and flow speed,and 13s was the critical holding time for obtaining a fully martensitic formed part.The martensitic content of the formed part was highest at the flange,and lowest at the bottom.The simulation results were in good agreement with the experimental results.

Abstract:The kinetics of phase transformation during tempering process of a quenched 45 steel has been experimentally studied. The influence of heating rate, holding temperature and holding time on the evolution of phase transformation during tempering process has been investigated. It has been found that phase transformation can take place even during rapid heating process of the as-quenched martensite steel. Based on the concept of tempering parameter lambda, a new kind of kinetic equation has been developed. With this model the transformed fraction of martensite during tempering process can be predicted more accurately and conveniently. The numerical simulated results of tempering process of the as-quenched steel show that the calculated fractions of phase transformation agree very well with the measured ones.

Abstract:Using mathematical modeling based on existing parametric regression equations the prediction of microstructure-phase transformations in heat affected zone( HAZ) metal of base material (steel 15Kh2NMFA) of WWER-1000 reactor vessel in arc cladding of protective anti-corrosion layer was carried out as well as performed comparative analysis of modeling results with obtained experimental data of dilatometric and metallographic analysis. The comparison of results ensures formation of bainite-martensite structure in HAZ metal of WWER-1000 reactor vessel, however a value of content of martensite in calculation and experimental determination is different on ~ 40...50%. To clarify the calculated results, a thermokinetic diagram of the decomposition of supercooled austenite was constructed for characteristic cooling rates (3; 4, and 5 °C/s) during the welding/surfacing thermal cycle. As a result, adequate parameters of the microstructure-phase composition in the HAZ of steel 15Kh2NMFA at corrosion-resistant cladding were obtained.

Abstract:The phase transformation temperature plays an important role in the design, production and heat treatment process of steels. In the present work, an improved version of the gradient-boosting method LightGBM has been utilized to study the influencing factors of the four phase transformation temperatures, namely Ac1, Ac3, the martensite transformation start (MS) temperature and the bainitic transformation start (BS) temperature. The effects of the alloying element were discussed in detail by comparing their influencing mechanisms on different phase transformation temperatures. The training accuracy was significantly improved by further introducing appropriate features related to atomic parameters. The melting temperature and coefficient of linear thermal expansion of the pure metals corresponding to the alloying elements, atomic Waber-Cromer pseudopotential radii and valence electron number were the top four among the eighteen atomic parameters used to improve the trained model performance. The training and prediction processes were analyzed using a partial dependence plot (PDP) and Shapley additive explanation (SHAP) methods to reveal the relationships between the features and phase transformation temperature.

Abstract:Due to the effect of transformation-induced plasticity, multiphase low alloy TRIP steel exhibits an enhanced combination of strength and ductility. Moreover, volume fractions of the constituents in TRIP steel vary during its plastic deformation. In this paper, a constitutive model for mechanical behavior of multiphase TRIP steel is presented. In the model, TRIP steel microstructure is decomposed into four individual constituents: austenite, martensite, bainitic ferrite and ferrite. Mechanical behavior of each individual phase is described by using physically-based model. On the basis of introducing transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) strain into decomposition of total strain, stress–strain relation of multiphase composite is obtained by using mixture rule and Iso-W hypothesis. Kinetics of strain-induced martensitic transformation is described by a generalized form of Olson–Cohen model, which takes into account temperature and stress state. Moreover, a new method to describe evolving grain size of retained austenite due to martensitic transformation is developed. On the basis of presented model, mechanical behavior of multiphase steel is simulated by using finite element method. Parameters of the model are calibrated for different mixture laws used in calculation. The simulated results have a good agreement with those observed in experiments.
Prediction and Optimization of Mechanical Properties of Multi-phase Anisotropic TiB2 Reinforced Steel Composite Using Model

Abstract:An analytical computational model was built based on the Mori-Tanaka method and Eshelby′s equivalent inclusion principle,which was used to predict mechanical properties of multi-phase anisotropic TiB2 reinforced steel composite,and the effects of reinforcement′s aspect ratio,volume fraction and orientation on longitudinal and transverse elasticity modulus of the composite were studied.Results show that the analytical model can predict different kinds of metal-matrix composites with high level precision.The reinforcements with larger aspect ratio can significantly raise the composite′s longitudinal modulus,while diminishing the transverse modulus only by a small amount.The volume fraction of reinforcement always has a positive correlation with elasticity modulus.With the increase of the angle between the alignment of the reinforcement and the loading direction,the longitudinal modulus increases first and then decreases.

Abstract:The temperature fields in hot-stamping process for BR1500HS steel sheet was simulated under the ABAQUS environment. Python scripting language was used for post-processing module of ABAQUS for secondary development, to obtain the volume fraction of martensite based on the formulas proposed by Koistinen and Marburger. The comparison results between simulation and metallograph show that the simulation can predict the volume fraction of martensitic effectively and thus can provide the guidance for the optimizing process parameters.

Abstract:A micromechanics model was introduced to predict macroscopic deformation behavior of a material undergoing non-thermoelastic martensitic phase transformation. Considering the characteristics of ferrous alloys, the elliptic martensitic variants inclusion within a representative volume element of an austenite parent phase was built, where the transformation strain was determined by Wechsler-Lieberman and Read theory (WLR) accounting to dilatation and shear components of the transformation strain. Undergoing a macroscopic shear, the effects of interaction parameters between the different internal variables and the geometrical characteristics parameters of martensitic inclusion such as sizes, shapes and orientations on both the mechanical response and martensitic volume fraction were discussed. The result of this study provides a guideline for development of realistic stress-dependent transformation evolution laws for steels. (C) 2007 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract:T wo types of multiphase steels containing blocky or fine martensite have been used to study the phase interaction and the TRIP effect. These steels were obtained by step-quenching and partitioning (S-QP820) or intercritical-quenching and partitioning (I-QP800 & I-QP820). The retained austenite (RA) in S-QP820 specimen containing blocky martensite transformed too early to prevent the local failure at high strain due to the local strain concentration. In contrast, plentiful RA in I-QP800 specimen containing finely dispersed martensite transformed uniformly at high strain, which led to optimized strength and elongation. By applying a coordinate conversion method to the microhardness test, the load partitioning between ferrite and partitioned martensite was proved to follow the linear mixture law. The mechanical behavior of multiphase S-QP820 steel can be modeled based on the Mecking–Kocks theory, Bouquerel’s spherical assumption, and Gladman-type mixture law. Finally, the transformation-induced martensite hardening effect has been studied on a bake-hardened specimen.

Abstract:Carbon steel materials are widely used in mechanical transmission. Under different temperature and pressure service conditions, the microscopic changes of stress and strain that are difficult to detect and analyze by experimental means will lead to failure deformation, thus affecting their operational stability and life. In this study, the molecular dynamics method is used to simulate the heating–cooling phase transition process of common carbon steel materials. Austenite transformation temperatures of 980 K (0.2 wt.%) and 1095 K (0.5 wt.%) are acquired which is determined by the volume hysteresis before and after transformation, which is consistent with the results of JMatPro phase diagram analysis. The internal stress state of the material varies between compressive stress and tensile stress due to the change of phase structure, and the dislocation characteristics during the phase transition period are observed to change significantly. Then, an α/γ two-phase interface model is constructed to study the migration of the phase interface and the change of the phase structure by applying a continuously changing external load. At the same time, the transition pressure of α→ε is obtained with a value of 37 GPa under three different initial loads showing the independence of the initial load and the historical path. Based on the molecular dynamics simulation and the phase diagram calculation of the carbon steel, the analysis method for the microstructure transformation and the stress–strain behavior of the phase interface under the external load can provide a reference for the design of microstructure and mechanical properties of alloy steel in the future.
