Abstract:The study of the aborigines in Taiwan began from Qing Dynasty ,and developed into the phase of indagation during the time that Taiwan was occupied by Japan. Then the study of the aborigines leaded by scholars in Taiwan got great development on the indagation of ethnography and the research of social and cultural anthropology. A kind of inaccurate tendency that several scholars unilaterally emphasize the relation between the aborigines in Taiwan and Austronesian family has been appearing in recent years. Basing on the new research of ethnography indagation and by integrated multi-subject research , rebuilding the important item such as the origin, the history, the relationship and the identifying of the nation on the aborigines in Taiwan, is the unshirkable responsibility to the continent scholars in the new century.
An Archaeological Study of Bark Cloth in Southern China

Abstract:In ancient Chinese documents, there are a few records of bark cloth as Daoyi Huifu (tree leaves cloth of island people) or Zhiji Mupi (weaving bark of tree) in southern China. These represent a different type of cloth culture of aborigianl Bai Yue or Bai Pu ethnic groups from the perspective of the Han nationality. Ethnologists have found a series of bark cloth making techniques in aborigianl Ami group in Taiwan, Dai people in Yunnan, Li group in Hainan, Bru-Van Kieu in Vietnam and Austronesian in Pacific Samoa. The archaeologists have reconstructed the history of bark cloth spreading from southern China to Pacific archipelagoes by excavating and studying the stone bark beaters by the way of typology and chronology.

Abstract:Three main layers of anthropology are yet to be researched in to in China. The first one is at the core, which studies the rural-urban relationship, including the peasants. The second layer focuses on those who have tributary relationship with the imperial court and ruled by Tusi or national autonomy. The third layer studies the goods, customs and habits of foreign countries who have or have no tributary relationship with the imperial court, but are recorded in historic documents. The first layer has developed into folk Chinese anthropology. The second layer is ethnology. Yet why so many foreign techniques in ancient China suffer a downfall in modern times is that we have internalized from globalism to nationalism. Therefore, what matters most to anthropology is to consider the future trend of anthropology with a global perspective rather than doing overseas research.

Abstract:Concerning the prehistoric Philippine culture,although its researchers are divergent on its developmental course and periodization,they believe to various extents that this aboriginal cultural system contains widespread cultural elements from the continent of South China.The available archaeo- logical data accumulated for almost one hundred years suggest that the Philippine Islands were the main link between the aboriginal cultures of the South China Baiyue system and the"Austronesian"cultures in the southwestern Pacific Ocean.This is reflected from the existence of cultural elements from South China continent in the prehistoric Philippine cultural sequence,whose archaeological cultures of the Pa- leolithic,Neolithic and early Metal ages,especially their principal contents,show without exception close relationship with South China continent.

Abstract:Abstract Anthropology in China has a century long history. This article examines its origin, development, practices, and limitations throughout history briefly. It is argued that the history of anthropology in China has always been influenced by the state politics; its ups and downs has been determined by the state policy, and thus lacks academic autonomy. In the era of reform-open, however, Chinese anthropology received its spring. Several fields of new were developed along with international anthropology; the discipline has produced many PhDs. Many universities and colleges have established their own programs or departments. There are some problems, however, are underneath. Nonetheless, all negative conditions would push Chinese anthropologists forward to learn more, strengthening theoretical and critical thinking and searching for new subjects and new problems.

Abstract:Abstract The historical research on the Ming Dynasty has been changing visibly during the past 15 years in mainland China. Despite the rapidly increasing publications, the substantive progress in scholarship is unfortunately limited. Many theories and methods in other fields have been introduced into the four sub-fields in the study of Ming History. In these four sub-fields, the rise and expansion of social history are impressive. Nonetheless, the interactions among these sub-fields are becoming more difficult than before.

Abstract:This article is a research report involving three anthropological studies conducted during the period of “Kuige” and their “re-studies.” By narrating the project, I set forth my views on the connections and differences between Chinese anthropological explorations from two historical periods. These anthropological explorations refer to the study of Lu Village conducted by Fei Xiaotong, that of “West Town” (Xizhou) by Francis L. K. Hsu, and that of “Pai-IPai” (Dai) villages by Tien Ju-Kang. They were all completed in the late 1930s and early 1940s. Each writer extracted a framework to analyze the land system, ancestor worship, and the relationship between humans and gods from the writer’s own field experience. Despite the difference in research methods, all three studies noticed the cultural differences between rural society and modernity. Since 2000, Peking University and Yunnan Minzu University have launched a “Province-university Cooperation Project.” During the project, a research team formed of several young scholars revisited Lu Village, “West Town” (Xizhou), and Namu Village. These writers’ works were based on the data acquired in their fieldwork and drew upon the opinions raised by global anthropologists on “re-study” in recent decades. Considering the dual effects of social change and shifts in academic concepts around “follow-up research,” the scholars put forward several points of view with their ethnographies, which all featured the characteristics of inheritance and reflection. Based on the results of the three “re-studies,” this article emphasizes the importance of the study of public rituals for the research of rural society. This article also attempts to re-examine the methodology of “human ecology,” which profoundly impacts Chinese anthropology and sociology.

Abstract:This article examines two existing "academic regions" in Chinese anthropology:the Southeastern and Southwestern models of anthropology.The author points out that the "bifurcation" of Southeastern "complex"of communities,lineages,markets,and folk religions and Southwestern "ways of being ethnic"has created a serious problem for the anthropology of Chinese civilization.He also argues that to further "internal understandings"of either region,it is necessary to think "externally" — to bring "external relationships" into "internal structures".The author has written extensively on sinological anthropology and ethnology as well as Chinese social science in general.In this context,he criticizes anthropologies in China and abroad of their common negligence of the relationships which have played important roles in the configuration of the regions under the empire-turned nation.

Abstract:Modern Chinese aesthetics focuses on the experience of the elites but neglects the abundant resources of folk art,mean while its disciplinary framework inherits the Western system.The new-style art anthropology aims to examine cross-cultural phenomena and to integrate aesthetics and art,elite and folk custom comprehensively throughout the world.Its core concept means that art is a way of cultural representation and the theoretical system of Chinese art anthropology,with Chinese themes,can be constructed by disclosing the truth of art anthropology at different levels.

Abstract:Communication Studies in Chinese mainland start from the most practical spheres of audience research,media management and environmental studies.Introductory articles about Western communication theories and methods also account for a high proportion.Studies on the media literacy and public communication appear until relatively recent years,and the number of organizational communication and interpersonal communication research is still fairly small. The number of studies based on the cases of Chinese mainland is in exponential increase.Moreover,with the increase of international exchanges and the expansion of researcher's academic view in communication,there are more research findings in the communication mechanisms of European countries and the United States,especially in public communication, of which China showed an obvious lack.

Abstract:There are some achievements about modern changes of Chinese education at the macro-middle-scale levels.But,what role did modern education play in people’s life? What did modern education bring to the people’s life,especially for the vast majority of the population,the rural masses? Few people have touched these essential questions.In fact,since social anthropology was introduced from the West during the early 1900s,some researchers of different periods have described and analyzed the practical situation of the rural education in modern China in their social anthropological writings or historical writings that invested with anthropology.Some of them can enlighten our research about modern rural education.We can borrow ideas from the view ofotherraised by anthropology to learn the practical situation of the rural education in modern China,and use community studies to find the relationship between the rural education and the rural masses life.

Abstract:Between the late 1930s and the early 1940s, a small group of Chinese anthropologists and sociologists carried out a series of field studies in the countryside of Yunnan. Among them, Fei Xiaotong, Francis L.K. Hsu, and Tian Rukang wrote three famous ethnographies. Each dealt with a different theme. But all of the three were deeply concerned with the cultural difference between rural China (as a whole) and modernity. After 60 years, a group of young anthropologists were sent to the three places where Fei, Hsu, and Tian conducted their research. There, they collected data and sought to restudy the villages. They were inspired both by the earlier studies and the new ideas of ethnographic restudy. Reflecting on Fei’s economics, Hsu’s confinement to inner village life and negligence of the outer world of Dali, and Tian’s Durkheimian sociology, all three young scholars have drawn their own conclusions on the issues of political power, hierarchical order, and ideology. Written by the organizer of the restudy project, this article provides an overview of the research and suggests an interpretive line. By bringing the three studies together, it also seeks to suggest something more general concerning the legacy of “human ecology” in Chinese social sciences.

Abstract:Landscape ecology has achieved great progress since its introduction to China in early 1980s. Based on 619 collections of literatures and 14 collections of books, this paper has all the literatures and books classified, arranged in order and counted on different special subject. According to the results of classified statistics, the authors discuss and analyze how landscape ecology research was going in China during 1990s. Moreover, this paper can also provide scientific basis for those who want to grasp and keep abreast of current focus and trend of landscape ecology in China.

"Bringing in" and "Going abroad": A bibliometric evaluation of the internationalization of archaeology in Mainland China

Abstract:Chinese scholars' performance in international academic community and research on foreign archaeology has brought hot discussion about the internationalization of Chinese archaeology. Based on the databases of the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) and the Web of Science core collection (WoS), this paper collected archaeology-related papers published by Chinese scholars in Chinese and world core journals (CCJs and WCJs for short), then filtered translated and original articles about foreign archaeology in CCJs, as well as all original archaeological articles in WCJs. Using Excel, CiteSpace and VOSviewer visualization software, we analyzed these data to give a bird's-eye view of how archaeology research in Mainland China has become internationalized. Chinese archaeology has seen active-interrupt-active phases characterized by learning from foreign academics in the last century. Over the past two decades, the number of articles published in WCJs by scholars from Mainland China has increased significantly, and most research topics are at the forefront of international scholarship. Collaboration networks largely expanded, with the number of Mainland China-led articles increasing significantly. Archaeological papers written by researchers from Mainland China have appeared in a more extensive range of journals, including those with high impact factors. However, articles related to joint Sino-foreign archaeological projects were mostly published in CCJs. The archaeology-related articles published by Chinese scholars in WCJs occupied only a small proportion of all archaeological articles in WCJs. Compared to articles in CCJs, the number of those published by Chinese scholars in WCJs is a drop in the ocean. Therefore the internationalization is not yet a dominant trend and with the introduction of the new inward-looking policy we need more time to observe where the trends of internationalization and localization in Chinese archaeology are heading.
Guangxi Anthropological Museums and the Representation of Zhuang Culture

Abstract:This article analyzes the history and modern state of anthropological museums in the Guangxi-Zhuang Autonomous Region (PRC) and researches the issue of how Zhuang culture is presented in exhibitions. The Zhuang are by far the most populous minority in China. In spite of their population and importance, foreign scholars do not usually pay much attention to them. The first anthropological museums appeared in China in the 1930s and since then have been developing through the periods of decay and prosperity along with the country itself. At present, the PRC’s anthropological museums are moving along with all the world trends of modernization of working processes and digitalization of practices and techniques. There is a network of ethnic ecomuseums in Guangxi. They were established to preserve local cultures in their own environment. This article shows that the results of the project are not as successful as planned. There are problems of ignorance among the local dwellers to their own culture, lack of funding and lack of interest in ecomuseums from both locals and managing personnel appointed by the government.

Abstract:Editorial Notes:On April 17,2006,initiated by Prof.Liu Ping and chaired by Prof.Liu and Peter Bol,a trans-disciplinary dialogue across historiography and anthropology was held at Harvard-Yenching Library.The dialogue was set off around such subjects as the development of contemporary Chinese historiography,the origin of historical anthropology,the state of historical anthropology in China,and anthropology in Taiwan.The question of "what is historical anthropology" especially received many varied viewpoints.Such communication and confrontation are sure to have positive impact on contemporary and future study of historical anthropology.
