Abstract:This article collected papers published by Chinese archaeologists in Chinese and World core journals (CCJs and WCJs for short) in the past century. Based on bibliometric analysis, the general characteristics and trends of Chinese archaeology were summarized. In a macroscopic perspective, historiography-rooted archaeology focusing on historical periods and central areas of China and preferring traditional archaeological methods (mainly a culture-historical paradigm) will continue to occupy a leading position in China. Simultaneously, interdisciplinary research and internationalisation will likely continue to develop and diversify Chinese archaeology, though the speed is unknown due to the impact of the pandemic. In comparison, more attention needs to be paid to theoretical research and to publishing more results of historical archaeology in WCJs.

Abstract:This study explores the current status of research on inbound tourism to China, which ranks third globally among tourist receiving countries. The importance of inbound tourism as an indicator of national tourism competitiveness and the current slow growth of inbound tourism in China make this review timely. A bibliometric approach is used. Articles published with CSSCI (Chinese Social Science Indexed) journals and international studies published in English-language journals were identified. Analysis of over 700 domestic articles about inbound tourism indicates that the studies concentrate on macro issues, in particular the spatial and temporal distribution of the inbound tourists and their economic impacts. Few studies on Chinese inbound tourism have been published in English language journals. The most popular theme is tourists’ behaviors. A comparison between publications in two languages is made and implications are offered in the context of the Chinese government’s policies on inbound tourism and the current status of research.
Toward internationalization: A bibliometric analysis of the social sciences in Mainland China from 1979 to 2018

Abstract:Abstract The past 40 years have witnessed profound changes in the international competitiveness of Mainland China’s scientific research. Based on publication data from Chinese researchers in the Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) from the Web of Science (WoS), this study aims to provide a bird’s-eye view of how social science research in Mainland China has internationalized over the past four decades. The findings show that the number of social science articles published by Chinese authors in international journals has experienced a noticeable increase, and the collaboration networks of researchers from Mainland China have broadened, with the number of articles with a Chinese first author showing a strong upward trend. In addition, findings show that Chinese scholars are published in a wider range of journals, and there has been a steady increase in their appearance in higher impact journals (influenced in part by certain journals). Finally, different social science disciplines show various degrees of internationalization. This study provides a broad view from which to examine the internationalization process in Mainland China’s social science landscape in the last four decades, while also noting some of the possible explanations for these changes, thereby deepening our understanding of social science research stemming from the region.

Abstract:Academic journals,by which academic influence of a country is indicated,provide important sources for research.The number of papers collected by the three US science citation databases(SCI,SSCI,AHCI) is an important index of a discipline's international academic influence.An analysis of academic papers indexed by the three science citation databases over the last three decades in our country reveals that great gaps exist in the number of papers indexed by each database,which embodies great imbalance in the development and international academic influence of the three subjects,of which natural science developed at a high speed,social science developed rapidly,and art and humanities developed slowly.In order to enhance the international academic influence of our country,policies should be stipulated to balance the development of different subjects.The way to classify subjects should be reformed: the philosophical social science should be divided into two subjects——social science and art humanities.Correct methods should be used in evaluating different subjects and measures should be taken to assist academic journals in entering international citation databases and thereby promote the internationalization.
English Writing for International Publication in the Age of Globalization: Practices and Perceptions of Mainland Chinese Academics in the Humanities and Social Sciences

Abstract:Much scholarly attention has been given to the English writing and publishing practices of the academics in non-Anglophone countries, but studies on such practices in the humanities and social sciences (HSS) have in general been limited. The case of Mainland Chinese HSS academics is potentially interesting. On the one hand, international publications in these disciplines have been on the increase, which are also encouraged by the national research policy of “going-out”. On the other hand, unlike those in science and technology (S&T), such practices in the HSS are still much less institutionalized at the local level. In the study reported in this article, semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine academics in economics, sociology and archaeology from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), and all nine participants had prior experience in international publishing. With a focus on participants’ experiences and perceptions, findings from this study demonstrated the relatively passive role participants played in their international publications, the importance of various resources in bringing forth these publications, and the relations between participants’ alignments with the local or international community and their voluntary investment in participating in their practices. Implications of the study were also discussed.

Abstract:On the international stage, discussions on theoretical and methodological aspects of settlement archaeology tend to be dominated by Anglo-American scholarship associated with the emergence of the New Archaeology's systemic view of culture and its ecological outlook in which settlement pattern analysis became a crucial approach. Few people are aware that a scholar of Chinese origin, K.C. Chang, contributed substantially to these debates already since the 1950s and introduced western practices of settlement archaeology to China in the 1980s. Since then, numerous international collaborative projects in China have provided a fruitful basis for an exchange of ideas between different scholarly traditions and providing opportunities for methods developed in the West to be tested in a different cultural and environmental context. The present paper traces these developments, highlighting the extent of the Chinese contributions and concluding with some thoughts on the standing of Chinese archaeology within the field of archaeology worldwide.

Abstract:2021 marked the 100th anniversary of modern scientific archaeological excavation in China. After a remarkable century-long journey, archaeology in China is arguably in its 'golden age' (Flad Citation 2021 ). It attracts not only significant governmental funding but also increasing public interest, leading to an unparalleled boom of data accumulation and the appearance of many sub-disciplines, including public archaeology and cultural heritage studies. However, just like in its neighboring Asian countries, the development of archaeology in China has been closely entangled with changing intellectual traditions, political frameworks, theoretical underpinnings, and methodological innovations, giving rise to what some scholars would call a Chinese school of archaeology (L. Zhang Citation 2013 ).

Abstract:ABSTRACTThis study conducted a bibliometric analysis of Chinese politics research from 2001 to 2020 (N = 11,285) using Social Sciences Citation Index data. The number of publications in the field by scholars from Mainland China surged in the past 20 years; however, their influence on academia remained limited. Chinese institutions serve as the major hubs of collaborative networks. Using structural topic models, we identified 25 research topics that can be categorized in three clusters. In the past 20 years, scholars from Mainland China steered the focus of Chinese politics by causing a reduction in the proportion of international relation topics and an increase in the proportion of political economy topics. Domestic politics topics had the most citations. Scholars from Mainland China have made contributions to better research methods in the field. This article is a comprehensive view of Chinese politics research using a tool that is rarely used by political scientists. It depicts how studies of Chinese politics influence academia from a bibliometrics perspective.

Big Fishes in a Big Pond: A Comparison Between Foreign and Chinese Academics’ Research Influence in Mainland China

Abstract:This article investigates the research influence (as indicated by citations and the SCImago quartile classification of target journal of publication) as per Global Western standards of foreign and Chinese academics in mainland China. The focus on research influence echoes the policy shifts in Chinese research from quantity to quality. This study analyses Scopus publications by foreign academics working in 15 research-intensive Chinese universities, comparing them with publications by Chinese colleagues in the same meso-institutional level (departments, schools, institutes) with same sex and academic rank, but with a doctoral degree attained in China. Findings show that foreign academics’ publications attract more citations, and, once checking by covariates, they are also more likely to publish in first quartile Scimago journals. Chinese academics’ publications, in comparison, tend to be in journals with higher Scimago quartile ranks on average. The study also reveals that foreign academics have more international co-authorships than their Chinese counterparts, despite this latter point being not necessarily conducive of more influent research.

Abstract:In the context of the "Double First-Class" plan for Chinese higher education, the internationalization of discipline becomes an inevitable trend. The "Prosperity Project of Philosophy and Social Science (2011—2020),"which was formulated by Ministry of Education (MOE) and Ministry of Finance (MOF), also put forward the "go global" and "bring in" strategies. The internationalization of references is not only an important means to realize the strategy of "bring in" but also an indicator to measure scholars' international vision. Therefore, this paper does an empirical study on Library and Information Science (LIS). Sixteen journals indexed by the Chinese Social Sciences Citation Index (CSSCI) since 1998 are selected to explore the internationalization of references in LIS journal papers and to reveal the scholars' international vision. The paper then explores the factors affecting the internationalization of references and puts forward some specific suggestions for the internationalization of LIS in China.

Abstract:Ecological civilization is an important paradigm proposed by China in the context of growing local environmental challenges. The application of ecological civilization may have a spillover effect on the globe. To understand how the paradigm is interpreted by the international academic community and its Chinese counterpart, a bibliometric map of related articles published between 2000 and 2019 was mapped according to the identities of the collected Chinese and international bibliographies (9196 in CNKI and 664 in WoS). The keyword frequency statistics confirm that the concept of ecological civilization has been frequently connected to visions of sustainable development within and outside of China. The chronology of publication numbers and keyword bursts indicated that the studies related to ecological civilization have gained significant traction in China due to official support and the subjects of the research are sensitive to the change in leadership. The much lower publication number of international studies and China-centered co-authored studies indicate that the international community is less enthusiastic about ecological civilization. This may become a barrier to fostering consensus about international collaboration on mutually beneficial sustainable development. Based on the keyword burst analysis, this study is the first to reveal that green development is currently a shared interest in China and internationally in the literature on ecological civilization; international collaboration pursuing green development may be a path to realize global sustainable development goals. Further systemic review of the contents of individual research may need to be conducted to confirm and refine the findings of this bibliometric analysis.

A Chinese academic tradition examined in the context of international academic communication: exploratory research into Shang Que articles

Abstract:Purpose Academic contention occurs when research evidence is amenable to more than one interpretation. China has a long tradition of Shang Que (商榷), in which authors argue for their preferred interpretation. The modern form of this tradition is the Shang Que article, which often takes the form of research papers in Chinese-language journals and which tends to be question-oriented. Shang Que articles usually take the views of a particular author or article as the focus of independent and complete criticism by another, independent, academic. This paper explains the role of Shang Que articles in Chinese scholarship and their influence on international academia. Design/methodology/approach A bibliometric analysis was used to explore the characteristics and evolution of Chinese Shang Que articles using 30,577 articles published between 1979 and 2018. Microsoft Excel and Gephi were used for data analysis and visualization. Findings Findings suggest a decline in the number of Shang Que articles and an increase in the number of co-authors. Shang Que articles remained particularly prominent in Philosophy and Humanities and Social Sciences, where they focused on local issues such as classical Chinese, the Sinicization of Marxism and Chinese literature. This suggests that the number of Shang Que articles is related to the degree of internationalization of a research field. Originality/value Shang Que articles, which have been influenced by academic paradigms in English, are a fusion of China's Shang Que tradition and of the modern academic system. Through considering Shang Que articles, this paper explores the benefits of local academic traditions in non-English-speaking cultures.

Quantitative Analysis and Challenges of Chinese Human Geography in the International Academia Since 2000

Abstract:This article presents an analysis on international journals in the broad discipline of human geography indexed by the US Institute for Scientific Information (ISI),including 115736 articles from 156 Social Science Citation Index (SSCI)journals published during 2000-2013.It examines the performance,trends,characteristics,and challenges of Chinese human geography in the process of internationalization by an in-depth analysis of knowledge production in terms of the number of papers,citations,and top institutions and scholars in current human geography literature.The results show that:First,contemporary human geography is comprised of orthodox geographies (for example,economic geography,urban geography,cultural geography,and political geography),environmental studies,urban studies,development and planning,and economics,which are interconnected.There is an evident shift of western human geography towards social and cultural dimensions.Second,it is an indisputable fact that China has emerged as an important contributor for international literature in human geography in recent years with respect to not only the amount of paper production,but also highly influential publications and leading institutions and scholars.Nevertheless,at present China is not in the position to challenge the Anglo-American hegemony in the global pattern of human geography.Third,Chinese human geography is highly characterized by developmentalism and empiricism,being excluded from the mainstream fields of human geographical strands and epistemologies.Lastly,there exist huge gaps in the areas of cultural and social geography,innovation-based studies,social networks,and regional governance between Chinese and international studies,which requires a timely research agenda to promote reform of current institutions of China's educational and research systems,and to make fruitful dialogues with external scholarship.

Abstract:The present study endeavors to unveil the progression of research subjects within the realm of China's ecotranslatology studies through the examination of journal papers in the databases of China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) and Web of Science (WOS) from 2001 to 2022, utilizing CiteSpace software for mapping and analyzing cooccurrences among authors, institutions, and keywords. The findings indicate that within ecotranslatology studies, a prominent theory-founding research group represented by Hu Gengshen has been established, yet no comparable clusters have been identified among scholars engaged in debate or applied studies. Additionally, a lack of effective cooperation and diversity among research entities as well as inadequate responses to questions and concerns have been observed. Furthermore, research focuses have undergone a shift, progressing from theory founding studies (2001–2008) to confirmation and verification studies (2009–2014) and finally to revision and applied studies (since 2015). Additionally, research topics have transitioned from grand, abstract theoretical foundations to subtle, specific theory revisions and applied translation studies, yet a dearth of quantitative research, comparative studies, or field studies have been conducted. In conclusion, it is suggested that future ecotranslatology studies should be more responsive to doubts and questions, cultivate diverse research entities, and place greater emphasis on field investigation within qualitative research.

Chinese Universities’ Cross-Border Research Collaboration in the Social Sciences and Its Impact

Abstract:This paper examined the coauthorship patterns in Chinese researchers’ cross-border research collaboration in the social sciences based on articles and reviews indexed in the Scopus database (2010–2019). We explored the evolution of coauthorship patterns by proportion of collaboration, year, research field, country/region, and research institution; additionally, the quality/impact of the coauthored publications was examined using four levels of paper quality (Q1–4), citations per paper, and FWCI. We found that collaboration between Chinese and international scholars is very common, and more than 40% of all papers published by Chinese scholars from 2010 to 2019 involved cross-border collaboration. The growth in collaboration was very steady over the past 10 years, increasing by an average of 20% per year. United States scholars are the most common research collaboration partners for Chinese scholars in the social sciences, followed by those in Hong Kong, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada. The field of psychology seeks the most collaboration, followed by economics and finance, business and management, and social issues. The percentage of Q1 papers increased from 36% in 2010 to 66% in 2019. Thus, in the past 10 years, Chinese scholars’ cross-border collaboration has grown extensively in terms of both quantity and impact.

Abstract:In recent years,Chinese social scientists have made some progress in the internationalization and greatly enhanced their international reputation.However,some Chinese scholars have a biased understanding on the academic internationalization.This article criticized theacademic nationalismthat want to boycott internationalization and thecolonial academicthat lack of local consciousness.Internationalization of the social sciences does not just mean English papers,international conferences and journals,more importantly,Chinese scholars should apply scientific research methods,actively participate in international academic dialogue and competition,invent dominant theoretical paradigms,and set up the research agendas with international colleagues.Chinese scholars need to balance the tension between experience and theory,universal rules and national interests,English and Chinese publishing.Internationalization neither meant to follow in Western academia's footsteps nor to degrade the value of native language writing.First-class Chinese writing with global perspective is an integral part of the internationalization of social science in China.

Spatiotemporal distribution patterns of archaeological sites in China during the Neolithic and Bronze Age: An overview

Abstract:A total of 51,074 archaeological sites from the early Neolithic to the early Iron Age ( c. 8000–500 BC), with a spatial extent covering most regions of China ( c. 73–131°E and c. 20–53°N), were analysed over space and time in this study. Site maps of 25 Chinese provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities, published in the series ‘Atlas of Chinese Cultural Relics’, were used to extract, digitalise and correlate its archaeological data. The data were, in turn, entered into a database using a self-developed mapping software that makes the data, in a dynamic way, analysable as a contribution to various scientific questions, such as population growth and migrations, spread of agriculture and changes in subsistence strategies. The results clearly show asynchronous patterns of changes between the northern and southern parts of China (i.e. north and south of the Yangtze River, respectively) but also within these macro-regions. In the northern part of China (i.e. along the Yellow River and its tributaries and in the Xiliao River basin), the first noticeable increase in the concentration of Neolithic sites occurred between c. 5000 and 4000 BC; however, highest site concentrations were reached between c. 2000 and 500 BC. Our analysis shows a radical north-eastern shift of high site-density clusters (over 50 sites per 100 × 100 km grid cell) from the Wei and middle/lower Yellow Rivers to the Liao River system sometime between 2350 BC and 1750 BC. This shift is hypothetically discussed in the context of the incorporation of West Asian domesticated animals and plants into the existing northern Chinese agricultural system. In the southern part of China, archaeological sites do not show a noticeable increase in the absolute number of sites until after c. 1500 BC, reaching a maximum around 1000 BC.

Abstract:This paper applies bibliometrics visualization analysis software CiteSpace-6.1.6 and CNKI as the data source and analyzes the literature published in domestic journals during 1994-2022, in order to understand the development trend and main issues of cross-cultural communication in the field of international Chinese education. The results of bibliometric cluster analysis show that in the past 30 years, the research topics in this field mainly focus on 17 clusters, including “culture”, “Chinese language”, “cultural communication”, “differences”, “international students”, “cultural differences”, “Chinese as a foreign language”, “cultural connotation”, “foreign language teaching” and “cross-cultural”. According to the analysis of cited information, “cultural difference”, “pragmatic mistakes”, “Chinese as a foreign language”, “cultural communication”, “cross-culture”, “cultural teaching” and “cultural difference” are the most concerned topics. “Case study” and “teaching design” are the research trends and hot spots in this field in the past two years. This paper not only reviews the history of cross-cultural studies in international Chinese education, but also looks forward to the future development of cross-cultural studies in international Chinese education.
