Abstract:Recently, it was demonstrated that optical second harmonic generation (SHG) is highly surface specific and can be used as a viable tool for surface studies. We shall review here recent progress in development of this surface probing technique. Specifically, we shall discuss the following problems.

Abstract:The progress of surface science relies heavily on our ability to probe surfaces and interfaces. For this purpose, many techniques have been developed in the past [13.11. Recently, laser methods for material studies have advanced to a highly sophisticated level; one therefore wonders if they can also be applied to surface studies. Indeed, there have been a number of very interesting recent discoveries in this area. It is found that laser-induced fluorescence or resonant ionization can be used to probe angular, velocity, and internal energy distributions of molecules scattered or desorbed from a surface [13.21. Coherent Raman spectroscopy [13.3], laser-induced desorption [13.4], photoacoustic spectroscopy [13, 5], and photothermal deflection spectroscopy [13.6] can be used to study surface states and molecular vibrations of adsorbates. Lately, we have shown that surface second harmonic generation (SHG) is also an effective tool for surface studies [13.7]. We describe here some of our recent work on this topic.

Abstract:Optical second harmonic generation (SHG) and infrared-visible sum-frequency generation (SFG) as surface probes have recently attracted a great deal of attention because of their seemingly unlimited possible applications to all areas of surface science. We review here the recent progress in this field. We first discuss how surface-specific these techniques really are. This is important because the bulk contribution to the signal sets a limit to the sensitivity of such surface probes. We then give a number of examples to illustrate the power of the techniques. Most of them are chosen to show that SHG and SFG are unique in providing specific information about the particular surface or interfacial systems. The following problems will be discussed in some detail. 1. Measurements of molecular nonlinearities and the environmental effect on soluble and insoluble molecular monolayers at air/water interfaces. 2. Studies of molecular orientations of liquid surfaces. 3. Creation and detection of monolayer gratings on crystalline surfaces and measurements of anisotropic surface diffusion. Abstract:Second harmonic generation (SHG) has now been well established as a versatile surface-sensitive probe [1]. It has been used to study electrochemical processes at electrode surfaces, molecular adsorption and desorption at metal and semiconductor surfaces, orientational phase transition of molecular monolayers on water, surface reconstruction and epitaxial growth, and so on. More recently, it has been employed as a tool to monitor monolayer polymerization and other surface reactions [2], to probe polar order of molecules at interfaces [3], and to measure molecular nonlinearity [4]. While most surface techniques are restricted to the solid/vacuum environment, SHG is applicable to nearly all interfaces as long as the interfaces are accessible by light. In addition, SHG has the advantages of being capable of in-situ measurements with high temporal, spatial, and spectral resolutions.

Abstract:Optical second harmonic generation is a fundamental nonlinear effect with a large impact on laser technology and optical imaging/sensing. For most practical applications of second harmonic generation, high conversion efficiency is required. However, many techniques used to achieve high efficiency are limited to fabrication methods and optical energy requirements. Here, we investigate and demonstrate substantial enhancement in the conversion efficiency of second harmonic generation in a nonlinear crystal via the application of wavefront shaping. In a one dimensional understanding of second harmonic generation, a phase offset applied to the fundamental wave has no effect on the intensity of the generated light. We show that when the pump field is not a plane wave, enhanced conversion efficiency can be controlled by the application of a phase mask to the fundamental beam. This investigation of the dependence of conversion efficiency upon the transverse phase profile of the incident pump laser yields the promise of new ways to enhance nonlinear generation with limited optical energy and without the need for specific fabrication techniques.

Abstract:Surface probing and characterization play an essential role in the progress of surface science and technology (1) . For this purpose, a large number of experimental methods have been developed, but they are often limited in their applicabilities. New surface probes are always in great demand. Among the existing techniques (1) , many involve emission, adsorption, or scattering of massive particles; only a few rely on optical probing. The optical methods have, in general, the advantages of being nondestructive, capable of in-situ remote sensing with high spatial and tc mporal resolution, and applicable to any interface accessible by light. The difficulty of these methods oft en lies in the lack of surface specificity and sensitivity. Linear optical absorption and reflection, for example, can be employed for sur face studies only if the dominant bulk contribution to the signal can be discriminated against (2) . The same is true with light scattering. Recent advances in lasers and optical detection systems have led to the invention of several novel surface tools. Laser-induced desorption (3) , photo acoust ic spectroscopy (4) , and photothermal deflection spectroscopy (5) have been developed for spectroscopic studies of adsorbates and sur face states. Resonance fluorescence (6) and multiphoton ionization (7) have been used to measure energy redistribution in molecules scattered or desorbed from a surface. Abstract:The importance of interfaces for material science and electronic devices has stimulated great interest in the development of surface analytical tools. Among them, modern optical techniques using lasers have attracted the most attention in recent years. They have the advantage of being applicable to all interfaces accessible by light, and the high temporal, spatial, and spectral resolutions offer unique opportunities for studying ultrafast molecular dynamics and other transient phenomena at interfaces. Optical second harmonic generation (SHG) and sum-frequency generation (SFG) are particularly being noticed because of the many recent successful demonstrations of their versatility. This article briefly introduces these newly developed surface probes, first outlining the basic principles behind surface SHG and SFG, and then illustrating the power of the techniques with selected examples. A more complete treatment of the theory can be found in References 4–6. An overview of the earlier applications can be found in Reference 3.SHG arises from the nonlinear polarization P(2)(2ω) induced in a medium by an incident laser field E(ω). In the electric dipole approximation, P is given by:where is a second-order nonlinear susceptibility. For a medium with inversion symmetry, it follows directly from Eq. 1 that = 0. However, at an interface the surface nonlinear susceptibility is nonvanishing because there the inversion symmetry is necessarily broken.

Abstract:As an important branch of nonlinear optics, second harmonic generation ( SHG) is becoming one of the most important means to characterize crystal structure. Among various methods of characterization, because of nondestructive detection, high stability, tunability, ultrafast response, polarization sensitivity, versatility and simplicity, SHG is widely used to characterize the structure of two-dimensional (2D) materials. It provides important information for the physical properties and functional applications of 2D materials, as well as greatly promotes the rapid development of basic research on 2D materials. Here, the current state of the art focuses on the recent research work of SHG in 2D material structure characterization. Firstly, the principle of the second harmonic generation is briefly introduced. Then, the second harmonic generation device with femtosecond laser connected to confocal Raman spectrometer is taken as an example to present the mechanism of SHG. Afterwards, the applications of SHG are demonstrated in the thickness of interlayer stacking of 2D materials, the stacking angle between different layers of 2D materials, the grain boundary and the crystal orientation of monolayer 2D materials. The second harmonic intensity is used as a direct and sensitive means to monitor the strain amplitude, and the SHG signal changes are used to track defects in materials. Meanwhile, the importance of multi-dimensional correlation analysis of second harmonic generation, Raman spectroscopy and photoluminescence in comprehensive and in-depth characterization of materials is also explored. Finally, the potential research directions and prospects based on SHG in material characterization in the future is prospected.

Abstract:A single molecular layer is generally sufficient to produce observable optical second harmonic generation (SHG). Furthermore, the selection rules governing this process make the SHG from a single monolayer often stronger than that from the medium supporting the monolayer. We have studied SHG from various Langmuir-type monolayers (i.e. monolayers spread on a water surface) in the following contexts: (1) Study of chemical reactions (e.g. polymerization) and two-dimensional phase transitions in molecular monolayers on water. (2) Development of a new technique to evaluate optical nonlinear coefficients of organic molecules, and their relationship to the molecular structure.
Surface Second Harmonic Generation in Centrosymmetric Molecular Crystalline Materials: How Thick is the Surface?

Abstract:Second harmonic generation (SHG) is forbidden in centrosymmetric molecular materials. However, a signal is frequently observed from interfaces where the symmetry is broken. Whereas the effect can be phenomenologically accommodated, an ab initio qualitative and quantitative description has remained elusive, preventing the exploration of fascinating questions such as how deep below the surface the second harmonic can still be generated. To answer such questions, we present an ab initio multiscale approach to compute the total and layer-dependent intensity of surface SHG from molecular crystals. The microscopic origin of surface SHG is identified in layer-dependent models with embedding partial charges combined with density functional theory. The models show increasing symmetry-breaking distortions of the electron cloud around the molecules as the surface layer is approached. The SHG at the molecular level is determined using time-dependent density functional theory and then brought to the scale of macroscopic films through a rigorous self-consistent multiple scattering formalism capable of predicting the measurable optical intensities of the generated second harmonic signal. We study crystalline molecular films with centrosymmetric unit cells of 7,9-Dibromobenzo[h]quinolin-10-ol. The intensity of the SHG at the surface layer is two orders of magnitude larger than at the next layer below and three orders of magnitude larger than two layers below. Besides providing fundamental understanding, our approach can be used for designing and optimizing optical devices containing nonlinear molecular materials, such as molecular laminates. We show that a relatively basic Kretschmann-like setup can enhance the surface SHG of a crystalline film of centrosymmetric molecular unit cells a thousand times.

Strong Localization of Near-Field Second-Harmonic Generation for Nonlinear Mesoscopic Surface Structures

Abstract:The combination of scanning near-field optical microscopy (SNOM) and second-harmonic generation (SHG) spectroscopy provides a superior way, sensitive on an atomic scale, to analyze surface structures in a subwavelength resolution. We apply the self-consistent integral equation formalism to investigate the optical near field of SHG for mesoscopic nonlinear surface structures excited by a total internal-reflection beam. SHG near field is shown to strongly depend on the polarization state of excitation light. However, in various polarization states, they all exhibit a much stronger lateral localization effect than fundamental wave. This contrast can be attributed to the different interference features of elementary and secondary near field for fundamental and second-harmonic waves. Such a strong three-dimensional localization effect of SHG near field is of much convenience to an experimental observation of mesoscopic surface structures with use of SNOM. [S0163-1829(99)02419-4].

Abstract:We study optical surface second-harmonic generation (SHG) from the plasmonic nanoshells because they can improve and enhance nonlinear optical effects. We also investigate the SHG from the surface of spherical and cylindrical core-shell nanoparticles coated with a strong nonlinear material such as graphene due to its attractive plasmonic behaviour and unique properties of the surface plasmons in graphene. We demonstrate theoretically a giant and tunable second-order harmonic radiation which enhanced through the excitation of the surface plasmon resonance, can be observed at the surface of both spherical and cylindrical nanoshells because of symmetry-breaking at interface, which makes SHG as a valuable and powerful technique for applications in sensing and surface spectroscopy. We present the surface SHG strongly depends on the particle shape and size, the dielectric of embedding medium and core, the type of metal and graphene as a coating nonlinear material.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials have brought a spectacular revolution in fundamental research and industrial applications due to their unique physical properties of atomically thin thickness, strong light-matter interaction, unity valley polarization and enhanced many-body interactions. To fully explore their exotic physical properties and facilitate potential applications in electronics and optoelectronics, an effective and versatile characterization method is highly demanded. Among the many methods of characterization, optical second harmonic generation (SHG) has attracted broad attention because of its sensitivity, versatility and simplicity. The SHG technique is sufficiently sensitive at the atomic scale and therefore suitable for studies on 2D materials. More importantly, it has the capacity to acquire abundant information ranging from crystallographic, and electronic, to magnetic properties in various 2D materials due to its sensitivity to both spatial-inversion symmetry and time-reversal symmetry. These advantages accompanied by its characteristics of non-invasion and high throughput make SHG a powerful tool for 2D materials. This review summarizes recent experimental developments of SHG applications in 2D materials and also provides an outlook of potential prospects based on SHG.

Abstract:A recently-developed ab initio theory of second harmonic generation (SHG) spectroscopy of semiconductor surfaces is used to develop a new 'modified' semi-empirical tight binding model (SETBM) of SHG spectroscopy. Some key quantitative features of experimental SHG spectra for H- and Ge-covered Si(001) are not well explained by a simple two-parameter SETBM, despite its success in explaining linear semiconductor surface spectra. The ab initio theory identifies the source of this short-coming as the stronger contribution of optical transitions involving surface atom/adatom states to the SHG response, and is then used to quantify additional SETBM parameters describing these transitions, resulting in a complete, accurate, and convenient description of surface orbital hybridization and experimental results. Abstract:In recent years, the phenomenon of optical second harmonic generation (SHG) has attracted significant attention as a pivotal nonlinear optical effect in research. Notably, in low-dimensional materials (LDMs), SHG detection has become an instrumental tool for elucidating nonlinear optical properties due to their pronounced second-order susceptibility and distinct electronic structure. This review offers an exhaustive overview of the generation process and experimental configurations for SHG in such materials. It underscores the latest advancements in harnessing SHG as a sensitive probe for investigating the nonlinear optical attributes of these materials, with a particular focus on its pivotal role in unveiling electronic structures, bandgap characteristics, and crystal symmetry. By analyzing SHG signals, researchers can glean invaluable insights into the microscopic properties of these materials. Furthermore, this paper delves into the applications of optical SHG in imaging and time-resolved experiments. Finally, future directions and challenges toward the improvement in the NLO in LDMs are discussed to provide an outlook in this rapidly developing field, offering crucial perspectives for the design and optimization of pertinent devices.
