Abstract:Optical second harmonic generation is a fundamental nonlinear effect with a large impact on laser technology and optical imaging/sensing. For most practical applications of second harmonic generation, high conversion efficiency is required. However, many techniques used to achieve high efficiency are limited to fabrication methods and optical energy requirements. Here, we investigate and demonstrate substantial enhancement in the conversion efficiency of second harmonic generation in a nonlinear crystal via the application of wavefront shaping. In a one dimensional understanding of second harmonic generation, a phase offset applied to the fundamental wave has no effect on the intensity of the generated light. We show that when the pump field is not a plane wave, enhanced conversion efficiency can be controlled by the application of a phase mask to the fundamental beam. This investigation of the dependence of conversion efficiency upon the transverse phase profile of the incident pump laser yields the promise of new ways to enhance nonlinear generation with limited optical energy and without the need for specific fabrication techniques.

Abstract:The progress of surface science relies heavily on our ability to probe surfaces and interfaces. For this purpose, many techniques have been developed in the past [13.11. Recently, laser methods for material studies have advanced to a highly sophisticated level; one therefore wonders if they can also be applied to surface studies. Indeed, there have been a number of very interesting recent discoveries in this area. It is found that laser-induced fluorescence or resonant ionization can be used to probe angular, velocity, and internal energy distributions of molecules scattered or desorbed from a surface [13.21. Coherent Raman spectroscopy [13.3], laser-induced desorption [13.4], photoacoustic spectroscopy [13, 5], and photothermal deflection spectroscopy [13.6] can be used to study surface states and molecular vibrations of adsorbates. Lately, we have shown that surface second harmonic generation (SHG) is also an effective tool for surface studies [13.7]. We describe here some of our recent work on this topic.

Abstract:Surfaces and interfaces of magnetic nanostructures can reveal rather interesting and unusual properties that differ substantially from those of bulky materials. Here we apply the surface-sensitive method of optical second harmonic generation (SHG) for the studies of magnetization induced effects that appear in the nonlinear reflection from interfaces between ferromagnetic (Co) and heavy metals (Pt, Ta, W, Au, Ag, Cu). We demonstrate the appearance of magnetization induced variation in the p-polarized SHG intensity in the geometry of the longitudinal magneto-optical Kerr effect that is forbidden for homogeneous magnetic structures. This confirms the existence of chiral magnetic states at heavy metal/ferromagnet interfaces that appear due to the surface-induced Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. The related nonlinear chiroptical effect in the SHG intensity is proportional to the dc flexo-electric polarization that is shown to exist for chiral magnetic states at the considered interfaces.

Abstract:Structured light characterized by spatially inhomogeneous optical fields found rich applications in optical communication, sensing, microscopy, manipulation, and quantum information. While generation of structured light has been extensively studied in linear optics, the nonlinear optical process, particularly in two-dimensional (2D) materials, is an emerging alternative for generating structured light at shorter wavelengths. In this work, we theoretically demonstrate that radially and azimuthally polarized beams and vortex beams carrying orbital angular momentum could be generated at second-harmonic frequencies by using 2D material-based metasurfaces comprising the same transition-metal dichalcogenide meta-atoms. Manipulation of translations and orientations of anisotropically nonlinear meta-atoms exhibiting a threefold rotation-symmetrical crystalline structure induces strong nonlinear spin-orbital coupling, which enables simultaneous control of spatial phase and polarization in second-harmonic generation. The nonlinear transition-metal dichalcogenide metasurface proposed is promising for on-chip integration of nonlinear generation of structured light.

Abstract:We theoretically consider magnetization dynamics in a ferromagnetic slab induced by the magnetic field of a strong femtosecond laser pulse. The longitudinal geometry, in which the initial magnetization lies in both the plane of incidence and the sample plane, is studied. The magnetization oscillations at the optical wave frequency are calculated with the use of the Kapitza pendulum approach taking into account that the optical frequency is much greater than the magnetization oscillation eigenfrequency. We study the reflection of the electromagnetic wave from a ferromagnet %with such a dynamics and show that this laser-induced low-frequency magnetization dynamics leads to the appearance of the second-order nonlinearity in the Maxwell's equations, which in turn gives rise to both the second harmonic generation (SHG) and rectification effect. Although the amplitude of the magnetization oscillations is small, the considered effect may be responsible for the SHG with the efficiency comparable to that of nonmagnetic SHG from metal surfaces. Our estimations show that the suggested mechanism may explain the recent experiments on magnetization induced modulation of the SHG intensity in a ``forbidden'' $P_{in}P_{out}$ combination of incident and reflected waves in cobalt/heavy metal systems, where it can be even more pronounced due to the spin current flow through the ferromagnet/ heavy metal interface.

Abstract:Magnetization-induced optical surface second harmonic generation (SHG) in the longitudinal geometry was used to study magnetism on the p(1x1)O/Fe(001) surface during a layer-by-layer Fe growth with surfactant oxygen. Considerable one-monolayer oscillations were observed. Minima of the magnetization-induced contributions to the second order dielectric susceptibility were detected at half-filled monolayers. These contributions were accessed either by measuring a purely magnetic SHG yield, or indirectly from the magnetization dependence of the overall SHG signal, both providing consistent results. The origin of the oscillatory surface magnetism is consistent with the expected oscillating oxygen induced relaxation due to the surface Fe islands.

Abstract:Second harmonic generation (SHG) has now been well established as a versatile surface-sensitive probe [1]. It has been used to study electrochemical processes at electrode surfaces, molecular adsorption and desorption at metal and semiconductor surfaces, orientational phase transition of molecular monolayers on water, surface reconstruction and epitaxial growth, and so on. More recently, it has been employed as a tool to monitor monolayer polymerization and other surface reactions [2], to probe polar order of molecules at interfaces [3], and to measure molecular nonlinearity [4]. While most surface techniques are restricted to the solid/vacuum environment, SHG is applicable to nearly all interfaces as long as the interfaces are accessible by light. In addition, SHG has the advantages of being capable of in-situ measurements with high temporal, spatial, and spectral resolutions.

Abstract:Surface probing and characterization play an essential role in the progress of surface science and technology (1) . For this purpose, a large number of experimental methods have been developed, but they are often limited in their applicabilities. New surface probes are always in great demand. Among the existing techniques (1) , many involve emission, adsorption, or scattering of massive particles; only a few rely on optical probing. The optical methods have, in general, the advantages of being nondestructive, capable of in-situ remote sensing with high spatial and tc mporal resolution, and applicable to any interface accessible by light. The difficulty of these methods oft en lies in the lack of surface specificity and sensitivity. Linear optical absorption and reflection, for example, can be employed for sur face studies only if the dominant bulk contribution to the signal can be discriminated against (2) . The same is true with light scattering. Recent advances in lasers and optical detection systems have led to the invention of several novel surface tools. Laser-induced desorption (3) , photo acoust ic spectroscopy (4) , and photothermal deflection spectroscopy (5) have been developed for spectroscopic studies of adsorbates and sur face states. Resonance fluorescence (6) and multiphoton ionization (7) have been used to measure energy redistribution in molecules scattered or desorbed from a surface. Nonreciprocal second harmonic generation in a magnetoelectric material

Abstract:Nonreciprocal devices that allow the light propagation in only one direction are indispensable in photonic circuits and emerging quantum technologies. Contemporary optical isolators and circulators, however, require large size or strong magnetic fields because of the general weakness of magnetic light-matter interactions, which hinders their integration into photonic circuits. Aiming at stronger magneto-optical couplings, a promising approach is to utilize nonlinear optical processes. Here, we demonstrate nonreciprocal magnetoelectric second harmonic generation (SHG) in CuB2O4. SHG transmission changes by almost 100% in a magnetic-field reversal of just 10 mT. The observed nonreciprocity results from an interference between the magnetic-dipole- and electric-dipole-type SHG. Even though the former is usually notoriously smaller than the latter, it is found that a resonantly enhanced magnetic-dipole-transition has a comparable amplitude as non-resonant electric-dipole-transition, leading to the near-perfect nonreciprocity. This mechanism could form one of the fundamental bases of nonreciprocity in multiferroics, which is transferable to a plethora of magnetoelectric systems to realize future nonreciprocal and nonlinear-optical devices.

Abstract:Nonlinear optical microscopy is a powerful non-destructive technique that allows to study a wide range of phenomena. Optical third harmonic generation (THG) is mostly known by its applications in investigation of biological structures, while magneto-optical effects in THG are not well recognized. Here we demonstrate high efficiency of the THG probe in studies of magnetic domain structure of epitaxial garnet films. We show that in spite of relatively small values of the magneto-optical effect at the THG wavelength, the THG microscopy may be efficient for the characterization of magnetic surface domains if the THG wavelength falls in the absorption band of a medium. Moreover, the in-depth sensitivity of this probe may be higher as compared to the case of the second harmonic generation microscopy.

Optical Sensing of Magnons Via the Magnetoelastic Displacement

Abstract:We show how to measure a steady-state magnon population in the magnetostatic mode of a ferromagnet or ferrimagnet, such as yttrium iron garnet. We adopt an optomechanical approach and utilize the magnetoelasticity of the ferromagnet. The magnetostrictive force dispersively couples magnons to the deformation displacement of the ferromagnet, which is proportional to the magnon population. By further coupling the mechanical displacement to an optical cavity that is resonantly driven by a weak laser, the magnetostrictively induced displacement can be sensed by measuring the phase quadrature of the optical field. The phase shows excellent linear dependence on the magnon population for a not very large population and can thus be used as a "magnometer" to measure the magnon population. We further study the effect of thermal noises and find a high signal-to-noise ratio even at room temperature. At cryogenic temperatures, the resolution of magnon excitation numbers is essentially limited by the vacuum fluctuations of the phase, which can be significantly improved by using a squeezed light.

Abstract:Optical second harmonic generation (SHG) and infrared-visible sum-frequency generation (SFG) as surface probes have recently attracted a great deal of attention because of their seemingly unlimited possible applications to all areas of surface science. We review here the recent progress in this field. We first discuss how surface-specific these techniques really are. This is important because the bulk contribution to the signal sets a limit to the sensitivity of such surface probes. We then give a number of examples to illustrate the power of the techniques. Most of them are chosen to show that SHG and SFG are unique in providing specific information about the particular surface or interfacial systems. The following problems will be discussed in some detail. 1. Measurements of molecular nonlinearities and the environmental effect on soluble and insoluble molecular monolayers at air/water interfaces. 2. Studies of molecular orientations of liquid surfaces. 3. Creation and detection of monolayer gratings on crystalline surfaces and measurements of anisotropic surface diffusion. Second Harmonic Generation in Topological Insulators under Quantizing Magnetic Fields

Abstract:We theoretically investigate the second harmonic generation (SHG) of topological insulator surface states in a perpendicular magnetic field. Our theory is based on the microscopic expression of the second-order magneto-optical conductivity developed from the density matrix formalism, taking into account hexagonal warping effects on the surface states' band structure. Using numerically exact Landau level energies and wavefunctions including hexagonal warping, we calculate the spectrum of SHG conductivities under normal incidence for different values of magnetic field and chemical potential. The imaginary parts of the SHG conductivities show prominent resonant peaks corresponding to one-photon and two-photon inter-Landau level transitions. Treating the hexagonal warping term perturbatively, these transitions are clarified analytically within a perturbation theory from which approximate selection rules for the allowable optical transitions for SHG are determined. Our results show extremely high SHG susceptibility that is easily tunable by magnetic field and doping level for topological surface states in the far-infrared regime, exceeding that of many conventional nonlinear materials. This work highlights the key role of hexagonal warping effects in generating second-order optical responses and provides new insights on the nonlinear magneto-optical properties of the topological insulators.

Abstract:Based on density functional theory with the generalized gradient approximation plus on-site Coulomb repulsion method, we study the magnetic-ordering dependence of second-harmonic generation (SHG) in a polar magnet BiCoO(3). The large second-order optical susceptibility, which can reach 3.7x10(-7) esu, exhibits a strong magnetic-ordering dependence, giving rise to magnetic-field controllable SHG response in polar magnets.
