Abstract:Optical second harmonic generation (SHG) and infrared-visible sum-frequency generation (SFG) as surface probes have recently attracted a great deal of attention because of their seemingly unlimited possible applications to all areas of surface science. We review here the recent progress in this field. We first discuss how surface-specific these techniques really are. This is important because the bulk contribution to the signal sets a limit to the sensitivity of such surface probes. We then give a number of examples to illustrate the power of the techniques. Most of them are chosen to show that SHG and SFG are unique in providing specific information about the particular surface or interfacial systems. The following problems will be discussed in some detail. 1. Measurements of molecular nonlinearities and the environmental effect on soluble and insoluble molecular monolayers at air/water interfaces. 2. Studies of molecular orientations of liquid surfaces. 3. Creation and detection of monolayer gratings on crystalline surfaces and measurements of anisotropic surface diffusion. Abstract:Optical second harmonic generation is a fundamental nonlinear effect with a large impact on laser technology and optical imaging/sensing. For most practical applications of second harmonic generation, high conversion efficiency is required. However, many techniques used to achieve high efficiency are limited to fabrication methods and optical energy requirements. Here, we investigate and demonstrate substantial enhancement in the conversion efficiency of second harmonic generation in a nonlinear crystal via the application of wavefront shaping. In a one dimensional understanding of second harmonic generation, a phase offset applied to the fundamental wave has no effect on the intensity of the generated light. We show that when the pump field is not a plane wave, enhanced conversion efficiency can be controlled by the application of a phase mask to the fundamental beam. This investigation of the dependence of conversion efficiency upon the transverse phase profile of the incident pump laser yields the promise of new ways to enhance nonlinear generation with limited optical energy and without the need for specific fabrication techniques.

Abstract:Although a relatively new area of nanoscience, nonlinear plasmonics has become a fertile ground for the development and testing of new ideas pertaining to light–matter interaction under intense field conditions, ideas that have found a multitude of applications in surface science, active photonic nanodevices, near-field optical microscopy, and nonlinear integrated photonics. In this review, we survey the latest developments in nonlinear plasmonics in three-dimensional (metallic) and two-dimensional (graphene) nanostructures and offer an outlook on future developments in this field of research. In particular, we discuss the main theoretical concepts, experimental methods, and computational tools that are used together in modern nonlinear plasmonics to explore in an integrated manner nonlinear optical properties of metallic and graphene based nanostructures.

Abstract:The importance of interfaces for material science and electronic devices has stimulated great interest in the development of surface analytical tools. Among them, modern optical techniques using lasers have attracted the most attention in recent years. They have the advantage of being applicable to all interfaces accessible by light, and the high temporal, spatial, and spectral resolutions offer unique opportunities for studying ultrafast molecular dynamics and other transient phenomena at interfaces. Optical second harmonic generation (SHG) and sum-frequency generation (SFG) are particularly being noticed because of the many recent successful demonstrations of their versatility. This article briefly introduces these newly developed surface probes, first outlining the basic principles behind surface SHG and SFG, and then illustrating the power of the techniques with selected examples. A more complete treatment of the theory can be found in References 4–6. An overview of the earlier applications can be found in Reference 3.SHG arises from the nonlinear polarization P(2)(2ω) induced in a medium by an incident laser field E(ω). In the electric dipole approximation, P is given by:where is a second-order nonlinear susceptibility. For a medium with inversion symmetry, it follows directly from Eq. 1 that = 0. However, at an interface the surface nonlinear susceptibility is nonvanishing because there the inversion symmetry is necessarily broken.

Abstract:The progress of surface science relies heavily on our ability to probe surfaces and interfaces. For this purpose, many techniques have been developed in the past [13.11. Recently, laser methods for material studies have advanced to a highly sophisticated level; one therefore wonders if they can also be applied to surface studies. Indeed, there have been a number of very interesting recent discoveries in this area. It is found that laser-induced fluorescence or resonant ionization can be used to probe angular, velocity, and internal energy distributions of molecules scattered or desorbed from a surface [13.21. Coherent Raman spectroscopy [13.3], laser-induced desorption [13.4], photoacoustic spectroscopy [13, 5], and photothermal deflection spectroscopy [13.6] can be used to study surface states and molecular vibrations of adsorbates. Lately, we have shown that surface second harmonic generation (SHG) is also an effective tool for surface studies [13.7]. We describe here some of our recent work on this topic.

Abstract:The nonlinear optical effects originating from the light-matter interaction under intense light excitations have enabled numerous novel applications, such as frequency conversion, all-optical modulation, and ultrafast optical switching. Recent years, the development of metamaterials, photonic crystals, and topological optics allow unconventional enhanced nonlinear effects that may potentially exceed traditional nonlinear materials. In this chapter, we discuss the concepts of nonlinear optical effects and introduce several nonlinear optical applications, including broadband terahertz source based on plasmonic metasurfaces, nonlinear Fano resonances, and nonlinear interaction of topological graphene plasmons.

Abstract:We investigate the physical origins of the surface nonlinear susceptibility responsible for surface optical second-harmonic generation. Experiments performed on simple covalent systems were designed to distinguish between the nonlocal electric-quadrupole-type nonlinearity induced by field discontinuity and the local intrinsic, electric-dipole-type nonlinearity of a surface or interface. We find that both mechanisms could operate: The latter usually dominates when the surface layer has a strong structural asymmetry with the fundamental or the second-harmonic frequency at resonance with a dipole-allowed transition.

Abstract:Surface probing and characterization play an essential role in the progress of surface science and technology (1) . For this purpose, a large number of experimental methods have been developed, but they are often limited in their applicabilities. New surface probes are always in great demand. Among the existing techniques (1) , many involve emission, adsorption, or scattering of massive particles; only a few rely on optical probing. The optical methods have, in general, the advantages of being nondestructive, capable of in-situ remote sensing with high spatial and tc mporal resolution, and applicable to any interface accessible by light. The difficulty of these methods oft en lies in the lack of surface specificity and sensitivity. Linear optical absorption and reflection, for example, can be employed for sur face studies only if the dominant bulk contribution to the signal can be discriminated against (2) . The same is true with light scattering. Recent advances in lasers and optical detection systems have led to the invention of several novel surface tools. Laser-induced desorption (3) , photo acoust ic spectroscopy (4) , and photothermal deflection spectroscopy (5) have been developed for spectroscopic studies of adsorbates and sur face states. Abstract:Over the last decade, infrared-visible sum-frequency generation has been developed into a powerful vibrational spectroscopic technique, especially for surface studies. We give here a brief review of the technique and a few recent applications of the technique to liquid and polymer surfaces. We also describe how the technique has found unique applications in our studies of surface melting of ice, ferroelectric ice films, and molecular chirality in chiral liquids. Abstract:Second harmonic generation (SHG) has now been well established as a versatile surface-sensitive probe [1]. It has been used to study electrochemical processes at electrode surfaces, molecular adsorption and desorption at metal and semiconductor surfaces, orientational phase transition of molecular monolayers on water, surface reconstruction and epitaxial growth, and so on. More recently, it has been employed as a tool to monitor monolayer polymerization and other surface reactions [2], to probe polar order of molecules at interfaces [3], and to measure molecular nonlinearity [4]. While most surface techniques are restricted to the solid/vacuum environment, SHG is applicable to nearly all interfaces as long as the interfaces are accessible by light. In addition, SHG has the advantages of being capable of in-situ measurements with high temporal, spatial, and spectral resolutions.

Abstract:Frequency conversion processes, such as second- and third-harmonic generation, are commonly realized in nonlinear optics, offering opportunities for applications in photonics, chemistry, material science and biosensing. Given the inherently weak nonlinear response of natural materials, optically large samples and complex phase-matching techniques are typically required to realize significant nonlinear responses. To produce similar effects in much smaller volumes, current research has been devoted to the quest of synthesizing novel materials with enhanced optical nonlinearities at moderate input intensities. In particular, several approaches to engineer the nonlinear properties of artificial materials, metamaterials and metasurfaces have been introduced. Here, we review the current state of the art in the field of small-scale nonlinear optics, with special emphasis on high-harmonic generation from ultrathin metasurfaces based on plasmonic and high-index dielectric resonators, as well as semiconductor-loaded plasmonic metasurfaces. In this context, we also discuss recent advances in controlling the optical wavefront of generated nonlinear waves using metasurfaces. Finally, we compare viable approaches to enhance nonlinearities in ultrathin metasurfaces, and we offer an outlook on the future development of this exciting field of research.
