Abstract:Electric field modeling of nodular defects is performed to investigate the interaction between defective multilayer coatings and Gaussian profile laser beam. Light intensity is significantly enhanced as large as 6 times within the nodular defects. Different geometries of defects irradiated by laser beams at 0 to 40 deg incident laser angles are analyzed. Nodules with large but shallow seeds, or irradiation of 40 deg p-polarized laser beam, tends to produce the greatest enhancement effect.

Abstract:Along with the development of high energy or high power lasers,especially laser weapon and lasers for controlled nuclear fusion,the laser induced damage threshold of the optical films gradually becomes the bottleneck against the development of the lasers,which is of considerable interest from the world.Laser induced damage mechanism of optical films,test flat and method for laser induced damage threshold were expatiated.The development of researches on the technologies and methods for laser damage resistance of optical films at home and abroad,which included ion beam pretreatment,ion beam or anneal treat-ment,pretest coating with the materials of high refractive index and so on,were analyzed.The pulsed laser deposition with mag-netic filter technology was emphasized in the expectation,and the atom layer deposition was advised to accelerate to develop, which supplied the theoretic base to improve the laser damage resistance of optical films to settle for current requirements.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Plastic deformation and fracture behavior of Cu/V nanoscale metallic multilayers (NMMs) were systematically investigated through in situ transmission electron microscopy testing. Two different types of interfaces: sharp interfaces and interfacial transition zones (ITZs), formed in the as-fabricated Cu/V NMMs. Upon deformation, sharp interfaces and ITZs exert distinct influences on the fracture behavior of Cu/V NMMs. Sharp interfaces can impede the crack propagation by deflecting the crack propagation and blunting the crack tip, while the ITZs can induce microcracks and facilitate the fracture process. These findings shed light on the important roles of interface structures in the deformation of a broad class of NMMs. GRAPHICAL ABSTRACT IMPACT STATEMENT In situ nanomechanical testing reveals critical roles of interface structures on the fracture of Cu/V NMMs, where sharp interfaces imped and deflect cracks but interfacial transition zones facilitate the fracture greatly.
Annular Photonic Crystal Defect Mode For Operation Of Single-Mode Laser

Abstract:In analogy to the impurity levels of semiconductors, optical cavities are created if irregular regions are introduced into the perfect photonic crystals. Photonic crystal single defect cavity is expected to obtain nearly thresholdless laser because it can create wavelength-scale small resonant mode with high-quality factors and high spontaneous emission coupling. In this paper, we have studied a new type of defect called annular microcavity created by drilling a circular hole in a usual defect cylinder in two-dimensional triangular photonic crystal by using the supercell method. The hole within the rod greatly modifies the defect modes by controlling filling fraction of dielectric material from the inner of the defect and lowering symmetry of the defect. It is found that the annular defect provides extra two more variables due to the hole (radius and refractive index) that can be utilized to alter the properties of the defect. And this opens up a new method to achieve and tune acceptor-mode cavity. Moving the hole can split the degenerate modes. The departure displacement determines the splitting space and the departure angle determines symmetry of distributions of electric fields. These results exhibit more advantages over the conventional defects and may be utilized to single-mode operation of microcavity laser.

Abstract:Most of the unit cell models for Z-pinned composite laminates (ZCL) are mesoscopic in scale, where the fiber reinforced zone is modeled as homogeneous but without detailed characterization and failure analysis of the fibers and matrix. This paper proposes a new concurrent multiscale unit cell model to investigate the in-plane micro-damage evolution of ZCL. The novelty worth mentioning is the proposed element-based method to generate random microbuckling spatial fibers in the fiber reinforced zone, where the microbuckling is caused by fiber waviness and fiber crimp, and then the mesh of fiber, Z-pin, matrix, and the interface between Z-pin and matrix is regenerated. In-plane tensile tests (ASTM D3039) are conducted for verification. There is good agreement between experiment and simulation, only with deviations of -0.97% and 2.69% for tensile modulus and fracture initiation stress, respectively. The research indicates that in-plane micro-damage initiates from the interface between Z-pin and matrix. The stress concentration and higher local fiber volume fraction, caused by the microbuckling spatial fibers clustered near the Z-pin, play a major role in the evolution of interface damage, crack initiation and growth.

Abstract:To enable an exploration of the initiation mechanism of nanosecond laser damage on a potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) surface, a defect-assisted energy deposition model is developed that involves light intensity enhancement and a sub-band gap energy level structure. The simulations provide an explanation on why the laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) of the KDP crystal is two orders of magnitude lower than the theoretical value. The model is verified by use of the transient images that appear during the laser damage. In addition, the dimensions of the "dangerous" surface defects that are the most sensitive to the laser damage are proposed. This work enables clarification on the initial energy deposition (IED) and initiation mechanism of the nanosecond laser damage caused by the KDP surface defects on micro-nano scale. It is helpful in understanding the laser-matter interactions and to improve the processing technique for high quality optical components.

Abstract:We report the single-shot damage thresholds of MgF2/ZnS omnidirectional reflector for laser pulse durations from 50fs to 900fs. A coupled dynamic model is applied to study the damage mechanisms, in which we consider not only the electronic excitation of the material, but also the influence of this excitation-induced changes in the complex refractive index of material on the laser pulse itself. The results indicate that this feedback effect plays a very important role during the damage of material. Based on this model, we calculate the threshold fluences and the time-resolved excitation process of the multiplayer. The theoretical calculations agree well with our experimental results.

Abstract:Emotional reactions to anti-smoking advertising (e.g., fear, sadness, anger) may play an important role in promoting smoking-related attitudinal and behavioral change. Overall, 278 youth completed response ratings of 16 different elements of 50 anti-smoking ads made by tobacco-control agencies, tobacco companies, and pharmaceutical companies. Compared with tobacco-control ads, tobacco-company ads were more likely to elicit positive emotions and less likely to elicit negative emotions and to be of interest to youth. Compared with tobacco-control ads, pharmaceutical company ads were less likely to elicit negative emotional responses or cognitively engage youth and more likely to elicit positive emotions. These findings suggest that youth may be unlikely to respond to tobaccocompany advertising in ways that may lead to a lower likelihood of smoking.

Abstract:Abstract The issue of laser-induced damage of transparent dielectric optics has severely limited the development of high-power laser systems. Exploring the transient dynamic behaviors of laser damage on KDP surface by developing multi-physics coupling dynamics model is an important way to reveal the mechanism of nanosecond laser damage. In this work, KDP crystals are taken as an example to explore the mechanism of laser-induced surface damage. Based on the theories of electromagnetic field, heat conduction and fluid dynamics, a multi-physics coupling dynamics model is established for describing the evolution of nanosecond damage processes. The dynamics of laser energy transmission, thermal field distribution and damage morphology during nanosecond laser irradiation are simulated with this model. It is found that the enhancement of light intensity caused by surface defect plays an important role in the initial energy deposition and damage initiation of the laser irradiation area. The evolution of temperature field and crater morphology during subsequent laser irradiation is helpful to understand the laser damage process. The feasibility of this model is verified by the morphology information of typical defect-induced laser damage. This work provides further insights in explaining the laser-induced damage by surface defects on KDP crystals. The model can be also applied to investigate the laser damage mechanisms of other transparent dielectric optics.

Abstract:The thresholds of surface and bulk damage by 10 ns Nd:YAG laser in LN single crystals are measured. The accumulation effect produced by multipulse laser irradiation is also investigated. Temporal transmission measurement is employed to monitor the nonlinear absorption in the crystals during YAG laser irradiation. It turns out that the multiphoton absorption is the main damage mechanism in both surface and bulk damage processes. The direct reasons leading to visible damage are the accompanied stress explosion in the bulk and the thermal melting and etching on the surface. The multipulse damage is mainly the effect of the accumulation of micro-damages.

Abstract:The unavoidable surface defects on the practical processed potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) crystals, especially the most common protuberance defects, which are prone to damage under intense laser irradiation, seriously limit the application of KDP optics in laser fusion facilities. In this work, a defect-induced laser damage explosion model that couples the electromagnetic field and stress field was constructed to reproduce the dynamic damage process and reveal the laser-induced damage mechanisms innovatively. First, the near-field optical modulation to incident lasers was considered to describe the effect of structural parameters of surface defects on the optical transmission performance. A multi-physics field coupled failure model was then established for the first time to explore the laser damage mechanism through the dynamic behaviors of laser damage that reproduced by this model. It was proved that the protuberance defects on KDP crystal surface would lead to severe laser damage with the characteristics of large transverse spalling and longitudinal cracks due to the Rayleigh and stress waves, which well agrees with the results of laser damage experiments. The established damage model is capable of revealing the hazards of protuberance defects, and providing effective guidance for the suppression of surface defects introduced in the optical ultra-precision machining processes.

Abstract:The characteristics of laser induced damage morphology in the bulk of the K9 glass caused by focused nanosecond laser pulse is analyzed in detail. The damage shape looks like a spindle with a large front-end and its thickness gradually decreases on going to the rear end. According to the experimental results, the damaged range can be divided into four zones, namely the filamentary plasma channel, fractures, the fusion zone and the region of varying refractive index. The function of laser pulse energy deposition in space and the expansion pressure of shock wave are deduced, and the corresponding damage morphology is analyzed based on the spatial distribution of pressure. The theoretical analysis agrees with the experimental results.

Abstract:The phenomena and mechanisms of energy deposition and plasma shielding during laser breakdown of transparent dielectrics deserve further discussion. In this work, the formation characteristics of 1064 nm ns pulsed laser-induced fused silica filamentary damage behavior during the bulk damage process were studied using the time-resolved pump-probe technique. The role of plasma shielding in the damage process was also further studied. The results indicate that the filamentary damage formed before the core damage. With the enhancement of laser energy, the filamentary damage length is stable in the initial stage and then begins to grow dramatically, and the core damage location moves towards the front surface of the fused silica. However, the plasma scattering and shielding effects in air and fused silica severely affect the damaged region when the laser energy is further enhanced. It causes rapid decay of the filamentary damage length, while the core damage moves along the optical axis to the rear surface of the fused silica. It was also found that the diameter of the filamentary damage was not significantly affected by the relatively small laser energy.

Abstract:We experimentally investigated the morphology and mechanism of laser-induced damage in the ablation cutting of thin glass sheets with picosecond pulsed lasers and we compared the experimental results to our models. After several passes of laser ablation, we observed two different kinds of damage morphologies on the cross-section of the cut channel. They are distinguished to be the damage region caused by high-density free-electrons and the heat-affected zone due to the heat accumulation, respectively. Furthermore, micro-cracks can be observed on the top surface of the workpiece near the cut edge. The nano-cracks could be generated by high energy free-electrons but opened and developed to be visible micro-cracks by thermal stress generated in the heat-affected zone. The crack length was proportional to the volume of heat-affected zone. Heat-affected-zone and visible-cracks free conditions of glass cutting were achieved by controlling the repetition rate and spatial overlap of laser pulses.

Abstract:Nanotextures, being composed of an array of nanostructures, can manipulate the effective refractive index on the interface between air and optical substrates. Various optical properties, such as antireflection, antifogging, self-cleaning, enhanced absorption, have been achieved by nanotextures. Nanotextures have been considered to have great potential in the high-power laser system because of the single-material configuration. Here, we show design and fabrication of nanotextures on fused silica with high laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) at the wavelengths 355 nm and 532 nm. The manipulation of light field intensity by nanostructures has been studied. When the average period of nanostructures is less than the 1/3 wavelength, the light field intensity in nanostructures can be lower than that in air. This is the theoretical basis for the high LIDT of fused silica nanotextures. Finally, we study laser induced damage performance of nanotextures. The experimental results show that the LIDT of fused silica can be improved by nanotextures. The LIDT of fused silica substrate was improved form 15J/cm2 to 22J/cm2 at the wavelengths 532 nm. This work promotes an application of nanotextures in high power/energy laser area.

Abstract:Lithium niobate (LN) is one of the most important synthetic crystals. In the past two decades, many breakthroughs have been made in material technology, theoretical understanding, and application of LN crystals. Recent progress in optical damage, defect simulation, and on‐chip devices of LN are explored. Optical damage is one of the main obstacles for the practical usage of LN crystals. Recent results reveal that doping with ZrO2 not only leads to better optical damage resistance in the visible but also improves resistance in the ultraviolet region. It is still awkward to extract defect characteristics and their relationship with the physical properties of LN crystals directly from experimental investigations. Recent simulations provide detailed descriptions of intrinsic defect models, the site occupation of dopants and the variation of energy levels due to extrinsic defects. LN is considered to be one of the most promising platforms for integrated photonics. Benefiting from advances in smart‐cut, direct wafer bonding and layer transfer techniques, great progress has been made in the past decade for LNs on insulators. Recent progress on on‐chip LN micro‐photonic devices and nonlinear optical effects, in particular photorefractive effects, are briefly reviewed.

Abstract:The potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) crystals suffer from nanosecond pulse laser irradiation and are susceptible to damage during the operation of ICF system. In particular, the microcracks on the surface of KDP crystals caused by the single-point diamond fly-cutting (SPDF) process are more likely to cause serious damage under the subsequent laser irradiation. However, the mechanism of laser damage is still unclear. A model that can well represents the laser damage response is very important to reveal the mechanism of laser-induced damage. In this work, the electromagnetic field, stress field and temperature field are coupled, the mechanical characteristics of KDP material are considered, and the reasonable strength equation is applied to model the laser damage response of KDP crystal. Then, the conical crack is taken as an example to explore the laser damage response process of KDP crystal caused by surface defects under laser irradiation. It is found that the surface conical cracks have a great influence on the response process and the morphological characteristics of the laser damage. The existence of surface conical crack defects would lead to the extension of the longitudinal cracks beneath the damage crater, which has great disadvantages for the repairing of the laser damage sites. This work is of great guidance for avoiding the defects-induced damage and improving the service life of the crystal applied in ICF systems.

Abstract:The regularities of laser-induced damage of anisotropic materials, such as LiNbO3 and KDP dielectric single crystals, are experimentally studied. It is revealed that the shape of laser-induced damage in the dielectric crystals depends on the elastic symmetry of crystal and the propagation direction of the laser beam. When the beam propagates along the optic axis of crystals, the figures of the laser damage are six-path stars for LiNbO3 and four-path ones for KDP crystals. For the direction parallel to X and Y axes in KDP crystal, the damage has initially cross-like configuration, with further splitting of Z-oriented crack into two cracks in the process of damage evolution, leading to transformation of orthogonal-type damage to a hexagonal-type one.
