Abstract:We reported a simple, robust, and highly sensitive temperature sensor using intrinsic Mach-Zehnder interferometer formed by means of bending a tapered microfiber, embedded in polydimethylsiloxane. The outer temperature perturbations modulate the refractive index of the polymer through thermo-optic and thermal expansion effects of the polymer. This leads to a phase difference between interfering guided modes through the bent-microfiber, which ultimately results prominent wavelength shift in the transmission spectrum. The sensor exhibits a linear temperature response with a sensitivity as high as -6.25nm/°C over the temperature range from 24° to 40 °C. The sensitivity of the sensor increases as wavelength increases.

Abstract:There has been increasing interest in the emerging ionic thermoelectric materials with huge ionic thermopower. However, it’s challenging to selectively tune the thermopower of all-solid-state polymer materials because the transportation of ions in all-solid-state polymers is much more complex than those of liquid-dominated gels. Herein, this work provides all-solid-state polymer materials with a wide tunable thermopower range (+20~−6 mV K −1 ), which is different from previously reported gels. Moreover, the mechanism of p - n conversion in all-solid-state ionic thermoelectric polymer material at the atomic scale was presented based on the analysis of Eastman entropy changes by molecular dynamics simulation, which provides a general strategy for tuning ionic thermopower and is beneficial to understand the fundamental mechanism of the p - n conversion. Furthermore, a self-powered ionic thermoelectric thermal sensor fabricated by the developed p - and n -type polymers demonstrated high sensitivity and durability, extending the application of ionic thermoelectric materials.

Abstract:Conducting polymers have shown appealing performances as sensing materials in various smart sensors such as gas, chemical and biological sensors, owing to their unique physical and electrical properties. This study reports a novel development for the fabrication of visual-aided smart thermal (VAST) sensors. The sensors are based on conducting polymers, temperature-sensitive resin, and liquid crystal molecules via direct scrawling and in situ solventless polymerization. In the VAST sensor, the thermochromism resins and liquid crystals form a visual-aided system with the real-time early warning function and the conducting polymers provide an ultrahigh resolution by the measure of the change of resistivity. Additionally, these VAST sensors also hold the advantages of low cost, using simple tools, high stability, excellent adaptability to arbitrary substrates, wide application fields, and facile large-scale fabrication. These properties are in favor of fabricating smart thermal sensors to satisfy the practical demands, such as the demonstrated temperature detecting system (especially flexible devices with nonplanar surface), thermodefect diagnostic system, smart battery monitoring system, and other environment monitoring.

Abstract:This study presents the development of dihydropyrazine (DHP)‐based polymer semiconductors through rational molecular design for flexible temperature sensors. The research showcases that these DHP‐based polymers exhibit excellent properties, meeting the demands of various industrial applications, including green‐processability, cost‐effectiveness, high sensitivity, and long‐term stability. Flexible temperature sensors based on π–conjugated polymers are well‐suited for diverse applications, including food packaging and human health monitoring. Herein, novel dihydropyrazine (DHP)‐based polymers designed for the development of flexible temperature sensors are introduced. The DHP‐based polymers are synthesized via direct arylation polymerization, eliminating toxic byproducts. Polymers with carboxylate potassium salt side chains, which exhibit high solubility in green solvents like water and alcohol are obtained via post‐polymerization hydrolysis of carboxylate ester chains. Furthermore, a post‐deposition treatment converts the carboxylate potassium salt side chains into carboxylic acid side chains, resulting in highly solvent‐resistant polymers. Notably, these DHP‐based polymers exhibit moderate electrical conductivity in the range of ≈10−4 to 10−1 S cm−1 without the need for additional dopants. Resistor‐type temperature sensors based on the self‐doped DHP‐based polymers, processed with ethylene glycol (EG) on flexible polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrates via blade coating, demonstrate an impressive temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) of up to −1.5% °C−1 (20–60 °C) and outstanding long‐term stability under ambient conditions. This work presents a well‐founded design of π–conjugated polymers that simultaneously fulfill performance, stability, processability, and cost criteria, paving the way for practical applications of flexible and printable temperature sensors.

Abstract:Traditional temperature detection has limitations in terms of sensing accuracy and response time, while chip-level photoelectric sensors based on the thermo-optic effect can improve measurement sensitivity and reduce costs. This paper presents on-chip temperature sensors based on polysilicon (p-Si) waveguides. Dual-microring resonator (MRR) and asymmetric Mach–Zehnder interferometer (AMZI) sensors are demonstrated. The experimental results show that the sensitivities of the sensors based on AMZI and MRR are 86.6 pm/K and 85.7 pm/K, respectively. The temperature sensors proposed in this paper are compatible with the complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) fabrication technique. Benefitting from high sensitivity and a compact footprint, these sensors show great potential in the field of photonic-electronic applications.

Abstract:The linear shrinkage behavior in thermoresponsive diblock copolymer films and its potential application in temperature sensors are investigated. The copolymer is composed of two thermoresponsive blocks with different transition temperatures (TTs): di(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (MEO(2)MA; TT1 = 25 degrees C) and poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (OEGMA(300); TT2 = 60 degrees C) with a molar ratio of 1:1. Aqueous solutions of PMEO(2)MA-b-POEGMA(300) show a three-stage transition upon heating as seen with optical transmittance and small-angle X-ray scattering: dissolution (T < TT1), self-assembled micelles with core-shell structure (TT1 < T < TT2), and aggregation of collapsed micelles (T > TT2). Due to the restrictions in the polymer chain arrangement introduced by the solid Si substrate, spin-coated PMEO(2)MA-b-POEGMA(300) films exhibit an entirely different internal structure and transition behavior. Neutron reflectivity shows the absence of an ordered structure normal to the Si substrate in as-prepared PMEO(2)MA-b-POEGMA(300) films. After exposure to D2O vapor for 3 h and then increasing the temperature above its TT1 and TT2 the ordered structure is still not observed. Only a D2O enrichment layer is formed close to the hydrophilic Si substrate. Such PMEO(2)MA-b-POEGMA(300) films show a linear shrinkage between TT1 and TT2 in a D2O vapor atmosphere. This special behavior can be attributed to the synergistic effect between the restrained collapse of the PMEO(2)MA blocks by the still swollen POEGMA(300) blocks and the impedance of chain arrangement by the Si substrate. Based on this unique behavior, spin-coated PMEO(2)MA-b-POEGMA(300) films are further prepared into a temperature sensor by implementing Ag electrodes. Its resistance decreases linearly with temperature between TT1 and TT2.

Abstract:Humidity sensitive polymeric thin films with an interpenetrating network (IPN) structure were prepared by cross-linking reactions of poly(dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) and poly(glycidyl methacrylate) with 1,4-dibromobutane (DBB) and diethyltriamine (DETA) as cross-linking agents, respectively. The humidity sensors so prepared showed a high sensitivity over a wide range of relative humidity (RH) (20–97%RH) and a small hysteresis (∼2%RH). The response time for adsorption and desorption process between 22 and 84%RH was 4 and 20s, respectively, indicating a fast response. The effects of the concentration of polymers, molar ratio of cross-linking agents and polymers and aging time of the precursor solution for dip-coating on their humidity sensitive properties were investigated.

Abstract:It is essential and of great significance to impart the high mechanical performance, environmental stability, and high sensitivity to the emerging flexible temperature senors. In this work, we design and prepare polymerizable deep eutectic solvent by simply mixing N‐cyanomethyl acrylamide (NCMA) containing an amide group and a cyano group in the same side chain with lithium bis(trifluoromethane) sulfonimide (LiTFSI), and obtain supramolecular deep eutectic polyNCMA/LiTFSI gels after polymerization. These supramolecular gels exhibit excellent mechanical performance (a tensile strength of 12.9 MPa and a fracture energy of 45.3 kJ m−2), strong adhesion force, high temperature responsiveness, self‐healing ability, and shape memory behavior due to the reversible reconstruction ability of amide hydrogen bonds and cyano‐cyano dipole‐dipole interactions in the gel network. In addition, the gels also demonstrate good environmental stability and 3D printability. To verify its application potential as a flexible temperature sensor, the polyNCMA/LiTFSI gel‐based wireless temperature monitor is developed and displays outstanding thermal sensitivity (8.4%/K) over a wide detection range. The preliminarily result also suggests the promising potential of PNCMA gel as a pressure sensor. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved

Abstract:A novel silicone-containing polyelectrolyte (Si-PE) with crosslinked network was prepared by radical copolymerization to obtain a better humidity sensing material. The sensors based on Si-PE prepared with different proportion of the comonomer all exhibited high sensitivity to humidity variation over a wide range of relative humidity (11–96%RH). Their humidity sensitive properties have been investigated. The sensors exhibit very fast response (about 4s) to an abrupt humidity change (97 and 33%RH).

Abstract:A series of thermoresponsive AIE polymers were synthesized through the free radical copolymerization of the thermosensitive N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) monomer, the regulative oligo(ethylene glycol) methacrylate (OEGMA) monomer or methyl methacrylate (MMA) monomer, and the fluorescent tetraphenylethene monomer. By adjusting the loading ratio of NIPAM and OEGMA/MMA, the hydrophilicity of the copolymers can be fine-tuned, which enables further modulation of the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) as well as the detection temperature range. Below the LCST, hydrogen bonds are formed between the polymer chain and water molecules, which leads to good solubility and weak emission of the polymers. Above the LCST, interchain or intrachain hydrogen bonds within polymers are favored to form emissive polymer aggregates.

Abstract:<p>Luminescent films have received great interest for chemo-/bio-sensing applications owing to their distinct advantages over solution-based probes, including their good stability; ease of storage, transport, and recycling; tunable shape and size; and non-invasive nature. In this study, mechanically stable polyurethane/carbon dot (PU/CDs) composite films with dual-emission for ratiometric temperature sensing were prepared. The films exhibited good light transmissivity, flexibility, and ductility. The obtained PU/CDs hybrid films with dual emission exhibited temperature response and reversible properties from 10 °C to 90 °C. At the appropriate reactive ratio of CDs to PU, the fluorescent color of the films shifted over a relatively large range from blue to green to yellow over a large temperature range. These findings indicate that the stretchable hybrid PU/CDs composite films could potentially be applied for colorimetric detection over a large temperature range (10 °C–90 °C). These materials thus have high application value for macroscopic dual-light temperature detection as well as further development of polymer composite modification.</p>

Abstract:Flexible cross–linked polymer films with excellent sensor abilities for ultralow temperature is explored. Significantly, the polymer films exhibits thermoresponsive, featuring phosphorescence color rapidly transforming from blue to green between 80 and 280 K, and there is a linear relationship between the RGB values of afterglow color and temperature. Based on these prominent features, an ultralow temperature sensor is achieved by using these flexible cross‐linked polymer films as thermoresponsive elements. Ultralow temperature storage has sparked considerable attention with the development of the economy, showing promising applications ranging from biomedical to national defense and other fields. However, the development of ultralow temperature detection is constrained by the brittleness of current materials at low temperatures and the complexity of detection techniques. Consequently, the challenge exists in finding efficient solutions to material tolerance issues and achieving rapid detection of ultralow temperature. Herein, a novel flexible cross–linked polymer TPTA@PU film with long afterglow, high phosphorescence quantum efficiency, and excellent mechanical properties are successfully fabricated. Interestingly, the obtained TPTA@PU films demonstrate a notable thermoresponsive behavior, with the afterglow color shifting rapidly from blue to green within the temperature ranges from 80 to 280 K. Additionally, there is a positive linear correlation between the RGB values of the afterglow color and the corresponding temperature. Based on these prominent features, an ultralow temperature sensor is realized by utilizing TPTA@PU films as thermoresponsive elements. This work can be expected to provide more inspiration and possibilities for using RTP materials in a more cutting‐edge field.

Abstract:Traditional fluorescent thermometers are often responsive to stimuli such as acid, moisture, solvents, light irradiation, and other stimuli, thereby limiting their practical applications. This is further intensified by the growing complexity of unconventional scenarios with various interfering stimuli. Here, we develop a versatile fluorescent thermometer featuring fluorophore PTF1 dispersed in a polymer matrix at a low loading. At room temperature, the rigidity of polymer network is high, rendering PTF1 a yellow fluorescence due to its antirigidochromic behavior. Increasing the temperature reduces the rigidity of PTF1, effectively restoring the intrinsic blue fluorescence of PTF1. Benefiting from the excellent encapsulation effect of polymer matrices, this thermometer exhibits an exceptional anti-interference ability. Further, it could be shaped into various forms, enabling temperature measurements in diverse scenarios. Moreover, it could be customized to irreversible working modes, rendering the temperature history with recording features. This work offers a design of a fluorescent thermometer with advanced features unattainable with conventional fluorophores.

Abstract:Polymers have distinctive optical properties and facile fabrication methods that have been well-established. Therefore, they have immense potential for nanophotonic devices. Here, we demonstrate the temperature-sensing potential of SU8-meta-phenylenediamine (SU8-mPD), produced by epoxy amination of the SU-8 polymer. Its properties were examined through a series of molecular structural techniques and optical methods. Thin layers have demonstrated optical emission and absorption in the visible range around 420 and 520 nm, respectively, alongside a strong thermal responsivity, characterized by the 18 ppm °C −1 expansion coefficient. A photonic chip, comprising a thin 5–10 μm SU8-mPD layer, encased between parallel silver and/or gold thin film mirrors, has been fabricated. When pumped by an external light source, this assembly generates a pronounced fluorescent signal that is superimposed with the Fabry–Pérot (FP) resonant response. The chip undergoes mechanical deformation in response to temperature changes, thereby shifting the FP resonance and encoding temperature information into the fluorescence output spectrum. The time response of the device was estimated to be below 1 s for heating and a few seconds for cooling, opening a new avenue for optical sensing using SU8-based polymers. Thermoresponsive resonant structures, encompassing strong tunable fluorescent properties, can further enrich the functionalities of nanophotonic polymer-based platforms. Responsive polymers-based dual fluorescent chemosensors for Zn2+ ions and temperatures working in purely aqueous media

Abstract:We report on the fabrication of responsive double hydrophilic block copolymers (DHBCs)-based dual fluorescent chemosensors for Zn(2+) ions and temperatures and investigate the effects of thermo-induced micellization and detection conditions on the probing sensitivity and binding reversibility of Zn(2+) ions. A novel quinoline-based polarity-sensitive and Zn(2+)-recognizing fluorescent monomer (ZQMA, 6) was synthesized at first. Well-defined DHBCs bearing quinoline-based Zn(2+)-recognizing moieties (ZQMA) in the thermoresponsive block, PEG-b-P(MEO(2)MA-co-OEGMA-co-ZQMA), were synthesized via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization of 2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethyl methacrylate (MEO(2)MA), oligo(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether methacrylate (OEGMA), and ZQMA in the presence of PEG-based macroRAFT agent. The OEGMA contents in the thermoresponsive block varied in the range of 0-12.0 mol % to tune their lower critical solution temperatures (LCSTs). At 20 °C, almost nonfluorescent PEG-b-P(MEO(2)MA-co-ZQMA) molecularly dissolved in water and can selectively bind with Zn(2+) ions over other common metal ions, leading to prominent fluorescence enhancement due to the coordination of ZQMA with Zn(2+). At a polymer concentration of 0.2 g/L, the Zn(2+) detection limit can be down to ~3.0 nM. PEG-b-P(MEO(2)MA-co-ZQMA) self-assembles into micelles possessing P(MEO(2)MA-co-ZQMA) cores and well-solvated PEG coronas upon heating to above the LCST, and the fluorescence intensity exhibit ~6.0-fold increase due to the fact that ZQMA moieties are now located in a more hydrophobic microenvironment. Compared to the unimer state at 20 °C, although PEG-b-P(MEO(2)MA-co-ZQMA) micelles possess a slightly decreased detection limit for Zn(2+) (~14 nM), reversible binding between ZQMA moieties and Zn(2+) ions at 37 °C can be achieved, as evidenced by the on/off switching of fluorescence emission via the sequential addition of Zn(2+) and EDTA. In vitro fluorescence imaging studies suggested that the micelles can effectively enter into living cells and sensitively respond to Zn(2+) ions. This work represents the first example of a purely aqueous-based polymeric Zn(2+) sensing system by integrating the well-developed small molecule Zn(2+)-sensing moieties with stimuli-responsive DHBCs.
Thermochromic and Conductive Hydrogels with Tunable Temperature Sensitivity for Dual Sensing of Temperature and Human Motion

Abstract:Skin-like body sensors have important applications in soft-bodied intelligent robots, electronic skins, and medical health monitoring. Accurate sensing of pressure and temperature are two core elements of skin-like sensors that mimic skins. Skin-like sensors convert sensed external stimuli such as pressure and temperature into electrical signals, enabling visual monitoring of external environmental stimuli. However, there are very limited reports on hydrogels-based and dual stimuli-responsive (strain/temperature) sensors. To this end, we report a highly flexible strain/temperature dual stimuli-responsive sensor based on poly(acrylamide) (PAAM) hydrogels. Our prepared conductive ionic hydrogels are endowed with the ability to undergo phase changes at different temperatures by introducing inexpensive and stable sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) thermotropic phase-change units, which can turn from opaque to transparent within 10 s when temperature is increased, and to opaque again when temperature is decreased. In this study, we have succeeded in producing a dual-responsive multifunctional ionic conductive hydrogel (SN-PAAM) that is responsive to temperature/strain dual stimuli and has excellent mechanical properties: high tensile strength (581 kPa), extra long elongation (1,836%), high sensitivity (GF = 1.62 to 2.46), and short response time (120 to 130 ms). To the best of our knowledge, these combined functions are not achievable with conventional strategies. Therefore, the hydrogels developed in this research could have good prospects for different applications such as flexible wearable devices, skin-like sensors, visualization of bionic skins, dual response interactive devices, and in the field of anti-counterfeiting and encryption.

Applicability of Vapor-Deposited Thermoresponsive Hydrogel Thin Films in Ultrafast Humidity Sensors/Actuators

Abstract:Thermoresponsive polymers reversibly react to changes in temperature and water content of their environment (i.e., relative humidity, RH). In the present contribution, the thermoresponsiveness of poly(N-vinylcaprolactam) thin films cross-linked by di(ethylene glycol) divinyl ether deposited by initiated chemical vapor deposition are investigated to assess their applicability to sensor and actuator setups. A lower critical solution temperature (LCST) is observed at around 16 °C in aqueous environment, associated with a dramatic change in film thickness (e.g., 200% increase at low temperatures) and refractive index, while only thermal expansion of the polymeric system is found, when ramping the temperature in dry atmosphere. In humid environment, we observed a significant response occurring in low RH (already below 5% RH), with the moisture swelling the thin film (up to 4%), but mainly replacing air in the polymeric structure up to ∼40% RH. Non-temperature-dependent swelling is observed up to 80% RH. Above that, thermoresponsive behavior is also demonstrated to be present in humid environment for the first time, whereas toward 100% RH, film thickness and index appear to approach the values obtained in water at the respective temperatures. The response times are similar in a large range of RH and are faster than the ones of the reference humidity sensor used (i.e., seconds). A sensor/actuator hygromorphic device was built by coating a thin flower-shaped poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) substrate with the thermoresponsive polymer. The large swelling due to water uptake upon exposure to humid environment at temperatures below the LCST caused the petals to bend, mimicking the capability of plants to respond to environmental stimuli via reversible mechanical motion.
