Abstract:A series of CuMgFe catalysts with different (Cu + Mg)/Fe molar ratios derived from hydrotalcites were prepared by coprecipitation for the hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1,2-propanediol (1,2-PDO). X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), hydrogen temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR), CO2-TPD, and H2-TPD (temperature-programmed desorption of CO2 and H2) were used to investigate the physicochemical properties of the catalysts. The CuMgFe-layered double oxides (CuMgFe-4LDO) catalyst with (Cu + Mg)/Fe molar ratio of 4 exhibited superior activity and stability. The high glycerol conversion and 1,2-propanediol selectivity over CuMgFe-4LDO catalyst were attributed to its strong basicity, excellent H2 activation ability, and an increase in the surface Cu content. The CuMgFe catalysts could be easily recycled with the assistance of an external magnetic field due to their magnetism.

Catalytic Transfer Hydrogenation Of Oleic Acid To Octadecanol Over Magnetic Recoverable Cobalt Catalysts

Abstract:Efficient transformation of biomass into fuel and chemicals under mild conditions with cost-effective and environmentally friendly characters is highly desirable but still challenging. Herein, a scalable and Earthabundant cobalt catalyst was used for selective catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) of unsaturated fatty acids to fatty alcohols with sustainable isopropanol as a hydrogen donor. By tuning the surface Co composition by varying the reduction temperature, the catalytic performance could be easily boosted. At 200 degrees C in 4 h, the optimal catalyst Co-350 (reduced at 350 degrees C) gives 100% oleic acid conversion with 91.9% octadecanol selectivity. Various characterization studies reveal that the co-existence of Co delta+ and Co-0 over the cobalt core might be responsible for its high performance for CTH of oleic acid. This catalyst could be magnetically separated and is highly stable for reusing ten times. Moreover, this cobalt catalyst is relatively cheap and easy to scale-up, thus achieving a low-cost transformation of biomass into high value-added chemicals.

Abstract:Trivalent metal ions M3+ in M-0 02Cu0.4Al1.98(OH)(16)CO3 (M = Ru, Re) layered double hydroxides (LDHs) were successfully synthesized by coprecipitation. Bimetallic M-Cu/solid base catalysts with high metal dispersion were obtained after calcination and H-2 reduction of these LDH precursors. These catalysts exhibited excellent performances for the hydrogenolysis of biomass-derived glycerol under mild conditions. The catalysts were stable when recycled five times. Characterizations indicated that the addition of Ru or Re enhanced the adsorption and activation of hydrogen on the surface of catalysts, which contributed to the high conversion of glycerol. Abstract:A series of bimetallic Pd-Cu/solid-base catalysts were prepared via thermal decomposition of PdxCu0.4Mg5.6−xAl2(OH)16CO3 layered double hydroxides precursors and used in hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1,2-propanediol (1,2-PDO). X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and N2O oxidation and followed H2 titration characterizations confirmed that well structured layered double hydroxides PdxCu0.4Mg5.6−xAl2(OH)16CO3 crystals could be prepared when the amount of added Pd was less than x<0.04. Pd and Cu dispersed highly in reduced PdxCu0.4/Mg5.6−xAl2O8.6−x and Pd improved the reduction of Cu. Hydrogenolysis of glycerol proceeded easily on bimetallic Pd-Cu/solid-base catalysts than separated Pd and Cu. On Pd0.04Cu0.4/Mg5.56Al2O8.56, the conversion of glycerol and selectivity of 1,2-PDO reached 88.0 and 99.6%, respectively, at 2.0MPa H2, 180°C, 10h in ethanol solution. And this catalyst is stable in five recycles. It was concluded that H2-spillover from Pd to Cu increased the activity of PdxCu0.4/Mg5.6−xAl2O8.6−x in hydrogenolysis of glycerol.

Abstract:Homogenously dispersed copper on layered solid base (Cu0.4/Mg5.6Al2O8.6-CP, with 80.1% dispersion of copper) was synthesized via thermal decomposition of the as-synthesized Cu0.4Mg5.6Al2(OH)16CO3 layered double hydroxides. This bi-functional highly dispersed Cu-solid base catalyst is extremely effective for hydrogenolysis of aqueous glycerol. The detected conversion of glycerol reached 80.0% with a 98.2% selectivity of 1,2-propanediol at 180°C, 3.0MPa H2 and 20h. But copper dispersed poorly in those catalysts prepared via impregnation and ion-exchange, and their activities were lower. These precursors and catalysts were characterized by N2-adsorption, X-ray diffraction, scanning electronic microscope, transmission electronic microscope, thermo-gravimetry, temperature-programmed reduction with H2, in-situ XRD, dissociative N2O adsorption and CO2 temperature-programmed desorption. It was confirmed that the as-synthesized Cu0.4Mg5.6Al2(OH)16CO3 showed a well crystallized layer-structure of hydrotalcite and copper dispersed homogenously on the layer-structure of hydrotalcite after thermal decomposition and H2 reduction.
Synergistic Catalysis in Monodispersed Transition Metal Oxide Nanoparticles Anchored on Amorphous Carbon for Excellent Low-Temperature Dehydrogenation of Magnesium Hydride

Abstract:Magnesium hydride (MgH2) has been considered to be one of the most promising solid-state hydrogen storage materials owing to its high hydrogen capacities, excellent reversibility and abundant source. However, the high dehydrogenation energy barrier and poor kinetics embarrass the practical application of MgH2 in fuel cell. Doping nano-catalyst is deemed to be the most effective method to improve kinetics property of hydrogen storage materials, but the nanoparticles generally suffer from agglomeration and inactivation during the cycling hydrogen storage. Here we present a promising strategy to facilely prepare a high-efficiency transition metal oxide nano-catalyst, TiO2 nanoparticles, in which monodispersed single-crystal-like TiO2 nanoparticles are wrapped with amorphous carbon. The in-situ synthesized TiO2 nanoparticles/amorphous carbon catalyst exhibit superior catalytic effect on the dehydrogenation properties of MgH2. A significant reductions of hydrogen desorption temperature (163.5 degrees C) and activation energy (69.2 kJ mol(-1)) have been obtained for the TiO2 nanoparticles/amorphous carbon catalyzed MgH2, which can be fully rehydrogenated with a reversible capacity of about 6.5 wt% at 200 degrees C within 5 min, and then completely dehydrogenated at 275 degrees C within 10 min. It is demonstrated that such significantly improved hydrogen desorption properties can be attributed to the in-situ formation of TiO2 nanoparticles, amorphous carbon and multi-valance Ti species, which play the synergistically catalytic roles in the nano-catalyst. In particular, the presence of amorphous carbon in the catalyst can not only prevent the aggregation and growth of catalyst nanoparticles, but also dramatically reduce the desorption energy value of H in MgH2, according to the density functional theory calculation. This finding opens a new venue for the synthesis of monodispersed single-crystal-like TiO2 nanoparticles/amorphous carbon catalyst with high-activity, safety, low cost, and its practical application in MgH2 and other hydrogen storage systems. Abstract:Reducing catalyst costs and reaction energy consumption is a potent way to advance biorefinery energy from fundamental research to industrial implementation. Herein, we developed a series of low‐cost CuCo/Al2O3 catalysts for hydrodeoxygenation of 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural to biofuel 2,5‐dimethylfuran (DMF). Combined characterizations showed CuCo alloy and Co@CuCo core–shell structures were successfully constructed by reducing layered double hydroxides (LDHs) at different temperatures. Detailed catalytic performance studies found that Co@CuCo catalyst achieved a decent DMF yield of 91.7% under 130°C and 1 MPa H2, which is milder than most literatures. While the CuCo alloy catalyst only gave 23.2% yield. H2‐TPD and in situ‐IR indicated the CuCo‐alloy shell can prevent oxidation of Co core, so that maintain its high H2 dissociation capacity. Moreover, the electronic structure changes in the Cu–Co alloy promote the hydrolysis of CO bond. Hence, the local atomic arrangement and corresponding electronic structure in the Co@CuCo structure jointly strengthened the low‐temperature reactivity.

Abstract:A series of Cu0.4/Zn5.6−xMgxAl2O8.6 catalysts with different Zn/Mg ratios were prepared and used in hydrogenolysis of glycerol in aqueous solution. This reaction proceeded more easily and efficiently over Cu0.4/Zn0.6Mg5.0Al2O8.6 than Cu0.4/Mg5.6Al2O8.6 and Cu0.4/Zn5.6Al2O8.6. The selectivity of 1,2-propanediol is higher than 98.6% in all experiments over Cu0.4/Zn0.6Mg5.0Al2O8.6, and the activity of surface Cu atoms reached 26.6h−1 at 200°C. The structure, morphology, acidity (basicity), and adsorption ability of glycerol/hydrogen for these catalysts were characterized and discussed. It was concluded that the conversion of glycerol depended strongly on the basicity of these Cu-based catalysts and hydrogen spillover also enhanced its performance.
Plate-like Ni–Mg–Al Layered Double Hydroxide Synthesized Via a Solvent-Free Approach and Its Application in Hydrogenolysis of D-sorbitol

Abstract:Layered double hydroxide (LDH) is widely used in adsorption, additive, catalyst precursor and support. In this work, a solvent-free synthesis approach of plate-like Ni–Mg–Al LDH and its application in hydrogenolysis of D-sorbitol was reported. It was found that mainly hexagonal plate-liked LDH crystals (with a diameter of 25–30nm and a thickness of 7.0–10.5nm) formed in Ni3.6Mg2.4Al2(OH)16CO3-SF that synthesized via solvent-free routine. Ni3.6Mg2.4Al2(OH)16CO3-SF possessed higher crystallinity, bigger specific surface area and stronger basicity than its counterpart that synthesized in traditional coprecipitation method. Bi-functional Ni/solid-base catalyst with homogenously dispersed Ni clusters (with a mean diameter of 3.3nm) on separated plate-liked Mg2.4Al2O5.4 sheets could be prepared after controlled calcination and reduction of Ni3.6Mg2.4Al2(OH)16CO3-SF. Ni3.6/Mg2.4Al2O5.4-SF catalyst was highly active and stable for the hydrogenolysis of D-sorbitol under mild conditions.
Tailoring Pd/M@CoAlO Core-Shell Catalyst Morphology for Efficient Methane Oxidation

Abstract:The control of low-concentration methane (CH4) emissions is a critical component of the 'dual carbon' strategy, and catalytic combustion technology focused on catalyst design is recognized as a promising avenue for achieving it. However, the zeolite-based catalysts are highly prone to deactivation under hydrothermal environments, thus limiting their practical applicability. Herein, we have utilized layered double hydroxides (LDHs) as precursors and integrated them with Pd/M through a co-precipitation method to fabricate Pd/M@CoAlO composite catalysts with a core-shell structure, focused on the impact of CoAlO morphology on the activity and stability for CH4 oxidation. It revealed that the incorporation of CoAlO significantly enhanced the catalytic combustion efficiency and the hydrothermal stability of Pd/M. Furthermore, an increase in the calcination temperature led to a progressive degradation of the sheet-like or petal-shaped structure of CoAlO within the Pd/ M@CoAlO composite catalysts. This structural collapse eventually resulted in the formation of CoAlO dense particles that enveloped the Pd/M, adversely affecting the adsorption of oxygen and the exposure of active sites. This work underscores the importance of morphological control, providing significant guidance for the strategic design and development of catalysts tailored for CH4 catalytic combustion.

Abstract:The efficient production of methanol by reduction of CO 2 using green hydrogen is a promising strategy from both a green chemistry and a carbon net zero perspective. Herein, we report the synthesis of well-dispersed core–shell catalyst precursors using silica@Cu x ZnAl-LDHs that can convert CO 2 to methanol. The catalyst precursors can be formed using either a commercially available silica (ES757) or a mesoporous silica ( e.g. MCM-48). These hybrid materials show significantly enhanced catalytic performance compared to the equivalent unsupported Cu x ZnAl LDH precursor. Space-time yields of up to 0.7 g MeOH g cat −1 h −1 under mild operating conditions were observed.

Abstract:Abstract The increasing energy and environmental problems have made clean energy-driven catalysis a hot research topic. Methane is an earth-abundant raw material but difficult to be converted by thermochemical processes. It is of great significance to seek novel strategies to convert methane into high-value chemicals. Herein, we synthesize a series of transition metal catalysts based on layered double hydroxide precursors which were used for photothermal methane nonoxidative coupling reactions. The strong photothermal and chemisorption effects of the derived transition metal nanostructures allow the efficient activation of methane molecules. Among them, alumina-supported metallic Ni and NiCo-alloy catalysts show excellent methane nonoxidative coupling activities, achieved hydrogen production rates of 4816.53 μ mol g −1 h −1 and 5130.9 μ mol g −1 h −1 , accompanied by liquid fuels production rates of 59.2 mg g −1 h −1 and 63 mg g −1 h −1 , respectively. The findings, therefore, provide a new strategy for methane nonoxidative coupling driven by light energy at mild conditions.

Abstract:A uniform and highly dispersed CuFe-based catalyst was obtained via a calcination–reduction process of a CuFeMg-layered double hydroxide (LDH) precursor, which exhibits good activity and selectivity towards catalytic conversion of syngas to mixed alcohols. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) reveal that the CuFeMg-LDH precursor possesses high crystallinity with a particle size of 40–60 nm. High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) demonstrate a high dispersion of copper and iron species on the catalyst surface. The CuFe-based catalyst derived from CuFeMg-LDHs shows high CO conversion (56.89%) and the total alcohol yield (0.28 g mLcat.−1 h−1), as a result of the high dispersion of active species as well as the synergistic effect between the copper and the iron species revealed by X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) and H2 temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR) techniques. Therefore, this work provides a facile and effective method for the preparation of CuFe-based catalysts with high catalytic activity, which can be potentially used in syngas conversion to mixed alcohols.

Abstract:This work introduces a thermally stable high‐entropy layered double hydroxide (HE‐LDH), addressing a significant challenge in layered double hydroxides. For the first time, this HE‐LDH is applied directly as a catalyst in thermal catalytic reactions. Its extraordinary thermal stability fully realizes the catalytic advantages of HE‐LDH, with two types of acidic sites further enhancing catalytic selectivity. Layered double hydroxides (LDHs), especially high‐entropy LDHs (HE‐LDHs), have gained increasing attention. However, HE‐LDHs often possess poor thermal stability, restricting their applications in thermo‐catalysis. Herein, a novel complexing nucleation method is proposed for engineering HE‐LDHs with enhanced thermal stability. This approach precisely controls the nucleation of metal ions with different solubility products, achieving homogeneous nucleation and effectively mitigating phase segregation and transformation at elevated temperatures. The prepared HE‐LDH sample demonstrated exceptional thermal stability at temperatures up to 300 °C, outperforming all previously reported LDHs. Importantly, these HE‐LDHs preserve both Lewis and Brønsted acidic sites, enabling the 100% removal of aromatic sulfides and alkaline nitrogen compounds from fuel oils in thermo‐catalytic oxidation reactions. Experimental and characterization findings reveal that the metal‐hydroxide bonds in the prepared HE‐LDHs are strengthened by associated hydroxyl groups, inducing negative thermal expansion and augmenting the presence of acidic sites, thereby ensuring structural stability and enhancing catalytic activity. This study not only proposes a strategy for engineering HE‐LDHs with remarkable thermal stability but also highlights potential applications of LDHs in thermo‐catalysis.

Abstract:Olefin epoxidation is a fundamental reaction in organic chemistry. Herein, a novel magnetic core-shell Fe 3 O 4 @Cu 3 (BTC) 2 metal-organic framework(MOF) heterogeneous catalyst was synthesized for the use in olefin epoxidation. Additionally, the size selectivity of the Fe 3 O 4 @Cu 3 (BTC) 2 catalyst in olefin epoxidation was investigated. Scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and transmission electron microscopy(TEM) results indicated that Fe 3 O 4 @Cu 3 (BTC) 2 presented a microsphere morphology, and Cu 3 (BTC) 2 MOFs were well dispersed on the Fe 3 O 4 (PAA) surface after 10 cycles of the synthesis process. The synthesized magnetic core-shell Fe 3 O 4 @Cu 3 (BTC) 2 heterogeneous catalyst could facilitate efficient aerobic olefin epoxidation. Furthermore, the catalyst was used in the aerobic oxidation of alcohols and was found to exhibit excellent activity for primary alcohols.

Abstract:Biomass glycerol is an important raw material for many available chemicals, such as 1,2-propanediol (1,2-PDO). Hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1,2-PDO is considered as a sustainable process with renewable potential application. By measuring the activity of the catalyst, we found that PdCu-KF/γ-Al2O3 (Pd:Cu:KF=0.05:1:0.5) can be used as an efficient catalyst for hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1,2-PDO, with 98.3% selectivity and nearly 100% conversion (200°C, 2.5MPa initial H2 pressure, 20h).

Abstract:Highly dispersed copper nanoparticles supported on combined alkaline-earth metal oxides MgO-CaO and MgO-SrO were synthesized by impregnation-combustion method and used for hydrogenolysis of glycerol. The nanoparticles were characterized using N2-adsorption, X-ray diffraction, transmission electronic microscope, temperature-programmed reduction with H2, dissociative N2O adsorption and CO2 temperature-programmed desorption. The results revealed that Cu particles dispersed highly on the surface of Cu/MgO-CaO and Cu/MgO-SrO catalyst. The enhanced alkalinity of Cu/MgO-CaO and Cu/MgO-SrO accelerated the conversion of glycerol compared to Cu/MgO. It was concluded that the activity of Cu-based catalyst increased with its alkalinity.
A one-pot hydrothermal synthesis of morphologically controllable yolk-shell structured CoFe glycerate spheres for oxygen evolution reaction

Abstract:CoFe-based catalysts are efficient electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline media. Here, we present a simple one-pot hydrothermal method for synthesizing a series of CoFe glycerates with controllable surface morphologies and investigate their potential as highly efficient catalysts for the OER in alkaline media. These CoFe glycerates exhibit a unique yolk-shell microsphere structure assembled from ultrathin nanosheets. The adjustment of the surface nanosheet size is achieved by varying the CoFe ratio, ensuring a more efficient electrocatalytic system for the OER process. Due to the abundant active sites provided by the yolk-shell structure and interleaved ultrathin nanosheets, Co3Fe1 glycerate (Co3Fe1 gly) demonstrates a low overpotential (283 mV) and a small Tafel slope (44.61 mV dec-1) at 10 mA cm-2. Additionally, Co3Fe1 gly exhibits excellent durability in alkaline electrolytes. Moreover, a series of characterizations demonstrate that the active sites of Co3Fe1 gly are the high-valence Co species generated during the OER process. This study opens a promising avenue for utilizing efficient and low-cost electrocatalysts to enhance OER performance.
