Abstract:We characterize the received signals and propose corresponding detection methods for the visible light communication under weak illuminance. Photo-multiplier tube is employed as the receiver, which can amplify weak photon-level signal down to a series of electrons. It is observed that under the extremely low transmission power, the received signals can be characterized by the discontinuous pulses. As the received power increases, the density of the pulses increases, and finally, the received signals form continuous waveforms. We provide the sampling-based and pulse counting-based transmitted symbol detection methods for the continuous signal waveform and the discontinuous pulses, respectively. We further improve the symbol detection performance by combining the two types of detection schemes. Numerical results show that the pulse counting detection can outperform the sampling-based detection with lower sampling rate, and the combined detection can improve the detection performance.

Abstract:Weak illumination by light emitting diode (LED) can be realized by either peak-power transmission at a low duty cycle or low-power transmission at a regular duty cycle. In this paper, we address the signal characterization and transmission rate of visible light communication for the latter case. We first characterize the LED nonlinear effect via a state transition model based on the experimental measurements. Then, we adopt hidden Markov model (HMM) to characterize the LED transmission under weak illumination. Based on the HMM, we propose a Monte Carlo method to compute the achievable transmission rate and apply Viterbi algorithm to detect the signals. The achievable transmission rates and detection performance of the HMM-based model are evaluated by simulation results. Moreover, both numerical and experimental results show lower bit error rate of the Viterbi algorithm compared with the per symbol detection.

Abstract:A self-powered weak light LED-LED communication was demonstrated, in which the transceiver could be powered by a white LED module. Both OOK and PPM modulations were compared and it was shown the PPM modulation has more advantage under the situation of the low signal to noise ratio. The highest achievable bit rate under the FEC threshold of the bit error rate versus the lowest transmitted optical power of the LED-LED link was investigated. A bit rate of 10Mbps was achieved by 16-PPM with the transmitted optical power less than 100μW.

Abstract:Visible light communication in conjunction with solid state lighting has become an emerging area of interest to achieve lighting and wireless communication simultaneously in an indoor environment. It is anticipated to be a low cost supplement to existing wireless communication technologies. Most existing work has primarily focused on a unidirectional downlink using visible light spectra. The appropriate choice of an uplink to achieve bidirectional communication is a big challenge. In this paper, candidate options of the uplink are compared in terms of device performance, light safety, background interference, and path loss. In visible light communication, white light emitting diodes as optical transmitters are also characterized in terms of impulse response and electrical spectrum. A digital preequalization idea to increase their bandwidth is proposed. Performance of the downlink visible light communication system is also experimentally studied in order to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed design.

Abstract:Visible Light Communication (VLC) has received more and more attention in recent years. In this paper, we propose a novel configuration of unidirectional subcarrier multiplexing (SCM) -wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) -VLC system adopting quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation. Based on this configuration, we successfully demonstrate a 3x1 multiple-input single-output (MISO) OFDM-VLC transmission experiment using three blue phosphor LEDs. The transmission distance can be as long as 140cm. We also demonstrate an 800-Mb/s MISO SCM-WDM VLC transmission experiment based on RGB-LED with 66-cm transmission distance. In the two experiments, pre-equalization and post-equalization both are implemented to compensate for the poor frequency response of LEDs. And the properties of EVM and BER in all channels are measured and analysed.

Abstract:We demonstrate a visible light communication system based on DC-biased optical orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing(DCO-OFDM) and achieve a bit rate of 481 Mb/s at a communication distance of 65 cm by employing single 1 W commercial phosphorescent light-emitting diode(LED). The average bit error rate of the received data is 2.3×10-3, which is below the forward error correction limit, 3.8×10-3. The effect of signal clipping in DCO-OFDM system is studied and resource allocation algorithms are utilized. At least 13% capacity improvement can be obtained by suitable signal clipping and resource allocation.

Abstract:With the emergence of high lumen output white lighting LEDs, visible light communication has become an intriguing technology to realize low cost data transmission in conjunction with lighting. In this paper, we discuss some key issues in practical line-of-sight (LOS) visible light communication system design. They include a transmitter, channel model, and receiver front-end. A transmitter containing white LED arrays should be designed to achieve required lighting distribution and reliable data transmission at the same time. A basic LOS channel model to characterize the path loss and received optical power is also needed for optimization of the receiver under major noise sources. Finally we show a practical indoor LOS visible light communication system to demonstrate some of our analyses.

Abstract:We are seeing a growing use of light emitting diodes (LEDs) in a range of applications including lighting, TV and backlight board screen, display etc. In comparison with the traditional incandescent and fluorescent light bulbs, LEDs offer long life-space, much higher energy efficiency, high performance cost ratio and above all very fast switching capability. LED based Visible Light Communications (VLC) is an emerging field of optical communications that focuses on the part of the electromagnetic spectrum that humans can see. Depending on the transmission distance, we can divide the whole optical network into two categories, long haul and short haul. Visible light communication can be a promising candidate for short haul applications. In this paper, we outline the configuration of VLC, its unique benefits, and describe the state of the art research contributions consisting of advanced modulation formats including adaptive bit loading OFDM, carrierless amplitude and phase (CAP), pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) and single carrier Nyquist, linear equalization and nonlinear distortion mitigation based on machine learning, quasi-balanced coding and phase-shifted Manchester coding. These enabling technologies can support VLC up to 10Gb/s class free space transmission.

Abstract:Visible-light communications (VLCs) are energy-efficient communication means and a popular alternative to the radio-frequency technology. VLCs are referred to as free-space optical communication systems which can be built upon the existing lighting infrastructure. Due to the cost-effectiveness concern, light emitting diodes (LEDs) are adopted as the visible-light sources. In this paper, we demonstrate a VLC prototype using white LEDs and pulse position modulation (PPM), which is aimed for short-range communications. Based on the acquired VLC signal waveforms, characteristics related to electronic components, LEDs, and photo diodes (PDs) are studied thoroughly. The non-square shape of received pulses is modeled by new template functions involving rising and setting time intervals. A new PPM demodulator is devised thereupon. Meanwhile, the probability density function of noise is derived using the Edgeworth expansion. As all of the aforementioned aspects are taken into account, the VLC quality-of-service (QoS) in terms of package error rate and throughput is studied in this work. Experiments are taken to justify the theoretical QoS metric and evaluate our proposed new PPM demodulator.

Abstract:We demonstrate indoor parallel visible light communication (VLC) achieving 3 Gb/s date rate under distance 5 meters with transmission power 15.9 mW, 189.1 mW and 63.4 mW for red, green and blue LEDs, respectively. The original bandwidths for the adopted LEDs are approximately 10 MHz. A lens is employed at the transmitter side to concentrate the light. Due to the 5-meter distance, different single-color LEDs exhibit separated light spots at the receiver side, which creates parallel transmission paths with negligible inter-color interference. Analogue pre-equalization is adopted to extend the 3-dB bandwidth to approximately 300 MHz, and Volterra series-based digital post-equalizer is adopted to mitigate the nonlinearity and residue inter-symbol interference. In the experiments, on-off keying modulation is adopted due to low reception power at 5-meter distance, and the symbol rate of 1 G per second is adopted for each single-color LED. It is demonstrated that inter-color signal-interference ratio is above 20 dB, and the residue bit error rates of 1.82 × 10 -4 , 1.4 ×10 -3 and 1.3 × 10 -3 are achieved by red, green and blue LEDs, respectively, all below threshold 3.8 × 10 -3 for standard forward error correcting code with 7% redundancy.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish an air-to-water (A2W) visible light communication (VLC) link adopting one green light emitting diode (LED) as the transmitter and one white LED as the ambient light source. The effect of the ambient light on the A2W-VLC link gain is investigated under calm and wavy water surface conditions. By transmitting a high-frequency sinusoid signal, we extract the variation of overall A2W-VLC link gain from the received signal in the presence of ambient light. The experimental results show that the strong ambient light can cause the saturation of photodiode (PD) and yield no communication possibility under calm water surface condition. Under wavy water surface condition, the effect of strong ambient light can be alleviated to some extent, yielding some communication possibilities.

Abstract:A long-distance outdoor communication experiment based on a commercial light-emitting diode (LED) source is carried out. In the experiment, the LED source is modulated by on-off keying(OOK)modulation. The low-density parity-check(LDPC)error-correcting code is used at the receiver. The outdoor light communication experiment with communication distance of 1km is accomplished at clear daytime when the beam of LED is launched with divergence angle of 3° and modulation rate of 23MHz(net data transmission rate is 11. 5Mbit/s), and the bit error rate of 10-6 is achieved. The experimental result shows that the data transmission rate with LDPC (4000, 2000)code is 2. 4times than that without coding when the bit error rate is 10-4. The experimental system is not need to accurate collimation and can overcome the negative environmental consequences such as the wind shaking and the atmospheric turbulence.

Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC) under weak illuminance includes both regular peak light emitting diode (LED) transmission power with low duty cycle and low LED transmission peak power with regular duty cycle. In this work, we address the signal characterization and transmission rate of VLC with low transmission power and regular duty cycle. We first characterize the LED nonlinear effect via a state transition model based on the experimental measurement. Then we adopt hidden Markov model (HMM) to characterize the LED transmission under low peak power. Based on the HMM, we propose a Viterbi detection method to detect the state of signals. Numerical results based on the HMM are presented.

Abstract:The scintillation caused by the atmosphere turbulence and strong background noise from sunlight and other lighting equipment are two main problems in visible light communication (VLC) atmosphere transmission system.In order to overcome the channel fading effect caused by the atmosphere turbulence and the noise interference caused by the strong background light,VLC atmosphere channel with strong background noise is modeled.Diversity receiving technologies are utilized to improve the bit error rate (BER) performance of the system at the same transmitting power.According to the channel model,outdoor long-distance VLC system based on intensity detection pulse position modulation (PPM) in turbulence atmosphere channel using diversity receiving technologies is fimally set up.In our simulation,the system bandwidth is 400 MHz and bit rate is 800 Mb/s.The BER performances of three diversity receiving technologies:maximal ratio combing (MRC),equal gain combing (EGC),selection combing (SC) are also compared.The results show that under the same transmitting power,the improvement of BER performance by MRC is the best,followed by EGC and SC is poor.Taking 7％ forward error correction(FEC) as the BER threshold,the required LED transmitting power is greatly decreased with MRC.Furthermore,with the increase of the number of diversity branches,the BER performance is better.
