Abstract:Visible-light communication (VLC) will be deployed in various indoor environments, including those requiring different lighting colors, which imposes the needs for transmission optimization under certain lighting constraints. This work establishes a framework for the transmission power and rate optimization, for light emitting diode (LED)-based VLC systems. We describe the system model of LED-based color-division VLC system, which incorporates the transmission power spectral, the receiving optical filters, the human eye perception, and the lighting constraints. Then we formulate the corresponding power and rate optimization problems, for both point-to-point communication system and broadcast communication system. More specifically, for a point-to-point communication system, it maximizes the transmission rate subject to the transmission power constraint and the lighting constraint; and for a broadcast system, it minimizes the total transmission power subject to some quality of service (QoS) constraint across all receivers. It is observed that the optimal symbol modulation power allocation scheme significantly outperforms the equal power allocation scheme.

Abstract:White LED has advantages of higher electro-optical conversion efficiency,saving energy,more reliable,longer life,and higher speed modulation,hence it is widely recognized as the next generation of green products for illumination.Indoor visible light communication is a new technology which combines the communication technology with the illumination technology using white LEDs.Such a kind of wireless communications can transmit data from a few meters to tens of meters away,which has notable characteristics of saving energy,safe and large capacity.As a new wireless communication means,it has attracted more and more scholars home and abroad to pay attention to,and has become an important future direction of optical wireless communications.The paper introduces its development home and abroad,and analyzes the key technologies to tackle.Finally it predicts the trends of indoor visible light communication with white LED.

Abstract:Due to limited interference range, the advantage of visible light communication (VLC) over wireless fidelity (WiFi) lies more in the unit-area transmission rate rather than the single-link transmission rate. To characterize the achievable transmission rate per unit area, we consider an indoor downlink VLC network with dense attocell configuration for the transmitters with single-color light-emitting diode (LED) and multi-color LEDs, assuming binomial distributed users. We divide each attocell into central region and boundary region, and propose the transmission protocols based on such attocell division. We optimize the LED half-power angle to maximize the mean achievable transmission rate per unit area. More specifically, we investigate the rates of cell-center and cell-boundary users under fairness consideration for the single LED transmitter system. We characterize the mean achievable transmission rate per unit area under the white light constraints in the multiple LEDs transmitter system. The performance of the proposed transmission protocols is evaluated by numerical results.

Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC), primarily based on light emitting diode (LED), supports the information transmission and networking through the existing infrastructure of the illumination network.The constellation optimization and the power resource optimization were investigated under lighting constraints with multiple LEDs for indoor environment.Moreover, the optical intelligent reflection surface was also researched to regulate reflection channels dynamically, improving both the transmission data rate and the coverage of the VLC system.In the meantime, the preliminary study revealed the flicker effect of low-frequency modulated optical signals on the human body, and the results suggest that the LED photo-biological effect should be considered comprehensively in the future signal design.
Energy Efficiency Optimization Method of WDM Visible Light Communication System for Indoor Broadcasting Networks

Abstract:This paper introduces a novel approach to optimize energy efficiency in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) Visible Light Communication (VLC) systems designed for indoor broadcasting networks. A physics-based LED model is integrated into system energy efficiency optimization, enabling quantitative analysis of the critical issue of VLC energy efficiency: the nonlinear interplay between illumination and communication performance. The optimization jointly incorporates constraints on communication quality of each channel, and illumination performance, standardized by the International Commission on Illumination (CIE). The formulated nonlinear optimization problem is solved by the Sequential Quadratic Programming (SQP) algorithm in an experiment-based simulation. An integrated Red-Green-Blue-Yellow Light Emitting Diode (RGBY-LED) is measured for model calibration and three different scenarios are simulated to evaluate the generality of the proposed method. Results demonstrate a double enhancement in performance and a high versatility in accommodating various scenarios. Furthermore, it highlights the importance of balancing communication and illumination imperatives in VLC systems, challenging conventional perceptions focused solely on minimizing power consumption.

Abstract:We are seeing a growing use of light emitting diodes (LEDs) in a range of applications including lighting, TV and backlight board screen, display etc. In comparison with the traditional incandescent and fluorescent light bulbs, LEDs offer long life-space, much higher energy efficiency, high performance cost ratio and above all very fast switching capability. LED based Visible Light Communications (VLC) is an emerging field of optical communications that focuses on the part of the electromagnetic spectrum that humans can see. Depending on the transmission distance, we can divide the whole optical network into two categories, long haul and short haul. Visible light communication can be a promising candidate for short haul applications. In this paper, we outline the configuration of VLC, its unique benefits, and describe the state of the art research contributions consisting of advanced modulation formats including adaptive bit loading OFDM, carrierless amplitude and phase (CAP), pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) and single carrier Nyquist, linear equalization and nonlinear distortion mitigation based on machine learning, quasi-balanced coding and phase-shifted Manchester coding. These enabling technologies can support VLC up to 10Gb/s class free space transmission.

Abstract:In visible light communication (VLC) systems, white light emitting diodes (LEDs) are used as illumination sources and transmitters simultaneously. Compared to the phosphor-converted LEDs, multi-chip LEDs have higher modulation bandwidth. Consequently, the multi-chip based VLC systems have great potential for high data rate transmission. Since each chip of the multi-chip LEDs can be modulated independently, parallel communication channels are viable for information transmission. In this paper, in order to maximize the multi-user sum-rate for the multi-chip based multi-input single-output VLC systems, an electrical and optical power allocation scheme is proposed in consideration of the luminance, chromaticity, amplitude and bit error rate constraints. From the perspective of human color vision, the chromaticity constraint is defined within a MacAdam ellipse. As a result, the degree of freedom can be achieved by relaxing the chromaticity constraint from a fixed color point to an elliptic region. Numerical results demonstrate that with the increase of the total luminous flux, the maximum sum-rates present an open-down parabolic tendency due to the limited dynamic range of LEDs. Higher data rate can be achieved under higher correlated color temperature (CCT) for the variation of light components. In addition, the simulation results indicate that the shapes of the chromaticity constrained region (either ellipse or quadrangle) have little impact on the multi-user sum-rate at the same CCT.

Abstract:In this paper, the problem of power allocation is investigated for downlink visible light communication (VLC) systems with non-orthogonal multiple access. In the system, both input-dependent shot noise and input-independent Gaussian noise are considered due to the properties of practical VLC channels. We consider two scenarios for the transmitter with a single light emitting diode (LED) and multiple LEDs, respectively. For single-LED scenarios, the problem is posed as a joint optimization problem of alternating current and direct current power control, whose goal is to maximize the minimum signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio (SINR) of all users. Although the original problem is non-convex, a geometric programming based algorithm is proposed to acquire the global optimal solution. For multi-LED scenarios, the transmit and dimming beamforming vectors are jointly optimized to maximize the minimum SINR of all users. A joint optimization algorithm that alternately optimizes transmit and dimming beamforming vectors is proposed. Particularly, the transmit beamforming problem is converted into a second-order cone programming problem through the successive convex approximation method. The dimming beamforming problem is transformed into a feasibility problem utilizing a low-complexity bisection algorithm. Numerical results reveal the superior performance of the proposed algorithm compared with its orthogonal multiple access counterpart and conventional schemes without shot noise.

Abstract:Data transmission with RGB LEDs is attracting significant research interest in VLC (Visible Light Communication). We consider the power optimization under brightness and communication requirements for RGB LEDs, and model the color constraint using the MacAdam ellipse instead of a fixed point in the chromaticity diagram. Then an optimization problem is formulated to determine the transmission power consumption and the corresponding coordinates in the chromaticity diagram. We propose a novel two-step algorithm to solve the optimization problem with lower implementation complexity. Numerical results show that the proposed approach shows the same performance as the optimal solution using a brute-force method, and requires the lower power consumption using MacAdam ellipse instead of merely a fixed point in the chromaticity diagram.

Abstract:Visible light communication based on LEDs has been of great interest in recent years, due to its advantages such as license free, human‐eye comfortability, confidentiality, immunity to electromagnetic interference, etc. To further develop LED visible light communication, researchers need to understand each component of visible light communication systems, including devices, circuits, and modulation technologies. Specifically, to increase the transmission speed and transmission distance of VLC systems, the transmitter, receiver, and communication algorithms of the system play significant roles and should be improved in the correct direction. This article aims to briefly introduce principles, progress, and perspectives of the devices, circuits, and modulation technologies, which help to provide some opinions of development direction for future LED‐based visible light communication.

Abstract:High efficiency LEDs are widely used to replace fluorescent lamps due to outstanding energy efficiency, long operational life and affordable manufacturing cost. LED contains dual fundamental applications, which are lighting illumination and Visible Light Communication (VLC). Although VLC provides several advantages when compared with RF wireless communication, duplex communication of VLC can be problematic. Hybrid visible light communication (HVLC) is proposed to solve the limitation of VLC and fulfil mobile internet requirement which integrates VLC for downlink and Wi-Fi for uplink. Visual effect based on interior design criteria is taken into account when users replace fluorescent lamp with LED. Thus, the project investigates the optimal condition between the lighting requirement and data connectivity. Two case studies are chosen to demonstrate our proposed optimization scheme namely school hall design (square topology) and hotel design (ring topology). A linear optimization scheme is proposed for received power among the mobile users in school hall (square topology) and hotel lobby (ring topology). This technique is addressed for a practical room scenario of dimension 30 m x 30 m x 3 m where 90 users are randomly generated with different positions. Light sources placement also affected the performance of VLC. Based on our simulation, square topology have higher signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) if compared to ring topology.

Abstract:LED replacing fluorescent and incandescent lamps for lighting has become an obvious trend.The feature that LED can be used for both illumination and communications makes visible-light communication(VLC) become a hot point in recent years.With the rapid popularization of computers and smart devices,the bandwidth and coverage of access networks need further improvement.VLC technology is a promising communication technology for high speed data transmission to break through the bottlenecks.A main challenge of this technology is the limited modulation bandwidth of white LED.Researchers have proposed a variety of techniques,such as equalization technology,blue filtering,high-order modulation formats,discrete multi-tone(DMT) modulation,wavelength division multiplexing(WDM) technology,and multiple-input multiple-output(MIMO) technology,to extend bandwidth and increase transmission speed.The principles and performances of those techniques are analyzed and discussed to provide a reference for future researches.

Abstract:With the emergence of high lumen output white lighting LEDs, visible light communication has become an intriguing technology to realize low cost data transmission in conjunction with lighting. In this paper, we discuss some key issues in practical line-of-sight (LOS) visible light communication system design. They include a transmitter, channel model, and receiver front-end. A transmitter containing white LED arrays should be designed to achieve required lighting distribution and reliable data transmission at the same time. A basic LOS channel model to characterize the path loss and received optical power is also needed for optimization of the receiver under major noise sources. Finally we show a practical indoor LOS visible light communication system to demonstrate some of our analyses.

Abstract:Visible light communication in conjunction with solid state lighting has become an emerging area of interest to achieve lighting and wireless communication simultaneously in an indoor environment. It is anticipated to be a low cost supplement to existing wireless communication technologies. Most existing work has primarily focused on a unidirectional downlink using visible light spectra. The appropriate choice of an uplink to achieve bidirectional communication is a big challenge. In this paper, candidate options of the uplink are compared in terms of device performance, light safety, background interference, and path loss. In visible light communication, white light emitting diodes as optical transmitters are also characterized in terms of impulse response and electrical spectrum. A digital preequalization idea to increase their bandwidth is proposed. Performance of the downlink visible light communication system is also experimentally studied in order to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed design.

Abstract:The design of solid-state lighting is vital, as numerous metrics are involved in their exact positioning, and as it is utilized in various processes, ranging from intelligent buildings to the internet of things (IoT). This work aims to determine the power and delay spread from the light source to the receiver plane. The positions of the light source and receiver were used for power estimation. We focus on analog orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) in visible light communication (VLC) and assess the area under the curve (AUC). The proposed system was designed using modulation techniques (i.e., quadrature amplitude modulation; QAM) for visible light communication (VLC) and pulse-width modulation (PWM) for dimming sources. For the positioning and spreading of brightness, the proof-of-concept was weighted equally over the entire area. Therefore, the receiver plane was analyzed, in order to measure the power of each light-emitting diode (LED) in a given area, using the delayed mean square error (MSE). A framework was applied for the placement of LEDs, using full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) parameters with varying distances. Then, the received power was confirmed. The results show that the AUC using DRMS values for LEDs significantly increased (by 30%) when the number of source LEDs was changed from four to three. These results confirm that our system, associated with the simple linear lateration estimator, can achieve better energy consumption.

Abstract:Due to spectrum shortage, visible light communication (VLC) has gradually been regarded as an important alternative and reinforcement in wireless communication field. Micro-light-emitting diodes (micro-LEDs) are ideal high-speed light sources for VLC due to its significantly improved modulation bandwidth. In this review, the developments of high-speed micro-LEDs in VLC are discussed. While expounding the unique advantages of micro-LED, we also point out the existing problems and challenges. On this basis, we review the outstanding achievements in bandwidth improvement, and also look forward to some promising directions for future research.

Abstract:We demonstrate a visible light communication system based on DC-biased optical orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing(DCO-OFDM) and achieve a bit rate of 481 Mb/s at a communication distance of 65 cm by employing single 1 W commercial phosphorescent light-emitting diode(LED). The average bit error rate of the received data is 2.3×10-3, which is below the forward error correction limit, 3.8×10-3. The effect of signal clipping in DCO-OFDM system is studied and resource allocation algorithms are utilized. At least 13% capacity improvement can be obtained by suitable signal clipping and resource allocation.

Abstract:Visible light communication employs low-cost intensity modulation and direct detection, where positive time-domain baseband signals are generated to drive LEDs through addition of a DC bias. However, the non-informative bias in this straightforward and easy-to-implement approach significantly reduces the system energy efficiency. In this article, new energy-efficient modulation schemes leveraging informative DC-bias are introduced. Under some lighting constraints, a convex optimization problem is formulated. Optimal constellations are constructed in either the time domain or frequency domain by compact sphere packing. Several DC-informative system architectures are then discussed. Finally, technical implementation challenges are investigated.

Abstract:The user association problem for light emitting diode (LED)-based visible light communication (VLC) systems is investigated in this paper. Unlike its counterpart in other RF communication systems, the LED-based VLC system has unique lighting constraints which have to be satisfied when making user association decisions. This work establishes a utility maximization framework for VLC user association with lighting constraints. The optimization problem is shown to be non-convex mixed integer, and hence is very difficult to solve. Two sub-optimal solutions are proposed and their performance is analyzed, one based on a greedy heuristic and the other based on a convex relaxation. Simulation results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the solutions.

Abstract:Piggybacking communication by illumination LEDs provides additional valuable functionality to LED lighting fixtures as optical communication transmitters at little cost. However, joint dimming control and high data-rate communication requires proper supporting protocols under the bandwidth limitation of LEDs. This paper applies overlapping pulse position modulation (OPPM) to achieve high capacity communication and flexible dimming. It then analyzes both illumination and communication performance in terms of dimming range, flicker severity index, cutoff data rate, and power and bandwidth efficiencies, all comparing against OOK and variable PPM modulation schemes. The results show the best performance using OPPM, making it an ideal candidate technology for emerging visible light communication.
