Abstract:The economic transition in China since the late 1970s has led to not only drastic social transformations but also rapid advancements in science and technology, as well as the revolution in information and communications technology. In order to enhance the global competence of the Chinese population in coping with the challenges of a knowledge-based economy, the higher education sector has been going through restructuring along the lines of marketization, privatization and decentralization. Responding to the the challenges of globalization, the Chinese government has opened up the education market by allowing overseas universities to offer programmes on the mainland. This article sets out in this wider policy context to examine the current developments of transnational higher education in China, with particular reference to how students in Zhejiang province enrolling in these overseas programmes, especially those offered by Australian providers, evaluate their learning experiences. This article will also discuss the major concerns raised by the respondents in our study regarding the newly emerging transnational higher education programmes, with particular reference to examining how far these new programmes would affect the regulatory framework in Chinese higher education.

Abstract:Along with China's economic and social transformation, professional degree education in China's higher education system is becoming more and more important. MBA is one of professional degree education programs that enjoy the longest history in China. Given the longer development history of American and European MBA education and considering the international experiences they can provide for Chinese practice, this paper focuses on the investigation of the latest development of MBA project in several well-known America and Europe Business School, including interdisciplinary joint-degree program, the cultivation of the consciousness of globalization, and the diversified and personalized training process. Based on these analyses and the interview of MBA educators from home and abroad, we propose a set of policy recommendations on the development of MBA education in China.

Abstract:Distance education has an important role in advancing lifelong learning. In China, there are two types of providers for distance education, open universities (OUs) and Institutes of Distance Education affiliated to regular universities (IDEs). IDEs are increasing because of technology development. This study compared OUs and IDEs in China from three aspects, including development goals, decision making on enrollment, and learning experience. Through corpus analysis and interviews, this study found that although the policy orientation of OUs and IDEs is different, their actual functions are the same. This is a phenomenon of institutional isomorphism, and government plays an important role in this convergence.

Empirical Analysis of Return to Distance Higher Education in Different Disciplines

Abstract:Few empirical studies have analyzed the return to distance higher education in different academic disciplines. This study used quantitative methods, data from a nationwide survey, and Mincerian earnings function to analyze the return to distance higher education among different disciplines in China’s labor market. Results were compared with the return to face-to-face higher education and showed that the returns to face-to-face higher education were higher than those to distance higher education. Returns to the disciplines of economics and management were at a high level in both face-to-face and distance education; returns to the disciplines of literature, as well as education and law, were at a low level in both face-to-face and distance education. The returns to the disciplines of science and engineering were higher in face-to-face education than in distance education. This paper proposes several recommendations. Adults who do not have higher education degrees should invest in distance higher education to obtain considerable monetary returns, particularly in the disciplines with higher returns such as management and economics. China’s distance education institutions should improve the quality of teaching in science and engineering education and find ways to provide high-quality experimental teaching practices. At the same time, they should scale back on instruction of literature, as well as education and law.

Abstract:This paper empirically examine the relationship between the quality of MBA education and firm performance. There are three interesting results from this research. First, it is revealed that those CEOs with MBA had performed no better than their counterpart – those non-MBA predecessors. Second, it is suggested that those CEOs who graduated from those MBA programs running independently had performed significantly worse than their counterpart. Finally, it is indicated that those CEOs who graduated from the programs sponsored by Sino-foreign cooperative model had performed much better than their counterpart. Those results provide useful practical guideline for future MBA education in China.

Abstract:In order to be more competitive in the global marketplace, China has adopted a long-term plan to reform their higher education system. One specific aim of this plan is to facilitate the achievement of China’s goal of building a world-class market-driven economy through the development of an adequate supply of MBA-trained professional managers to lead their organizations. This case study presents an exploratory and descriptive research approach to assess the effects of an instructional delivery scenario in which concrescent conversation was used as a communication tool to create a cooperative learning setting in a mainland Chinese MBA course. The Index of Learning Styles (ILS) model was used to determine the learning style preference of the Chinese students. The study also investigated the relation between a student’s preferred learning style with gender and major (business, engineering, math, and science). Sensing-intuitive was the only ILS subscale with a significant difference across gender and major. Females exhibited a moderate preference for sensing learning while males exhibited a mild preference for sensing learning. Among majors, only business and engineering were significantly different from each other. Business majors tended to prefer the moderate sensing learning style and engineering majors indicated a preference for mild sequential learning style. Contrary to the literature on learning style differences attributed to specific cultural orientation, additional observations and results revealed that the Chinese MBA students accepted the instructional delivery scenario in which concrescent conversation was used to implement a student-centered learning setting.

Abstract:Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to examine the uniqueness of management development in China during 1990 and 2010 as represented by the MBA education, and to explore its successes and challenges in the Chinese transitioning context.Design/methodology/approach - The authors adopted an approach that integrated content analysis of literature, historical data and interviews.Findings - It was found that successful practices such as the National MBA Education Supervisory Committee, the top-down approach by the government, the emphasis on international collaborations and faculty development, national MBA entrance examinations, and other related measures have maintained the MBA education system on its current development course, while challenges from the ever-changing context, the balance between internationalization and localization, curriculum design with the Chinese characteristics will continue to shape the future of MBA education in China.Practical implications - Copying from others for management development in the initial stage may be feasible, but it is the localization that ensures flexibility and sustainability.Originality/value - There has been insufficient systematic assessment of MBA education in China. This paper examined MBA practices and challenges in the past two decades of development and offers policy implications for future program development.

Abstract:Education is seen as an important vehicle to foster relationships with countries in the Asia-Pacific region – particularly with Australia's most important economic partner, China. There are many prior studies that have explored the impact of Learning Management Systems (LMSs) on users, through a variety of research designs. However, the diversity of research designs used means that the nuances and subtleties of the diverse approaches, particularly in the context of Australia and China are unknown. The purpose of this literature review is to compare the research designs employed by empirical studies of LMS usage in Australia and China. This review explores the similarities and differences in research methodologies (quantitative, qualitative or mixed methods), research approaches (confirmatory or exploratory) and data collection methods commonly used in a selection of contemporary studies from both countries. The findings indicate Chinese studies employ quantitative methodologies more than Australian studies; confirmatory research is more prevalent in China than Australia; and that there is a distinct preference for surveys in Chinese studies. This review will assist the developers of future collaborative research projects between China and other countries, to construct study designs that are compatible with the identified research strengths.

Abstract:Career progression is a general concern of professional working mothers in China. The purpose of this paper is to report a qualitative study of Chinese professional working mothers that explored the perceptions of online Master’s of Business Administration (MBA) programmes as a tool for career progression for working mothers balancing work and family in China. The objective was to examine existing work–family and career progression conflicts, the perceived usefulness of online MBA in balancing work–family and career aspirations, and the perceived ease of use of e-learning. Using Davis’s (MIS Q 13(3):319–340 1989) technology acceptance model, the research drew on in-depth interviews with ten female part-time MBA students from a university in Wuhan. The data were analysed through coding and transcribing. The findings showed that conflicts arose where demanding work schedules competed with family obligations, studies, and caring for children and the elderly. Online MBA programmes were viewed as a viable tool for balancing work and family and studying, given its flexible time management capabilities. However, consideration must be given to address students’ motivation issues, lack of networking, lack of face-to-face interaction, and quality. The research findings emphasise the pragmatic need to re-align higher education policy and practice to position higher education e-learning as a trustable education delivery channel in China. By shedding light on the prevailing work–family conflict experienced by women seeking career advancement, this study suggests developing better gender-supporting policies and innovative e-learning practices to champion online MBA programme for this target niche.

Abstract:Along with the rapid growth of technology, education has recently undergone steady change. Before China, of many developed countries started the process of incorporating digital resources and technology into education. The execution of a new education infrastructure program has been given priority by China's Ministry of Education at the moment. Comparatively speaking, the United States has made more advancements in the integration of instructional technology thanks to a comparatively developed sector. Despite being at a higher overall level than China, Japan's development in integrating educational technology is nevertheless lagging behind the U.S. and other quickly emerging nations. Through a study and comparison of the educational advancement in the United States, Japan, and China, this article evaluates the future opportunities and problems of China's education "New Infrastructure" business. The analysis includes market analysis in the post-pandemic era as well as the process of developing educational "New Infrastructure" and the educational environment during the COVID-19 period. Currently, the United States and Japan represent different phases in the integration of global educational technologies.

Abstract:ERIC is the largest and the most prestigious world-class educational database in the educational field.Based on this database,we collected a total of 12402 documents in distance education from 1972 to 2010.Then a series of bibliometric analysis have been done to the collected documents.This study reveals that research in distance education has entered into a stable production stage.There are plenty of literature sources,with journals as the main source.There are varies of publication types,mainly journal articles and research reports.A wide range of topics are concerned,especially the following hot issues——education level,instructional design,teaching methods,technology related to the area and application of technology in distance education.Currently,the study of overseas distance education has reached collegial and postgraduate level,and gradually shifted to traditional education field.Overseas researchers began to focus on educational policy,teacher-student relationship,interaction,blended learning and the application of new technologies in distance education.
An Empirical Study on Distance Education and Job Match

Abstract:Job match has always been the focus of educational research. However, current empirical studies are limited to the analysis of face-to-face education, and there’s no empirical study focusing on the job match of distance education. To fill the gap in this research field, this study analyzes the distance learners in China to demonstrate the relationship between distance education and job match by using the data from a nationwide household survey. The empirical results involve two significant findings. Firstly, distance learners and face-to-face learners have no significant difference in job match. This study attempts to explain this with the human capital theory, that is, distance learners and face-to-face learners have no difference in obtaining their specific human capital, so they both prefer to work on a position characterized by job match. Secondly, job mismatch has no significant negative effect on the income of distance learners. This study attempts to explain this with the screening theory, that is, though distance education would improve the learners’ specific human capital, it still acts as a diploma signal, to some extent, in China, thus making it impossible for the specific human capital obtained by distance learners to transform into a superiority in income.

Abstract:With the rapid development of distance education in China,the economics of distance education have begun to enter into domestic researchers' vision.From the core of economics of education research,learning from some of the international economics of education studies and considering the characteristics of distance education,we explore a research agenda of the economics of distance education in the next decade.We argue that economics of distance education should be strengthened in the following three aspects in the next 10 years in China:(1) external efficiency of distance education,such as distance education's contribution to economic growth,social benefits of distance education and the private benefit and the measures of such returns;(2) the internal efficiency of distance education,such as distance education production,economies of scale and scope,teacher supply and training;(3)How to provide the adequate resources of education production fair and effective is also about education finance researchIn order to develop the studies economics of distance education,we suggest that we should develop the data base of distance education,such as data survey for distance education learners,census data with information and variables of distance education.Only with reliable data,the researchers can obtain reliable results.
Studying Higher Education Internationalization: New Methods and Approaches

Abstract:This research paper studies trends and hotspots of management internationalization in the sphere of higher education. The survey is based on CiteSpace visualization technology and on the corpus approach to studying keywords and annotations for 2010–2021 publications in 25 major higher education journals. Keywords analysis by CiteSpace showed that the hotspots of the management internationalization research are focused on postgraduate education management, on the projects «Double First Class University Plan», «Greater Bay Area», «Cooperation in Running Schools», etc. The future possible areas of investigation are the «local internationalization» of university management, the internationa lization of management in terms of international-level specialties and first-class universities’ nationalization, as well as the contradiction of the «spillover effect» between university management and cross-university cooperation. The corpus-based analysis showed that over the past 12 years the studies of internationalization of higher education and its mana gement have been carried out within the large-scale project «One Belt – One Road» and economic globalization. These studies include the modules of universities’ development, university education, academic research, school management strategy, etc. To effectively address the challenges faced by higher education internationalization management, the aut hors propose to take advantage of consistent teaching quality and to leverage regional and local resources, so as to create a multidimensional platform that would interconnect talents and ways to use them. Of no less importance, when summarizing such experience, is it to take into account the historical background, so that this platform, certainly engaging state policy, would allow a reform of higher education globalization for its further development.

Abstract:Purpose This study aims to fill this research gap by providing a comprehensive exploration of the transnationalization of higher education in China and Asia, with a particular focus on how institutions maintain quality assurance and how student learning experiences are reported. Design/methodology/approach The transnationalization of higher education involves educational programs and services provided by institutions or universities in a country other than their home country where students from diverse countries are trained. The goal of transnational education is to offer higher education to students who face obstacles in physically entering the host country of a transnational program, encourage globalization, enhance cross-cultural communication and improve the quality of education by expanding students' learning opportunities, providing diverse educational experiences and elevating academic standards. The transnationalization of higher education has become a crucial endeavor in Asia, especially in countries such as China, Malaysia and Singapore, where rapid economic development and globalization have prompted the need to evolve into knowledge-driven economies to meet the increasing demand for higher education. The factors driving the expansion of transnational higher education in China and Asia include the desire for top-quality education, the allure of international students, the establishment of worldwide collaborations and aspirations to be recognized as centers of academic distinction. The rapid expansion and increasing importance of transnational higher education has underscored the vital role of quality assurance. To guarantee educational quality, maintain institutional reputation and improve overall student outcomes, several agencies and frameworks have been established to uphold international standards. Findings Based upon extensive literature reveiw and case analysis, our findings indicated the quality assurance assessment varies and is primarily influenced by host countries and provider polices. However, students in transnational higher education programs report satisfaction with their experienes and the quality of their programs, which tends to meet their expecations. Originality/value This study presents the first comprehsensive literatrue rewiew and case analysis of how transnational higher education in China, Sinapore, Malaysia and Vietnam uphold quality assurance and report students learning experiences. Additionally, the findings highlight why future researceh on this topic is crucial and why forestering colloboration among countries in Asian regions is imporant in term of growing geo-politics.

Abstract:The growth of eLearning technologies has blurred the boundaries of educational modes to a point where distance education programs can be offered without drawing particular notice on campus. The experience of distance education staff working in campus‐focused universities and their perceptions of their chances of successfully planning and teaching by distance should inform evaluation of a university’s quality framework. In this case study, we report on the experience of distance educators at an Australian campus‐focused university. We identify organisational structure and culture as critical success factors for quality in distance education, with technology a, perhaps surprisingly, minor consideration. While the eLearning era has opened the door to a distance education cottage industry, eLearning strategy has failed to comprehensively prepare the way for the issues unique to distance education. The paper recommends that campus‐focused universities must protect their reputation by systematically assuring the quality of their (inevitable) distance offerings.
