Abstract:Although the craze for MOOCs is becoming more rationalized, there has been no general consensus on how best we should promote digital learning neither in terms of research nor practices in conventional universities. An international research team headed by George Siemens conducted a systematic research on the evolution of technology-driven education over the last century funded in part by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The research outcomes were published in February 2015 as a report entitled "Preparing for the Digital University: A Review of the History and Current State of Distance, Blended, and Online Learning". Our review first highlights the key issues covered in the report, with mind-map illustrations. These issues include distance education, blended learning, online learning, credentialing, MOOCs and future learning technology infrastructures. Then it moves on to the discussion of the value and implications of this report for reorienting teaching and learning particularly in higher education. Finally, we present a conceptual framework (called uMOOCS), developed by Tsinghua University researchers in line with our research in distance education, online learning and blended learning. It is our hope that such a proposed framework might advance our understanding of what entails in the learning and teaching in a digital age.
