Abstract:We investigate the optical properties of Nd:YAG crystals grown by temperature gradient technology with different Nd doping levels. The Nd concentrations used are 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5 and 3.0 at.%. It is found that the absorption coefficients of Nd:YAG crystals increase with increasing Nd concentrations. The absorption coefficient of 3.0 at.% Nd:YAG is up to 22.1 cm(-1). The laser performance of these Nd:YAG crystals is compared with that of the traditional Nd:YAG (1.1 at.% Nd) grown by the Czochralski (CZ) method. Although concentration quenching exists in highly doped Nd:YAG, 2.0 at.% Nd:YAG shows excellent performance with the slope efficiency of 46.7%, which is higher than that (39%) of 1.1 at.% Nd: YAG grown by the CZ method.

Abstract:We have developed a Nd:YAP single crystal fiber laser with linearly polarised light output at 1.0795 μm. The laser is 100 μm in diameter and operated with a threshold of 6.65 m W. The slope efficiency is 12.9%.

Abstract:The thermal effect of a diode pumped solid-state laser mainly caused by nonuniform thermal distribution is the significant bottleneck limiting the output power achievable. In this work, a novel strategy to synthesize YAG crystal thin rods with a designable axial dopant gradient based on the laser-heated pedestal growth (LHPG) method was developed. To make the pump light uniformly absorbed through the whole rod, the optimal doping concentration profile along the axis of single-crystal rods (SCRs) was theoretically deduced. Finite element simulation results demonstrated that the Nd:YAG crystal thin rods with a designed dopant gradient can significantly reduce heat loads under laser operation. Using the grown gradient doped SCRs as a gain medium, the laser diode pumped continuous-wave laser at ∼1.06 μm was achieved with the highest slope efficiency of 44% and a maximum output power of 6.46 W. Under the same conditions, the slope efficiency of the uniformly doped SCRs was 38.7% and the maximum output power was 4.95 W. The results show that the SCRs with gradient dopants possess better thermal management and superior laser performance. Significantly, this method also provides a new idea for realizing the controllable distribution of doped ions in crystal growth.

Abstract:In order to solve the problem of low segregation coefficient of Nd3+ ions in YAG crystal, Sc3+ ions are used to replace some Al3+ ions in YAG, so that the YAG cell becomes bigger, thereby the segregation coefficient of Nd3+ ion increases. In this paper, the spectra and laser characteristics of Nd:YSAG single crystal are studied. The (1.5 at.%) Nd3+:Y3Sc2Al3O12 (YSAG) laser crystal is grown by Czochralski method, and X-ray rocking curve shows that the crystal quality is good. The concentration of ions in Nd:YSAG is measured by an electronic probe. The segregation coefficient of Nd3+ ion is calculated to be 0.35, which is approximately twice as much as that of Nd3+ in YAG. The absorption and emission spectra are measured, which indicates that it can be pumped by an 808 nm-laser diode (LD). The strongest emission from the transition 4F3/24I11/2 of Nd:YSAG peaks at 1059 nm with an emission cross section of 1.0310-19 cm2, and the lifetime of 4F3/2 is about 253 s, which indicates that Nd:YSAG has roughly an efficiency equal to that of Nd:YAG, but the laser upper level lifetime is longer than that of Nd:YAG, which is more favorable for Q-switched laser operation. The 808 nm-LD is used to pump Nd:YSAG rod of 2 mm2 mm6 mm, the laser operation with a threshold of 0.85 W and a maximum output power of 1.1 W is realized:the laser slope efficiency is 21.1%, and the optical conversion efficiency is 18.3%. All of the above results show that Nd:YSAG single crystal is a good solid state laser material, which is more favorable for Q-switched laser operation.

Abstract:We demonstrate a dual-wavelength laser based on a new laser material-Nd, Gd:YSGG, or Nd:GYSGG for short-for the first time to our knowledge. Besides its attractive properties such as antiradiation, high segregation coefficient, etc., this kind of laser crystal also shows excellent laser performance. For continuous-wave operation, the maximum output power is 10.1 W with the absorbed power of 18.45 W at 808 nm, corresponding to the slope efficiency of nearly 60%. The maximum single pulse energy and peak power reach 277 μJ and 4.6 kW (60 ns) when the absorbed pump power is 11.4 W for acousto-optic Q-switched operation.

Abstract:We demonstrate for the first time a Cr 4+ :YAG passively Q -switched 1066 nm pulse-burst laser under 879 nm direct pump with a novel Nd:Gd 0 . 69 Y 0 . 3 NbO 4 crystal. The output laser characteristics with different pump repetition rates and different Cr 4+ :YAG initial transmission are studied. Without the Cr 4+ :YAG, we obtain a maximum output energy of 2.55 mJ at an absorbed pump energy of 5.79 mJ with the highest 48% slope efficiency. The pulse-burst laser contains a maximum of 7 pulses for a Cr 4+ :YAG initial transmission of 55% and a pump repetition rate of 1 kHz. The single-pulse energy and narrowest pulse width reach 160 μ J and 5.5 ns at 38.2 kHz, with a peak power of 32 kW.

Abstract:The laser crystals of Nd:YAG and Nd:GdYAG with gradual concentration were grown successfully by a Kyropoulos Similar Method. The concentration of boule part of the three grown crystals were 0.17 ∼ 0.38 at% Nd:YAG, 0.95 ∼ 2.86 at% Nd:YAG, and 0.18 ∼ 0.32 at% Nd:GdYAG, respectively. Meanwhile, the absorption coefficients of boule part of the three crystals increased gradually along the growth direction near 808 nm. Three crystal rods with dimensions of Ф 3 × 40 mm were processed from boule part of the grown crystals. The laser performance of the three rods under different transmittance output mirrors and different pump directions were characterized. The optimal laser slope efficiency of 0.17 ∼ 0.38 at% Nd:YAG and 0.18 ∼ 0.32 at% Nd:GdYAG were 52.8% and 55.0%, respectively, when the transmittance of the output mirror was 15%. And the optimal laser slope efficiency of 0.95 ∼ 2.86 at% Nd:YAG was 47.4%, under a 30% transmittance output mirror. Moreover, when the high concentration end is the pump incident end, the laser slope efficiency is reduced. The results show that the laser efficiency can be greatly improved, when pumping along the low concentration end. The gradual concentration crystal is helpful to improve the laser performance.

Abstract:Laser gain media with excellent gradient-doped concentration structure can improve significantly the high-power laser system performance and reduce the crystal temperature gradients, which has attracted the researcher’s attention and experienced rapid development in recent years. In this paper, the principle and design methodology of gradient-doped concentration structure and the laser system performance advantages of different design methods have been reviewed and analyzed emphatically. Finally, the advantages and disadvantages of the gradient-doped crystal concentration structure design methods have been summarized and the outlook is presented.

Abstract:The highly doped Nd:YAG (Nd concentration as high as 3 at.%) crystals were grown by the temperature gradient technology. The spectral properties of these highly doped Nd:YAG crystals were reported and compared with that of the traditional Nd:YAG (1.1 at.% Nd) grown by the Czochralski method. Although concentration quenching exists in highly doped Nd:YAG crystals, the laser performances have demonstrated that highly doped Nd:YAG crystals have the advantages over that of the traditional grown Nd:YAG such as efficiencies, especially used in microchip lasers.

Abstract:The continuous-wave (cw) and passively Q-switched laser performances of mixed Nd:Lu(2)YSc(1.5)Ga(3.5)O(12) (Nd:LuYSGG) crystal at 1.06 μm were reported for the first time. The cw output power reached 4.39 W at the absorbed pump power of 10.34 W with slope efficiency of 48.0%. With a Cr(4+):YAG crystal as both the saturable absorber and output coupler, a passively Q-switched laser was realized with the maximum average output power of 1.43 W and slope efficiency of 21.0%. The shortest pulse width, largest pulse energy, and highest peak power were 4.1 ns, 157.1 μJ, and 38.3 kW, respectively. Compared with Nd:Lu(3)Sc(1.5)Ga(3.5)O(12) (Nd:LuSGG) crystal, the pulse energy and peak power are enhanced over more than two times for Nd:LuYSGG. The results show that Nd:LuYSGG crystal is a promising laser material with large energy storage capacities and suitable for the application of pulsed lasers with shorter pulses and larger energies.

Abstract:A diode-bar side-pumped YAG/Nd:YAG/YAG composite crystal laser is presented. A maximum output power of 18.4 W at 1.064 μm with a slop efficiency of 57% and an optical-optical conversion efficiency of 46% was obtained for a pump power of 40 W. Compared with a side-pumped conventional crystal laser in the same experimental conditions, the side-pumped composite crystal laser improved the optical-to-optical conversion efficiency by 12%. Experimental results indicate that a composite crystal can depress the thermal effects effectively and improve the optical-to-optical conversion efficiency easily in the diode side-pumped lasers. The composite crystal has great potential in high-power diode side-pumped lasers.

Abstract:A new mixed laser crystal Nd:Gd0.69Y0.3NbO4 (Nd:GYNO) with high quality was grown successfully by Czochralski method. Its structure parameters are obtained by the X-ray Rietveld refinement method. The effective segregation coefficient of Nd3+ ions is 0.61 in GYNO host. The maximum absorption cross section at 809 nm and peak emission cross section at 1065.6 nm of Nd: GYNO crystal are 11.6 x 10(-20) and 20.5 x 10(-20) cm(2), respectively. The fluorescence lifetime of F-4(3/2) manifold for Nd3+ in Nd:GYNO crystal is fitted to be 156 mu s. Diode-pumped continuous-wave laser operations at 1.06 mu m with Nd: GYNO crystals cut perpendicular to crystallographic a, b, and c axes (denoted as a-, b-c-cut, respectively) were demonstrated. A maximum output power of 0.98 W was obtained with c-cut crystal, corresponding to an optical-to-optical conversion efficiency of 31.3% and a slope efficiency of 30.4%. All these results imply that the Nd: GYNO crystal has great potential application in low and even moderate lasers. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:We present a high-quality Cr,Nd:YAG crystal with 1.0 at. % Cr3+ and 1.1 at. % Nd3+ grown successfully by the Czochralski method. Spectroscopy results indicate that codoped Cr3+ ions are advantageous for improving pumping efficiency. The maximum average power of 20.24 W operated at 40 Hz and 1.06 mu m is obtained on the Cr, Nd: YAG crystal, with electrical-to-optical and slope efficiencies that correspond to 3.00% and 3.77%. Meanwhile, the maximum average power of only 13.32 W is obtained on the Nd: YAG crystal, with the electrical-to-optical and slope efficiencies of 1.97% and 2.47%, respectively. In addition, the laser beam quality of the Cr, Nd: YAG crystal is comparative with that of the Nd: YAG crystal. Therefore, the Cr, Nd: YAG is a promising laser crystal with higher laser performance and stronger radiation-resistant ability than the Nd: YAG crystal. Abstract:In this work, we have reported the first Nd:YAG single crystal fiber lasers at 1.1 μm spectral region operating in continuous-wave and passively Q-switched modes. A maximum continuous-wave output power of 34.52 W is achieved and the corresponding slope efficiency with respect to pump power is 39.9 %. Using Cr 4+ :YAG as saturable absorber, a maximum average output power of 10.37 W is obtained during passively Q-switched laser operation. The maximum pulse peak power and single pulse energy reach approximately 103.7 kW and 1.1 mJ, respectively. In terms of diode end pumping geometry, these reported results represent the best achievements of 1.1-μm lasers, which indicate that crystal fiber has great potential in improving laser power and energy.

Abstract:The parameters of the laser were selected according to the analyzed results obtained through computation. In order to improve the heat radiation of the crystal, a copper semicylindrical spot lighter was used to contact with the crystal. A high efficiency laser-diode side-pumped Nd, YAG laser was demonstrated experimentally under 100 mJ pumping energy and the repetition rate of 50 Hz. The static output of 39.5 mJ was obtained with the optical conversion of 39.5%. The experimental results were analyzed for various laser parameters.

Abstract:In this paper, an electro-optical cavity-dumped 10 Hz Nd:Y3Al5O12 (Nd:YAG) laser was demonstrated. We designed an optimized high stable concavo-convex cavity according to the thermal-insensitive theory that the cavity could be deep stable and be insensitive to the change of thermal lens of laser crystal when g(1)*g(2) = 1/2. The output pulse width was constant at 6.0+/-0.1 ns. The maximum output energy was 40 mJ. The laser had outstanding stability of output characteristics. The fluctuations of average output energy and divergence angle within 8 cycles were 1.24% and 0.06 mrad, respectively. (C) 2012 by Astro, Ltd.

Abstract:Continuous-wave laser properties of Nd : GYSGG crystal based on the transition from F-4(3/2) to I-4(13/2) are investigated. With different output couplers, single or multiple wavelength lasers operating at 1321, 1336, 1404 and 1424 nm are obtained, which provide new options in these wavelength bands. In the 1.3 mu m region, the maximum output power is 2.5W, corresponding to the conversion efficiency of 18.5%. In the 1.4 mu m region, the maximum output power at 1424 nm is 707mW, corresponding to the conversion efficiency of 6.8%. The output power and conversion efficiency can be improved with better anti-reflection coatings for the laser crystal.

Abstract:A highly efficient diode-laser end-pumped polycrystalline 2% Nd:yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) ceramics laser that is comparable in efficiency with Nd:YAG single crystal laser has been developed. With 883 mW pumping, 465-mW-cw laser output at 1064 nm has been obtained corresponding to an optical-to-optical efficiency of 52.7%. The laser threshold is only 30 mW with R=97% output coupler.

Abstract:A Nd3+-doped Y2.8ScAl4.2O12 (Nd:YSAG) single crystal was grown successfully via the Czochralski technology. The crystal structure and crystalline quality of the as-grown Nd:YSAG crystal were determined by the X-ray powder diffraction and X-ray rocking curve, respectively. By X-ray fluorescence analysis, the effective segregation coefficient of Nd3+ is calculated to be 0.33 in the YSAG crystal. Using the chemical etching method, the dislocation density on the (111)-crystalline face is obtained to be about 3.45 × 102 cm−2. The large absorption cross-section (2.95 × 10−20 cm2) and wide FWHM (9.8 nm) around 808.8 nm imply a high LD pumping efficiency. The high emission cross-section (3.53 × 10−20 cm2) at 1336.3 nm and long fluorescence lifetime of Nd3+ ions (286.20 μs) are beneficial to realize laser output. Thereby, all the results indicate that the Nd:YSAG crystal is a potentially new gain material pumped by a LD for near-infrared laser at 1336.3 nm.

Abstract:Composite Cr4+:YAG --Nd3+:YAG crystal fiber was grown by means of LHPG method. By using a high quality Nd3+:YAG as the seed and a sintered powder rod as the source rod, Cr4+:YAG can be readily grown on a Nd3+:YAG end surface. The grown crystal fiber was processed and laser action was demonstrated. Preliminary results showed that the crystal fiber is well suited to a compact passively Q-switched laser operation. A Q-switched laser output showing a 9 ns pulse duration, a 19 mW average output and a 10 kHz repetition rate was demonstrated.
