Abstract:Perovskite solar cells have gained increasing interest in recent times owing to the rapidly enlarged device efficiency and tunable optoelectronic properties in various applications. In perovskite solar cells, interface engineering plays an important role in determining the final device efficiency and stability. In this study, we adopted TiCl4 treatment to reduce the surface roughness of the metal oxide layer and improve the perovskite film quality to obtain better device performance. After proper TiCl4 treatment, the efficiencies of TiCl4–TiO2- and TiCl4–ZnO-based devices were significantly enhanced up to 16.5% and 17.0%, respectively, compared with those based on pristine TiO2 and ZnO (13.2% and 10.2%, respectively).

Abstract:CsPbX 3 -based (X = I, Br, Cl) inorganic perovskite solar cells (PSCs) prepared by low-temperature process have attracted much attention because of their low cost and excellent thermal stability. However, the high trap state density and serious charge recombination between low-temperature processed TiO 2 film and inorganic perovskite layer interface seriously restrict the performance of all-inorganic PSCs. Here a thin polyethylene oxide (PEO) layer is employed to modify TiO 2 film to passivate traps and promote carrier collection. The impacts of PEO layer on microstructure and photoelectric characteristics of TiO 2 film and related devices are systematically studied. Characterization results suggest that PEO modification can reduce the surface roughness of TiO 2 film, decrease its average surface potential, and passivate trap states. At optimal conditions, the champion efficiency of CsPbI 2 Br PSCs with PEO-modified TiO 2 (PEO-PSCs) has been improved to 11.24% from 9.03% of reference PSCs. Moreover, the hysteresis behavior and charge recombination have been suppressed in PEO-PSCs.

Abstract:In the conventional perovskite solar cells (PSCs) structure, TiO2 is the most commonly used electron transport layer (ETL) as it has good energy-level matching with perovskite layer. However, oxygen vacancy defects will appear when TiO2 is exposed to ultraviolet light for a long time, which would reduce its carrier extraction ability. Here, we report a simple and effective interface engineering method for TiO2 ETL to achieve a highly efficient PSCs. An ultra-thin [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) layer is used to modify the mesoporous TiO2/perovskite layer interface. The PCBM effectively passivates defects on the TiO2 surface, promotes the extraction of electrons, and improves the quality of the perovskite film. Finally, a high efficiency of 16.4% was achieved for the modified device, much higher than 13.5% of the reference devices. After storing for 12 days in an atmosphere with an air humidity of 30 ± 5%, the efficiency of the PSCs maintains more than 60% of its initial level. This strategy is beneficial to enhance the efficiency and working stability of PSCs.

Abstract:The performance of planar perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is very sensitive to the interfaces properties, especially the electron transport layer (ETL)/perovskite interface in the n-i-p structure, which could significantly influence the perovskite film morphology, crystallinity and the charge extraction and collection efficiency. Therefore, interface engineering is crucial for achieving high performance planar PSCs. Here, we reported a simple and effective interface engineering method which employed phenyl-C-61-butyric acid methyl ester (PC61BM) thin film or fullerene (C-60) self-assembled monolayer (SAM) or their combination to modify the titanium dioxide (TiO2)/perovskite interface to obtain high performance PSCs. A comparative study between the effects of different fullerene derivative modifications was taken and indicated that adding proper C-60-SAM into the PC61BM solution could improve the interface contact, increase the charge extraction and collection efficiency more obviously compared to the pristine PC61BM treatment. By combining the modified two-step spin coating method, the best performance device based on C-60-SAM modified TiO2 achieved a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 17.8%, much higher than the control device without the interface treatment (12.9%) and also higher than the PC61BM modified device (16.1%) based on MA(1-y)FA(y)PbI(3-x)Cl(x) perovskite. As a consequence, such interface engineering via C-60-SAM or PC61BM + C-60-SAM combination modification is a promising method for achieving highly efficient PSCs.

Abstract:To promote the performance of perovskite solar cells (PSCs), its theoretical power conversion efficiency (PCE) and high stability, elaborative defect passivation, and interfacial engineering at the molecular level are required to regulate the optoelectric properties and charge transporting process at the perovskite/hole transport layer (HTL) interfaces. Herein, we introduce for the first time a multifunctional dipole polymer poly(2-ethyl-2-oxazoline) (PEOz) between the perovskite and Spiro-OMeTAD HTL in planar n-i-p PSCs, which advances the PSCs toward both high efficiency and excellent stability by stimulating three beneficial effects. First, the ether–oxygen unshared electron pairs in PEOz chemically react with unsaturated Pb2+ on the perovskite surfaces by forming a strong Pb–O bond, which effectively reduces the uncoordinated defects on the perovskite surfaces and enhances the absorption ability of the resulting PSCs. Second, the dipole induced by PEOz at the perovskite/HTL interface can decrease the HOMO and LUMO level of Spiro-OMeTAD and optimize the band alignment between these layers, thereby suppressing the interfacial recombination and accelerating the hole transport/extraction ability in the cell. Third, the hygroscopic PEOz thin film can protect perovskite film from water erosion by absorbing the water molecules before perovskite does. Finally, the PEOz-modified PSC exhibits an optimized PCE of 21.86%, with a high short-circuit current density (Jsc) of 24.88 mA/cm2, a fill factor (FF) of 0.79, and an open-circuit voltage (Voc) of 1.11 V. The unencapsulated devices also deliver excellent operation stability over 300 h in an ambient atmosphere with a humidity of 30~40% and more than 10 h under thermal stress.

Abstract:The film quality of the electron transport layer (ETL) plays an important role in improving the performance of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). In order to reduce the effect of rough fluorine-doped SnO2 (FTO)substrate on the film quality of the TiO2 ETL, multiple cycles of spin-coating were employed to realize optimized TiO2 film and improve the performance of PSCs with rough FTO. The results show that TiO2 ETL was optimized most effectively using two spin-coating cycles, obtaining the best performance of PSCs with rough FTO. The carbon electrode-based PSCs were then demonstrated. Our work discusses the feasibility of low-quality rough FTO for the fabrication of PSCs and photodetectors to reduce costs.
Enhancing performance of inverted polymer solar cells by an effective novel double layer combining MoO3 and PEIE

Abstract:Metal oxide of molybdenum oxide (MoO3) and polyethyleneimine ethoxylated (PEIE) was introduced into polymer solar cells (PSCs) as a double interfacial layer. A high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 3.69% based on poly(3-hexylthiophene) and [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (P3HT:PC61BM) was obtained using a MoO3/PEIE bilayer, which is 19.4% higher than that of the pristine devices (the PCE of pristine devices with PEIE interface layer is 3.09%). Results of the analysis via X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicated that the MoO3/PEIE bilayer has dual functions. The first function is that MoO3 is successfully transformed into MoO2, enhancing charge transporting. The second function is that the combination of molybdenum oxide and PEIE can be effectively form ohmic contact to reduce interface contact resistance. The measurement of electrochemical impedance and conductivity further illustrated that the MoO3/PEIE double interfacial layer effectively reduced interface contact resistance, promoted charge transport, and enhanced electron transport ability, thereby improving the device performance.

Abstract:The unique photovoltaic features of perovskites have encouraged researchers to use them as an active layer for solar cell applications. Recombination issue at electron transport layer (ETL)/perovskite interface is one of the reasons for performance reduction in perovskite solar cells (PSCs) and need to address. Hereof, we developed a simple and cheap method to modify this interface by wetting the mesoporous TiO2 ETL using mixed solvents of γ‐butyrolactone (GBL) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). With optimization of the ratio of GBL and DMSO, our results showed a smoother perovskite layer with fewer pinholes on it. In addition, ETL wetting affected perovskite grain sizes and passivated grain boundaries in it. The mentioned reasons reduced carriers' trap centers in the perovskite film and suppressed charge recombination processes within PSCs. The improved crystalline properties of the modified perovskite layer facilitate electron extraction at ETL/perovskite interface and reduce charge accumulation, which brings a champion efficiency of 18.72% for the treated devices higher than that of 15.21% for the untreated devices. Moreover, due to the boosted hydrophobic property of the modified perovskite film, the stability behavior of the related PSCs was improved remarkably. The improved crystalline properties of the modified perovskite layer facilitate electron extraction at ETL/perovskite interface and reduce charge accumulation, which brings a champion efficiency of 18.72% for the treated devices higher than that of 15.21% for the untreated devices. Abstract:Interface engineering is an effective means to enhance the performance of thin‐film devices, such as perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Herein, a conjugated polyelectrolyte, poly[(9,9‐bis(3′‐((N,N‐dimethyl)‐N‐ethyl‐ammonium)‐propyl)‐2,7‐fluorene)‐alt‐2,7‐(9,9‐dioctylfluorene)]di‐iodide (PFN‐I), is used at the interfaces between the hole transport layer (HTL)/perovskite and perovskite/electron transport layer simultaneously, to enhance the device power conversion efficiency (PCE) and stability. The fabricated PSCs with an inverted planar heterojunction structure show improved open‐circuit voltage (Voc), short‐circuit current density (Jsc), and fill factor, resulting in PCEs up to 20.56%. The devices maintain over 80% of their initial PCEs after 800 h of exposure to a relative humidity 35–55% at room temperature. All of these improvements are attributed to the functional PFN‐I layers as they provide favorable interface contact and defect reduction.
Toward Efficient and Stable Perovskite Solar Cells by 2D Interface Energy Band Alignment

Abstract:Interfacial engineering is essential for facilitating carrier separation, charge extraction, and enhancing the stability in organic–inorganic perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Herein, a facile and effective method is demonstrated not only to tune the electronic performance of electron transporting layer (ETL) but also to passivate the defects at the interface between the ETL and perovskite. On the top of the tin(IV) oxide (SnO2) ETL, butylammonium chloride (BACl) and lead(II) iodide (PbI2) are introduced as interface to modify the ETL/perovskite interface. The PSCs with interface modified exhibit a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 21.15%, compared to 18.33% for the device without interface modified. Such enhancement in efficiency is mainly attributed to a better energy band alignment, and the quality of perovskite films is improved through the interface modification, thus enhancing photogenerated charge extraction and leading to low charge carrier recombination at the interface of ETL/perovskite. Furthermore, the device with interface modified exhibits significant stability. This work provides an alternative strategy on the ETL/perovskite interface to obtain highly stable and efficient PSCs.

Abstract:The rapid rise of power conversion efficiency (PCE) of low cost organometal halide perovskite solar cells suggests that these cells are a promising alternative to conventional photovoltaic technology. However, anomalous hysteresis and unsatisfactory stability hinder the industrialization of perovskite solar cells. Interface engineering is of importance for the fabrication of highly stable and hysteresis free perovskite solar cells. Here we report that a surface modification of the widely used TiO2 compact layer can give insight into interface interaction in perovskite solar cells. A highest PCE of 18.5% is obtained using anatase TiO2, but the device is not stable and degrades rapidly. With an amorphous TiO2 compact layer, the devices show a prolonged lifetime but a lower PCE and more pronounced hysteresis. To achieve a high PCE and long lifetime simultaneously, an insulating polymer interface layer is deposited on top of TiO2. Three polymers, each with a different functional group (hydroxyl, amino, or aromatic group), are investigated to further understand the relation of interface structure and device PCE as well as stability. We show that it is necessary to consider not only the band alignment at the interface, but also interface chemical interactions between the thin interface layer and the perovskite film. The hydroxyl and amino groups interact with CH3NH3PbI3 leading to poor PCEs. In contrast, deposition of a thin layer of polymer consisting of an aromatic group to prevent the direct contact of TiO2 and CH3NH3PbI3 can significantly enhance the device stability, while the same time maintaining a high PCE. The fact that a polymer interface layer on top of TiO2 can enhance device stability, strongly suggests that the interface interaction between TiO2 and CH3NH3PbI3 plays a crucial role. Our work highlights the importance of interface structure and paves the way for further optimization of PCEs and stability of perovskite solar cells.

Abstract:SnO 2 as an electron transport layer (ETL) has recently been used for perovskite solar cells (PSCs) due to high transmittance and electron mobility. However, the mismatched band energy alignment of ETL and perovskite layer result in serious nonradiative recombination limiting the improvement of PSCs performance. Here, 2-(Diphenylphosphino)ethanaminium tetrafluoroborate (DPEBF 4 ) as buried interface was introduced between ETL and perovskite. The [BF 4 ] − anion in DPEBF 4 can interact with SnO 2 to reduce the surface defect of SnO 2 . While [DPE] + cation is more inclined to interact with Pb 2+ and I − , the terminal strong interaction will promote crystallization of perovskite film quality and passivate buried surface defects. As a result, device performance was significantly improved by introducing DPEBF 4 layer, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) increase from 20.50 % for control devices to 23.84 %. The work provides an interfacial double-tonic strategy for ETL and perovskite crystals to achieve high-performance perovskite photovoltaic devices.

Abstract:Interface engineering has been proved to be a practical strategy to enhance power conversion efficiency (PCE) and stability of perovskite solar cells. Recently approaches involving ultra-thin layer deposition and vacuum-processing, while improving PCE, increase the processing complexity, and thus an overall cost. In this talk, we demonstrate a high-efficiency inverted planar perovskite solar cell, obtained with a simple wet-chemistry based, room-temperature, and cost-effective processing, which involved two interface layers: molybdenum oxide (MoOx) for anode and titanium (IV) oxide bis (2,4-pentanedionate) (TOPD) for cathode layer. The resulted best cell with a FF as high as 80.7% and a remarkable improvement PCE of ∼16%, which exceeds the PCE of a device without the interface layers (−11.2%).

Abstract:The interface of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) determines their power conversion efficiency (PCE). Here, the buried bottom surface of a perovskite film is efficiently passivated by using MoS2 quantum dots. The perovskite films prepared on top of MoS2-assisted substrates show enhanced crystallinity, as evidenced by improved photoluminescence and a prolonged emission lifetime. MoS2 quantum dots with a large bandgap of 2.68 eV not only facilitate hole collection but also prevent the photogenerated electrons from flowing to the hole transport layer. Overall promotion leads to decreased trap density and an enhanced built-in electric field, thus increasing the device PCE from 17.87% to 19.95%.

Abstract:In triple cation perovskite solar cells (PSCs), polymer hole transport layers (HTLs) based cells usually obtained lower power conversion efficiency (PCE) than 2,2′,7,7′-tetrakis (N, N-di- p -methoxyphenylamine)− 9,9′-spirobifluorene (spiro-OMeTAD) HTLs based cells. In this work, perylene with excellent stability was used to modify the interface between perovskite and HTLs of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT). Our study proved that the insertion of perylene smoothed surface morphology of perovskite, decreased the trap density, assisted the charge extraction, and polished the interfacial contact. Improved photovoltaic performance and prolonged long-term stability were observed in perylene based cells. A champion PCE of 15.87 % was obtained in Perylene(3000) based cell, which was > 14 % higher than the PCE of 13.71 % obtained in reference cell. Meanwhile, the PSCs with perylene displayed better reproducibility than the reference cell. This study showed the potential of perylene like materials in efficient and stabile PSCs.

Abstract:The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is seriously affected by the conductivity and energy alignment of the electron transport layer (ETL). However, poor film quality leads to low conductivity and interface energy level mismatch, which limits the performance of PSCs. Herein, a simple room-temperature (<35 °C) method is used to produce high-quality amorphous TiO 2 thin films by vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) light (172 nm), to form composite ETLs with SnO 2 for PSCs. The introduction of TiO 2 produced perovskite films with larger grains and low trap density. The experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) analysis show that the composite ETL structure improves the electron mobility and conductivity, and the interaction with SnO 2 accelerates the electron extraction due to favorable energy level alignment with the perovskite layer. Eventually, the composite ETL-based PSCs obtain a champion PCE of 24.59% (certified efficiency of 24.24%) and retain 92.4% of their initial PCE after 500 h of continuous light exposure.

Abstract:Electron transport layer (ETL) is pivotal to charge carrier transport for PSCs to reach the Shockley–Queisser limit. This study provides a fundamental understanding of heterojunction electron transport layers (ETLs) at the atomic level for stable and efficient perovskite solar cells (PSCs). The bilayer structure of an ETL composed of SnO2 on TiO2 was examined, revealing a critical factor limiting its potential to obtain efficient performance. Alteration of oxygen vacancies in the TiO2 underlayer via an annealing process is found to induce manipulated band offsets at the interface between the TiO2 and SnO2 layers. In‐depth electronic investigations of the bilayer structure elucidate the importance of the electronic properties at the interface between the TiO2 and SnO2 layers. The apparent correlation in hysteresis phenomena, including current density–voltage (J–V) curves, appears as a function of the type of band alignment. Density functional theory calculations reveal the intimate relationship between oxygen vacancies, deep trap states, and charge transport efficiency at the interface between the TiO2 and SnO2 layers. The formation of cascade band alignment via control over the TiO2 underlayer enhances device performance and suppresses hysteresis. Optimal performance exhibits a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 23.45% with an open‐circuit voltage (Voc) of 1.184 V, showing better device stability under maximum power point tracking compared with a staggered bilayer under one‐sun continuous illumination. This study demonstrates a simple and effective atomic reconstruction for an efficient TiO2/SnO2 heterojunction bilayer for the electron transport layer used in a perovskite solar cell. The fundamental understanding of this work may leverage the potential of heterojunction ETLs and further investigation in materials science, particularly for the development of an efficient charge transport layer in metal halide perovskite photovoltaics.
