Abstract:Perovskite crystallization and morphology are two essential factors to the photoelectric performances of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). A 3D metal-organic assembly [In-2(phen)(3)Cl-6]CH(3)CN2H(2)O (In2) is introduced for the first time into lead iodide precursor to modify the quality of a perovskite thin film through a two-step sequential deposition method. As a result, both the lead iodide and perovskite exhibit improved crystallization and modified morphology. The optimized film presents less trap states and is thus in favor of the charge transfer as well as charge collection. Consequently, open circuit voltage (V-oc) and fill factor obviously show enhancements from 0.99 to 1.04V and from 0.66 to 0.71, respectively, yielding a significant increase in a power conversion efficiency from 15.41% to 17.15%. Meanwhile, the hydrophobic property of In2 can increase the moisture resistance of the perovskite, which offers a simple and effective method to improve the stability of PSCs.

Abstract:Hole-transport-layer (HTL)-free, carbon-based all-inorganic perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are attracting a great interest owing to a low cost and an advanced stability in ambient environment. However, the photoelectric conversion efficiency (PCE) for this kind of PSCs was far lower than expected. Interface engineering is a promising method to enhance PSCs efficiency through improving the interface charge transfer. In our work, we introduce a simple, clean interfacial engineering method of deionized water (DI) spin-coating to treat the F-doped SnO2 (FTO). And then ZnO was spin-coated on the treated FTO. A compact and highly uniform ZnO film was obtained. Excess CsBr was added into CsPbI3 precursor solution to obtain stable black phase CsPbI3 at a low temperature (120 °C). HTL-free, carbon-based all-inorganic CsPbI3−xBrx (x < 1) perovskite solar cells are fabricated with the structure of FTO/DI/ZnO/CsPbI3−xBrx (x < 1)/C. After DI treatment, the defect density of device is greatly decreased so that carriers transport at the interface is accelerated and the charge recombination is effectively suppressed. The champion PCE has been improved from 10.95 to 12.39%, obtaining an improved PCE about 13%, which is the highest PCE for HTL-free, carbon-based all-inorganic PSCs until now.
Deciphering the Morphology Change and Performance Enhancement for Perovskite Solar Cells Induced by Surface Modification

Abstract:A pure 2D perovskite and a 2D/3D perovskite mixture are formed on the MAPbI3 film after surface treatments. This bilayer structure gives rise to a reduced trap density and an improved energy level alignment between the perovskite and HTL. Via simulation, these two positive effects are verified to be the cause of Voc and fill factor (FF) improvement, respectively. Organic–inorganic perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have achieved great attention due to their expressive power conversion efficiency (PCE) up to 25.7%. To improve the photovoltaic performance of PSCs, interface engineering between the perovskite and hole transport layer (HTL) is a widely used strategy. Following this concept, benzyl trimethyl ammonium chlorides (BTACls) are used to modify the wet chemical processed perovskite film in this work. The BTACl‐induced low dimensional perovskite is found to have a bilayer structure, which efficiently decreases the trap density and improves the energy level alignment at the perovskite/HTL interface. As a result, the BTACl‐modified PSCs show an improved PCE compared to the control devices. From device modeling, the reduced charge carrier recombination and promoted charge carrier transfer at the perovskite/HTL interface are the cause of the open‐circuit (Voc) and fill factor (FF) improvement, respectively. This study gives a deep understanding for surface modification of perovskite films from a perspective of the morphology and the function of enhancing photovoltaic performance.

Abstract:Unlike the widely studied upper interface [interface between the hole transport layer and perovskite in n–i–p perovskite solar cells (PSCs)] which only transports carriers, the substrate interface (interface between the electron transport layer and the transparent conductive substrate) transports charge carriers and photons simultaneously. Therefore, managing this interface is crucial for manufacturing high-efficiency PSCs, while it remained largely unexplored previously. Herein, we constructed micro-/nano-antireflection structures and decreased the photon transmission distance to reduce photon loss through substrate interface engineering. In addition, energy level alignment was found to be more matched at the substrate interface to improve the carrier extraction after substrate treatment. Consequently, this tailored substrate interface enabled significantly improved photovoltaic performance of PSCs with a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of up to 24.47%, due to the dramatically enhanced short-circuit current density (J SC) from 24.95 to 25.79 mA·cm–2 and fill factor (FF) from 81.59 to 83.22%. This work profoundly uncovered vital scientific importance hidden in the substrate interface for affecting the J SC and FF, opening up research insight for designing enhanced light management and interface electron transport through substrate interface engineering for higher efficiency metal halide perovskite photovoltaics.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells have gained increasing interest in recent times owing to the rapidly enlarged device efficiency and tunable optoelectronic properties in various applications. In perovskite solar cells, interface engineering plays an important role in determining the final device efficiency and stability. In this study, we adopted TiCl4 treatment to reduce the surface roughness of the metal oxide layer and improve the perovskite film quality to obtain better device performance. After proper TiCl4 treatment, the efficiencies of TiCl4–TiO2- and TiCl4–ZnO-based devices were significantly enhanced up to 16.5% and 17.0%, respectively, compared with those based on pristine TiO2 and ZnO (13.2% and 10.2%, respectively).

Abstract:Organic–inorganic halide perovskite has received extensive attention as a light harvester for next‐generation low‐cost and high‐performance photovoltaics. Its superior optoelectronic properties are attractive among most thin film absorber materials, such as an extremely high absorption coefficient, optimal band gap, ambipolar carrier transport property, and high defects tolerance. However, it requires suitable electrodes and carrier transport materials to fulfill efficient photovoltaic process within an entire device. Thus, the interfaces along the device play a crucial role in determining device photovoltaic performance. Here, the progress of understanding interfaces in perovskite photovoltaics is reviewed from the perspective of processing chemistry and photophysics of carriers, which are the key parameters for the corresponding device photovoltaic behavior. This study is mainly focused on the relevant working mechanism, interface design fundamentals, and the resulting carrier dynamic control over the entire architecture. The study of the interfaces with appropriate materials design provides a fundamental understanding of the photocarrier behavior, including separation, transportation, and collection. The accumulative efforts will contribute to the construction of high‐efficiency perovskite‐based single junction and multijunction photovoltaic devices. It also affects other properties of perovskite solar cells, including J–V hysteresis phenomenon, and long‐term stability. Suggestions with respect to required improvements and future research directions are provided based on the current field of available literature.

Abstract:SnO 2 as an electron transport layer (ETL) has recently been used for perovskite solar cells (PSCs) due to high transmittance and electron mobility. However, the mismatched band energy alignment of ETL and perovskite layer result in serious nonradiative recombination limiting the improvement of PSCs performance. Here, 2-(Diphenylphosphino)ethanaminium tetrafluoroborate (DPEBF 4 ) as buried interface was introduced between ETL and perovskite. The [BF 4 ] − anion in DPEBF 4 can interact with SnO 2 to reduce the surface defect of SnO 2 . While [DPE] + cation is more inclined to interact with Pb 2+ and I − , the terminal strong interaction will promote crystallization of perovskite film quality and passivate buried surface defects. As a result, device performance was significantly improved by introducing DPEBF 4 layer, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) increase from 20.50 % for control devices to 23.84 %. The work provides an interfacial double-tonic strategy for ETL and perovskite crystals to achieve high-performance perovskite photovoltaic devices.

Abstract:Planar-structured metal halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have received considerable attention thanks to their superior optoelectronic properties with a record power conversion efficiency (PCE) over 25%. However, further improvements in PCE of these devices are still limited fundamentally by excessive charge carrier recombination, due to the prevailing defects in perovskite and its' adjacent interfaces to the charge transport layer (CTL). Herein, we report an efficient dual-interface modification strategy to improve the charge carrier management in both perovskite and perovskite/CTL interface by post-treatment perovskite surface with GABr and introducing NH4F-treated SnO2 as an electron transport layer, respectively. Accordingly, the suppressed structural defects, improved crystallinity of the perovskite, and reduced interfacial defects have been achieved simultaneously, thus facilitating the carrier transport and extraction. As a result, the target PSCs attain a decent PCE of 19.61% with a remarkably enhanced fill factor of 78.34%. Moreover, the underlying mechanism concerning on these improvements have been proposed. The present findings might provide some meaningful insights on exploring high-performance PSCs toward theoretically limited efficiency.

Abstract:In the conventional perovskite solar cells (PSCs) structure, TiO2 is the most commonly used electron transport layer (ETL) as it has good energy-level matching with perovskite layer. However, oxygen vacancy defects will appear when TiO2 is exposed to ultraviolet light for a long time, which would reduce its carrier extraction ability. Here, we report a simple and effective interface engineering method for TiO2 ETL to achieve a highly efficient PSCs. An ultra-thin [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) layer is used to modify the mesoporous TiO2/perovskite layer interface. The PCBM effectively passivates defects on the TiO2 surface, promotes the extraction of electrons, and improves the quality of the perovskite film. Finally, a high efficiency of 16.4% was achieved for the modified device, much higher than 13.5% of the reference devices. After storing for 12 days in an atmosphere with an air humidity of 30 ± 5%, the efficiency of the PSCs maintains more than 60% of its initial level. This strategy is beneficial to enhance the efficiency and working stability of PSCs.

Abstract:The energy loss (Eloss) caused by inefficient charge transfer and large energy level offset at the buried interface is extremely easy to restrict the performance of p-i-n perovskite solar cells (PVSCs). In this study, the utilization of Poly-TPD and P3CT-N as a dual-hole transporting layer (HTL) was implemented in a sequential manner. This approach aimed to improve the charge transfer efficiency of the HTL and mitigate charge recombination at the interface between the HTL and PVK. The results show that this strategy also could achieve more suitable energy levels, improve the quality of the perovskite film layer, and ultimately enhance the device's stability. The IPVSCs employing the dual-HTLs approach exhibited the highest power conversion efficiency of 19.85%, and the open-circuit voltage increased to 1.09 V from 1.00 V. This research offers a straightforward and efficient approach to boost device performance by minimizing Eloss and reducing buried interfacial defects. The findings underscore the potential of employing a dual-HTLs strategy as a promising pathway for further advancements in PVSCs.

Abstract:The film quality of the electron transport layer (ETL) plays an important role in improving the performance of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). In order to reduce the effect of rough fluorine-doped SnO2 (FTO)substrate on the film quality of the TiO2 ETL, multiple cycles of spin-coating were employed to realize optimized TiO2 film and improve the performance of PSCs with rough FTO. The results show that TiO2 ETL was optimized most effectively using two spin-coating cycles, obtaining the best performance of PSCs with rough FTO. The carbon electrode-based PSCs were then demonstrated. Our work discusses the feasibility of low-quality rough FTO for the fabrication of PSCs and photodetectors to reduce costs.
Improving efficiency of polymer hole transport layer based perovskite solar cells via interfacial modification

Abstract:In triple cation perovskite solar cells (PSCs), polymer hole transport layers (HTLs) based cells usually obtained lower power conversion efficiency (PCE) than 2,2′,7,7′-tetrakis (N, N-di- p -methoxyphenylamine)− 9,9′-spirobifluorene (spiro-OMeTAD) HTLs based cells. In this work, perylene with excellent stability was used to modify the interface between perovskite and HTLs of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT). Our study proved that the insertion of perylene smoothed surface morphology of perovskite, decreased the trap density, assisted the charge extraction, and polished the interfacial contact. Improved photovoltaic performance and prolonged long-term stability were observed in perylene based cells. A champion PCE of 15.87 % was obtained in Perylene(3000) based cell, which was > 14 % higher than the PCE of 13.71 % obtained in reference cell. Meanwhile, the PSCs with perylene displayed better reproducibility than the reference cell. This study showed the potential of perylene like materials in efficient and stabile PSCs.

Abstract:In the past decade, perovskite solar cell (PSC) photoelectric conversion efficiency has advanced significantly, and tin dioxide (SnO2) has been extensively used as the electron transport layer (ETL). Due to its high electron mobility, strong chemical stability, energy level matching with perovskite, and easy low-temperature fabrication, SnO2 is one of the most effective ETL materials. However, the SnO2 material as an ETL has its limitations. For example, SnO2 films prepared by low-temperature spin-coating contain a large number of oxygen vacancies, resulting in energy loss and high open-circuit voltage (VOC) loss. In addition, the crystal quality of perovskites is closely related to the substrate, and the disordered crystal orientation will lead to ion migration, resulting in a large number of uncoordinated Pb2+ defects. Therefore, interface optimization is essential to improve the efficiency and stability of the PSC. In this work, 2-(5-chloro-2-benzotriazolyl)-6-tert-butyl-p-cresol (CBTBC) was introduced for ETL modification. On the one hand, the hydroxyl group of CBTBC forms a Lewis mixture with the Sn atom, which reduces the oxygen vacancy defect and prevents nonradiative recombination. On the other hand, the SnO2/CBTBC interface can effectively improve the crystal orientation of perovskite by influencing the crystallization kinetics of perovskite, and the nitrogen element in CBTBC can effectively passivate the uncoordinated Pb2+ defects at the SnO2/perovskite interface. Finally, the prevailing PCE of PSC (1.68 eV) modified by CBTBC was 20.34% (VOC = 1.214 V, JSC = 20.49 mA/cm2, FF = 82.49%).
Engineering the buried interface in perovskite solar cells via lattice-matched electron transport layer

Abstract:Modifying the exposed upper surface of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) has greatly contributed to improving their photovoltaic performance. The equally important buried interface (that is, the hidden bottom of perovskite film and the beginning of perovskite film crystallization) is much less studied due to great difficulties in tailoring it. Here we expose the large-area buried interface non-destructively for direct investigation. We find that the disordered beginning of the perovskite film growth deteriorates the buried interface. To address this issue, instead of using a passivator, we synthesize a transparent and conductive oxide perovskite (SrSnO 3 ) to act as the electron transport layer. The high lattice matching enables a more ordered beginning of the growth of halide perovskite on the electron transport layer, avoiding the formation of a deteriorated buried interface. The constructed buried interface exhibits suppressed defects, strain, better crystallinity, reduced ion migration and fewer voids. The best performing PSCs deliver a power conversion efficiency of 25.17%. Moreover, PSCs with an initial power conversion efficiency of 24.4% maintain 90% of the original value after operating for 1,000 h.

Abstract:Interfacial engineering is essential for facilitating carrier separation, charge extraction, and enhancing the stability in organic–inorganic perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Herein, a facile and effective method is demonstrated not only to tune the electronic performance of electron transporting layer (ETL) but also to passivate the defects at the interface between the ETL and perovskite. On the top of the tin(IV) oxide (SnO2) ETL, butylammonium chloride (BACl) and lead(II) iodide (PbI2) are introduced as interface to modify the ETL/perovskite interface. The PSCs with interface modified exhibit a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 21.15%, compared to 18.33% for the device without interface modified. Such enhancement in efficiency is mainly attributed to a better energy band alignment, and the quality of perovskite films is improved through the interface modification, thus enhancing photogenerated charge extraction and leading to low charge carrier recombination at the interface of ETL/perovskite. Furthermore, the device with interface modified exhibits significant stability. This work provides an alternative strategy on the ETL/perovskite interface to obtain highly stable and efficient PSCs.

Abstract:Dopant-free poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) hole transport materials (HTMs) have been acknowledged for their significant potential in enhancing the stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, the severe recombination loss occurring at perovskite/P3HT interfaces exhibits a tremendous impediment to their photovoltaic efficiency. Herein, we develop a general molecular engineering strategy using tailorable phosphine ligands to modulate the perovskite/P3HT interface for effectively alleviating the recombination loss and maximizing the device voltage. Theoretical and experimental results reveal that the phosphine ligand with balanced electronic and steric properties could establish a strong binding interaction with perovskite, which not only passivates deep-level antisite defects for suppressing energy loss but also optimizes the energy level alignment to facilitate carrier transfer. This approach is applicable to the perovskites with various bandgaps, such as 1.53 eV (CsFAPbI3), 1.7 eV (CsPbI3), and 1.9 eV (CsPbI2Br), delivering top-tier efficiencies of 25.08% (certified 24.54%), 21.42%, and 18.39%, respectively. Benefiting from the improved interface and dopant-free HTMs, these PSCs exhibit outstanding stability under accelerated aging conditions.

Abstract:The power conversion efficiency of thin film solar cells using organic–inorganic hybrid lead halide perovskite as an absorber has achieved over 25%. An augment of the output voltage can further increase the efficiency approaching the Shockley–Queisser efficiency limitation, which is highly correlated with charge carrier management at interfaces in perovskite devices. This perspective presents some considerations to improve carrier transfer and reduce recombination loss for highly efficient perovskite solar cells, including primary requests on charge carrier transfer dynamics, reasonable design methodologies of interfacial materials, and tuning interface interaction between perovskite and charge transport layers.

Abstract:In perovskite solar cells (PSCs), rapid charge transfer at the interfaces between photoactive layer and charge transport layers is very important. Various defects and energy barriers at the interfaces will lead to non-radiative recombination of charge carriers in the charge transfer process, which is not conducive to charge collection and eventually hinder the improvement of power conversion efficiency (PCE) and stability of PSCs. Herein, we report a dual interface modification strategy by using different phosphonic acid molecules to modify the interface between SnO 2 layer and perovskite layer and the interface between perovskite layer and hole transport layer, respectively. Acidic diphenylphosphinate chloride (DPC) with UV resistance is employed to modify SnO 2 surface before depositing perovskite layer to alleviate the corrosion of OH − in SnO 2 to perovskite film and regulate the crystal growth process of perovskite. Methyldiphenylphosphine oxide (MPO) that can coordinate with Pb 2+ is used to post-treat the surface of perovskite film to passivate defects at the film surface and grain boundary. The effects of organic interface modifiers on charge transport and charge recombination are comprehensively studied by photoluminescence spectra and electrical measurement. The optimal FA 0.85 Cs 0.15 PbI 3 device with active area of 0.255 cm 2 obtained a PCE of 23.37 %. In addition, the device with working area of 1 cm 2 achieved the best PCEs of 20.29 %. More interestingly, owing to the strong ultraviolet light absorption ability of DPC, the final device with the dual interface modification can still maintain 91.4 % of the initial efficiency after 1000 h in air and 87.8 % when placed in AM1.5G light for 500 h.
