Abstract:Metal-organic framework (MOF)/polymer composites combining advantages of both materials have received significant attention in the recent years. However, the complexity and inefficiency of the current fabrication approaches have hindered their further development. Herein, we demonstrate a facile one-pot solvent crystal template strategy to efficiently fabricate ZIF-8/polyurethane (PU) composites. This method eliminated the pre-synthesis and purification of MOFs, thus greatly simplifying the fabrication process. Moreover, the solvent crystal template introduced macropores in the polymer matrix, which generated a hierarchically porous structure to facilitate the molecular diffusion in the composite. The obtained ZIF-8/PU composites exhibited an accelerated dye adsorption rate constant of 1.89 x 10(-3) g mg(-1) min(-1), which was 2.6 times higher than that of MOF powders. The Langmuir isotherm study further confirmed favorable adsorption of dye molecules with a maximum adsorption capacity of 18.1 mg g(-1).

Abstract:Self-assembled nanofibers with different morphologies were successfully fabricated using amphiphilic low-molecular-weight (LMW) azopyridinium compounds having hydrophobic substituents on benzene groups. The possible driving force and self-assembly principles in nanofiber formation processes were proposed based on measurements of X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-vis absorption spectra and polarizing optical microscopy (POM). The complicated stackings between azopyridinium salts which were constructed by three aromatic units in azopyridinium molecules, i.e. the stackings between benzene groups (Bz-Bz), pyridine groups (Py-Py) and those of benzene with pyridine groups (Bz-Py), mainly acted as the driving force for formation of LMW-AzPy nanofibers. The changed steric hindrance and hydrophobic properties of substituents on benzene groups resulted in the two aggregation types, head-tail and head-head-tail-tail, of LMW-AzPy molecules. In these cases, the head and tail are hydrophilic and hydrophobic parts of LMW-AzPys molecules, respectively. The analyses and understanding of the driving force and aggregation types of LMW-AzPy nanofibers provides references for fabrication of supramolecularly self-assembled nanofibers with controllable behaviours.

Abstract:Nano/micro fibers doped with metal nanocrystals are of great interest both theorectically and practically. Nevertheless, the ordered assembly of metal nanocrystals with desired patterns in nano/micro fibers still remains a big challenge, which constrains the further development of the performance of the material. In this investigation, we propose a facile strategy based on the sol-gel and coaxial electrospinning technique to fabricate silica submicron fibers incorporating ordered 1D array of silver nanoparticles. The silver nanoparticles align strictly in a head-to-tail manner in silica fibers, and their size, shape and population are conveniently controlled through tailoring the properties of the precursor solutions and the electrospinning parameters. Therefore, the plasmon property of the obtained fibers is tuned with great freedom. The fabrication method applied here holds great potential for low-cost preparation of metal/glass composite fibers for nano/micro optical applications in general.
In Situ Synthesis of Self-Assembly Supramolecular Crystal Seeds within Continuous Carbon Nanofibers for Improved Fiber Graphitic Structure

Abstract:The utilization of carbon-based fibers as a fundamental constituent holds strong appeal for diverse materials and devices. However, the poor fiber graphitic structure resulting from the heat treatment of atactic polyacrylonitrile (PAN) precursors often leads to a modest performance of carbon-based fibers. This paper takes electrospun carbon nanofibers (CNFs) as the research object and provides a seed-assisted graphitization strategy to improve the fiber graphitic structures. The typical melamine/cyanuric acid self-assembly precursor of graphitic carbon nitride is applied as supramolecular seeds in CNFs and demonstrates significant promotion of fiber graphitization, while it decomposes at elevated temperatures. Further studies show that the higher carbon content contributes to the better heat resistance of seeds; thus, nanoscale 2,6-diaminopyridine/cyanuric acid and 2,4,6-triaminopyrimidine/barbituric acid supramolecular seeds are developed. Both systems can be uniformly distributed in PAN precursors through in situ self-assembly and withstand high-temperature carbonization without severe pyrolysis. The dispersed seeds contribute to the formation of fibrillar PAN crystals and promote their conversion to ordered graphitic domains through nucleation and templating roles. The obtained CNFs exhibit increased crystallinity and graphitization degree with improved orientation and refined size of fiber crystals. As a result, the strength, modulus, and elongation at break of CNFs are comprehensively enhanced.

Abstract:Electrospun zein membranes were prepared using DMF as solvent. By changing the solution concentration, the electrospinning voltage and the distance between the spinneret and collector, nanofibrous meshes without bead defects could be obtained. In order to improve the mechanical strength of the hydrated zein meshes, core-shell-structured nanofibrous membranes with PCL as the core material and zein forming the shell were prepared by coaxial electrospinning. The core-shell structure of the composite fibers was confirmed by SEM characterization of the fibers, either extracted with chloroform to remove the inner PCL, or elongated to expose their cross-section. The composition and average diameter of the composite fibers could be modulated by the feed rate of the inner PCL solution. It was found that the core-shell fibrous membranes have similar wettability to the electrospun zein mesh. The presence of PCL in the fibers could significantly improve the mechanical properties of the zein membrane.
Luminous Self-Assembled Fibers of Azopyridines and Quantum Dots Enabled by Synergy of Halogen Bond and Alkyl Chain Interactions

Abstract:Herein, a simple approach for the fabrication of luminous self-assembled fibers based on halogen-bonded azopyridine complexes and oleic acid-modified quantum dots (QDs) is reported. The QDs uniformly align on the edge of the self-assembled fibers through the formation of van der Waals force between the alkyl chain of oleic acid on the QD surface and the alkyl chain of the halogen-bonded complexes, 15Br or 15I. Furthermore, the intermolecular interaction mechanism was elucidated by using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This approach results in retention of the fluorescence properties of the QDs in the fibers. In addition, the bromine-bonded fibers can be assembled into tailored directional fibers upon evaporation of the solvent (tetrahydrofuran) when using capillaries via the capillary force. Interestingly, the mesogenic properties of the halogen-bonded complexes are preserved in the easily prepared halogen-bonded fluorescent fibers; this provides new insight into the design of functional self-assembly materials.

Abstract:Fabrication of highly ordered and dense nanofibers assemblies is of key importance in designing high-performance and multi-functional materials. In this work, we design an experimental approach in silico, combining shear flow and solvent evaporation to establish nanofiber alignment and densification of the assemblies. We demonstrate the feasibility of this approach by performing dissipative particle dynamics simulations, where the hydrodynamic and thermal fluctuation effects are fully modeled. We find that the microstructural order of assembled nanofibers can be established within a specific range of the Peclet number and evaporation flux. The underlying mechanism is elucidated by considering the competition between hydrodynamic coupling and fluctuating dynamics of nanofibers. Based on these understandings, we outline a practical setup to fabricate highly ordered and dense nanofiber assemblies.

Abstract:Organic nanofibres were made by self-assembly of a simple gelator containing fluorene. The ratio of the length and diameter of the fibres strongly depends on the concentration of the gel. By the help of two reference molecules and spectral data, the mechanism of the nanofibre formation was investigated. An appropriate cooperation of hydrogen bonds, π⋯π interactions and steric hindrance is the key to the formation of the gel and nanofibres.

Abstract:Zirconia nanofibers were fabricated by the sol-gel combined with an electrospinning process. The spinnable sol was prepared with zirconium carbonate and acetic acid as raw materials, yttrium nitrate as phase stabilizer, and polyvinyl pyrrolidone as spinning aid. Formation mechanism of spinnable sol was studied. The possible structure of Poly zirconium acetate (PZA) and idealized formation process of PZA were researched in this mechanism. Electrospinning process and heat-treatment process were also researched. Being heat-treated to 1200 degrees C, the fibers with diameters of 400-600 nm are composed of 20-40 nm tetragonal zirconia grains, which is crack free with smooth surface. Abstract:With the elaborate engineering of supra-amphiphiles based on dual charge-transfer interactions, the rational design and programmable transformation of well-defined 1D and 2D nanostructures have been demonstrated. First, H-shaped supra-amphiphiles are successfully obtained on the basis of the directional charge-transfer interactions of naphthalene diimide and naphthalene, which self-assemble in water to form 2D nanosheets. Second, by complexation of the H-shaped supra-amphiphiles with pyrene derivatives, the 2D nanosheets transform into ultralong 1D nanofibers. Therefore, this line of research represents a successful example of supramolecular engineering and has enriched its realm.

Abstract:Upon supramolecular self-assembly, novel conductive hybrid nanofibers were successfully fabricated using three amphiphilic salts, azopyridinium, aniline hydrochloride, and alkylbenzenesulfate-based anionic surfactants. The interactions like π-π stacking and ionic bonding among the different compounds played important roles in preparation of these multicomponent hybrid nanofibers. These were demonstrated by measurements of XRD, UV-vis absorption, and FTIR spectra. Interesting conductivity in an order of magnitude of 1 × 10(-7) to 1 × 10(-5) S/cm was observed in films of the fabricated hybrid nanofibers, which was attributed to the existence of freely movable ions, showing their possible applications as bionanomaterials and nanoelectronic devices. The fabrication processes of the conductive nanofibers might provide references for simulation of nerve fibers in nature.

Abstract:Nanosilver was prepared by photoreduction method and the size and shape of the nanosilver can be easilly controlled by changing the organic capping reagent such as pyridine, nicotinic acid, 2,2'-dipyridylamine and 2,2'-bipyridine. Using different capping reagents, different shapes of nanosilvers, such as nanoribbon, nanotriangle or nanowire, can be obtained under mild condition.

Abstract:Building well-defined hierarchical architectures via supramolecular chemistry is one of the challenges in nanotechnology and is crucial to our understanding of biological self-assembly and biological phenomenon. In this work, a well-ordered one-dimensional (1 D) helix is fabricated with a novel sugar-based lipid by virtue of multiple non-covalent interactions (i.e. hydrophobic interaction, aromatic stacking, and hydrogen bond). The robust helical nanostructure is evidenced by negative-staining TEM, cryo-TEM and circular dichroism (CD). A series of amphiphilic molecules are also synthesized to explore molecular structure-performance relationship and elucidate intermolecular forces that contribute to complex architectures. Moreover, the supramolecular nanohelices in this work are demonstrated to be "smart nanostructures" which can be shaped into spherical micelles, vesicles or unfolded nanofibers by external stimuli, such as pH, light, and surfactant addition.

Abstract:This paper reports a facile solvothermal approach for the design and synthesis of novel crystalline COF nanofibers with amazing properties. An interesting morphological transformation from microsphere to nanofibers was observed, which could be supported by the unique dissolution-recrystallization mechanism due to the reversible nature of dynamic imine bonding. Interestingly, it was also found that the COF nanofibers could epitaxial grow on the aramid microfiber surface. This functional nanocomposite showed an interesting colorimetric humidity-responsive behavior. Our study provides a general methodology for the fabrication of COFs with designated micronanostructures and has more implications on their applications in catalyst and sensors.
