Abstract:We report a new structure for broadband antireflection coating by dip-coating technique, which has minimal cost and is compatible with large-scale manufacturing. The coatings are prepared by depositing SiO2 sol-gel film on a glass substrate, subsequently depositing SiO2 single-layer particle coating through electrostatic attraction, and depositing a final very thin SiO2 sol-gel film to improve the mechanical strength of the whole coating structure. The refractive index of the structure changes gradually from the top to the substrate. The transmittance of a glass substrate has been experimentally found to be improved in the spectral range of 400-1 400 nm and in the incidence angle range from 0 degrees to at least 45 degrees. The mechanical strength is immensely improved because of the additional thin SiO2 sol-gel layer. The surface texture can be applied to the substrates of different materials and shapes as an add-on coating.

Abstract:Wide-angle and broadband antireflection (AR) coating is of the essence in modern optical systems in many fields, which has a great influence on the stray light and imaging quality. A simple and convenient manufacturing method is proposed to address this issue based on a composite coating combining the nano-tapered Al2O3•xH2O (AH) structure and high-low index thin film stack. The optical properties of nano-tapered AH structure at various thickness are first studied and modeled in optics by several homogeneous sub-layers with the graded equivalent index. The designed composite AR coatings are manufactured by vacuum deposition and wet etching subsequently in the hot deionized water. Compared to the common dielectric multilayer antireflection stack, the composite coating presents excellent AR performance. The measured average reflectance values of the double-side coated BK7 glass are as low as 0.40%, 0.41%, 0.56% and 3.13% in 400-1100nm band at angles of incidence (AOI) of 6°, 20°, 40°, and 60°, respectively, while the measured average transmittance at normal incidence increases up to 99.3%. Finally, the process reproductivity, environmental reliability test including long term storage, high temperature annealing and 85°C-85% relative humidity storage of the composite coatings are evaluated. The proposed AR scheme provides a low-cost, efficient, wide-angle and broadband AR coating for kinds of large-curvature components and complex surfaces in fields of consumer electronics, automotive, security, etc.

Abstract:Antireflection coatings with sapphire-like hardness are highly desired in advanced engineering applications. Currently, classic (LH)^n structures based on Si3N4/SiO2 stacks are widely used to obtain high optical transparency and surface hardness in industry. However, it still suffers from low durability and multiple failures after wear and scratch tests. Herein, we selected Ta2O5/Si3N4 nanolaminates to fabricate toughened AR coatings with similar refractive indices, overcoming the brittleness of thick nitride films. Furthermore, we proposed another graded AR coating, using a"Step up-step down" method to combine the hardness gradient structure with optical design. The toughened AR coating exhibited a low reflectance of 0.8% (420-780 nm) and a remarkable hardness of 22.8 GPa, meanwhile demonstrating the ability to withstand abrasion from steel wool up to 3,000 times. The graded AR coating achieves high transparency (Tave>98.8%, 420-720 nm), high surface hardness (H>23 GPa), and low residual stress (~680 MPa). Notably, no additional damage was observed during 6 months after the scratch test, such as cracking, peeling, and delamination.

Abstract:It is of great importance to develop antireflective (AR) coatings and techniques because improved optical performance has been progressively prerequisite for wide-ranging applications such as flat panel displays, optoelectronic devices or solar cells. Natural surroundings inspire researchers considerably to impersonate in order to provoke analogous characteristics via artificial approaches, which provide the opportunity for emerging techniques and development in material engineering. Herein, SiO2 antireflective (AR) coatings comprised of two layers were fabricated using a physical vapour deposition method via glancing angle. The top layer fabricated at an oblique angle of 80 degrees and the bottom layer close to the substrate was deposited at a deposition angle of 0 degrees. The experimental outcomes demonstrate that there is a slight influence on the refractive index of thin films by changing the morphology of nanostructures keeping deposition angles the same. The top layer shows a periodic arrangement of SiO2 nanostructures while the bottom stratum represents a SiO2 compact dense layer. The assembled bilayer SiO2 AR coating retains omnidirectional AR efficiency and tunability at a preferred wavelength range displaying <1% reflectance. Moreover, the fabricated omnidirectional SiO2 AR coatings have thermal stability up to 300 degrees C. These SiO2 AR coatings also possess negative temperature resistivity to withstand different cold storage conditions. Hence, the flexible and environmental adaptive SiO2 AR coating offers an intriguing route for imminent research in optics.
Broadband Absorption Coating for Large-Curvature Surfaces by Atomic Layer Deposition

Abstract:For many applications, large curvature surfaces or complicated 3D structures are required to absorb light that falls on them to reduce stray light or energy collection. A novel, to the best of our knowledge, strategy with a metal–dielectric film stack by the atomic layer deposition technique is put forward to achieve broadband absorption coating covering both sides of a quartz tube completely. Absorptive metallic material of titanium–aluminum–carbon composite and dielectric material of aluminum oxide ( A l 2 O 3 ) is employed to realize high absorption ( > 99 % ) for the 400–780 nm band with the configuration of a six-layer metal–dielectric film stack. Good angle insensitivity up to 50° for P - and S -polarizations is demonstrated experimentally with the proposed structure on a glass slab. The average absorption of the coated quartz tube reaches as high as 99% for all curving areas on the inner and outer sides, while the nonuniformity is confined to 1.5% for the axial and circumferential directions. This presented approach has enormous potential in the fields of optical detection, optical imaging, optical sensing, and energy management.
Durable Broadband and Omnidirectional Ultra-antireflective Surfaces

Abstract:Light reflection from surfaces is ubiquitous in nature. Diverse optoelectronic devices need durable, omnidirectional, and transparent ultra-antireflective surfaces. Here, we engineered antireflective transparent surfaces composed of silica nanocaps through a simple thermal treatment of a silica-coated monolayer colloidal crystal template. The relationship between the structure and the antireflective performance of the silica nanocaps was systematically studied both experimentally and numerically. On the basis of the understanding of the structure-antireflection relationships, ultra-antireflection coatings with a transmittance of ∼98.75 ± 0.15% in the visible wavelength range were prepared by fabricating two differently sized silica nanocaps. More importantly, the antireflection of the coatings formed by two differently sized nanocaps demonstrated poor dependence on the angle of the incident light (i.e., omnidirectionality). The reflection is <2.5% even at an incident angle of 60°. The prepared ultra-antireflective silica nanocap coatings outperform state-of-the-art transparent antireflective coatings regarding the antireflection performance, the wavelength range, and the omnidirectionality. The silica nanoshells were welded together with the underlying fused silica. Therefore, they can sustain common mechanical friction and scratching, demonstrating extraordinary mechanical durability as verified by sand abrasion tests. Further, the silanized silica nanocaps turned out to be hydrophobic with an outstanding self-cleaning performance without prominently influencing the transmittance. The durable and omnidirectional ultra-antireflective transparent silica nanocaps will have promising applications in solar energy conversion and storage, displays, optical lenses, and a wide range of optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Trimethylamine (TMA), TiCl4, and water are applied as the precursors to deposit Al2O3 and TiO2. With different substrate temperatures, the optical properties and surface morphologies of the two oxides TiO2 and SiO2 are studied, respectively. With substrate temperature of 120 oC, amorphous TiO2 can be obtained, and the surface roughness (RMS) is only 0.928 nm. Applying Al2O3 and TiO2 deposited in 120 oC as low and high refractive index materials, anti-reflection (AR) coating at single point (550 nm) is designed. Furthermore, with the calibrated growth rates, this AR coating is fabricated, and its ultimate reflectance for the AR coating at 550 nm is less than 0.2%, which can meet the requirement for most applications.

Abstract:A novel technique, coating glass with low reflection Si nanofilm by atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition (APCVD), has been successfully developed to address the light pollution problem. The film was studied with Raman spectroscopy. The result show that after annealing, fairly large grain of SiO2 forms on the film surface, which effectively scatters light considerably to reduces the mirror reflectance.

Abstract:A polarization-sensitive, wide-angle operating antireflection coating based on a metal-insulator-metal structure is investigated. In both visible and near-infrared regions, it dramatically reduces the reflection and enhances the transmission through a seamless Ag film near a specifically designed frequency due to the surface plasmon resonance. By achieving above 70% transmission through a 20 nm-thickness Ag film theoretically, this antireflection coating is able to open an extraordinary transmission window for a metallic layer without any slits or holes.

Abstract:Single layer antireflection (SLAR) sol-gel films on super white glass substrates were prepared by hierarchically introducing hollow silica nano-spheres (HSNs) and F127 templated nano-pores. HSNs and F127 templated nano-pores were formed by base and acid catalyzed sol-gel processes, respectively. The dispersibility of HSNs was ameliorated by Ph-TES surface modifications. The porosity of the SLAR films was engineered by a step-by-step addition of nano-pores and HSNs so that the refractive index could be tuned to be as low as the desired value of 1.24. It accordingly improved the transmittance of the films with an optimized maximum transmittance of 98.21% in the visible spectral region. Furthermore, the concentration of modified HSNs was adjusted to modulate the peak transmittance wavelength from 550 nm to 680 nm. The nano-scale surface embossments due to the addition of HSNs was also contributory to the antireflective effect of the films, especially at 45 degrees or 5 degrees incident angle. As a result, the average transmittance of the double side coating super white glass was increased by 7.10% at 400-1000 nm with good wear resistance. The porosity directed mechanical durability varied from 6H to 3H (pencil hardness). It displays considerable AR application prospects for suitable optical and optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Subwavelength nanostructures are considered as promising building blocks for antireflection and light trapping applications. In this study, we demonstrate excellent broadband antireflection effect from thin films of monolayer silica nanospheres with a diameter of 100 nm prepared by Langmuir-Blodgett method on glass substrates. With a single layer of compact silica nanosphere thin film coated on both sides of a glass, we achieved maximum transmittance of 99% at 560 nm. Furthermore, the optical transmission peak of the nanosphere thin films can be tuned over the UV-visible range by changing processing parameters during Langmuir-Blodgett deposition. The tunable optical transmission peaks of the Langmuir-Blodgett films were correlated with deposition parameters such as surface pressure, surfactant concentration, ageing of suspensions and annealing effect. Such peak-tunable broadband antireflection coating has wide applications in diversified industries such as solar cells, windows, displays and lenses.

Abstract:The strategy of resin-anchored hollow silica particles (HSPs) offers a tempting option for large-scale fabrication of anti-reflective functional surfaces on flexible plastic substrates. However, attempts to experimentally investigate the structure-performance relationship of such anti-reflective coatings and to further optimize the coating structure require long experimental cycles and significant labor costs. In view of this, the effectiveness of using COMSOL two-dimensional (2D) simulation to solve the problem is validated in conjunction with experimental results. Then three coating structure models are investigated. Finally, a coating with ultra-low reflectance in the entire visible wavelength band (380–780 nm) is designed. The coating has a novel structure consisting of resin-anchored double-layer unequal-size HSPs. It combines two anti-reflective principles, the moth-eye bionic structure and the refractive index adjustment of the film layer. The maximum reflectance of the coating is only 0.32 % over the entire visible wavelength range, and its average reflectance reaches an ultra-low level of 0.14 %. The coating has a wide angle anti-reflective performance. When the angle of incidence is <60°, the reflectance of the coating is <3 %. The results of this study are expected to provide direction for later experimental improvements.

Abstract:In this study, we developed a simple and versatile strategy to fabricate hierarchically structured lotus-leaf-like superhydrophobic thin films. The thin films are broadband antireflective, and the average transmittance of coated glass substrates reached greater than 95% in the wavelength range of 530-1340 nm, in contrast to 92.0% for bare glass substrate. The thin film surface shows a static water contact angle of 162 degrees and a sliding angle less than 4 degrees. Moreover, the thin film is thermally stable up to 300 degrees C, and shows remarkable stability against strong acid, strong alkali, water drop impact, and sand impact abrasion, while retaining its superhydrophobicity. Further, the thin film can pass the 3H pencil hardness test. The current approach may open a new avenue to a variety of practical applications, including windshields, eyeglasses, windows of high rise buildings and solar cells, etc.

Abstract:Nature instigates researchers significantly in imitating to engender comparable properties using artificial methods, which unlocks developing trend in material science and engineering progress. Fabricating graded-index nanostructures is an effective approach to tune and generate similar properties artificially such as the moth's eye antireflectance (AR) or lotus like superhydrophobicity. Herein, Bilayer AR coatings with periodically arranged SiO2 hierarchical nanostructures resembling moth eyes are fabricated on dense SiO2 matrix base layer using the versatile route of glancing angle deposition technique (GLAD). The refractive indices of monolayer SiO2 are tuned from 1.46 to 1.08 by changing the deposition angle () from 0 to 88 degrees. The fabricated bilayer SiO2 AR (BSAR) film possess high optical omnidirectional broadband transparency and tunability at a desired wavelength range showing <1% reflectance. The present AR design is flexible and practically applicable to various supporting substrate materials ( varies from 1.45 to 1.9). Furthermore, the omnidirectional BSAR films show multiple functions including enhanced mechanical strength, the thermal stability (up to 300 degrees C), and hydrophobic capability with a water contact angle (CA) of 147 degrees to withstand under humid environment. This multipurpose coating provides an intriguing route in optics field for imminent research.

Abstract:Antireflection (AR) coatings with sapphire-like hardness are highly desired in various applications. Traditionally, hard AR coatings resist penetration, scratching, and abrasion by depositing a hard layer, such as silicon nitride (Si 3 N 4 ), with a 1 to 2 μm thickness. However, thick Si 3 N 4 thin films, fabricated by high-energy inductively coupled plasma assisted (ICP-assisted) sputtering, often introduce high residual stress, leading to severe buckling problems when the surface is scratched. To address these challenges, we employ a "Step up-step down" design method, integrating a hardness gradient structure with a series of SiO x N y films. This approach achieves high optical transmittance (Tave > 98.7 % at 420–720 nm), low residual stress (∼680 MPa), improved scratch resistance, and strong adhesion at the film-substrate interface (L C3 ∼180 mN). Our findings demonstrate significant potential for various mechanical and optical applications, including automotive and consumer electronics devices.

Organic Polymer Composite with Inorganic SiO2 Particles for Mechanical Robustness and Self-Cleaning Anti-Reflective Coatings

Abstract:Anti-reflective coatings prepared from SiO2 nanoparticles have excellent anti-reflective properties, but the coating's poor mechanical properties and low self-cleaning performance limit its practical application. In this work, SiO2 nanoparticles were modified into hydrophobic particles using surface modification, and then organic polymer were added as a binder to formulate SiO2 sols, which were coated onto a glass substrate to form a antireflective coating. The coating can enable the glass substrate to achieve a transmittance of 99.1 % at 580 nm, and it can increase the average transmittance of the glass substrate from 89.6% to 96.2 % in the 400-1100 nm band. In addition, the coatings prepared from hydrophobic SiO2 nanoparticles composite organic polymers have a water contact angle of 136 degrees, resulting in good self-cleaning properties. The organic polymers can connect the SiO2 nanoparticles together, increasing the mechanical properties of the coating. This multifunctional antireflective coating with high transmittance, good mechanical properties and self-cleaning is beneficial in many applications, such as photovoltaic glass, architectural glass, displays and more.

Abstract:Excellent broadband antireflection (AR) effect from thin films of monolayer silica nanospheres with diameter of ∼100nm self-assembled on glass substrates was demonstrated. With a monolayer thin film of silica nanospheres coated on both sides of a glass, we achieved maximum transmittance of ∼99% at 560nm. Preliminary result shows that such monolayer thin film could be applied in organic solar cells to enhance the light absorption in the polymer active layer. OPV device with single side nanospheres AR layer has gained an efficiency enhancement of ∼8% compared to devices without AR layers.

Abstract:Multilayer broadband antireflective (AR) coatings consisting of porous layers usually suffers poor functional durability. Based on a quarter-half-quarter multilayer structure, AR coatings with dense SiO2 film as the top layer are designed, and refractive index for each layer is optimized. After heat-treated at only 150 °C, refractive index of Nb2O5 film reaches to 2.072 (at 550 nm), which can meet design requirements of the middle layer. TiO2–SiO2 composites with controllable refractive indices are selected to be used as the bottom layer. The obtained triple-layer AR coating presents excellent performance, and the average transmittance at 400–800 nm attains 98.41%. Dense layers endow the multilayer structure good abrasion-resistance, and hexamethyldisilazane is further used to modify the surface of the AR coating, which can greatly improve the hydrophobicity of the coating. The proposed triple-layer broadband AR coating has potential value in practical applications of sol–gel deposition.

Abstract:Antireflective coatings play an important role in various optical devices . Herein, we developed omnidirectional antireflective coatings fabricated with charged chitin nanofibers (ChNFs) through layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly technology. The charged ChNFs were prepared from chitin with modifications of esterification (negatively charged) and esterification followed partial deacetylation (positively charged), respectively, through ultrasonic treatment. The effects of concentration of the ChNF suspensions and number of bilayers on thickness, refractive index and antireflective capacity of the ChNF coatings were investigated. Refractive index of the ChNF coatings can be manipulated by changing concentration of the ChNF suspensions. Thickness of the ChNF coatings depends on number of bilayers and concentration of the ChNF suspensions. The ChNF coating on a glass substrate with 5 bilayers fabricated using the suspensions with concentration 0.1% had a refractive index of 1.36 and yielded 4% gain in transmittance compared to the glass at the wavelength of 550 nm. This work demonstrates that charged ChNFs are promising building blocks to fabricate antireflective coatings on large size substrates with high efficiency and low cost through LbL self-assembly.
