Abstract:Entrepreneurship is a very important impacting factor in the growth of firms and economies. Firstly, this paper argues that entrepreneurship is a multi-level model adapting to the various environments. And secondly, basing on the analysis of a set of cases from Wenzhou, China, this paper finds that each level of entrepreneurship should be adjusted differently to adapt to the specific entrepreneurial context. This paper also points out that we can’t capture the multifacet meanings of entrepreneurship totally unless integrating these four perspectives: traits, vision, competencies, and culture, while the characteristics of these four levels in the adjustment process are diversity. Finally, possible further research directions are also put forward.

Abstract:This study investigates synergies between individual and national variables that promote opportunity and necessity entrepreneurship with a framework based on the national system of entrepreneurship. A qualitative comparative analysis of fuzzy sets of 39 country cases shows that institutional or individual cognitive elements are not necessary for high-opportunity or high-necessity entrepreneurship but that enhancing entrepreneurs’ ability perceptions play a universal role. The study's findings reveal optimal pathways that combine the institutional environment and individual perceptions to promote the synergistic development of opportunity and necessity entrepreneurship and reduce differences in entrepreneurial activities between countries.

Abstract:Disruptive innovation theory has received widespread attention. With the rapid development of the Chinese economy, Chinese firms accomplished many instances of innovative disruption in recent years, and many latecomer companies are gradually growing into world class innovative companies. As an emerging economy, it is necessary to analyze how China may achieve more disruptive innovations in the future, and what Chinese companies should do when faced with disruptive innovation threats and opportunities. We investigated several Chinese companies' disruptive growth with the aim of further developing the original disruptive innovation theory by incorporating Chinese experience. We divided disruptive innovation types into disruptive strategy innovation, disruptive technology innovation, and disruptive business model innovation, and then analyzed their characteristics separately. Using this perspective to examine different Chinese companies’ innovation processes, and adopting holistic innovation theory, we built a model for leading constructive innovation that bypasses the western disruptive innovation and creative destruction model. We propose this as a useful alternative framework for global corporate innovation.

Abstract:PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to focus on the cultural cognition of ChineseZhong-yongthinking, which is deeply rooted in Chinese Confucius culture, and to examine how entrepreneurs’Zhong-yongthinking is related to new venture performance throughguanxinetwork, and also examine how environmental turbulence affects the influencing mechanism.Design/methodology/approachThis paper follows an empirical design. Data are collected from a survey administered to entrepreneurs in new ventures of China. Regression analysis is used to test the hypothesis.FindingsResults show that entrepreneurs’Zhong-yongthinking is positively related toguanxiand new venture performance, andguanximediates the relationship between entrepreneurs’Zhong-yongthinking and new venture performance. In addition, environmental turbulence moderates the relationship between entrepreneurs’Zhong-yongthinking andguanxisuch that the relationship is stronger under higher technological turbulence or lower market turbulence.Research limitations/implicationsThis research uses cross-sectional data, so causal conclusions cannot be made. In addition, more moderators should be considered.Practical implicationsThe present study enriches the understanding of how entrepreneurs’Zhong-yongthinking affects new ventures, which helps entrepreneur understand how to strategize according to external environment and develop what kind of cognitive style to deal with complex situation of their own venture.Originality/valueThis study is a pioneer in exploring non-Western cognitive style–Zhong-yongthinking in entrepreneurial context. It not only enriches the understanding of how Chinese wisdom affects organizational strategy and organizational performance but also advances the cognition research in the field of entrepreneurship.

Global entrepreneurship and the origin of an ecosystem root firm : The case of China ? s solar PV industry

Abstract:In contrast to the extensive literature on the benefits, origins and evolution of existing industrial clusters and ecosystems, there is much less investigation of the foundational spark of their origins. To deepen our understanding of this critical stage, we have undertaken a study of the origin of the firm that became the most important root firm in China?s solar PV ecosystem to answer two related questions. First, how was this firm established in an environment that lacked nearly all of the factors representing necessary resources and opportunity? Second, how and why did this firm become a root in what eventually emerged as the most dynamic national ecosystem within the global solar PV industry? We find that the entrepreneur?s strategy?what we term ?global entrepreneurship??enabled him to found his firm before a supporting ecosystem existed in China. However, the emerging constraints of global entrepreneurship later motivated him to actively contribute to the development of a local ecosystem, in addition to the passive and involuntary role as a source of spin-offs as highlighted by studies of root firms in other industrial ecosystems such as Silicon Valley and Detroit. Our findings suggest that the geographic dimension of entrepreneurship could be important in understanding not only the founding of firms in seemingly incongruous locations, but also the motivation and process by which they may become root firms that actively, not just passively, help establish a new local ecosystem. How Entrepreneurs Can Build Ecosystems for New Venture Creation

Abstract:Despite extant research on how established firms manage interdependences and complementarities in an ecosystem, little is known regarding the ecosystem strategies that entrepreneurs can take to found and grow a new firm with resource constraints. Especially, there was no study on how startups may pursue specialization and ecosystem value co-creation when located in a region lacking co-specialized firms as potential ecosystem partners. Through a longitudinal study of Suntech from its founding and growth to the world’s largest solar PV producer, we identify two distinct ecosystem strategies of the founder-entrepreneur in the founding and growth stages: initially, engaging globally-dispersed ecosystem partners; and subsequently, cultivating new local ecosystem partners. Our analysis shed light on the entrepreneuri-al motivations and enablers for the staged ecosystem strategies, as well as the economic driver behind the shift of strategies across the founding and growth phases. Our findings contribute to the research on ecosystem strategy, by elucidating how entrepreneurs build ecosystems to build new ventures.

Abstract:The external environment faced by underdeveloped regions is becoming increasingly complex, and the importance of entrepreneurial activities is gradually becoming prominent. To stimulate entrepreneurial vitality in underdeveloped regions, entrepreneurial opportunities are of paramount importance. In the current research on opportunity co-creation and entrepreneurial action, there is often an oversight regarding the liability of newness and the unique characteristics of underdeveloped regions, which has resulted in a lack of specificity in interpreting the underlying mechanisms at play. In this study, based on the perspective of opportunity co-creation, a survey of 330 entrepreneurs is conducted in four underdeveloped regions in China, namely, Hunan, Guizhou, Sichuan, and Chongqing, in an attempt to clarify the mechanism of opportunity co-creation in entrepreneurial action. The results show that opportunity co-creation not only has a direct positive impact on entrepreneurial action but also exerts an indirect positive effect through the mediating effect of opportunity belief. Additionally, regulatory focus plays a positive moderating role. Our study reveals that entrepreneurs in underdeveloped regions should be strict with their investors and partners to improve their belief in the chances of entrepreneurial success so as to efficiently co-create opportunities. Meanwhile, governments in underdeveloped regions should pay attention to creating a favorable entrepreneurial environment, actively building facilities that are conducive to entrepreneurial activities, and creating more entrepreneurial and employment opportunities to help entrepreneurial activities be carried out smoothly.

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explain the miraculous rise of the mobile phone industry in China in particular and China’s impressive industrial growth in recent decades in general. Design/methodology/approach This paper uses qualitative or story-telling approach for empirical analysis. Specifically, it uses case studies to illustrate the authors’ arguments. Findings Utilizing the theory of imitative strategies of latecomer firms and I.M. Kirzner’s concept of entrepreneurial alertness, this paper argues that adaptive entrepreneurs in China’s phone industry survive by being alert to profit opportunities, flexible and adaptable to the changing environments. With limited resources and low technological capabilities at the beginning, Chinese phone makers conduct replication via reverse engineering. Through entrepreneurial learning and imitation, they are able to make indigenous or incremental innovation. The modified models with functions compatible to different groups of consumers and sold at low prices are able to penetrate the low-end markets in the Third World nations. Practical implications The authors’ explanation on the success of China’s mobile phone industry sheds light on broader China’s industrial growth as a result of economic reform. Originality/value Most studies on China’s mobile phone industry focus on technological analysis, without acknowledging the role of entrepreneurship. This study fills the gap.
Entrepreneurial Strategies During Institutional Changes: Evidence from China’s Economic Transition

Abstract:Research Summary Institutional changes create entrepreneurial opportunities and entrepreneurs strategically respond to institutional pressure. However, we lack an understanding of how institutional changes impact entrepreneurial strategies. By exploiting the regional disparities in China's economic transition, we examine how institutional changes alter the effects of entrepreneurial strategies. Using data from an alumni survey in China, we find that relationship-based strategies are positively associated with firm size in the early stage of the institutional change, innovation-based strategies appear more effective in the late stage, and "cocoon-based" strategies are associated with larger firm size in the intermediate stage. We propose that entrepreneurs may temporarily leverage "cocoon institutions" to buffer uncertainty in the broader institutional environment. Overall, we contribute to research at the intersection of institutional change and entrepreneurial strategies. Managerial Summary Institutional environments influence the effectiveness of entrepreneurial strategies. How should entrepreneurs adopt different strategies at different stages of an institutional change? We tackle this question by examining China's transition from a planned economy to a market economy. Using data from an alumni survey in China, we find that relationship-based strategies promote firm growth in the early stage, innovation-based strategies appear more effective in the late stage, and locating in science parks benefits firm growth in the intermediate stage. Overall, our study implies that entrepreneurs should adopt different strategies to fit different types of institutional environments. Also, our study provides implications to policymakers that cocoon institutions, such as science parks, may be temporarily effective during the intermediate stage of an institutional change.

Abstract:The article looks at the phenomenon of the new entrants surpassing the market establishers in China's and the USA's electric vehicle marketplace. Most of the current studies focus on the leading companies having first moves on early technology adoption. Based on the results from the expert interviews and literature review, we compared cases from both China and the USA. The study constructed and validated a framework for a theoretical model for the innovation drive, the technological mode and the business model to explain underlining driving factors and mechanisms where new entrants are taking the lead in the electric vehicle market. Suggestions for both new entrants and establishers are provided based on the established framework.

Abstract:Identity transformation is of great importance to the technology commercialization of academic spin-offs and, more broadly, to entrepreneurial opportunity development. This importance may be attributed to individuals adhering to a specific role identity and conforming to relevant standards that might trigger resistance toward opportunity development. While extant literature has emphasized the importance of identity in predicting a venture’s strategic choice, many of the studies have overlooked the dynamic process of one’s role identity management and how identity work interacts with opportunity development. Through an inductive, qualitative study for 27 academic entrepreneurs in China, we highlight the differences of identity management approaches (i.e., decoupling, aggregating, deleting) in predicting one’s opportunity development strategies and how such strategies inversely affect one’s identity transformation. Our findings contribute to existing theory by uncovering that academic entrepreneurs’ capability to explore opportunity is not only constrained by the field-level institutional logic but also by their role identities.

Abstract:Should new ventures with limited resources invest in corporate environmental responsibility (CER)? Considering the significance of entrepreneurship's considerable social and economic influences, this question is critical for both researchers and practitioners. Drawing on signaling theory, we argue that CER is an effective strategy for new ventures to overcome the liability of newness by shaping accountability and professionalism perceived by stakeholders, which in turn enhances their financial performance. Furthermore, this positive impact is reinforced by new ventures' corporate political activity, whereas institutional pressure weakens such an impact. Using a nationally representative sample of 2,147 Chinese new ventures, these hypotheses are largely found supported. This research makes important theoretical contributions to the entrepreneurship literature by shedding new light on how new ventures overcome the liability of newness, and also extends the environmental management literature by providing a novel and entrepreneurship-based explanation regarding the performance implications of CER.

Abstract:It has been increasingly recognized that entrepreneurship plays a crucial role in successful economies. The Schumpeterian approach to growth (Aghion and Howitt, 1997) advances the view that entrepreneurial dynamism is the key to innovation and growth. A growing body of policy work emphasizes the important role of entrepreneurs in economic development (World Bank, 2003). Yet, research on entrepreneurship in economics is rather limited. There are three distinct perspectives on entrepreneurship in social sciences. The first perspective focuses on the role of economic, political, and legal institutions in fostering or restricting entrepreneurship. Institutional problems are seen in credit constraints that make it impossible to borrow and set up businesses; insecurity of property rights that provides insufficient incentives for entrepreneurs; and regulatory burdens that make setting up new enterprises difficult. The second perspective focuses on the sociological variables shaping entrepreneurship. For example, sociologists study the role of values and social networks in promoting or discouraging entrepreneurial activities. Social networks may work through a variety of channels, such as family, friends, or ethnic groups. The third perspective emphasizes individual characteristics of entrepreneurs. Psychologists have studied the traits associated with entrepreneurship - such as a personal need for achievement, belief in the effect of personal effort on outcomes, attitudes towards risk, and individual self-confidence. Although there are studies on each perspective, little work looks at each of these factors taking the other into account. This is precisely what we do in this paper, using a new data set of Chinese entrepreneurs and a matching sample of non-entrepreneurs with similar age, gender and educational characteristics. The survey covers both entrepreneurs and non-entrepreneurs in order to understand how they differ in individual characteristics, family background, social networks, values and beliefs, and perceptions of the institutional environment. Abstract:Entrepreneurship, energy consumption, financial inclusion, and environmental sustainability are intricately connected and mutually reinforcing domains. This study assumes that by promoting entrepreneurial activities in the renewable energy domain and enhancing financial accessibility, we can expedite the transition to a more ecologically sustainable and inclusive paradigm. Utilizing data spanning from 1985 to 2022, this research examines the interrelationships between entrepreneurship, financial accessibility, and environmental sustainability within the Chinese context. Notably, the analysis underscores negative correlations between entrepreneurship, energy consumption, and financial inclusion with environmental sustainability. Conversely, a positive correlation is observed between trade liberalization and environmental sustainability, signifying optimistic prospects for China's economic landscape. The study infers that entrepreneurial ventures are instrumental for China's economic advancement. Collectively, this investigation emphasizes the importance of formulating incentives to foster the emergence of environmentally sustainable enterprises, encourage technological advancements, and promote the development of smart urban environments to mitigate China's ecological impact.

Entrepreneurship in China's Structural Transitions: Network Expansion and Overhang

Abstract:This research examines the determinants of entrepreneurship in the initial transition from agriculture to industrial production and the subsequent transition to higher value exporting in China.Using data covering the universe of registered firms over the 1994-2009 period, we find that individuals born in rural counties with higher agricultural productivity and population density had a greater propensity to enter domestic production in the first transition, but that this association was reversed in the second transition to exporting.This is despite the fact that revenues (and productivity) were increasing more steeply over time for firms drawn from denser birth counties in both activities.The model that we develop to reconcile these facts incorporates a productivity enhancing role for hometown (birth county) networks.We provide causal evidence, using shift-share instruments, that these networks of firms were active and that more densely populated rural counties gave rise to networks that were more effective at increasing the revenues of their members, both in domestic production and exporting.While this generated faster transition in the first stage, the incumbent (more successful) domestic networks drawn from denser counties created a disincentive to subsequently enter exporting.Our analysis identifies a novel dynamic inefficiency that could arise in any developing economy where (overlapping) networks are active.
