Abstract:Titanium has been widely used as a dimensionally stable anode in the electrolysis industry because of its excellent corrosion resistance, conductivity, and scalability. However, because of its poor biocompatibility and poor performance as a bioanode, it has drawn little attention in the field of microbial fuel cells (MFCs). This study reports an efficient way to convert a titanium electrode into a high-performance anode for MFCs, in situ growth of titanium dioxide nanotubes (TNs) on its surface. After TN modification, the titanium surface became rougher, more hydrophilic, and more conducive for anodic biofilm formation. The maximal current density achieved on this TN modified titanium electrode was 12.7 A m(-2), which was 190-fold higher than that of the bare titanium electrode and even higher than that of the most commonly used carbon felt electrode. Therefore, the high conductivity, corrosion resistance, and current density make the TN-modified titanium electrode a promising and scalable anode for MFCs.

Abstract:Sulfonated poly(phthalazinone ether ketone)s (SPPEKs) and zirconium hydrogen phosphate (ZrP) hybrid membranes for direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) were prepared by the impregnation method and direct blending method. The physicochemical properties of these hybrid membranes were studied by means of field-emission scanning electron microscope (FSEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, and thermogravimetry analysis (TGA). For the hybrid membranes prepared from impregnation procedure, the highest proton conductivity could reach 0.074 S/cm at 80°C under 100% relative humidity and the methanol permeability at room temperature is more than 10 times lower than that of Nafion 117. Nanostructured Graphene/Tio2 Hybrids As High-Performance Anodes for Microbial Fuel Cells

Abstract:A new nanostructured graphene/TiO2 (G/TiO2) hybrid was synthesized by a facile microwave-assisted solvothermal process in which amorphous TiO2 was assembled on graphene in situ. The resulting G/TiO2 hybrids were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, Raman spectroscopy, and N2 adsorption/desorption analysis. The electrochemical properties of the hybrids as anode materials for Shewanella-inoculated microbial fuel cells (MFCs) were studied for the first time, and they proved to be effective in improving MFC performance. The significantly improved bacterial attachment and extracellular electron-transfer efficiency could be attributed to the high specific surface area, active groups, large pore volume, and excellent conductivity of the nanostructured G/TiO2 hybrid, and this suggests that it could be a promising candidate for high-performance MFCs.

Abstract:A novel membrane-less microbial fuel cell (ML-MFC) which used the baffles instead of the ion exchange membrane (IEM) was developed for ammonium-containing wastewater treatment and electricity generation. By means of installing an ideal nitrifying unit between the anodic and cathodic chamber, the novel ML-MFC accomplished organics degradation and nitrogen removal without additional loop. The removal efficiencies of COD, NH4+-N and TN achieved 97.07 +/- 0.47%, 91.76 +/- 3.32% and 87.66 +/- 1.59%, respectively. Meanwhile, the effluent pH was near neutral and turbidity was quite low. In addition, the maximum power density of 1.007 +/- 0.032W/m(3) was obtained. Combined with the analysis of microbial community, electroactive bacteria (EAB) Desulfovibrio, Comamonas and Thiobacillus were enriched in biofilm. Considering the superior effluent quality and the promising energy potential, the novel ML-MFC has good application prospects in efficient and sustainable wastewater treatment.
Composite Membranes from Quaternized Chitosan Reinforced with Surface-Functionalized PVDF Electrospun Nanofibers for Alkaline Direct Methanol Fuel Cells

Abstract:In order to obtain a dual-functional nanofiber framework that could simultaneously serve as an ultra-strong reinforcing substrate and a fast ion transport medium, herein, silica coated poly(vinylidene fluoride) (SiO2@PVDF) electrospun nanofiber mat was firstly prepared using a universal polydopamine-assisted sol-gel method. After grafting with dense quaternary ammonium groups, quaternized SiO2@PVDF (QSiO(2)@PVDF) was yield. This mat with densely cationized surface can not only provide a reliable mechanical support for superhydrophilic quaternized chitosan (QCS), but also significantly improve the ionic conductivity of the whole system. The resulting QCS impregnated membrane exhibits satisfactory wet strength of as high as 11.9 MPa while pure QCS is hardly self-supporting. Moreover, the surface high-concentration cationic groups can establish channel-like ion transport pathways with the aid of 1D continuous nanofibers, thus obtaining high ionic conductivity of 0.041 S cm(-1) (80 degrees C), which is about 1.3 times higher than that of pure QCS. The single alkaline fuel cell using this membrane demonstrates a maximum power density of 98.7 mW cm(-2). Therefore, this relatively independent design of mechanically support fiber core and high-concentration ion conduction surface provides a new methodology for fabricating high-performance anion exchange membranes.

Abstract:Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are a novel technique for converting biodegradable materials into electricity. In this study, the efficiency of mixed crystal (TiO2:ZnO) as a membrane modifier of a low-cost, antifouling and self-cleaning cation exchange membrane for MFCs was studied. The modification was prepared using polydopamine (PDA) as the bio-inspired glue, followed by gravity deposition of a mixture of catalyst nanoparticles (TiO2:ZnO 0.03%, 1:1 ratio) as anti-biofouling agents. The effects of the membrane modification were evaluated in terms of power density, open circuit potential, coulombic efficiency, anti-biofouling properties and also color and COD removal efficiency. The results showed that the use of the PDA-modified membrane and a mixture of catalysts facilitated the transfer of cations released during the oxidation process in the anodic compartment of the MFC, which increased the power generation in the MFC by 2.5 times and 5.7 times the current compared to pristine and PDA pristine membranes, decreased the MFC operating cycle time from 5 to 3 days, doubled the lifetime of the membranes and demonstrated higher COD removal efficiency and color removal. Finally, SEM and AFM analysis showed that the modification significantly minimized surface fouling. The modified membranes in this study proved to be a potential alternative to the expensive membranes currently used in MFCs, furthermore, this modification could be an interesting alternative modification for other potential membranes for use in MFCs, due to the fact that the catalyst activation was only performed with visible light (artificial and solar), which could decrease operating costs.

Abstract:The chitosan (CS) matrix-based composite proton exchange membranes (CS/QATP) were prepared by the incorporation of organic-modified attapulgite (QATP) into CS, through an organic-inorganic composite synthesis method. The QATP was obtained by the modification with silane coupling agent (octadecyldimethyl [3-trimethoxysilylpropyl] ammonium chloride). The morphology, crystallinity, thermal and mechanical property, dimensional stability, and proton conductivity of CS/QATP composite membranes were investigated. The compatibility and dispersibility of QATP in CS matrix were significantly improved with enhanced interfacial interaction. The dimensional and thermal stability of the CS/QATP composite membranes were improved compared with pure CS film, owing to good dispersion and lower water uptake. Especially, the composite membrane with 2 wt% QATP (CS/QATP-2) exhibits the highest mechanical strength and proton conductivity, which is much higher than pure CS film. These results indicated that CS/QATP composite membranes have a great potential for proton exchange membranes applications.
Highly Ion-Conductive Anion Exchange Membranes with Superior Mechanical Properties Based on Polymeric Ionic Liquid Filled Functionalized Bacterial Cellulose for Alkaline Fuel Cells

Abstract:How to simultaneously improve the ionic conductivity and mechanical properties is a key problem facing currently used anion-exchange membranes (AEMs). Here, biomass-based bacterial cellulose (BC) was used as a porous template to make TiO2 localized minerali-zation around the surface of BC nanofibers, and constructed a TiO2-coated BC porous substrate (TiO2@BC) with hierarchical structure. Then, the coated TiO2 nanoparticles was densely grafted by quaternary ammonium groups to obtain high ionic conduction ability. After filling with a polymeric ionic liquid (PIL) with high ion exchange capacity through in situ polymerization and crosslinking, the obtained novel PIL-filled AEM possessed ultrahigh ionic conductivity of 100.5 mS cm -1 at 80 degrees C, which was 72.1% higher than that of the PIL-filled pure BC membrane (only 58.4 mS cm -1). Moreover, by the aid of the synergistic reinforcement effect of TiO2@BC, the membrane exhibited extremely high dry strength of 95.3 MPa and satisfactory wet strength and flexibility. When at fully hydrate state, the membrane with the size of 1 x 4 cm (width x length) can hang a bottle containing 1000 g of water. The single cell equipped with this membrane output the peak power density of 40.2 mW cm -2, showing its great potential as a high-performance biomass-based AEM.(c) 2023 The Authors. Abstract:Different inexpensive ion exchange membranes were applied as separation materials in packing-type microbial fuel cells(MFC).The internal resistances,polarization curves,power density,membrane resistance as well as diffusions of organic matter and oxygen were investigated.Compared to MFC with cation exchange membrane as separation material,MFC with anion exchange membrane as separation material had lower internal resistance and higher power density(up to 2.4 W/m2).The internal resistance and membrane resistance of MFC with anion exchange membrane changed less during long-term operation.After long-term operation,cation exchange membranes deposited more salts on the cathode side,which was not observed on the anion exchange membrane.Anion exchange membrane had lower rejection efficiency for NaAc than cation exchange membrane.There was little difference in the rejection of glucose between the anion and cation exchange membranes.CM3 was the best in the rejection of oxygen and organic matter.

The preparation technology of nano-TiO2 particles in a commercial Nafion 112 membrane via novel in situ sol-gel reactions was developed, resulting in a semitransparent membrane with uniform distribution of TiO2 in the proton exchange membrane. It is found that Proton conductivity increases observably by dispersing 3 wt % nano-TiO2 in the Proton exchange membrane at low humidity condition, and the newly prepared TiO2-PEM improve the self-humidifying performance of Proton exchange membrane fuel cell.

Abstract:Microbial fuel cell (MFC) is promoted as an eco-friendly technology for wastewater treatment. However, the use of synthetic polymeric membrane separators raises concerns about the sustainability of MFC, mandating efforts to develop sustainable polymeric membrane with high protonic transfer for MFC assembly. Low-cost and eco-friendly polymer matrix of agar-polyvinyl alcohol (AP) augmented with exfoliated vermiculite nanosheets (Vm NSs) are used to prepare membrane separators for MFC. A simple and facile method for synthesis of AP membrane without and with Vm NSs concentration of 0.25 mg/mL (0.25 Vm), 0.5 mg/mL (0.5 Vm) and 1 mg/mL (1.0 Vm) is adopted in aqueous phase. The proton mass transfer coefficients of prepared membranes (AP, 0.25 Vm, 0.5 Vm and 1.0 Vm) are respectively 94.4, 134.46, 216.26 and 197.69 % higher than commercially available Nafion membrane. These membranes are tested in three different configurations of MFC: aerated cathode, air cathode and anaerobic dye cathode MFC. Highest current densities of 1515 and 949 mA/m 3 are obtained with 1.0 Vm membrane in aerated and air cathode-MFC respectively while Nafion membrane could produce 623 and 405 mA/m 3 . In anaerobic dye cathode MFC, 0.5 Vm membrane is able to achieve the highest current density of 935 mA/m 3 along with 71 % methyl red decolorization while Nafion membrane produced highest current density of 104 mA/m 3 with 59 % decolorization. Vm NSs augmentation enhances the properties of base AP membrane which can be conveniently used as an alternative to expensive Nafion membrane in the desired configuration of MFC.

Abstract:A new series of supported anion-exchange organic–inorganic hybrid membranes were prepared by quaternizing the copolymer of vinylbenzyl chloride (VBC) and γ-methacryloxypropyl trimethoxy silane (γ-MPS) and then applying a sol–gel reaction to the copolymer and monophenyltriethoxysilane (EPh). The membranes were characterized for potential use in fuel cells. The results show that the physicochemical properties, including ion-exchange property, hydrophilicity, and thermal/chemical stability, can be easily controlled by adjusting the quaternization extent of the copolymer and the dosage of EPh. The hybrid membranes have relatively strong alkali resistance, high temperature tolerance (thermal degradation temperature in air, Td, in the range of 250–300°C), high tensile strength (TS) and elongation at break (Eb). The hydroxyl ion conductivity is in the range of 2.27–4.33×10−4S/cm.
Ion Exchange Membrane Cathodes For Scalable Microbial Fuel Cells

Abstract:One of the main challenges for using microbial fuel cells (MFCs) is developing materials and architectures that are economical and generate high power densities. The performance of two cathodes constructed from two low-cost anion (AEM) and cation (CEM) exchange membranes was compared to that achieved using an ultrafiltration (UF) cathode, when the membranes were made electrically conductive using graphite paint and a nonprecious metal catalyst (CoTMPP). The best performance in single-chamber MFCs using graphite fiber brush anodes was achieved using an AEM cathode with the conductive coating facing the solution, at a catalyst loading of 0.5 mg/cm(2) CoTMPP. The maximum power density was 449 mW/m(2) (normalized to the projected cathode surface area) or 13.1 W/m(3) (total reactor volume), with a Coulombic efficiency up to 70% in a 50 mM phosphate buffer solution (PBS) using acetate. Decreasing the CoTMPP loading by 40-80% reduced power by 28-56%, with only 16% of the power (72 mW/m(2)) generated using an AEM cathode lacking a catalyst. Using a current collector (a stainless steel mesh) pressed against the inside surface of the AEM cathode and 200 mM PBS, the maximum power produced was further increased to 728 mW/m(2) (21.2 W/m(3)). The use of AEM cathodes and brush anodes provides comparable performance to similar systems that use materials costing nearly an order of magnitude more (carbon paper electrodes) and thus represent more useful materials for reducing the costs of MFCs for wastewater treatment applications.

Abstract:A microbial fuel cell (MFC) is a typical bio-electrochemical system for both wastewater treatment and green energy production. The bioanode is a key factor that affects the performance of MFC. In this study, a novel and low-cost carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) coated titanium bioanode (CNPs/Ti) was prepared. Compared with previous candle soot derived CNPs coating method, the present coating method includes further fuel combustion and heat treatment to improve the film adhesion and hydrophilic properties. This CNPs/Ti bioanode not only showed higher surface area and conductivity but also better biocompatibility. After CNPs modification, the maximal power density increased from 0.625 mW m−2 to 616 mW m−2. This power density is also comparable to some carbon materials. Meanwhile, the CNPs/Ti anode was cost-effective. Therefore, this CNPs/Ti composite is a promising anode material in MFCs.

Abstract:Two kinds of Nano-TiO2/PFSA composite membranes (anatase and rutile) were successfully fabricated by the methods of Sol-Gel and Tape-Casting. XRD, FTIR, EDS and AFM were used to study the physical chemistry performances of the self-humidifying composite membranes. Single proton exchange membrane fuel cells were assembled for evaluating the electrochemical performance of the composite membranes. The results indicate that the performances of TiO2/PFSA composite membranes were excellent and stable and the peak power density was more than 1.0 W/cm(2) for dry H-2/dryO(2). The experiment also showed that the crystal structure of TiO2 influenced the performance of the TiO2/PFSA composite membrane with a current density of 2 A/cm(2) for the anatase composite membrane, 0.34 A/cm(2) higher than that of the rutile composite membrane at the conditions of 0.55 V, 70 degrees C, 0.2 MPa, 1.5 stoichiometry and in dry H-2 and dry O-2. Finally, the proton transfer mechanism of composite membrane was discussed.

Abstract:Microbial fuel cells (MFC) are an emerging technology for wastewater treatment that utilizes the metabolism of microorganisms to generate electricity from the organic matter present in water directly. The principle of MFC is the same as hydrogen fuel cell and has three main components (i.e., anode, cathode, and proton exchange membrane). The membrane separates the anode and cathode chambers and keeps the anaerobic and aerobic conditions in the two chambers, respectively. This review paper describes the state-of-the-art membrane materials particularly suited for MFC and discusses the recent development to obtain robust, sustainable, and cost-effective membranes. Nafion 117, Flemion, and Hyflon are the typical commercially available membranes used in MFC. Use of non-fluorinated polymeric membrane materials such as sulfonated silicon dioxide (S-SiO2) in sulfonated polystyrene ethylene butylene polystyrene (SSEBS), sulfonated polyether ether ketone (SPEEK) and graphene oxide sulfonated polyether ether ketone (GO/SPEEK) membranes showed promising output and proved to be an alternative material to Nafion 117. There are many challenges to selecting a suitable membrane for a scaled-up MFC system so that the technology become technically and economically viable.

Abstract:The urgent need for clean and affordable energy solutions to combat energy scarcity and global warming is paramount. Fuel cells, particularly microbial fuel cells (MFCs), offer a promising avenue for sustainable energy production. Proton exchange membranes (PEMs) are critical components in MFCs, but the high cost of Nafion, the gold standard PEM, poses a significant challenge. In this pioneering study, we tried to fabricate PEMs by crafting them from polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), coupled with innovative combinations of potassium thiocyanate (KSCN) and citric acid. The synthesized membranes were studied for their water uptake capacity, ion exchange capacity and potential applications in MFC. The maximum remarkable water uptake capacities of up to 70 % for 10 % KSCN and 64 % for 7.5 % citric acid compositions was observed. Furthermore, these PEMs exhibit ion exchange capacities (IEC) ranging from 0.024 to an impressive 0.69 meq/gm, with the 7.5 % citric acid variant showcasing the highest IEC (0.69 meq/gm). The membranes having better IEC were applied to microbial fuel cell. This results in maximum power density of 50.03 μw/cm 2 , underscoring the tremendous potential these membranes hold as a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional PEMs in MFCs.

Abstract:Alkaline fuel cells suggest solution for the problems of low methanol oxidation kinetics and methanol crossover, which are limiting the development of direct methanol fuel cells. In this work, a novel anion exchange membrane, quaternized poly(aryl ether oxadiazole), was prepared through polycondensation, grafting and quaternization. The ionic conductivity of as-synthesized anion exchange membrane can reach up to 2.79 x 10(-2) S/cm at 70 degrees C. The physical and chemical stability of the anion exchange membranes could also meet the requirement for alkaline direct methanol fuel cells. Copyright (C) 2011, Hydrogen Energy Publications, LLC. Abstract:Proton exchange membranes are an important constituent of microbial fuel cells. The current industry standard, Nafion, suffers from issues related to cost, environmental impact, and operational performance. Alternative membranes have distinct advantages and disadvantages. Based on scale‐up and cost viability as well as performance considerations, sulfonated polyether ether ketone is emerging as the top contender to replace Nafion. The adoption of microbial fuel cell (MFC) technology hinges on the development of efficient proton‐exchange membranes (PEMs), which significantly influences fuel cell performance and cost. PEMs have a critical role in preventing oxygen crossover, maintaining electrochemical neutrality, and supporting microorganisms within MFCs. Nafion, the current industry‐standard PEM, grapples with environmental, cost, and performance issues. Although improvements to Nafion have been reported using additives, immersion in heteropolyacids, different pretreatment methods, and UV irradiation, many of the challenges still remain. Herein, the recent developments in the area of alternative PEMs are reviewed and analyzed. Among them, sulfonated aromatic hydrocarbons, particularly sulfonated polyether ether ketone, have emerged as top contenders in terms of scale up and commercial viability. At the same time, membranes based on polyvinyl alcohol, ionic liquids, and natural materials are also being actively researched for various MFC applications. Since most studies are short term and lab scale, there is a need evaluate long‐term stability and economic cost of PEMs in terms of standardized parameters such as power‐to‐cost and normalized energy recovery. Additionally, for emerging low‐energy‐density MFC applications like biosensors and in vivo power sources, PEM properties and design need to be tailored carefully.
