Abstract:Specific biorecognition is essential for many biological processes, for which highly sensitive and label-free biosensors are strongly demanded. The recently developed metamaterials are a potential choice for biosensing due to their exotic properties. In the current work, a label-free and specific sensor for streptavidin–agarose (SA) was fabricated based on terahertz metamaterial functionlized by octadecanthiols and biotins. Both low and high frequency resonant modes from the metamaterials are found applicable for the detection of SA, and a redshift up to 6.76GHz for the high frequency mode was measured in the undiluted commercial solution. The low frequency mode is attributed to inductor–capacitor (LC) oscillation, while the high frequency mode originates from the plasmonic dipole oscillator, both of which are highly sensitive to the micro-environment change. Adsorption of SA of different concentrations causes different redshifts, and the replacement of high refractive-index substrate with low refractive-index substrate can efficiently promote the sensitivity, well agreeing with the numerical simulation. Moreover, for a particular biomolecule, the sensitivity can be further improved by optimizing the metamaterial design. This method might be very helpful for desirable biorecognition in biology, medicine, and drug industry.

Abstract:Summary form only given. Design and characterization of periodic dielectric or metallic structures such as photonic crystals and plasmonic metamaterials with unique electromagnetic responses have stimulated extensive attention due to the unusual physical phenomena and the potential applications in electromagnetic devices. These artifical materials are based on the original concept of manipulating electromagnetic waves by modulating the permittivity and/or the permeability of the natural materials. With the development of electromagnetic metamaterials, sensors based on plasmonic metamaterials is one of the important topic. In this work, we will discuss new type sensing parameters and its physical meaning based on THz metamaterials. Due to the strong absorption in polar solution such as water, THz sensing applications can not be done in solution. Here, we will demonstrate a self-referenced method based on plasmonic metamaterials to avoid this problem. We will also demonstrate a biospecific sensor based on THz metamaterials.

Abstract:Traditional biological detection methods in practical applications, such as polymerase chain reaction, fluorescence microscopy, flow cytometry and so on, are commonly limited by label needed, high cost, complex operation, low sensitivity. Fortunately, metamaterial-based terahertz (THz) biosensors have shown great potential in label-free, integrated chip and ultra-sensitive sensing due to their advantages in light collection and miniaturization. However, most of THz metamaterial biosensors are based on transmission spectrum measurement, the one-way transmission will lead to the weak interactions between analyte and THz wave, so the sensitivity will be greatly reduced. Here, we proposed a label-free dual-band THz biosensor with ultra-high sensitivity based on metamaterial absorber. The device consists of the asymmetric cross shaped metal metasurface, hollow sensing channel and a back reflector. The simulation results show that the two resonance modes are excited at 0.626 THz and 1.504 THz and the absorptivity is higher than 95%. With the increasing the refractive index of the analyte, the two absorption peaks have obvious red shift. The maximum sensitivities for mode A and mode B are up to 250 GHz/RIU and 630 GHz/RIU, respectively. By simulating the electromagnetic field distribution of the structure, the absorption sensing mechanism is discussed in detail. The proposed THz metamaterial biosensor exhibits promising applications in chemical and biological detection.

Abstract:we demonstrate a high-sensitive and multi-frequency THz measurement on the biomolecules based on a flexible metamaterial. The sensitivity of our proposed biosensor is finally achieved to be around 0.132 GHz/nm that is much higher than other reported results. The tumor molecules arc coated on the metamaterial, and a very large frequency shift is observed, which implies its application in disease detection.

Abstract:Flexible electronic and photonic devices have been demonstrated in the past decade, with significant promise in low-cost, light-weighted, transparent, biocompatible, and portable devices for a wide range of applications. Herein, we demonstrate a flexible metamaterial (Metaflex)-based photonic device operating in the visible-IR regime, which shows potential applications in high sensitivity strain, biological and chemical sensing. The metamaterial structure, consisting of split ring resonators (SRRs) of 30 nm thick Au or Ag, has been fabricated on poly(ethylene naphthalate) substrates with the least line width of ∼30 nm by electron beam lithography. The absorption resonances can be tuned from middle IR to visible range. The Ag U-shaped SRRs metamaterials exhibit an electric resonance of ∼542 nm and a magnetic resonance of ∼756 nm. Both the electric and magnetic resonance modes show highly sensitive responses to out-of-plane bending strain, surrounding dielectric media, and surface chemical environment. Due to the electric and magnetic field coupling, the magnetic response gives a sensitivity as high as 436 nm/RIU. Our Metaflex devices show superior responses with a shift of magnetic resonance of 4.5 nm/nM for nonspecific bovine serum albumin protein binding and 65 nm for a self-assembled monolayer of 2-naphthalenethiol, respectively, suggesting considerable promise in flexible and transparent photonic devices for chemical and biological sensing.

Abstract:Metamaterials are artificial media structured on a size scale smaller than wavelength of external stimuli, and they can exhibit a strong localization and enhancement of fields, which may provide novel tools to significantly enhance the sensitivity and resolution of sensors, and open new degrees of freedom in sensing design aspect. This paper mainly presents the recent progress concerning metamaterials-based sensing, and detailedly reviews the principle, detecting process and sensitivity of three distinct types of sensors based on metamaterials, as well as their challenges and prospects. Moreover, the design guidelines for each sensor and its performance are compared and summarized.

Abstract:To overcome the effect of analyte thickness and limitation of single wavelength sensing, we propose an ultra-sensitive stereo metamaterial biosensor with double resonance frequencies based on coupling electric resonance and magnetic resonance. The electromagnetic analysis demonstrates that the double resonance coupling, induced by the stereo double-layer structure, can significantly improve sensitive biosensing at the terahertz frequency. The results show that by changing the size of the structure, each resonance frequency can be independently tuned in the range of 0.5-1.8 THz and the maximum refractive index sensitivity is 930.4 GHz/RIU. These results have significant implications for the detection of samples with different frequency points. The proposed ultra-sensitive stereo metamaterial structure has excellent potential for application in biomolecule detection and differentiation.

Abstract:Metamaterials have drawn extensive attention for their fine regulation of electromagnetic waves at subwavelength scales. They have abundant electromagnetic modes, and support highly confined and enhanced electromagnetic fields on the surface which are highly sensitive to the surrounding dielectric environment, so they can be used in label-free optical biosensing. Compared with traditional optical biosensors, metamaterial biosensors have many advantages, such as miniaturization, integration, high sensitivity and multi-function customization. The recent progress of metamaterial biosensors in visible light and near infrared, middle infrared, and terahertz spectrums was summarized in this paper, including refractive index biosensing, surface-enhanced Raman scattering, surface-enhanced infrared absorption, and terahertz biosensing.

Abstract:Terahertz (THz) spectroscopy for highly sensitive and selective detection has attracted an increasing recognition. To improve the sensing performance, THz metamaterials were served as signal enhancing devices. However, the interaction between molecules and bulk materials (such as metal and silicon, frequently used in fabricating metamaterials) is simple, which limits the sensing performance. Here we introduce 2D materials into THz sensors, respectively. Through π-π stacking and Van der Waal's force, such 2D materials integrated absorbers show high molecule detection and recognition ability. Also the flexible sensor present strong robustness over bending. The results show that our 2D materials based sensors are flexible, stable, and versatile, suited for a broad range of sensing applications.

Abstract:In the present paper ,the recent progress in terahertz metamaterials-based sensing is reviewed with the principle of metamaterial biosensor ,metamaterial substrate ,and structure design ,respectively .The paper introduces the principle in detail , analyzes the sensitivity of the biosensor with the material and the thickness of the substrate and the structure of metamaterial . The analysis shows that we can enhance the sensitivity and resolution of biosensor by designing specific metamaterial structure , using low dielectric constant and low loss thin substrate ,especially many materials have a specific response in the terahertz fre-quency .So ,there is a large potential application for label-free sensing by using the terahertz metamaterials .This paper also presents the future development of T Hz metamaterial sensors .

Abstract:A terahertz metamaterial sensor for thin film sensing is proposed and investigated by a numerical study. The designed metamaterial sensor consists of an array of back to back c-shaped double-gap resonators, which can be obtained by simple manufacturing processes. By checking the shift of the resonate frequency of the sensor, the thickness of the analytes deposited on the sensor surface can be identified. We analyzed the sensitivities and corresponding quality factors of the sensor excited by two orthogonal polarized terahertz waves individually for both loss-free and lossy coating analyte layers. The electric field distributions of the metamaterial sensor with different analyte thicknesses are analyzed in detail to illustrate the principle of thin film detection and the principle of improving sensitivity. The transmission line model is built to verify the results of the numerical simulation. This study provides a useful reference for the design of biosensors based on metamaterial sensors in the future. (c) 2020 Author(s). Terahertz High-Sensitivity Sensor Design Based on Metamaterial

Abstract:This study proposes a terahertz high-sensitivity sensor with a combined structure of double split-ring resonators and a metal strip as a basic unit. The destructive interference of the electromagnetic waves of the resonance rings and the metal strip with different radiation losses in far field makes the line width of the reflected resonance narrow, showing a typical asymmetric Fano-type reflection spectrum. Moreover, we verify that the quality factor of the tunable sensor can be tuned by changing the coupling distance between the double split-ring resonators and the metal strip through numerical simulations. When the coupling distance is 22 mu m, the quality factor reaches 83. In addition, the sensitivity of the proposed metamaterial sensor to the analyte thickness is studied. The frequency shift exponentially increases as the thickness of the analyte increases and gradually saturates when the thickness exceeds 10 mu m Finally, we also investigate the impact of the analyte with different refractive indices on the proposed sensor. The proposed sensor exhibits extremely high refractive index sensitivity and the figure of merit, i. e. , 171 GHz/RIU and 18. 3, respectively, when the analyte thickness is 22 mu m. This high-sensitivity sensor has extensive application prospects in biochemical detection.

Abstract:To solve the problem of the limited sensitivity, which is due to the poor interaction between the analytes and the localized enhanced electromagnetic field, the terahertz microfluidic sensor based on a metamaterial absorber with the enhanced electromagnetic field interaction is proposed by introducing the microfluidics technology. Owing to the interaction of the sensor and terahertz waves, the magnetic dipole resonances are excited and two significant absorption peaks with the absorption rates over 98% are formed in the range of 0.4 similar to 1.4 THz. Meanwhile, with integrating the microfluidic channel, the interaction between the analytes and the localized enhanced electromagnetic field located in the Fabry-Perot cavity is dramatically enhanced, and the sensor can reach the high sensitivity of 537 GHz/RIU. In addition, the unit cell is designed as the four-fold rotational symmetrical structure, so that the polarization-insensitivitive and the wide range of incident-angle-insensitive properties of the sensor are obtained. The results indicate that the proposed sensor has the characteristics of high sensitivity and polarization-independent, and it exhibits a promising application prospect in the field of label-free trace detection.

Abstract:We report the simulation, fabrication, and experimental characterization of a multichannel metamaterial absorber with the aim to be used as a label-free sensing platform in the terahertz regime. The topology of the investigated resonators deposited on a thin flexible polymer by means of optical lithography is capable of supporting multiple resonances over a broad frequency range due to the individual contribution of each sub-element of the unit cell. In order to explore the performance of the chosen structure in terms of sensing phenomenon, the reflection feature is monitored upon variation of the refractive index and the thickness of the analyte. We achieve numerically maximum frequency sensitivity of about 139.2 GHz/refractive index unit. Measurements carried out using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy show good agreement with the numerical predictions. The results are very promising, suggesting a potential use of the metamaterial absorber in wide variety of multispectral terahertz sensing applications.
Terahertz Biosensing Based on Bi-Layer Metamaterial Absorbers Toward Ultra-High Sensitivity and Simple Fabrication

Abstract:Metamaterial absorbers have proven their ability to sense in the terahertz domain. However, the sensitivity is always limited by the poor spatial overlap between the analyte and the localized enhanced electromagnetic field. Here, we try to tackle this challenge by utilizing an absorber with a bilayer cross-shaped plate-hole structure to ingeniously excite hot-spots covering the analyte. As a result, the sensitivity is significantly improved, theoretically about 7 and 18 times higher than that of the conventional cross-shaped absorber and its complementary cross-shaped absorber, respectively. We then experimentally demonstrate its ability to quantitatively detect biotin with a sensitivity of 153 GHz/μM, higher than that of previously reported biotin sensors. Additionally, the polarization-independent nanostructure decreases the design and fabrication complexity and maintains high reflection at a wide range of incident angles over ±50°. These findings open up opportunities for metamaterial absorbers to realize ultrasensitive biosensing in the fingerprint region of the terahertz regime.

Abstract:An ultra-sensitive THz metamaterial sensor with asymmetric duble-F-shaped metal resonators (ADFSMR) is proposed, and its application in terahertz is analyzed. The sensor achieved perfect narrow-band absorption spectrum at 5.95 THz, with a high Q factor of 49.6. It is ultra-sensitive to the refractive index of the surrounding medium and the thickness variation of the medium. Simulation results show that the sensitivity is 1800 GHz / RIU for analyte with thickness of 5um. Additionally, for a typical biomedical analyte of n = 1.3, the sensitivity was 134 GHz/μm. It has important application in THz high-sensitive biomedical sensor and detector.

Abstract:Terahertz (THz) waves, which fall between microwaves and infrared bands, possess intriguing electromagnetic properties of non-ionizing radiation, low photon energy, being highly sensitive to weak resonances, and non-polar material penetrability. Therefore, THz waves are extremely suitable for sensing and detecting chemical, pharmaceutical, and biological molecules. However, the relatively long wavelength of THz waves (30~3000 μm) compared to the size of analytes (1~100 nm for biomolecules, <10 μm for microorganisms) constrains the development of THz-based sensors. To circumvent this problem, metasurface technology, by engineering subwavelength periodic resonators, has gained a great deal of attention to enhance the resonance response of THz waves. Those metasurface-based THz sensors exhibit high sensitivity for label-free sensing, making them appealing for a variety of applications in security, medical applications, and detection. The performance of metasurface-based THz sensors is controlled by geometric structure and material parameters. The operating mechanism is divided into two main categories, passive and active. To have a profound understanding of these metasurface-assisted THz sensing technologies, we review and categorize those THz sensors, based on their operating mechanisms, including resonators for frequency shift sensing, nanogaps for enhanced field confinement, chirality for handedness detection, and active elements (such as graphene and MEMS) for advanced tunable sensing. This comprehensive review can serve as a guideline for future metasurfaces design to assist THz sensing and detection.

Abstract:Abstract As a promising candidate for rapid and ultrasensitive sensing of biomolecules, terahertz time‐domain spectroscopy (THz‐TDS) can be considered with superior performance in label‐free, noncontact, noninvasive, and nondestructive detection. In particular, almost significant conformational information can be captured with THz‐TDS. Meanwhile, terahertz (THz) metamaterial or metasurface biosensing chips based on THz‐TDS were proposed to promote the detection sensitivity within strong local field‐matter enhancement. In this paper, the ultrasensitive THz biosensing metamaterial and metasurface for DNA/RNA detecting based on spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SSPPs) is probed. The simulated results show that the maximum frequency sensitivity of the proposed metamaterial and metasurface for DNA/RNA biosensing can respectively approach to 2.52 THz/refractive index unit (RIU) and 2.23 THz/RIU. In addition, the film thickness sensitivities of metamaterial and metasurface biosensors are respectively higher than 71.1 GHz/μm and 79.2 GHz/μm when the thickness of biomaterial is thinner than 4 μm. All these ascendant performances achieved in the proposed metamaterial and metasurface biosensors can be realized and exploited for ultrasensitive biomolecules detection, health monitoring, medical film sensing, and safety inspection in THz regime.
