Abstract:Terahertz (THz) spectroscopy has unique sensing capabilities for biological cells due to its high temporal resolution and label-free characteristics. By combining THz technologies with the local enhancement effects of the electric field induced by the metasurface, high sensitivity detection of biological analytes can be achieved. In this work, an ultrasensitive THz metasurface biosensor based on Parity-time (PT) symmetry is proposed. Consisting of a cut wire and a pair of split ring resonators, the exceptional point structure in PT symmetry can realize a balance between the gain and the loss, which leads to a high detection sensitivity. The simulation shows that the proposed biosensor can reach a sensitivity as high as 584 GHz/RIU at the exceptional point with polarization-insensitive stability across a ±35° angle range. Experimentally, the biosensor achieves a sensitivity up to 1030.51 kHz/ (cell/mL-1) in detecting different biological cells. Principal component analysis is used to reduce the dimensionality of features composed of frequency shifts and peak amplitudes. A random forest model is then used to classify the processed features and achieves a 98.9% identification accuracy. The proposed biosensor demonstrates capabilities of highly sensitive detection of cancer cells, providing an effective and rapid method for early cancer screening, grading, and staging.

Abstract:we demonstrate a high-sensitive and multi-frequency THz measurement on the biomolecules based on a flexible metamaterial. The sensitivity of our proposed biosensor is finally achieved to be around 0.132 GHz/nm that is much higher than other reported results. The tumor molecules arc coated on the metamaterial, and a very large frequency shift is observed, which implies its application in disease detection.

Abstract:To overcome the effect of analyte thickness and limitation of single wavelength sensing, we propose an ultra-sensitive stereo metamaterial biosensor with double resonance frequencies based on coupling electric resonance and magnetic resonance. The electromagnetic analysis demonstrates that the double resonance coupling, induced by the stereo double-layer structure, can significantly improve sensitive biosensing at the terahertz frequency. The results show that by changing the size of the structure, each resonance frequency can be independently tuned in the range of 0.5-1.8 THz and the maximum refractive index sensitivity is 930.4 GHz/RIU. These results have significant implications for the detection of samples with different frequency points. The proposed ultra-sensitive stereo metamaterial structure has excellent potential for application in biomolecule detection and differentiation.
Terahertz ultrasensitive biosensing metamaterial and metasurface based on spoof surface plasmon polaritons

Abstract:Abstract As a promising candidate for rapid and ultrasensitive sensing of biomolecules, terahertz time‐domain spectroscopy (THz‐TDS) can be considered with superior performance in label‐free, noncontact, noninvasive, and nondestructive detection. In particular, almost significant conformational information can be captured with THz‐TDS. Meanwhile, terahertz (THz) metamaterial or metasurface biosensing chips based on THz‐TDS were proposed to promote the detection sensitivity within strong local field‐matter enhancement. In this paper, the ultrasensitive THz biosensing metamaterial and metasurface for DNA/RNA detecting based on spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SSPPs) is probed. The simulated results show that the maximum frequency sensitivity of the proposed metamaterial and metasurface for DNA/RNA biosensing can respectively approach to 2.52 THz/refractive index unit (RIU) and 2.23 THz/RIU. In addition, the film thickness sensitivities of metamaterial and metasurface biosensors are respectively higher than 71.1 GHz/μm and 79.2 GHz/μm when the thickness of biomaterial is thinner than 4 μm. All these ascendant performances achieved in the proposed metamaterial and metasurface biosensors can be realized and exploited for ultrasensitive biomolecules detection, health monitoring, medical film sensing, and safety inspection in THz regime.

High sensitivity terahertz metamaterial biosensor based on multilayer SiO2-Ag

Abstract:A simple method compatible with all geometrical structures of terahertz metamaterials for enhancing the tunability, sensitivity, Q-factor, and figure of merit (FOM) is proposed. This method uses a multi-layer SiO2:Ag to approach the floating-like double split ring resonators. The terahertz metamaterial consists of five layers of SiO2:Ag, in which each layer of SiO2:Ag comprises a 250-nm-thick SiO2 layer and a 50-nm-thick Ag layer. The tunability, sensitivity, Q-factor, and figure of merit (FOM) of metamaterial can be increased with increasing the number of layers of SiO2:Ag. Metamaterial with multi-layer SiO2-Ag has a larger tunability, sensitivity, Q-factor, and figure of merit (FOM) than the common metamaterial based on a single metal layer. The multi-layer metamaterial is an excellent achievement in developing biomolecule biosensors and can potentially sense dangerous viruses.

Abstract:We demonstrate a very strong magnetic resonance in metamaterials for high-performance sensing. The metamaterials comprise a periodic array of a pair of closely spaced metal nanodisks that are placed on metal substrate. The strong magnetic resonance is essentially an antisymmetric resonant mode resulting from the near-field plasmon hybridization within the pair of metal nanodisks. Because the magnetic resonance has great electromagnetic field enhancement, ultra-narrow bandwidth and nearly perfect absorption, the metamaterials have very high sensitivity (S = 991 nm/RIU, S*= 47/RIU) and figure of merit (FOM = 124, FOM* = 17 702), which may find potential applications in label-free biosensing. Abstract:In this paper, a terahertz metamaterial biosensor based on the resonant structure of the open square ring is designed, and its simulation and testing are carried out to reveal the absorbing performance and sensing performance of the sensor. The results show that the sensor can produce an extremely narrow absorption peak (absorption of 98.7%) at the resonant frequency of 0.635 THz and a half-wave width of 8.02 GHz. The best absorbance was obtained when the analyte thickness was 30 μm and the opening width was 10 μm. Under that condition, the absorption peak of the sensor showed an apparent redshift as the analyte’s refractive index increased from 1.0 to 1.8. Additionally, the sensor quality factor is 79.26, and the sensitivity is 91.5 GHz/refractive index unit (RIU). Furthermore, the sensor is prepared by UV lithography and tested. It is found that the sensor is highly sensitive to the object with a small refractive index difference and has good sensing performance. The above analysis shows that the terahertz metamaterial biosensor based on the open square ring structure prepared in this study has the advantages of simple structure, high-quality factor, and high refractive index sensitivity. Abstract:We present and demonstrate a MEMS-based tunable terahertz metamaterial (TTM) composed of inner triadius and outer electric split-ring resonator (eSRR) structures. With the aim to explore the electromagnetic responses of TTM device, different geometrical parameters are compared and discussed to optimize the suitable TTM design, including the length, radius, and height of TTM device. The height of triadius structure could be changed by using MEMS technique to perform active tunability. TTM shows the polarization-dependent and electromagnetic induced transparency (EIT) characteristics owing to the eSRR configuration. The electromagnetic responses of TTM exhibit tunable characteristics in resonance, polarization-dependent, and electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). By properly tailoring the length and height of the inner triadius structure and the radius of the outer eSRR structure, the corresponding resonance tuning range reaches 0.32 THz. In addition to the above optical characteristics of TTM, we further investigate its potential application in a refraction index sensor. TTM is exposed on the surrounding ambient with different refraction indexes. The corresponding key sensing performances, such as figure of merit (FOM), sensitivity (S), and quality factor (Q-factor) values, are calculated and discussed, respectively. The calculated sensitivity of TTM is 0.379 THz/RIU, while the average values of Q-factor and FOM are 66.01 and 63.83, respectively. These characteristics indicate that the presented MEMS-based TTM device could be widely used in tunable filters, perfect absorbers, high-efficient environmental sensors, and optical switches applications for THz-wave optoelectronics.

Abstract:In this work, we propose a THz metamaterial for biomedical applications. The full vectorial finite element method is used to design and analyze the reported biosensor. The proposed sensor is based on increasing the confinement of the electric and magnetic fields at the analyte layer at the resonance frequency. Hence, any slight variation of the optical properties of the analyte sample (typically the refractive index) can be detected. We demonstrate the potential of using the reported sensor for hemoglobin (Hb) concentration and early cancer detection. The geometrical parameters are studied to maximize the sensor sensitivity of the symmetric and asymmetric designs. An absorptivity of 0.98 is achieved at 1.1 THz, which depends on the analyte sample refractive index High sensor sensitivity of 1.08 GHz/g/dL is obtained with high Q-factor of 13.2 and FWHM (full width at half maximum) of 140 GHz through hemoglobin (Hb) concentration change from 5 g/dL to 20 g/dL. Further, an average sensitivity of 556.325 GHz/RIU is realized for cancer early detection for basal cell, breast cell, Jurkat cell and Cervical cell. Therefore, the proposed design is a good candidate for biomedical applications.

Abstract:In this paper, the ‘terahertz gap’ has been addressed by designing a novel THz metasurface for potential use in biosensing applications. The metasurface sensor employs Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR). It operates in the 0 - 1 THz band. Two sharp reflection dips are provided by the sensor, which serve as indicators of analyte refractive index variations. Geometrical as well as compositional parameters of the biosensor design have been studied to optimize the performance in the targeted frequency band. The sensor design shows compatibility with different metals. The performance of the metasurface with gold, copper and aluminum has been investigated. The metasurface geometry is decently resilient to fabrication tolerances. The sensor maintains its resonance conditions when the angle of incidence is changed with minor deviations in the spectral response, but the polarization state of the incident terahertz beam clearly disturbs the absorption peak. Therefore, the sensing performance is restricted to a maximum allowable incidence angle of 20 degrees and circularly polarized terahertz beams. The resonance conditions for the metasurface appear around 0.4 and 0.7 THz. Both resonances have been investigated with respect to changes in the analyte refractive index. The chosen refractive index range is 1 to 1.5. The sensor response is calibrated by plotting the resonance frequency versus the refractive index. Least squares regression technique has been used to extract a data model for sensor response. Comparison of the proposed design with contemporary works has been incorporated into the paper. The sensor provides sensitivities of 0.1614 THz/ RIU and 0.23 THz/ RIU. The electromagnetic simulations have been carried out through the Finite Element Method (FEM).

Abstract:Electrical dipole resonances typically have low Q factor and broad resonant linewidth caused by strong free-space coupling with high radiative loss. Here, we present a strategy for enhancing the Q factor of the electrical resonance via the interference of a toroidal dipole. To validate such a strategy, a metasurface consisting of two resonators is designed that responsible to the electric and toroidal dipoles. According to constructive and destructive hybridizations of the two dipole modes, enhanced and decreased Q factors are found respectively for the two hybrid modes, compared to the one for the conventional electric dipole resonance. As a practical application of such high Q resonance, we further experimentally investigate the sensing performance of the metasurface biosensor by detecting the cell concentration of lung cancer cells (type A549). Moreover, through monitoring both resonance frequency and amplitude variation of the metasurface biosensor, the dielectric permittivity of the lung cancer cells is delicately estimated by the conjoint analysis of both simulated and measured results. Our proposed metasurface paves a promising way for the study of multipole interference in the field of nanophotonics and validates its effectiveness in biomedical sensing.

Abstract:Optical biosensors are the devices converting biological signals into light signals, for quantitative and classification detection. In recent years, metasurfaces combined with terahertz time-domain spectroscopy have been applied in various biosensing field like medical sensing, and food monitoring. However, current meta-sensors face the problems of complex structures and insufficient sensitivity, and target molecules categories are limited. Therefore, we proposed a meta-sensor with both reliable fabrication, simple structure and high sensing performance. Here, the metasurface is fabricated on both rigid and flexible film, the effect of substrate on sensing performance is the first time to be discussed experimentally. We established a novel relationship between analyte (cancer cell, doxycycline hydrochloride) to resonance, and the sensing results are comprehensive and well-performed. In experiments, an obvious frequency shift of 110 GHz occurs when DCH concentration increased from 0.1 to 16 mg/ml. And the practical sensitivity reaches up to 166.67 kHz·mm2/cell for the human prostatic cancer cell DU-145, and 116.67 kHz·mm2/cell for human bladder cancer cell 5637, respectively. The proposed meta-sensor, with advantages of no-label, high Q-factor and reliable performance, not only validates the effectiveness of refractive index sensing, but also provides a significant reference for high-performance terahertz sensors in biological sensing applications.

Abstract:In recent years, bound states in the continuum (BICs) have attracted attention of researchers because they are located above the light cone without leakage and have infinite lifetimes. In this study, we propose and examine a plasmonic metasurface based on BICs, design and fabricate a unit cell with an open ring, breaking the symmetry to excite Fano resonance by changing the position of an open gap. The surface current and electromagnetic field distribution were further analyzed, the internal physical mechanism was studied, and a significant near-field enhancement effect of the electromagnetic field was obtained. The simulation results show that when the analyte thickness reaches 30 , the refractive index sensitivity of the proposed metasurface can reach 265.06 GHz/RIU. The designed terahertz metasurface is easy and inexpensive to fabricate, and is widely applicable as a nonlinear metamaterial in the fields of biosensing or imaging.

Abstract:Designing terahertz sensors with high sensitivity to detect nanoscale thin films and single biomolecule presents a significant challenge, and addressing these obstacles is crucial for unlocking their full potential in scientific research and advanced applications. This work presents a strategy for the design optimization of metamaterial sensors employed in the detection of small amounts of dielectric materials. The sensors usually utilize the shift of the resonance frequency as an indicator of the presence of the analyte. The amount of shifting depends on intrinsic properties (electric field distribution, quality factor, and mode volume) of the bare cavity, as well as the overlap volume of its high-electric-field zone(s) and the analyte. Guided by the simplified dielectric perturbation theory, interdigitated electric split-ring resonators (ID-eSRR) are devised to significantly enhance the detection sensitivity for thin-film analytes compared to eSRRs without interdigitated fingers in the SRR gap region. The fingers of the ID-eSRR metamaterial sensor redistribute the electric field, creating strongly localized field enhancements that substantially boost the interaction with the analyte. Additionally, the periodic change of the orientation of the inherent anti-phase electric field in the interdigitated structure reduces radiation loss, leading to a higher Q-factor. Experiments with e-beam-fabricated ID-eSRR sensors operating at around 300 GHz demonstrate a remarkable frequency shift of 33.5 GHz upon deposition of a SiO2 layer with a thickness of 150 nm as an analyte simulant. The figure of merit (FOM) improves by over 50 times compared to structures without interdigitated fingers. This rational design option opens a promising avenue for highly sensitive detection of thin films and trace biomolecules.

Dual-band terahertz metamaterial sensor and its sensing capacity enhanced with a central-relief design

Abstract:In this paper, a dual-band terahertz metamaterial sensor based on aluminum and silicon is proposed and simulated. The aluminum surface, which is deposited on a silicon substrate, is made of a C-shaped frame resonator, a rectangular beam, and a cross. The device is insensitive to the change of incident angle in the range of 0°-30°, which shows the great transmission stability of the sensor. By examining the resonance frequency shift, it is shown that 98.3 and 237.5 GHz/RIU refractive index sensitivity can be obtained near 1.76 and 2.404 THz transmission dips of the proposed structure, respectively. The two dips can be used to sense analytes in different refractive index ranges, respectively. For Dip 1 at 1.76 THz, the range is 1.0-1.6. For Dip 2 at 2.404 THz, the range is 1.6-2.0. Different from traditional multi-band metamaterial sensors, two dips generated by the proposed device can measure continuous and non-multiplexed refractive index ranges, respectively. Because the resonance frequencies of matters are different, such a characteristic enables the device to measure different types of analyte using the appropriate resonant peak. A central-relief design is then proposed based on perturbation theory to further improve its sensing performance. The aluminum cross is covered by polyimide, which can interfere with the scattering field on the metal surface and affect the transmission results. For both transmission dips, the optimized structure realizes higher sensitivities of 111.7 GHz/RIU and 262.5 GHz/RIU, respectively. More significantly, the optimized structure also has the characteristic of a wide and non-multiplexed refractive index range. In addition, the effects of analyte thickness and polyimide layer thickness on sensor performance are also discussed. The proposed structure opens up new prospects in the design of multiple-band terahertz metamaterial sensors. It can also meet the sensing needs of biomedical, environmental monitoring, and industrial manufacturing.

Abstract:An ultra-high sensitive metamaterials absorption sensor based on centrosymmetric double F-shaped metal resonators (CDFMR) is proposed, and its application in terahertz is analyzed. The sensor achieved perfect narrow-band absorption spectrum at 5.92 THz, with a high Q factor of 49.6. The resonance frequency is sensitive to the refractive index of the surface analyte, ultra-high sensitivity of 1,800 GHz/RIU and Fom value of 15 have been achieved. In addition, with a typical biomedical analyte of <i>n</i> = 1.3, the thickness sensitivity is 134 GHz/μm. It has important application in THz ultrasensitive biomedical sensor and detector.

Abstract:Optical sensing is crucial in many applications and has received widespread attention in recent years. Transmission spectroscopy with narrow linewidth resonances is indispensable for improving metasurface sensing performance. However, the narrower linewidth results in a smaller resonant modulation range, which seriously hinders the application of metasurfaces in sensing detection. We designed an all-silicon metasurface sensor. The structural layer of the metasurface works together with the substrate layer. Multiple magnetic ring dipoles are generated in the structural layer and multiple magnetic dipoles are generated in the substrate layer. The two work together to stimulate sharp Fano resonance, with a quality factor of up to 272.84. Based on the characteristics of metasurface, when applied to sensing and detection, the theoretical sensitivity can reach 59.64 GHz/RIU. Metasurface samples were successfully prepared using photolithography and dry etching. After characterizing the transmission spectrum of the prepared metasurface, the actual quality factor reached 76.8. At the same time, the metasurface sensor was used to detect bovine serum albumin (BSA) solutions of different concentrations. Based on the test results, it is calculated that the detection limit of the metasurface sensor for detecting BSA can reach 0.027 mg/mL, and the detection sensitivity can reach 9.7 GHz/(ng/mm 2 ). The results of theoretical simulation and biological experiments show that the sensor has good sensing performance. This work is of great significance to the research of all-silicon metasurfaces and the application of metasurface sensors.

Quasi-BIC Resonance in Terahertz Metasurface for Sensing Application

Abstract:The terahertz (THz) metasurface based on the bound states in the continuum (BIC) provides a promising platform for various applications by overcoming the weak interaction between the THz waves and the trace analyte. In this work, a metasurface with a high Q-factor resonance based on split ring resonators (SRRs) metamolecules is proposed. Multiple quasi-BIC resonances in the range of $1\sim 1.5 \mathrm{THz}$ are excited on the metasurface, through different arrangements in the $2 \times 2$ array of SRRs with different angles. The temporal coupled mode theory (TCMT) and the multipole expansion of far-field scattering power are employed to explain the physical mechanism of quasi-BIC. The sensing of glucose solution in the concentration range of 1 ppm to 100 ppm is achieved experimentally by combining it with the microfluidic chip. Moreover, a permittivity retrieval method based on grating-assisted BIC metasurface is proposed. Our researches offer a possible strategy for achieving multiple quasi-BIC resonances on the metasurface and provide a potential candidate for sensing and spectral analysis of the biochemical in the THz frequency band.
