Abstract:Gibbs–Duhem equation is one of the fundamental equations in thermodynamics, which describes the relation among changes in temperature, pressure and chemical potential. Thermodynamic system can be affected by external field, and this effect should be revealed by thermodynamic equations. Based on energy postulate and the first law of thermodynamics, the differential equation of internal energy is extended to include the properties of external fields. Then, with homogeneous function theorem and a redefinition of Gibbs energy, a generalized Gibbs–Duhem equation with influences of external fields is derived. As a demonstration of the application of this generalized equation, the influences of temperature and external electric field on surface tension, surface adsorption controlled by external electric field, and the derivation of a generalized chemical potential expression are discussed, which show that the extended Gibbs–Duhem equation developed in this paper is capable to capture the influences of external fields on a thermodynamic system.

Abstract:The continuum thermodynamics is one of the foundations of the continuum mechanics. In this paper some modifications in thermodynamics and their applications will be given. It is found that the first law of thermodynamics includes energy conservation law and physical variational principle. The physical variational principle is also a basic physical law and can be used to derive the governing equations in mechanics and physics. The accelerative variation of the temperature needs the extra heat which will produce the inertial entropy. Applying the inertial entropy theory the temperature wave equation with finite phase velocity is obtained.

Abstract:Many transport and rate processes in chemical, physical, mineral, material and biological fields are controlled by the coupled chemo-electro-thermo-mechanical (CETM) process. Though many literatures discussed these coupled problems, but a unified rigorous theory and a unified method based on the chemical thermodynamics are lacked. In this paper on the basis of electrochemistry, the non-equilibrium thermodynamics and modern continuum mechanics we modify some previous theories and give a general theory including mass conservation equation, the electric charge conservation equation, complete energy conservation equation, entropy equation, evolution equations and the complete governing equations of these couple CETM systems. An extension of Nernst–Planck equation is derived for the CETM system. This theory gives a theoretical foundation and a universal method to improve and develop engineering theories, especially for the gradual failure components and cells. In appendix we also discuss the interdiffusion problems in solids with vacancies shortly as a complement of the continuum diffusion.

Abstract:A transient chemomechanical coupling formulation for solid continuum is presented. The second-order rate and the characterized time are introduced to include the transient effect through Taylor expansion. The transient Reynold's transport theorem is derived with the new products or material elimination considered. Based on conservation laws and the second law of thermodynamic, we state a consistent Helmholtz-energy-based framework. The transient field equations take mechanical and chemical contributions and microscopic time into account. Either microscopic time or chemical reactions leads to the unsymmetry of the stress tensor. The relationship of Helmholtz energy and constitutive properties, the evolution equations, and the entropy are consistent with the classical continuum thermodynamics and the constitutive theory in continuum mechanics. Further, the transient equations of thermal conduction and diffusion with finite velocity are naturally derived rather than postulated, and a comparison with the existing theories is discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, the chemical Gibbs function variational principle, the Helmholtz function variational principle and the internal energy variational principle based on irreversible thermodynamics are proposed for the thermal–chemical–mechanical fully coupling problems. The complete fully coupling governing equations, including the heat conduction, mass diffusion and chemical reactions, are derived from the variational principles. The convective effect can also be derived in the diffusion and energy equations from the variational principles naturally. Moreover, the concentrations and entropy jump conditions on the moving interface between the products due to chemical reactions and the matrix can be derived from the variational principles naturally. This work provides the basis for the analyses and computations of thermochemomechanical coupling problems.

Abstract:Maxwell equal area law is an important and traditional analytical tool in thermodynamic phase transition, especially in the calculation of gas-liquid phase transition, which reconciles the theoretical calculation with the experimental results. Undoubtedly, its importance is also self-evident for the black hole thermodynamic system. In this study, we construct a generalized Maxwell equal area law, which allows different states of thermodynamic systems to be within the generalized free energy. The black hole thermodynamic characteristics are spontaneously emerged in the free energy landscape. Furthermore, by analytic continuation, we utilize the properties of analytical functions to investigate some universal characteristics of thermodynamic phase transitions in black holes, and preliminarily establish the counterpart of thermodynamic phase transitions in the complex domain.

A continuum theory of thermoelectric bodies and effective properties of thermoelectric composites

Abstract:We develop a continuum theory for thermoelectric bodies following the framework of continuum mechanics and conforming to general principles of thermodynamics. For steady states, the governing equations for local fields are intrinsically nonlinear. However, under conditions of small variations of electrochemical potential, temperature and their gradients, the governing equations may be reduced to a linear elliptic system, which can be conveniently solved to determine behaviors of thermoelectric bodies. The linear theory is further applied to predict effective properties of thermoelectric composites. In particular, explicit formula of effective properties are obtained for simple microstructures of laminates and periodic E-inclusions, which implies useful design principles for engineering thermoelectric composites.

Abstract:Contact lines arise as the boundaries of free boundaries in fluids. This problem is interesting and important, not only because it arises in many applications, but also because of the distinct mathematical and physical features it has, such as singularities, hysteresis, instabilities, competing scaling regimes, etc. For a long time, this area of study was plagued with conflicting theories and uncertainties regarding how the problem should be modeled. In the present paper we illustrate how continuum models for the moving contact line problem can be derived using simple thermodynamic considerations. Both the sharp interface models and diffuse interface models are derived.

Abstract:The first thermodynamic law contains a universal thermodynamic variational principle. The complete internal energy variational principle in the electroelastic analysis is not discussed in previous papers. In this paper this principle will be discussed. From this principle the simple complete governing equations can be deduced, and the Maxwell stress can be naturally derived from this variational principle. It is shown that the Maxwell stress has slightly different forms determined by using internal energy or electric Gibbs free energy variational principle, but substantially they are the same. In the second-order precision the Maxwell stress is uniquely determined, and its expression has the same form for all deformable and rigid dielectrics. The electroelastic analyses in the dielectric should be studied together with its environment, because the electric field exists in all materials except the ideal conductor. The complete governing equations under finite deformation in the initial configuration are also discussed.

Heat is the sum of kinetic energy, system work, and system potential of gas, while force is the linear gradients of heat variation. Exporters and importers of force are evident in terms of exotherm and endotherm. Temperature and volume gradients create asymmetric forces driving rotation and spin (self-rotation). It verifies that force transfer doesn’t need a medium. As an outstanding achievement, a succinct and general equation is derived to predict the equilibrium distance of molecular interaction: L_e=∛((3π^(α-1) m_A g)/(4N_A kT)), without using any assumption, such as van der Waals force and dispersion force. In addition, the origins and attributes of repulsion and attraction are disclosed. Predicting results is applausive. For example, at 298 K, Le for N2, O2, and CH4 are 3.11, 3.11, and 3.68 Å, comparable to the data adopted in MD simulations of the literature. Furthermore, electrons are regarded as electro-neutral particles to build the atom structure. It is consistent with the quantum predictions. The first ionization energies of elements reported in the references are found to be close to the kinetic energies calculated in this paper.

Abstract:Based on definition of chemical potential,and the first law and the second law of thermodynamics, the basic equations of chemo-mechanical coupling problem are investigated in the present paper.The constitu- tive equations are established by using Helmholtz free energy and then the governing equations are obtained by applying integration by parts to energy functional.It is indicated that the chemo-mechanical coupling system is closed.To build the finite element formulations of the coupling problem,an equivalent integration form of the governing equations is derived from the weighted residual method.This investigation can contribute to understanding the coupling mechanism of chemical and mechanical behavior.

Abstract:This paper offers an informal instructive introduction to some of the main notions of geometric continuum mechanics for the case of smooth fields. We use a metric invariant stress theory of continuum mechanics to formulate a simple generalization of the fields of electrodynamics and Maxwell's equations to general differentiable manifolds of any dimension, thus viewing generalized electrodynamics as a special case of continuum mechanics. The basic kinematic variable is the potential, which is represented as a $p$-form in an $n$-dimensional spacetime. The stress for the case of generalized electrodynamics is assumed to be represented by an $(n-p-1)$-form, a generalization of the Maxwell $2$-form.

Abstract:The generalized Gibbs free energy and enthalpy is derived in the framework of nonextensive thermodynamics by using the so-called physical temperature and the physical pressure. Some thermodynamical relations are studied by considering the difference between the physical temperature and the inverse of Lagrange multiplier. The thermodynamical relation between the heat capacities at a constant volume and at a constant pressure is obtained using the generalized thermodynamical potential, which is found to be different from the traditional one in Gibbs thermodynamics. But, the expressions for the heat capacities using the generalized thermodynamical potentials are unchanged.

Abstract:<p>Thermodynamics is a science concerning the state of a system, whether it is stable, metastable or unstable, when interacting with the surroundings. In this overview, fundamentals of thermodynamics are briefly reviewed through the integration of first and second laws of thermodynamics for open and nonequilibrium systems to demonstrate that the reversible equilibrium and irreversible nonequilibrium thermodynamics can be integrated to enhance the power and utilities of thermodynamics. The recent progresses in computational thermodynamics, the remaining challenges, and potential impacts in broad scientific fields are discussed. It is shown that computational thermodynamics enables the modeling of thermodynamics of a state as a function of both external and internal variables and enables quantitative calculations of a broad range of properties of a multicomponent system in terms of first and second derivatives of energy, including not only equilibrium states when there are no driving forces for any internal processes and but also non-equilibrium states with driving forces for internal processes. Consequently, external constraints such as fixed strain and internal degree of freedoms such as ordering and defects can be described in a coherent framework and applied to materials design. Furthermore, two important but largely overlooked aspects in thermodynamics will be discussed, i.e. the rigorous application of statistical thermodynamics with the probability of configurations and their contributions to system properties, and the applications of second derivatives of energy with respect to either two extensive variables or two potentials or a mixture of them in terms of understanding and predicting emergent behaviors, critical phenomena, kinetic coefficients, and mechanical properties.</p>

Some Variational Principles in Elastic Dielectric and Elastic Magnetic Materials

Abstract:The electroelastic and magnetoelastic analyses in the dielectric and magnetic materials should be studied together with their environments. From the first thermodynamic law a general variational theory is proposed. Some nonlinear variational principles with electric or magnetic Gibbs free energy and the complete governing equations, derived from these principles are given in this paper. The governing equations are complete and useful in engineering. It is noted that the virtual displacements do not only produce the variation of the strain, but also produce the variation of electric potential or magnetic potential. It is also noted that even in a small deformation the effect of the volume change on the electromagnetic field cannot be neglected. Just due to these two reasons the Maxwell stress can be naturally derived from the variational equation and it is unique. In these derivations new elctrostrictive and magnetostrictive coefficients are introduced and the anti-symmetric part of the stress can be naturally got. These principles are also useful for computational mechanics.

Abstract:We reconsider the thermodynamics of anti-de Sitter black holes in the context of gauge-gravity duality. In this new setting, where both the cosmological constant Λ and the gravitational Newton's constant G are varied in the bulk, we rewrite the first law in a new form containing both Λ (associated with thermodynamic pressure) and the central charge C of the dual conformal field theory and their conjugate variables. We obtain a novel thermodynamic volume, in turn leading to a new understanding of the Van der Waals behavior of charged anti-de Sitter black holes in which phase changes are governed by the degrees of freedom in the conformal field theory. Compared to the "old" P-V criticality, this new criticality is "universal" (independent of the bulk pressure) and directly relates to the thermodynamics of the dual field theory and its central charge.
