Abstract:Some of the previous theories in the electrostrictive and magnetostrictive materials and their differences are discussed in this paper. A variational principle in the general thermodynamic sense is given and the governing equations can be derived from this principle. Illustrational examples are given.

Abstract:The electroelastic and magnetoelastic analyses in the dielectric and magnetic materials should be studied together with their environments. From the first thermodynamic law a general variational theory is proposed. Some nonlinear variational principles with electric or magnetic Gibbs free energy and the complete governing equations, derived from these principles are given in this paper. The governing equations are complete and useful in engineering. It is noted that the virtual displacements do not only produce the variation of the strain, but also produce the variation of electric potential or magnetic potential. It is also noted that even in a small deformation the effect of the volume change on the electromagnetic field cannot be neglected. Just due to these two reasons the Maxwell stress can be naturally derived from the variational equation and it is unique. In these derivations new elctrostrictive and magnetostrictive coefficients are introduced and the anti-symmetric part of the stress can be naturally got. These principles are also useful for computational mechanics.

Abstract:Two fundamental theories are discussed in this paper. In the nonlinear electro–magneto–elastic analysis, different authors give different formulas. It means that the fundamental theory should still be studied. In this paper, we give a review of different theories and extend the physical variational principle to the material with electromagnetic body couple. For the temperature wave, we compare the inertial entropy theory and the Cattaneo–Vernotte’s theory in detail and show that the former is more appropriate. These theories may be interesting and need further research.

Abstract:The phenomenon of magnetostriction and its fundamental are presented briefly, and developmental history of Magnetostrictive Materials are reviewed and summarized. The current application research of REFe2 Giant Magnetostrictive Materials(GMM) in various fields in China and west are systematically introduced, especially the applications in mechatronics engineerings. The principle and structure of these devices are proposed, and their performances are also stated. The application of GMM in future is also discussed.

Abstract:Electrostrictive materials convert electrical energy into mechanical energy and vice versa. They are extensive applied as intelligent materials in the engineering structures. The governing equations in electrostrictive media under the quasistatic electric field are very important for the measurement of material constants and the research on the strength and function. But some theoretical problems should be further clarified. In this paper, the electric force acting on the material is studied and the complete governing equations will be given. In this paper a possible method to measure electrostrictive coefficients is also discussed.

Abstract:Smart adaptive structures and structronic systems have been increasingly investigated and developed in the last two decades. Although smart structures made of piezoelectrics, shape-memory materials, electrostrictive materials, and electro-/magnetorheological fluids have been evaluated extensively, studies of magnetostrictive continua, especially generic mathematical model(s), are still relatively scarce. This study is to develop a generic mathematical model for adaptive and controllable magnetostrictive thin shells. Starting with fundamental constitutive magnetostrictive relations, both elastic and magnetostrictive stresses, forces, and moments of a generic double-curvature magnetostrictive shell continuum subject to small and moderate magnetic fields are defined. Dynamic magnetomechanical system equations and permissible boundary conditions are defined using Hamilton's principle, elasticity theory, Kirchhoff-Love thin shell theory and the Gibb's free energy function. Magnetomechanical behavior and dynamic characteristics of magnetostrictive shells are evaluated. Simplifications of magnetostrictive shell theory to other common geometries are demonstrated and magnetostrictive/dynamic coupling and actuation characteristics are discussed.

Abstract:Electrostrictive material is one of the key smart materials, with tremendous potentials in many engineering applications, e.g., sonar, actuators, artificial muscles, etc. The (direct) electrostrictive effect of electrostrictive materials is a quadratic dependence of stress or strain on applied electric field and this nonlinear electromechanical effect contributes significant actuation performance as compared with that of conventional piezoelectric materials. A generic electrostrictive thin shell theory and its dynamic electro-mechanical system equations are derived based on a generic double-curvature thin shell defined in the paraelectric phase. Generic mathematical models and permissible boundary conditions of electrostrictive thin shells are defined based on Hamilton’s principle, elasticity theory, Kirchhoff-Love thin shell theory and Gibbs elastic free energy function. Electro-mechanical behaviors and dynamic characteristics of electrostrictive shells are evaluated. Abstract:This paper is concerned with a 3-D general constitutive law of non-linear magneto-thermo-elastic coupling for magnetostrictive materials. The model considered here is thermodynamically motivated and based on the Gibbs free energy function. A set of closed and analytical expressions of the constitutive relationships for the magnetostrictive materials are obtained, in which all parameters can be determined by those measurable experiments in mechanics and physics. Then the model can be simplified to two cases, i.e. magnetostrictive rods and films. It is found that the predictions from this model are in good accordance with the experimental data including both rods and films. In particular, the effects of pre-stress or in-plane residual stress and environment temperature on the magnetization or the magnetostriction are also discussed.

Abstract:Certain ferroelectric materials possess dual electrostrictive and piezoelectric characteristics, depending on their specific Curie temperatures. These materials exhibit piezoelectric characteristics in the ferroelectric phase when the temperature is below the Curie point. However, they become electrostrictive in the paraelectric phase (non-polar phase) as the temperature exceeds the Curie point. The (direct) electrostrictive effect is a quadratic dependence of stress or strain on applied electric field. The nonlinear electromechanical effect of electrostrictive materials provides stronger actuation performance as compared with that of piezoelectric materials. Due to the complexity of the generic ferroelectric actuators, micro-electromechanics and control characteristics of generic electrostrictive/piezoelectric dynamics system deserve an in-depth investigation. In this study, electro-mechanical dynamic system equations and generic boundary conditions of hybrid electrostrictive/piezoelectric double-curvature shell continua are derived using the energy-based Hamilton’s principle, elasticity theory, electrostrictive/piezoelectric constitutive relations, and Gibb’s free energy function. Moreover, the second converse electrostrictive effect and the direct piezoelectric effect are all considered in the generic governing equations. Simplifications of the generic theory to other common geometries or specific materials are demonstrated and their electromechanical characteristics are also evaluated.

Abstract:This paper presents a numerical model for the analysis of magneto-mechanical problems in magnetostrictive materials. The governing equations of these phenomena are solved simultaneously using a strong coupling model based on the finite element method. The magnetic force in magnetostrictive materials is calculated by a numerical model based on the local application of the virtual work principle. The variation of the permeability with the mechanical stress is taken into account. The strong coupling model is applied to a simple example and the results are compared with a weak coupling model.

Abstract:This paper presents a general theoretical model of constitutive relationships for the soft ferromagnetic and/or the giant magnetostrictive rods under a prestress and a bias magnetic field on the basis of Gibbs' free energy function. After Gibbs' free energy function is expanded by Taylor's series expansion with the stress and the magnetization in the materials as the independent variables, a transcendental function is appropriately selected to replace the first terms with higher order up to six on the basis of the meaning of mechanics and physical theory of magnetic domains, from which a set of closed and analytical expressions of the constitutive relationships for the soft ferromagnetic material rods are obtained, and the parameters appearing in the relationships are determined by those measurable experiments in mechanics and physics. It is found that the predictions from this model are in good accordance with the experimental data given by Kuruzar and Cullity [Int. J. Magn. 1, 323 (1971)] and Jiles and Atherton [J. Phys. D 17, 1265 (1995)] and that this model can be degenerated into the relevant constitutive relationships for the giant magnetostrictive materials obtained by Zheng and Liu [J. Appl. Phys. 97, 053901 (2005)]. Comparing this model with other existing models in this field, the quantitative results exhibit that the relationships obtained here are more effective to describe the effect of the prestress on the magnetostrictive strain and the magnetization, and the effect of the stress and the magnetic field on Young's modulus. Abstract:In this paper, non-linear deformation behavior of magnetostrictive materials is studied and three magnetoelastic coupling constitutive models are developed. The standard square (SS) constitutive model is developed by means of truncating the polynomial expansion of the Gibbs free energy. The hyperbolic tangent (HT) constitutive equations, which involve a hyperbolic tangent magnetic-field dependence, are proposed to model the magnetic-field-induced strain saturation of magnetostrictive materials in the region of intense magnetic fields. A new model based on density of domain switching (DDS) is established in terms of the basic truth that magnetic domain switching underlies magnetostrictive deformation. In this model, it is assumed that the relation between density of domain switching, defined by the quantity of magnetic domains switched by per unit magnetic field and magnetic field can be described by a density function with normal distribution. The moduli in these constitutive models can be determined by a material function that is proposed to describe the dependence of the peak piezomagnetic coefficient on the compressive pre-stress for one-dimensional cases based on the experimental results published. The accuracy of the non-linear constitutive relations is evaluated by comparing the theoretical values with experimental results of a Terfenol-D rod operated under both compressive pre-stress and bias magnetic field. Results indicate that the SS constitutive equations can accurately predict the experimental results under a low or moderate magnetic field while the HT model can, to some extent, reflect the trend of saturation of magnetostrictive strain under a high magnetic field. The model based on DDS, which is more effective in simulating the experimental curves, can capture the main characteristics of the mechanism of magnetoelastic coupling deformation of a Terfenol-D rod, such as the notable dependence of magnetoelastic response on external stress and the saturation of magnetostrictive strain under intense magnetic fields. In addition, the SS constitutive relation for a general three-dimensional problem is discussed and an approach to characterize the modulus tensors is proposed.

Abstract:The magnetostrictive strain-applied field curve typical of giant magnetostrictive materials is nonlinear and it is affected notably by prestress and temperature. A constitutive model to describe these properties is suggested in this paper. The model considered here is built on the Gibbs free energy function G(σij,Mk,T). Thermodynamic relations are used to obtain the constitutive expressions. Results based on the model show that the nonlinear property of magnetostrictive strain, the magnetization, and Young’s modulus under different prestress and temperature are in excellent agreement with experimental data. Moreover, the proposed model is convenient to be used in engineering applications since the parameters referred to the model can all be easily determined by experiments.

Abstract:It is difficult to give the theoretical calculating and constants measuring for the electrostrictive materials, since the constitutive equations of this kind of materials are nonlinear. In addition, the electric body force should be taken into consideration. In this paper, the proper constitutive equations have been given. And it is suggested that Maxwell stress is suitable for the electric body force. According to the three different treatments, i.e., the two approx- imate solutions of 0 order （electrical body force considered or not） and analytical solution for general case, the gener- al solutions for a simple model are worked out. Finally, several numerical examples of displacement and stress fields are listed in the table. The numerical results reveal that, the electric nonlinear effect and the electric body force should be considered properly according to the different conditions.

Abstract:The first thermodynamic law contains a universal thermodynamic variational principle. The complete internal energy variational principle in the electroelastic analysis is not discussed in previous papers. In this paper this principle will be discussed. From this principle the simple complete governing equations can be deduced, and the Maxwell stress can be naturally derived from this variational principle. It is shown that the Maxwell stress has slightly different forms determined by using internal energy or electric Gibbs free energy variational principle, but substantially they are the same. In the second-order precision the Maxwell stress is uniquely determined, and its expression has the same form for all deformable and rigid dielectrics. The electroelastic analyses in the dielectric should be studied together with its environment, because the electric field exists in all materials except the ideal conductor. The complete governing equations under finite deformation in the initial configuration are also discussed.
A General Magnetoelastic Coupling Theory of Deformable Magnetized Medium Including Magnetic Forces and Magnetostriction Effects

Abstract:From the viewpoint of energy, a general magnetoelastic coupling theory including magnetic forces and magnetostriction effects is proposed for deformable magnetized medium. Firstly, a Taylor series expansion of independent variables of stress and magnetization in the elastic Gibbs free energy function is applied to obtain a polynomial expression; and then based on the magnetoelastic coupling mechanism, appropriate transcendental functions are substituted for some terms in a polynomial constitutive relationship derived by way of substituting the polynomial Gibbs free energy function in thermodynamic equations to achieve a more compact magnetostrictive constitutive relationship. The numerical simulation exhibits that the predicted magnetostrictive strain and magnetization curves under various pre-stresses are in good agreement with the experimental data given by Kuruzar et al (1971) and Jiles et al (1984). Secondly, based on the above magnetization constitutive relationship, a general magnetic forces expression is presented according to the variational principle for the total energy functional of the coupling system of the 3-d deformable magnetized materials. It is found that for the case of linear isotropic ferromagnetic materials, the magnetic forces expression can be degenerated into the Zhou-Zheng Model (1999). Combining the above nonlinear magnetostrictive constitutive relationship and magnetic forces expression, a general nonlinear magnetoelastic coupling theory is presented in this paper for deformable magnetized medium.

Abstract:As a new type and high performance functional materials,giant magnetostrictive materials has shown good application prospects in many fields.But its further application is restricted because of its drawbacks such as hysteresis and non-linearity.From the analysis of produce mechanism of giant magnetostrictive phenomenon,a control method is proposed based on flux density.The analysis and experiment results show that the hysteresis of giant magnetostrictive materials will decrease and the control precision of it will be improved if adopting the control method based on flux density.

Abstract:By introducing two displacement functions and two stress functions, the governing equations of the linear theory of magneto-electro-thermo-elasticity with transverse isotropy are simplified. On selecting certain physical quantities as the basic unknowns, two new state equations are established. Each of them is order reduced when compared with the one reported recently in literature, leading to a higher numerical efficiency. The material inhomogeneity along the axis of symmetry (z-direction) can be taken into account and an approximate laminate model is employed to facilitate deriving analytical solutions. The validity of new formulations is examined by considering a laminated magneto-electro-elastic rectangular plate and good agreement is obtained with existent results. A plate with a functionally graded property is then analyzed. The effect of magnetoelectric coupling in a BaTiO3–CoFe2O4 composite predicted from the micromechanics simulation is studied quantitatively.
