Abstract:A proof is given of the fact that the real projective plane P 2 has the Wecken property, i.e. for every selfmap f : P 2 → P 2 , the minimum number of fixed points among all selfmaps homotopic to f is equal to the Nielsen number N (f ) of f .

Abstract:For a pair of maps phi: M --> P and psi: P --> M between compact surfaces, the minimum number of fixed points in the homotopy class of phi . psi may differ from that of psi . phi. We give a sufficient condition for them to be the same, improving a recent result of M.R. Kelly. It is then applied to show that for every surface of negative Euler characteristic, the difference between the minimum number of fixed points and the Nielsen number can be arbitrarily large. The corresponding question for boundary-preserving self-maps of orientable 3-manifolds is also discussed.
Global Pinching Theorems for Minimal Submanifolds in a Complex Projective Space

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the compact minimal submanifold M-n(n >= 3) in the complex projective space CPn+p/2 (1). Denote by S the square norm of the second fundamental form. Set, (S) over tilde = S + 1/2 vertical bar t vertical bar(2) and epsilon = inf(M)vertical bar P vertical bar(2) , where P, t are the tensors defined in (2.1) below. We first, prove such that if parallel to S parallel to(n/2) < alpha 1 (n, epsilon) for epsilon > 0, then M is a totally geodesic submanifold CPn/2. Moreover, we prove if parallel to(S) over tilde parallel to(n/2) < alpha 3(n), where alpha 3(n) is an explicit positive constant depending only on n, then M is a totally geodesic submanifold CPn/2. We also prove other global pinching theorems for minimal submanifolds in the complex projective space.

Abstract:We are interested in cyclic covers of the projective line which are totally ramified at all of their branch points. We begin with curves given by an equation of the form y n = f ( x ) y^{n}=f(x) , where f f is a polynomial of degree d d . Under a mild hypothesis, it is easy to see that all of the branch points must be Weierstrass points. Our main problem is to find the total Weierstrass weight of these points, B W BW . We obtain a lower bound for B W BW , which we show is exact if n n and d d are relatively prime. As a fraction of the total Weierstrass weight of all points on the curve, we get the following particularly nice asymptotic formula (as well as an interesting exact formula): lim d → ∞ B W g 3 − g = n + 1 3 ( n − 1 ) 2 , \begin{equation*} \lim _{d\to \infty }\frac {BW}{g^{3}-g}=\frac {n+1}{3(n-1)^{2}}, \end{equation*} where g g is the genus of the curve. In the case that n = 3 n=3 (cyclic trigonal curves), we are able to show in most cases that for sufficiently large primes p p , the branch points and the non-branch Weierstrass points remain distinct modulo p p .

Abstract:We give a complete proof of the following theorem which was conjectured by Jakob Nielsen for closed oriented surfaces.THEOREM. Let f: M --> M be a homeomorphism of a compact surface. When M is closed, then f is isotopic to a diffeomorphism with N(f) fixed points, where N(f) is its Nielsen number. When M has boundary, N(f) should be replaced by the relative Nielsen number N(f; M, partial derivative M) defined by Schirmer.Another result is the inequality \L(f) - chi(M)\ less-than-or-equal-to N(f) - chi(M) when chi(M) < 0, where L(f) is the Lefschetz number and chi(M) is the Euler characteristic.

Abstract:For a self-map ƒ of a compact connected polyhedron X, the Nielsen number N(f) is defined to be the number of essential fixed point classes (see [1] for an introduction to Nielsen fixed point theory). It is a classical theorem of Wecken [7] that N(f ) is a lower bound of the number of fixed points for all maps homotopic to ƒ, and that if X is a manifold of dimension > 3 this lower bound is always realizable (see also [1]). It is now known [3] that N(f) is realizable if X has no local cut points and X is not a surface. The readability problem for maps on surfaces is still open. Historically, the theory of fixed point classes originated with Nielsen's study [5] of surface homeomorphisms. The purpose of this work is to examine the realizabiUty of the Nielsen number of a surface homeomorphism as the least number of fixed points in an isotopy class. The same problem for higher-dimensional manifolds is open.

Abstract:The Nielsen Conjecture for Homeomorphisms asserts that any homeomorphism $f$ of a closed manifold is isotopic to a map realizing the Nielsen number of $f$, which is a lower bound for the number of fixed points among all maps homotopic to $f$. The main theorem of this paper proves this conjecture for all orientation preserving maps on geometric or Haken 3-manifolds. It will also be shown that on many manifolds all maps are isotopic to fixed point free maps. The proof is based on the understanding of homeomorphisms on 2-orbifolds and 3-manifolds. Thurston's classification of surface homeomorphisms will be generalized to 2-dimensional orbifolds, which is used to study fiber preserving maps of Seifert fiber spaces. Maps on most Seifert fiber spaces are indeed isotopic to fiber preserving maps, with the exception of four manifolds and orientation reversing maps on lens spaces or $S^3$. It will also be determined exactly which manifolds have a unique Seifert fibration up to isotopy. These informations will be used to deform a map to certain standard map on each piece of the JSJ decomposition, as well as on the neighborhood of the decomposition tori, which will make it possible to shrink each fixed point class to a single point, and remove inessential fixed point classes.

Enumeration of non-nodal real plane rational curves

Abstract:Welschinger invariants enumerate real nodal rational curves in the plane or in another real rational surface. We analyze the existence of similar enumerative invariants that count real rational plane curves having prescribed non-nodal singularities and passing through a generic conjugation-invariant configuration of appropriately many points in the plane. We show that an invariant like this is unique: it enumerates real rational three-cuspidal quartics that pass through generically chosen four pairs of complex conjugate points. Consequently, we show that through any generic configuration of four pairs of complex conjugate points, one can always trace a pair of real rational three-cuspidal quartics.

Abstract:Abstract We prove that for an embedded unstable one-sided minimal hypersurface of the $(n+1)$-dimensional real projective space, the Morse index is at least $n+2$, and this bound is attained by the cubic isoparametric minimal hypersurfaces. We also show that there exist closed embedded two-sided minimal surfaces in the 3-dimensional real projective space of each odd index by computing the index of the Lawson surfaces.

Abstract:We discuss coincidences of pairs (f_1, f_2) of maps between manifolds. We recall briefly the definition of four types of Nielsen numbers which arise naturally from the geometry of generic coincidences. They are lower bounds for the minimum numbers MCC and MC which measure to some extend the 'essential' size of a coincidence phenomenon. In the setting of fixed point theory these Nielsen numbers all coincide with the classical notion but in general they are distinct invariants. We illustrate this by many examples involving maps from spheres to the real, complex or quaternionic projective space KP(n'). In particular, when n' is odd and K = R or C or when n' = 23 mod 24 and K = H, we compute the minimum number MCC and all four Nielsen numbers for every pair of these maps, and we establish a 'Wecken theorem' in this context (in the process we correct also a mistake in previous work concerning the quaternionic case). However, when n' is even, counterexamples can occur, detected e.g. by Kervaire invariants.

Abstract:A fake projective plane is a complex surface with the same Betti numbers as $\mathbb{C} P^2$ but not biholomorphic to it. We study the fake projective plane $\mathbb{P}_{\operatorname{fake}}^2 = (a = 7, p = 2, \emptyset, D_3 2_7)$ in the Cartwright-Steger classification. In this paper, we exploit the large symmetries given by $\operatorname{Aut}(\mathbb{P}_{\operatorname{fake}}^2) = C_7 \rtimes C_3$ to construct an embedding of this surface into $\mathbb{C} P^5$ as a system of $56$ sextics with coefficients in $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-7})$. For each torsion line bundle $T \in \operatorname{Pic}(\mathbb{P}_{\operatorname{fake}}^2)$, we also compute and study the linear systems $|nH + T|$ with small $n$, where $H$ is an ample generator of the Néron-Severi group.

Abstract:We apply the ‘non-collapsing’ technique, previously applied by Brendle in the proof of the Lawson conjecture and by Andrews and Li in the proof of the Pinkall-Sterling conjecture, to higher dimensional hypersurfaces satisfying a linear relation between the principal curvatures, under the additional assumption that the hypersurface has two distinct principal curvatures at each point. As special cases, the result gives simple new proofs of results of Otsuki for minimal hypersurfaces, and of Li and Wei for hypersurfaces with vanishing mth mean curvature.

Abstract:In this paper we provide a computer assisted proof that about two thousand surgeries far away from the ideal point in the hyperbolic Dehn filling space of the figure-eight knot complement are infinitesimally projectively rigid. We also prove that for projective deformations of the figure-eight knot complement sufficiently close to the complete hyperbolic structure, the induced map on the first cohomology of the longitude of the boundary torus is non-zero. This paper provides a complementary piece to the results of Heusener and Porti who showed that for each k in Z, there is a sufficiently large Nk for which every k/n-Dehn filling on the figure-eight knot complement for n larger than Nk is infinitesimally projectively rigid. In the process of the proof, we provide explicit representations of the figure-eight knot complement in PSO(3,1) which are rational in the real and imaginary parts of the shapes of the ideal tetrahedra used to glue the knot complement together.

Abstract:The sextic plane curves that are invariant under the standard action of the icosahedral group on the projective plane make up a pencil of genus ten curves (spanned by a sum of six lines and a three times a conic). This pencil was first considered in a note by R.~M.~Winger in 1925 and is nowadays named after him. The second author recently gave this a modern treatment and proved among other things that it contains essentially every smooth genus ten curve with icosahedral symmetry. We here show that the Jacobian of such a curve contains the tensor product of an elliptic curve with a certain integral representation of the icosahedral group. We find that the elliptic curve comes with a distinguished point of order $3$, prove that the monodromy on this part of the homology is the full congruence subgroup $\Gamma_1(3)\subset \SL_2(\Zds)$ and subsequently identify the base of the pencil with the associated modular curve. We also observe that the Winger pencil `accounts' for the deformation of the Jacobian of Bring's curve as a principal abelian fourfold with an action of the icosahedral group.

Abstract:The chromatic polynomial χG(q)\chi _G(q) of a graph GG counts the number of proper colorings of GG. We give an affirmative answer to the conjecture of Read and Rota-Heron-Welsh that the absolute values of the coefficients of the chromatic polynomial form a log-concave sequence. The proof is obtained by identifying χG(q)\chi _G(q) with a sequence of numerical invariants of a projective hypersurface analogous to the Milnor number of a local analytic hypersurface. As a by-product of our approach, we obtain an analogue of Kouchnirenko’s theorem relating the Milnor number with the Newton polytope; we also characterize homology classes of Pn×Pm\mathbb {P}^n \times \mathbb {P}^m corresponding to subvarieties and answer a question posed by Trung-Verma.

Abstract:Every smooth cubic plane curve has 9 inflection points, 27 sextatic points, and 72 “points of type nine". Motivated by these classical algebro-geometric constructions, we study the following topological question: Is it possible to continuously choose n distinct unordered points on each smooth cubic plane curve for a natural number n? This question is equivalent to asking if certain fiber bundle admits a continuous section or not. We prove that the answer is no when n is not a multiple of 9. Our result resolves a conjecture of Benson Farb.
