Abstract:A new Yb-doped crystal Yb3+: Lu2SiO5 laser was demonstrated. The laser was Q-switched at 1058nm by an InGaAs saturable absorber above 25KHz. The slope efficiency were 4.6% and 3.0% for CW and Q-switched laser respectively.

Abstract:New Yb-doped crystal Yb~(3+)∶Lu_2SiO_5(Yb∶LSO) lasers pumped by diode-laser at 976 nm with passively Q-switched and multi-wavelength continuous-wave(CW) output were demonstrated.The maximum CW output power was 490 mW with the absorbed pump power of(2.57 W.) The slope efficiency and optical-optical conversion efficiency were(22.2%) and(14.2%) respectively.The threshold was(299 mW,) and the laser wavelength was(1084 nm.) The wavelength could be tunable from 1034 to(1085 nm) with a prism.For the Q-switched output,the laser operated at(1058 nm) with an InGaAs semiconductor saturable absorber mirror(SESAM).The Q-switched output slope efficiency of(3.0%) with the maximum absorbed pump power of(1.73 W) was also obtained.The pulse repetition rate was 25～(39 kHz) and was increased with the pump power increased.

Abstract:Yb:LSO CW and Q-switched lasers pumped by diode lasers were demonstrated. Q-switched laser operated at 1058nm with InGaAs absorber. Pulse repetition was around 39KHz, slope efficiency of CW and Q-switched lasers were 22.2% and 3.0%.

Abstract:We demonstrate a 980-nm Q-switch Yb-doped photonic crystal fiber laser by a multilayer molybdenum sulfide polymer composite as the broadband saturable absorber which is prepared by the chemical vapor deposition method. We achieve passively Q-switching operations at 978 nm with the pulse width of 2.7 and 0.63 μs, corresponding to the repetition rate of 212 and 221 kHz, respectively. The maximum output power is 127 mW. It is the first time that MoS 2 Q-switched Yb-doped photonic crystal fiber laser at 980 nm is demonstrated. The experimental results show that few-layer MoS 2 is a promising broadband saturable absorber material.

Abstract:We report on the continuous-wave (CW) and, for what we believe to be the first time, passively mode-locked (ML) laser operation of an Yb3+-doped YSr3(PO4)3 crystal. Utilizing a 976-nm spatially single-mode, fiber-coupled laser diode as pump source, the Yb:YSr3(PO4)3 laser delivers a maximum CW output power of 333 mW at 1045.8 nm with an optical efficiency of 55.7% and a slope efficiency of 60.9%. Employing a quartz-based Lyot filter, an impressive wavelength tuning range of 97 nm at the zero level was achieved in the CW regime, spanning from 1007 nm to 1104 nm. In the ML regime, incorporating a commercially available semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM) to initiate and maintain soliton-like pulse shaping, the Yb:YSr3(PO4)3 laser generated pulses as short as 61 fs at 1062.7 nm, with an average output power of 38 mW at a repetition rate of ∼66.7 MHz.

Abstract:We report on the investigation of continuous-wave (CW) and SEmiconductor Saturable Absorber Mirror (SESAM) mode-locked operation of a Yb:GdScO3 laser. Using a single-transverse-mode, fiber-coupled InGaAs laser diode at 976 nm as a pump source, the Yb:GdScO3 laser delivers 343 mW output power at 1062 nm in the CW regime, which corresponds to a slope efficiency of 52%. Continuous tuning is possible across a wavelength range of 84 nm (1027-1111 nm). Using a commercial SESAM to initiate mode-locking and stabilize soliton-type pulse shaping, the Yb:GdScO3 laser produces pulses as short as 42 fs at 1065.9 nm, with an average output power of 40 mW at 66.89 MHz. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of passively mode-locking with Yb:GdScO3 crystal.

Abstract:We describe the cw and Q-switched actions of a novel erbium-doped crystal Er:Lu2SiO5 pumped by a MgO:PPLN-OPO at 1536 nm. An efficient 1580.9 nm cw laser with the output power of 608 mW is obtained when the incident power is 4.5 W, corresponding to a slope efficiency of 11.1%. In the Q-switched operation, the pulse energy up to 1.2 mJ is obtained at a repetition rate of 200 Hz.

Abstract:We report on the continuous-wave (CW) and mode-locked (ML) laser performance of an Yb3+-doped yttrium-gadolinium orthoaluminate crystal, Yb:(Y,Gd)AlO3. Pumping by a single-transverse-mode fiber-coupled 976 nm InGaAs laser diode, the maximum output power in the CW regime amounted to 429 mW at 1041.8 nm corresponding to a slope efficiency of 51.1% and a continuous wavelength tuning across 84 nm (1011-1095 nm) was achieved. The self-starting ML operation of the Yb:(Y,Gd)AlO3 laser was stabilized by a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror. Soliton pulses as short as 43 fs were generated at 1052.3 nm with an average output power of 103 mW and a pulse repetition rate of ∼70.8 MHz. To the best of our knowledge, our result represents the first report on the passively mode-locked operation of a Yb:(Y,Gd)AlO3 laser, and the shortest pulse duration ever achieved from any Yb3+-doped orthorhombic perovskite aluminate crystals.

Abstract:We report on the first sub-60 fs pulse generated from a diode-pumped SESAM mode-locked Yb-laser based on a non-centrosymmetric Yb:YAl3(BO3)4 crystal as a gain medium. In the continuous-wave regime, pumping with a spatially single-mode, fiber-coupled 976 nm InGaAs laser diode, the Yb:YAl3(BO3)4 laser generated 391 mW at 1041.7 nm with a slope efficiency as high as 65.1%, and a wavelength tuning across 59 nm (1019 to 1078 nm) was achieved. By implementing a commercial SESAM to initiate and sustain the soliton type mode-locking, and using only a 1 mm-thick laser crystal, the Yb:YAl3(BO3)4 laser delivered pulses as short as 56 fs at a central wavelength of 1044.6 nm with an average output power of 76 mW at a pulse repetition rate of ∼67.55 MHz. To the best of our knowledge, this result represents the shortest pulses ever achieved from Yb:YAB crystal.

Abstract:Ytterbium (Yb 3 +) doped rare-earth oxyorthosilicates with a general chemical formula of Yb ${}^{3+}:\text{RE}_{2}\text{SiO}_{5}$ (where RE = Gd [1], Y [2], Lu [3] or Sc [4]), crystallize in the monoclinic system $(\text{sp}.\ \text{gr}.\ C2/c,\ C_{2h}^{6})$ . One of the well-known representatives of this crystal family is the scandium oxyorthosilicate Yb:Sc 2 SiO 5 . It exhibits a relatively high thermal conductivity of 7.5 Wm-1K-1 (for 1 at.% Yb 3 + doping) at room temperature and a negative thermooptic coefficient of $-6.3\times 10^{-6}\mathrm{K}^{-1}$ [5], which ensures good heat removal and a relatively weak thermal lensing effect. The broad gain profiles and the moderate luminescence lifetime (0.7 ms) of Yb:Sc 2 SiO 5 make it very suitable for the development of femtosecond mode-locked (ML) oscillators and amplifiers [6]. Power scalable operation of such oscillators is also possible in the thin-disk architecture. In this work, we demonstrate sub-40 fs soliton pulse generation from a diode-pumped SESAM ML Yb: $\text{Sc}_{2}\text{SiO}_{5}$ laser near 1070 nm.

Abstract:A quasi-continuous wave laser diode side-pumped passively Q-switched Yb:YAG slab laser with Cr4+:YAG saturable absorber has been demonstrated in order to understand the pulse properties of Yb:YAG crystal. To our knowledge the maximum 69% extraction efficiency is achieved by the system. 44μJ pulse energy and 1.64KW peak power with near diffraction-limited beam quality are presented at 25Hz repetition rate. The build-up time of the Q-giant in the passively Q-switched laser is shown.

Abstract:We report on room temperature laser actions of a novel thulium-doped crystal Tm center dot Lu2SiO5 (LSO) under diode pumping. An optical optical conversion efficiency of 12% and a slope efficiency of 21% were obtained with the maximum continuous wave (CW) output power of 0.67 W. The emission wavelengths of Tm LSO laser were centered at 2058.4 nm with bandwidth of similar to 13.6 nm.

Abstract:A diode-cladding-pumped mid-infrared passively Q-switched Ho3+-doped fluoride fiber laser using a reverse designed broad band semiconductor saturable mirror (SESAM) was demonstrated. Nonlinear reflectivity of the SESAM was measured using an in-house Yb3+-doped mode-locked fiber laser at 1062 nm. Stable pulse train was produced at a slope efficient of 12.1% with respect to the launched pump power. Maximum pulse energy of 6.65 mu J with a pulse width of 1.68 mu s and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of similar to 50 dB was achieved at a repetition rate of 47.6 kHz and center wavelength of 2.971 mu m. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first 3 mu m region SESAM-based Q-switched fiber laser with the highest average power and pulse energy, as well as the longest wavelength from mid-infrared passively Q-switched fluoride fiber lasers.

Abstract:We report on a detailed investigation of continuous-wave and SESAM mode-locked (ML) laser operation of an Yb:SrLaAlO4 laser. Pumped with a high-brightness fiber laser at 976 nm, the ML Yb:SrLaAlO4 laser delivered soliton pulses as short as 38 fs at 1071 nm with an average output power of 86 mW and a pulse repetition rate of ∼59 MHz. The maximum average output power reached 1.05 W at 1054 nm for longer pulses (94 fs), corresponding to a peak power of 146 kW and an optical efficiency of 38.6%. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of SESAM ML operation of the Yb:SrLaAlO4 laser.

Abstract:We report on sub-40 fs pulse generation from a Yb:Sc2SiO5 laser pumped by a spatially single-mode fiber-coupled laser diode at 976 nm. A maximum output power of 545 mW was obtained at 1062.6 nm in the continuous-wave regime, corresponding to a slope efficiency of 64% and a laser threshold of 143 mW. A continuous wavelength tuning across 80 nm (1030 -1110 nm) was also achieved. Implementing a SESAM for starting and stabilizing the mode-locked operation, the Yb:Sc2SiO5 laser delivered soliton pulses as short as 38 fs at 1069.5 nm with an average output power of 76 mW at a pulse repetition rate of ∼79.8 MHz. The maximum output power was scaled to 216 mW for slightly longer pulses of 42 fs, which corresponded to a peak power of 56.6 kW and an optical efficiency of 22.7%. To the best of our knowledge, these results represent the shortest pulses ever achieved with any Yb3+-doped rare-earth oxyorthosilicate crystal.

Abstract:By using polycrystalline Cr2+:ZnS ceramics with different transmissions as saturable absorbers (SAs), the different output performance of passively Q-switched (PQS) Ho:LuAG lasers end-pumped with continuous-wave (CW) Tm:YLF laser was demonstrated. When the transmission of the Cr2+:ZnS SA was 86.3%, the pulse duration changed from 50.6 to 46 ns as the absorbed pump power increased from 14.3 to 24 W. The pulse energy and repetition rate were tuned in the range of 2.4-2.9 mJ and 0.36-2.56 kHz, respectively. The output wavelength of the PQS laser shifted from 2100.6 nm (in CW operation) to 2098.3 nm. Using a Cr2+:ZnS SA with transmission of 93.9%, the Ho: LuAG laser achieved a maximum average output power of 5.4 W with slope efficiency of 44.2%.

Abstract:We report on the passive Q-switching laser performance of Yb:LaCa4O(BO3)(3) crystal with Cr4+:YAG or two-dimensional (2D) MoS2 acting as a saturable absorber. With Cr4+: YAG, a pulsed output power of 3.8 W was produced at 71 kHz with a slope efficiency of 49%, whereas at a lower repetition rate, the average pulse energy achieved could reach 250 mu J; the shortest duration and peak power were respectively 17 ns and 14.7 kW. For passive Q-switching with 2D MoS2, 1.61 W of pulsed output power was achieved at 395 kHz; the resulting pulse energy, duration, and peak power were 4.1 mu J, 220 ns, and 18.6 W, respectively.

Abstract:We report on a femtosecond semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM) mode-locked Yb:LuYAG laser. Pumped by a 976 nm single-mode fiber laser, a self-starting mode-locked Yb:LuYAG laser was demonstrated, delivering a 618-mW output power with 140-fs pulses and a 95.4-MHz repetition rate. The output spectrum is centered at 1053 nm with a spectral width of 10.4 nm. To the best of our knowledge, this is the shortest pulse ever generated from a mode-locked Yb:LuYAG laser.

Abstract:A passively Q-switched 1.33 µm Nd:Lu2YSc1.5Ga3.5O12 (Nd:LuYSGG) laser with V3+:YAG as the saturable absorber was demonstrated for the first time, with output couplers (OCs) of 5% and 10%. Under the absorbed pump power of 6.27 W, a maximum average output power of 0.39 W, a maximum pulse repetition rate of 41.6 kHz and a maximum pulse energy of 9.38 µJ were obtained with an OC of 5%, while the minimum pulse width of 20.8 ns was obtained with an OC of 10%. The results indicate that the Nd:LuYSGG crystal is a promising laser material for achieving short pulses with high energies at 1.33 µm.
