Abstract:Polymeric(hollow) sub-micro/nanocapsule is a kind of composite particle with special morphology,which synthesis techniques has become one of the research hotspots in the field of nanometer science.The approaches of self-assembly,template,dendrimer and miniemulsion polymerization and their recent developments are described in detail,as well as the prospects,advantages and disadvantages of each approach.Moreover,the approach of miniemulsion polymerization has big potentials and wide prospect for the industrialization of polymeric(hollow) sub-micro/nanocapsules as its simple,environment-friendly and efficient preparation technique.Especially,the interfacially confined reversible addition fragmentation transfer(RAFT) miniemulsion polymerization combines the living polymerization of RAFT polymerization with the droplet nucleation mechanism of miniemulsion polymerization,the structure(size,morphology and thickness of shell) and compose(polymeric shell and functional group) of the polymeric(hollow) sub-micro/nanocapsules sub-micro/nanocapsule can be exactly tuned by the RAFT miniemulsion polymerization,and the polymeric nano-shell with much higher crosslinking degree can be fabricated.
Preparation of "micelles enhanced " polyelectrolyte capsules

Abstract:Hybrid CaCO3 particles were used as templates to fabricate two kinds of "micelles enhanced" polyelectrolyte capsules with three different polyel ectrolytes such as poly( allylamine hydrochloride), poly( sodium styrenesulfonate), and poly (di-allyldlmethylammonium chloride) via LbL technique. Both of (PAH/PSS)(6) and (PADA/PSS)(6) capsules had good spherical shape and good dispersion by CLSM. In contrast with conventional polyelectrolyte capsules, these novel micelles enhanced capsules had thick and compact capsule wall. Meanwhile, fine FESEM images showed that there was a significant difference in microstructure and topology between the two kinds of capsules made of different component polyelectrolytes.
Synthesis of Size-Controlled Acid-Resistant Hybrid Calcium Carbonate Microparticles As Templates for Fabricating “Micelles-Enhanced” Polyelectrolyte Capsules by the LBL Technique

Abstract:Size-controlled, low-dispersed calcium carbonate microparticles were synthesized in the presence of the amphiphilic block copolymer polystyrene-b-poly(acrylic acid) (PS-b-PAA) by modulating the concentration of block copolymer in the reactive system. This type of hybrid microparticles have acid-resistant properties. By investigating the aggregation behaviors of PS-b-PAA micelles by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), the mechanism of hybrid calcium carbonate formation illustrated that the block copolymer served not only as "pseudonuclei" for the growth of calcium carbonate nanocrystals, but also forms the supramicelle congeries, a spherical framework, as templates for calcium carbonate nanocrystal growth into hybrid CaCO(3) particles. Moreover, this pilot study shows that the hybrid microparticle is a novel candidate as a template for fabricating multilayer polyelectrolyte capsules, in which the block copolymer is retained within the capsule interior after core removal under soft conditions. This not only facilitates the encapsulation of special materials, but also provides "micelles-enhanced" polyelectrolyte capsules.

Abstract:The fabrication of hollow microspheres to encapsulate functional molecules, such as drugs, insecticides, and proteins, is of ever-increasing importance. Many chemical and physicochemical methods have been tested for various specific encapsulations, but most of them have not been developed into an industrial process. In this work, we present a straightforward method to prepare liquid core-polymer shell microcapsules by first templating an oil-in-water emulsion stabilized by an interfacial monolayer of polystyrene latex particles (often referred to as "Pickering emulsion"), and subsequently locking the assembled particles into a robust polymeric shell through the precipitation of a biodegradable polymer poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) at the interface. The resultant microcapsules that have a solid polymeric enveloped around the oil droplets are stable and retain their integrity during the drying in air. Therefore, they should have great potential to serve as vehicles for encapsulating functional molecules especially hydrophobic in nature.

Abstract:Fe2O3 nanoparticles can self-assembly at liquid–liquid interfaces to form stable water-in-oil Pickering emulsions. Novel magnetic and thermo-sensitive microcapsules were one-pot fabricated by radical polymerization of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAm) at the aqueous phases of Pickering emulsions at 60 °C. The obtained PNIPAm was deposited from the water phases onto the interfaces of water-in-oil Pickering emulsions to form Fe2O3/PNIPAm nanocomposite shells because of its hydrophobicity at this reaction temperature. Pickering emulsion polymerization opens up a new route to fabricate a variety of hollow and hybrid microcapsules.

Abstract:Microcapsules with multiple compartments are of significant importance in many applications such as smart drug delivery, microreactor, complicated sensor, and so on. Here we report a novel compound-fluidic electrospray method that could fabricate multicompartment microcapsules in a single step. The as-prepared microcapsules have multiple compartments inside. The compartments are separated from each other by inner walls made from shell materials, and different content can be independently loaded in each of them without any contact. We assemble a hierarchical compound nozzle by inserting certain numbers of metallic inner capillaries separately into a blunt metal needle. The particular configuration of the compound nozzle induces a completely and independently envelope of core fluids by shell fluid, as a result of which mulicomponent microcapsules with multicompartment structure can be obtained. And also, the number of inner compartments and the corresponding encapsulated components can be controlled by rationally designing the configuration of the compound nozzle. This general method can be readily extended to many other functional materials, especially for the effective encapsulation of active ingredients, such as sensitive and reactive materials.

Abstract:Well-defined polyelectrolyte multilayer nanocapsules (NCs) are synthesized by layer-by-layer deposition of poly(acrylic acid) and poly(allylamine hydrochloride) over crystallized miniemulsion nanoparticles, followed by shell crosslinking and template removal. This synthetic approach allows well-controlled dimensions of NCs due to the high colloidal stability of the templates, and may also permit a broad composition range of NCs because of the mild conditions for template removal.

Abstract:Pickering suspension polymerization was used to prepare magnetic polymer microspheres that have polymer cores enveloped by shells of magnetic nanoparticles. Styrene was emulsified in an aqueous dispersion of Fe3O4 nanoparticles using a high shear. The resultant Pickering oil-in-water (o/w) emulsion stabilized solely by magnetic nanoparticles was easily polymerized at 70°C without stirring. Fe3O4 nanoparticles act as effective stabilizers during polymerization and as building blocks for creating the organic–inorganic hybrid nanocomposite after polymerization. The fabricated magnetic nanocomposites were characterized by FTIR, XRD, TGA, DSC, GPC, XPS and SEM. The structures of the polymer core and the nanoparticle shell were analyzed. We investigated the effects on the products of the weight of Fe3O4 nanoparticles used to stabilize the original Pickering emulsions. Pickering suspension polymerization provides a new route for the synthesis of a variety of hybrid nanocomposite microspheres with supracolloidal structures.

Abstract:Rattle-like polymer capsules with multicores in one shell are facilely fabricated by oil-in-water Pickering emulsion polymerization for the first time. The oil phase contains hydrophobic silica nanoparticles dispersed in polymerizable monomer, styrene, and unpolymerizable solvent, hexadecane. The multicore rattle-like capsules are facilely produced after the polymerization of monomers in the oil droplets. The key point of this one-pot method lies in the nucleation of hydrophobic silica and the phase separation between the resulting polystyrene and hexadecane. The influences of the contents of silica, hexadecane, cross-linker, and stabilizer on the structure and morphology of rattle-like capsules are systematically investigated. Moreover, functionalization of the rattle-like capsules can be developed easily by varying hydrophobic nucleation nanoparticles in the oil phase. This work opens up a new route to fabricate multilevel capsules or spheres.
Fabrication of Microcapsules with Special Shapes by Layer-by-layer Assembly on CaCO3 Microparticles

Abstract:Biconvex platelet-like and spindle-like calcium carbonate particles were prepared by mixing Na2CO3 and CaCl2 solutions in the presence of poly (allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) under magnetic stirring and ultrasound treatment, respectively. The platelet-like CaCO3 particles were vaterites, while the spindle-like ones were mainly aragonites. These two kinds of particles were both doped with small amount of PAH. The formation of CaCO3 particles with specific shapes was due to the synergistic effect of mixing method and PAH additives. Then platelet-like and spindle-like polyelectrolyte multilayer microcapsules were fabricated via layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly method using the CaCO3 particles with corresponding shape as templates. The fabricated micrcapsules could be well dispersed in aqueous medium and maintain their original shapes.

Abstract:The procedure to increase shell thickness of multilayer silk microcapsules fabricated by layer-by-layer assembly (LbL assembly) are tedious and time-consuming. To address this, layer-by-layer desolvation (LbL desolvation), a more efficient technique, was developed with PLGA microspheres as sacrificial templates. Due to high efficiency of desolvation in increasing the shell thickness, self-supporting structures were obtained with merely seven silk layers. Permeability of the microcapsules was manipulated with high efficiency as well. Moreover, crosslinking was found to reduce surface charge of the shell. We attributed this to crosslinking-induced conformational change of silk fibroin based on secondary structure analysis. The LbL desolvation technique will facilitate fabrication of multilayer silk microcapsules for biomedical applications. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The technique for fabrication of hollow multilayer microcapsules is initially established by layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes onto sacrificial colloidal particles followed by core removal. It has the advantages of precise control over the size, shape, composition, wall thickness and functions of the obtained hollow microcapsules. More recently, the technique has been developed fast from the fabrication and basic property investigation to functionalization and applications, in particular in bio-related fields such as controlled drug delivery, biosensors and bioreactors. In this article, we shall review recent advances in property manipulation of electrostatic and hydrogen bonded microcapsules by chemical crosslinking, and microcapsules assembled by other driving forces such as covalent interaction, base pair interaction, host–guest interaction and van der Waals interaction. Then the possible applications of LbL microcapsules in bio-related fields are summarized with particular emphasis on very recent achievements in terms of loading and release, surface modification for stealth function or targeting and use as biosensors and bioreactors.

Abstract:Monodisperse hollow microcapsules have potential applicationsin the fields of chemical,medicaland biological engineering.In the present work,monodisperse oil-in-water(O/W) single emulsions containing hydroxyethyl methacrylate(HEMA) and methyl methacrylate(MMA)comonomers generated in microfluidic device were used as templates for synthesis of monodisperse poly(HEMA-MMA) hollow microcapsules,withthe aid of porogen inside emulsions and the UV-initiatingpolymerization.The prepared microcapsules were characterized with optical microscope and scanning electron microscope,and the results showed that thediameter of microcapsule is about 40 μm with a narrowsize distribution,and the microcapsule has a smooth exteriorsurface and rough interiorsurface,thin shell and hollow structure.The method developed in this study provides a new way for preparing monodisperse hollow microcapsules.

Abstract:Although many techniques exist for preparing microcapsules, it is still challenging to fabricate them in an efficient and scalable process without compromising functionality and encapsulation efficiency. We demonstrated a simple one-step approach that exploits a versatile host-guest system and uses microfluidic droplets to generate porous microcapsules with easily customizable functionality. The capsules comprise a polymer-gold nanoparticle composite held together by cucurbit[8]uril ternary complexes. The dynamic yet highly stable micrometer-sized structures can be loaded in one step during capsule formation and are amenable to on-demand encapsulant release. The internal chemical environment can be probed with surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy.

Abstract:Complex hollow microcapsules were fabricated by adsorbing polyelectrolytes (PEs) onto CaCO3 particles doped with oppositely charged PEs, followed by dissolution of the CaCO3 particles with disodium ethylene diamine tetraacetate dihydrate (EDTA). The shells were formed in situ by complexation of the oppositely charged PEs they encountered during core removal. For this context, sodium poly(styrene sulfonate) (PSS) and poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) are exemplified as the doping and adsorbing PEs, respectively. Characterization by modern techniques confirms the hollow nature and integrity of the resulting microcapsules. The capsules expanded their size to 150% of their templates due to the osmotic tension and plastic deformation of the primary shells. A microcapsule with a diameter of 7.5 mm weighed 3.8 pg, in which 74 wt% was contributed by PSS and 26 wt% by PAH. This created a negatively charged surface of the microcapsule (-33 +/- 8.3 mV). Calculation revealed further that 75% of the initially doped PSS was released. An osmotic induced invagination method detected an elasticity modulus of 140 MPa for the complex PAH-PSS shell, which is only half of the value (290 MPa) of the orderly assembled PAH-PSS multilayers. This new technique has the advantages of time-saving and materials-saving, and can be easily scaled-up.

Abstract:Microcapsules are multifunctional materials with applications in various,fields related to biomedical research. In the previous studies, lipids and polymers are used as microcapsule shell construction materials. Recently, the self-assembly of nanoparticles at emulsion interfaces have showed great potential as an alternative for microcapsule fabrication. The construction of microcapsule shells using nanoparticles as building blocks incorporated the unique physicochemical properties of nanoparticles into the functional capabilities of the microcapsules. The new properties derived from nanoparticles, such as enhanced mechanical strength, controllable permeability, readily surface modification and controlled release, making the microcapsules of great interest in bio-delivery applications. In this paper, the recent scientific advances in the self-assembly of nanoparticle protected microcapsules including the theories for nanoparticle interfacial assembly, the strategies for the fabrication of stable microcapsule shells, and the reduction of polydispersity of microcapsules are reviewed. The challenges for the self-assembly of nano-sized capsules are discussed and a proposal for the development of nano-sized capsules is concluded.

Abstract:Aside from smooth and spherical microcapsules, the concept of tailoring complex polymeric microstructures is being taken a step ahead due to their great demand in various applications and fundamental studies in the subjects of microfluidics and nanotechnology. Size, shape, and morphology are of paramount importance for their functional performance and various applications. However, simple, inexpensive, versatile, and high-throughput techniques for fabricating microcapsules with controlled morphology remain a bottleneck for discoveries in the subject of polymer colloids. In this paper, we directly fulfill this need by reporting a novel approach of Pickering emulsion-templated in situ polymerization for tailoring complex polymeric microstructures comprised of a composite shell of titanium dioxide nanoparticle (TiO2 NP)-embedded poly(melamine-urea-formaldehyde) (polyMUF) and a core of hexadecane (HD, soft template). At first, we hydrophobize TiO2 NPs by chemisorbing long-chain biobased myristic acid via a bidentate chelating complex and precisely tune their wettability by varying the grafting density of myristic acid to obtain highly stable oil-in-water (O/W) Pickering emulsion. Thereafter, we employ the optimized TiO2 NPs in the intended encapsulation strategy that enables various microstructures and morphologies with the particle diameter ranging from 5 to 20 μm. Careful manipulation of reaction parameters and copolymer components leads to novel complex microstructures: smooth, raspberry-like, partially budded, hollow, filled, single-holed, and closed-cell-like microstructures. Particle properties such as morphology, size, shell thickness, and core content are governed by the TiO2 NP content, core-to-shell ratio, copolymer component, conversion, and pH value. Based on the results of a series of control experiments, novel mechanisms for the formation of various such microstructures are proposed.
