Abstract:Three-dimensional thermal finite-element modelling and analyses based on an improved thermal model are performed on grooved near-field re-writable phase change optical disk for the first time. The improved model takes into consideration the thermal effects generated by both the incident and reflected light. Performance of the disk as a result of optical and geometrical variations was quantified. The thermal effects due to irradiation by a 430 nm blue laser were also investigated. Temperature profiles and heat flow characteristics were obtained and analysed. One set of result obtained indicated that a numerical aperture of 1.5 with a coupling efficiency of 50% resulted in the highest recorded temperature.

Abstract:An integrated analysis system based on thin film optics, thermal transfer and electromagnetics is developed. Thermal conductivity and generated heat are discussed for mark formation. The simulations of multilayer calorific sources and multibeam heating sources using the finite element method (FEM) are investigated. The readout of nanometer-scaled marks based on computational electromagnetics using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) analysis is discussed. The real marks captured with microscopes can be analyzed using this integrated analysis system combined with digital image technology. Material models in the electromagnetic vector method are discussed with reference to different layers of disk. It provides a powerful tool for structure design and failure analysis of phase-change optical disks.

Abstract:The mechanism of the aperture-type Blu-ray super-resolution near-field phase change optical disk with a mask layer of Sb2Te3 was studied theoretically and experimentally. Optical and thermal simulations were carried out to study the relationships of carrier-to-noise ratio (CNR) with reading speed and power. The theoretical prediction results were in good agreement with the experimental results. It was found that a thermal shield layer (TSL) with a high thermal conductivity, which is inserted into the dielectric layer sandwiched by a mask layer and a phase change layer, can significantly enhance readout thermal stability for the super-resolution near-field structure (super-RENS) optical disk.

Abstract:Super-resolution near-field phase change optical disks with a new mask layer of Sb70Te30 were studied. Disks with two different structures were analyzed using optical and thermal simulation methods. The simulation results showed that the optical disk exhibited maximum response when nearly half the laser spot was covered by the mask. The fast response depended on optimizing both the disk structure and reading power to match a certain speed because the effect of super-resolution near-field structure (super-RENS) was related to the position between the laser beam and the hole formed in the mask layer. Experimental results showed that the disk with a thermal shield layer, which was inserted into the dielectric layer located between the mask layer and the phase change layer, demonstrated a better thermal stability than the disk without the thermal shield layer. This is in good agreement with simulation results. Recording marks as small as 62 nm were observed.

Abstract:A new thermal model to study the laser induced temperature profile of a multilayered phase change optical recording disk is proposed. The new model considers the thermal effect generated by both the transmission and reflection light. The calculation formulae-are listed. The model is used to simulate the Ge2Sb2Te5 phase change optical disks with five layers structure. In order to study the differences between the new and existing models, simulations are carried out using both models and the differences are compared. The differences get larger as the phase change layer becomes thinner. It is also revealed that the differences get larger as the wavelength becomes shorter. The idea proposed in this paper is also suitable for the analysis of magneto-optical disks as well as for improved accuracy in the measurement of thermal parameters.

Abstract:Super-resolution near-field phase-change Blu-ray-type optical disks with a mask layer of Sb2Te3 were studied theoretically and experimentally with a laser wavelength of 405 nm and a numerical aperture (NA) of 0.85. The modulation transfer function (MTF) was calculated and the thermal performance was simulated by the finite element method. Super-resolution near-field phase-change Blu-ray-type optical disks with different structures were fabricated and measured. It was shown that the thermal shield layer was helpful in reducing recorded mark size and improving readout stability. Recorded marks as small as 16 nm were observed. The relevant mechanism was discussed.

Abstract:Thermal analyses are performed on landed multi-track recording on phase change optical disk using a parallel recording head. A new arrangement of parallel recording head is proposed. Temperature uniformity for adjacent tracks was studied. The minimum angle between the slanting line array and the cross tracking line array to achieve temperature uniformity of adjacent track was investigated. This angle was found to be a function of the power and so on. The simulation results can be used to help the design of parallel recording array head as well as the structure of media.

Abstract:The dependence of the optical and thermal characteristics of phase-change optical disks on the multilayer disk structure was analyzed and simulated. Using the integrated software developed, a phase-change optical disk structure for a blue laser is designed with both optical and thermal considerations, and a suitable disk structure is proposed. Based on the designed disk structure, writing and rewriting processes are simulated, and the results are satisfactory.

Abstract:In order to give more sights into the melting (and solidification) heat transfer processes of nano-enhanced phase change material (NePCM) with invisible phase interfaces, a novel indirect method for tracking the phase interface by thermochromic liquid crystal (TLC) thermography is proposed. As an example case to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed method, the classical problem of melting heat transfer in a differentially heated rectangular cavity was revisited in the presence of NePCM of various loadings. A narrowband TLC was selected and calibrated carefully to build the hue-temperature relationship prior to being applied in the melting experiments. For validation purpose, the case of an unloaded NePCM, with a clear visible phase interface, was tested via combined direct and indirect observations. It was shown that this TLC method can easily and accurately capture the dynamic motions of the phase interface during melting. Based on the shape evolutions of the phase interface, it was concluded that for the NePCM sample with a higher loading (and hence a much greater viscosity), heat conduction becomes the dominant mode of heat transfer during melting as a result of the significantly deteriorated natural convection effect. This gives an intuitive confirmation of the hypothesis made in previous studies that were conducted using volume-average-based indirect methods.

Abstract:An integrated design software to analyze optical, thermal and crystallization characteristics of phase change optical disks has been developed. It has been applied to simulate the reflectivity of nano-scale thin films, mark size, effect of super-RENS and effects of sulfur atom diffusion on the recording performance. In order to verify the simulation results, a set of experiments has been designed and carried out. The study results show that the software can simulate accurately the practical processes and then obtain reliable results. The software has been applied to design DVD-RAM 4.7 GB disks with multi layer structure. Based on these simulation results, 4.7 GB/side DVD-RAM disks that can fully meet the DVD-RAM standard have been successfully fabricated, which shows that the software is a powerful tool for the phase change optical disk design.

The relation of the multilayer's optical parameters (reflectivity and reflectivity contrast) and the film thickness of the structure of the six layers of phase-change super-resolution optical disks are studied. The ideal result of thickness for each layer is given.

Abstract:Multi-level reflection was obtained on rewritable phase change optical disks with a static tester using different laser amplitudes. Different levels of input power amplitude give rise to different reflection levels. In order to study the mechanism for forming the multi-level reflection, partial crystallization effect and size effect were studied. The partial crystallization effect was studied using differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) measurement and X-ray diffractometer (XRD) measurement. The size effect was studied by simulation and measurement. Based on the simulation and experimental results the combination of size effect and partial crystallization effect is proposed as the main reason to cause the multi-level reflection. This model can be used to analyse the writing, erasing, and overwriting processes of multi-level reflection modulation recording.

Abstract:The removable and rewritable high-density phase-change optical disk is attractive for high-definition television (HDTV), digital TV and internet downloading. Super-resolution near-field technology is one of the most promising technologies for achieving ultra-high density recording and is considered a more feasible way of near-field optical recording with simpler recording-head design, less mechanical damage, no contamination and higher recording speed. Developing new structures and searching for new mask materials are two important issues.

Abstract:Two structures super-resolution near-field phase-change optical disks with masks Sb-2 Te-3 layer and a thermal shield layer in front of the mask layer on Blu-ray substrates were studied theoretically and experimentally. Optical simulation was conducted and the modulation transfer function (MTF) was calculated. MTF calculation results has revealed that the super-RENS optical disk exhibited the maximum response when nearly half of the laser spot was covered by the mask. The thermal simulation was used to find the optimum condition meaning that half of the laser beam is covered by the aperture on the mask layer. The recording signal and thermal stability on different structures were measured and analyzed. The simulation results are in good agreement with the experiment results.

Abstract:The laser-beam spot size and track pitch of phase change optical disks are continuously decreasing. Hence any slight deformation in the disk will affect data storage performance efficiency. Thus said thermal deformation at high temperatures induced by laser irradiation becomes an important issue in optical disks. Thermal elastic deformation in blue-laser optical disks has been calculated by the finite element method (FEM). The associations of thermal deformation with disk structures and laser power have been investigated to supply methods to decrease thermal deformation. It was found that the peak temperature and peak deformation lies in different layers. Several methods of preventing deformation in blue-laser optical disks have been proposed. It was found that these methods can be used to optimize the structures of high density phase change optical disks.

Abstract:A structure of super-resolution near-field phase-change optical disk with localized surface plasmon coupling effect is proposed. A localized surface plasmon coupling layer (LSPCL) was introduced to form a coupled localized surface plasmons (CLSP) with the mask layer. Recording marks as small as 31 and 36 nm were observed in two structures, which were both much smaller than the smallest mark of 56 nm observed from the conventional one without LSPCL. CLSP not only can reduce mark size but it can also improve carrier-to-noise ratio of recording marks. The thermal stability of the disk was also studied. (C) 2002 American Institute of Physics.
