Abstract:The CdS/CdSe Liquid-Crystal Light Valve (LCLV) has been investigated, especially the switching ratio, contrast, and response time have been analyzed and calculated. Moreover, the optical-electronic properties of the LCLV have been measured. Such devices have been successfully used for large-screen display.

Abstract:A CdS-CdSe liquid-crystal light valve (LCLV) had been investigated, and its optical-electronic properties had been measured. It is found that the photo conductive film has different switching ratio of LCLV with different dark-conductivity of CdS-CdSe. The measurements also show that the response time of the developed LCLV is less than 20ms. the white light contrast is larger than 100:1, the sensitivity is less than 10 micrometer/cm2 and the limiting resolution is larger than 50 lp/mm. Such devices have been successfully used in the large-screen display.

Abstract:To get a high sensitive photo sensor, the effect of doping with copper and chlorine on various properties of vacuum-evaporated CdS and CdSe double layers has been investigated. It was found that the dark conductivity decreases and the photoconductivity increases significantly if the ratio of Cu and Cl is suitable. The response time was about 5～10 ms for doping films and more than 100 ms for undoping ones. Such photoconductive films have been used in the liquid crystal light valves for large screen display and optical data processing as well as visible-to-infrared dynamic image converter.

Abstract:The photoaddressed liquid crystal light valves which are widely used in optical information process and large screen display1,2, are mainly composed of optical and opto-electrical films (shown in Fig.1). In order to improve the performance of the LCLV, all these films should be refined and made perfectly, especially the photoconductive films which determine the opto-electronic characteristic. With the high quality of CdS/CdSe photoconductive film and all other optical and opto-electrical films, the LCLV gets good contrast ratio(>100:1 white light), fast response (<15ms), high brightness (>20001m) and high resolution (>50pl/mm).

Abstract:The optical sub-systems for reflective mode silicon based CMOS-LCD projection display are discussed in this paper. Various methods to improve the optical efficiency of the projection system are proposed. First, new optical modes for the reflective light valve are discussed. The emphasis is on improving the reflectance. Second, a new high throughput projection system employing a 2-step process is proposed. It employs a conventional LCLV projection system capable of very high luminous output. FInally, the color separation and recombination schemes for a full color projector are discussed. A new trichroic prism assembly design is described which has the advantages of low s and p polarization splitting in the reflectance spectrum. Hence it can be used for both color separation and recombination. Thus a compact optical system for reflective projectors is possible with good light efficiency.

Abstract:Detailed description was given of the structure and operation of the novel ZnS xSe 1-x visible blind ultraviolet liquid crystal light valve(UV\|LCLV) in transmission mode.The opto\|electronic requirements of ZnS\-xSe 1-x photosensor for the device were derived and discussed from the UV LCLV electrical model and equivalent circuits.Suitable polycrystalline ZnS\-xSe 1-x film that provided a good matching with the requirements of LCLV were deposited on ITO coated quartz glass by molecular beam epitaxy technique (MBE).Room teperature photo\|responsivity measurements performed on these thin films show that the visible rejection power can reach as high as 3 orders in magnitude.The cutoff wavelength of the response is between 360nm～410nm and follows the energy\|gap dependence on the Se composition of the alloy thin films.The calculated absorption coefficient in UV spectrum is 3 orders higher than in visible region.The results of a.c.characterisation measurements further indicate that the film has a suitable ratio of dark/photo impedance and the dark impedance is between 10\+5～10\+6Ωcm\+2 at the low operation frequency(200Hz) of LCLV.

Abstract:The effect of a light blocking layer in the liquid crystal light valve (LCLV) was analyzed here, and an idea of using the nc-Si:H film as the light blocking layer of LCLV was first reported and realized for the large-screen projection display. The a-Si:H photoconductor layer and nc-Si:H light blocking layer were continuously prepared by the glow discharge PCVD method, and the structure as well as the photoelectric characteristics of the nc-Si:H film under different deposition conditions were investigated. The a-Si:H film combined with the nc-Si:H film deposited sequentially forms a heterojunction a-Si:H/nc-Si:H which improves the performances of devices in many aspects.
Simulation of electric-optical properties of homotropic aligned liquid crystal light valves (LCLV)

Abstract:The electro-optic performance as a function of light-valve parameters and operating conditions was numerically simulated based on a 4×4 matrix formalism. The effects of liquid crystal thickness, incident angle and pretilt angle on the LCLV performance were discussed. The director configuration and electrooptic performance of a homotropic aligned LCLV as the function of light valve parameters and operating conditions were calculated based on Oseen and Frank's continuum theory of nematic liquid crystal and generalized torque balance equation at the interfaces. On these bases, the effects of anchoring strength of nematic liquid crystal (NLC)-wall and pretilt angle on the director configuration and then on the electro-optic performance of LCLV were discussed.

Abstract:A ferroelectric liquid-crystal (FLC) display was optimized as a transflective liquid-crystal display (LCD). In this configuration, the single-cell-gap approach was considered. The optimized configuration exhibits a high contrast ratio, wide viewing angles, and achromatic (black/white) switching in both the transmissive and reflective modes. Because no double-cell-gap structure, no subpixel separation, and no patterning polarizers and retarders are included in the configuration, the configuration is easy to fabricate and also possess a perfect dark state. This configuration is also suitable for bistable applications.

Abstract:The design of liquid crystal cell is an important factor to determine the display quality of LCoS display device. The goal of this paper is to gain VGA field sequential color (FSC) LCoS device used for near-to-eye system. The characteristics of optics and electrooptics for the twist nematic liquid crystal material and the material requirements of the FSC LCoS were studied. The LCOS liquid crystal cell optimized by dynamic parameter space method had an uniform reflectivity (about 90%) for the light with wave length from 450nm to 650nm. Both considering the electrooptic response curve of liquid crystal and the relationship between the contrast ratio and pixel size, we determined to use high speed twist nematic liquid crystal working in normally white mode. The liquid crystal cell gap and the pixel size were determined as 2.5um and 12um, respectively. The VGA FSC LCoS device was fabricated with SMIC 0.35um CMOS process and filled with LC-A liquid crystal of Merck in Varitronix. The measurement showed that the response time of liquid crystal from light to dark was 1.8ms and from dark to light was 4.4ms. The contrast ratio is bigger than 50:1. The LCoS displays well.

Abstract:Liquid crystal light valve(LCLV) using an a-Si:H/μc-Si:H heterostructure as the photosensor and the nematic liquid crystal as the modulator has been firstly presented for large screen projection display. The a-Si:H photoconductor and μc-Si:H light blocking layer were prepared by a modified glow discharge CVD method. The optoelectric and structure properties of the μc-Si:H films deposited at different deposition conditions have been studied. The a-Si:H film and the continuously deposited pc-Si:H film possibly form an a-Si:H/μc-Si:H heterojunction. The electrical and optoelectric properties of the heterojunction has been studied. LCLV using a-Si:H/μc-Si:H heterostructure has shown that the most aspects of the device performance can be improved.

Abstract:An ITO/a-Si:H photosensor has been used in a near IR sensitive LCLV. In preparation of the photosensor, two main problems have been solved. One is the enhancement of IR transmittance of ITO; the other is improvement of the ratio of photo/dark conductivity in a-Si:H in the near IR range. As a result, IR transmittance as high as 80% and ratio of photo/dark conductivity larger than one order of magnitude are obtained. Images converted from near IR scenery by the LCLV are observed.

Abstract:The color-separation multilayer systems operating in s-polarization or p-polarization components for thin film transistor liquid crystal display projectors were described. To reduce the trans-mission band ripples of the dichroic filters, the design for using s-polarization component was emphasized. Some experimental details and measuring results were reported.

Abstract:The opto-electronic properties of molecular beam epitaxy (MBE)technique grown by ZnSSe thin films on indium-tin-oxide (ITO) glass substrates were investigated. Ultraviolet (UV) photo-responsivity as high as 0.01 A/W and three orders of visible rejection power are demonstrated at room temperature. The results of d.c. resistivity measurements reveal that the dark resistivity of the ZnSSe thin films decreases as the crystal size increases and reaches a value of 4.3× 1011 Ω @ cm for a thin film grown at the optimised substrate temperature, 2900C. The results of a.c. impedance measurements performed in the frequency range of 40Hz to 4000 Hz further indicate that the impedance of this alloy thin film can provide a good matching with the liquid crystal layer of a liquid crystal light valve (LCLV) for UV imaging applications.

Abstract:A kind of liquid crystal light valve (LCLV) based on a CdS-CdSe photoconductor that can convert visible image to infrared at video rate is introduced in this paper. A prototype of a visible to infrared dynamic image converting system using a CO2 laser as the infrared source is built with this device. Results of the converter are presented in this paper.

Abstract:The structural characteristics and optical and electrical properties of molecular-beam-epitaxy (MBE) grown ZnS0.8Se0.2 thin films on indium-tin-oxide (ITO) glass substrates were investigated in this work. The X-ray diffraction (XRD)results indicated that high quality polycrystalline ZnS0.8Se0.2 thin film grown at the optimized temperature had a preferred orientation along the (111) planes. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM) cross-sectional micrograph of the sample showed a well defined columnar structure with lateral crystal dimension in the order ofa few hundred angstroms. Ultraviolet (UV) photoresponsivity as high as 0.01 A/W had been demonstrated and for wavelengths longer than 450 nm, the response was down from the peak response by more than 3 orders of magnitude. The thin ZnS0.8Se0.2 photosensor layer, with a wide energy gap and anisotropic electrical property, makes a transmission UV liquid crystal light valve ( LCLV) with high resolution feasible.

Abstract:A Visible-to-infrared dynamic image converting system built for infrared simulation is described in this paper. It adopts CdS-CdSe photoconductive thin-film type liquid crystal light valve (LCLV) as the key converting device. The video-rate conversion of visible image to infrared (8approx.12 ��m) is realized. The contrast ratio of 9:1, response time of 40 ms and limiting resolution of 10 1p/mm have been reached.
