Abstract:A series of PdNi/SiO2 bimetallic nanoparticles were synthesized using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and 2,6-bis(5,6-dimethyl-1,2,4-triazine-3-yl) pyridine (BTP) as ligands through sol-gel method. BTP was proved to be an effective ligand that can delay the reduction of palladium (II), which helps the formation of palladium-rich shell bimetallic nanoparticles. Pd3Ni7-BTP/SiO2 exhibited the best catalytic performance (TOF=180h−1) among all the catalysts for hydrogenation of nitrobenzene under ambient conditions and was successfully reused for at least five times without loss in activity. The excellent catalytic performance could be ascribed to the small nanoparticle size (2.14nm) and the palladium-rich shell structure it bears.
Plant-Mediated Synthesis of Ag–Pd Alloy Nanoparticles and Their Application As Catalyst Toward Selective Hydrogenation

Abstract:Herein, we reported the green synthesis of Ag-Pd alloy nanoparticles (NPs) using the aqueous extract of the Cacumen platycladi leaves as well as their application as catalyst for hydrogenation of 1,3-butadiene. The biosynthetic NPs were characterized to confirm the nature of alloy by UV-vis spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The possible functional groups responsible for the reduction and protection of NPs were identified through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The results revealed that biomolecules like saccharides, polyphenols, or carbonyl compounds were related to the reduction process, and the (NH)C=O groups were responsible for the stabilization of the NPs. Furthermore, the as-formed Ag-Pd bimetallic-supported catalysts especially Ag1Pd3/gamma-Al2O3 was found to possess excellent catalytic performance toward hydrogenation of 1,3-butadiene. A butene yield of 84.9% was obtained, which was remarkably enhanced when compared with monometallic counterparts. Moreover, the activity of it maintained stability within 12 h of durable experiments.

Abstract:Selective hydrogenation of 1,3-butadiene to form butene is an important tool for the removal of 1,3-butadiene which is a by-product of olefin production. AgPd bimetallic catalysts improved the butene selective, but its expensive cost is still an urgent problem. In this study, we introduced a third inexpensive metal Ni or Cu to replace part of the noble metal Pd or Ag in a common AgPd catalyst and studied the influence of the introduction on the hydrogenation reaction by DFT. Compared with the Ag3Pd and AgPd3 alloys, AgCuPd2 and Ag2NiPd hardly changed the adsorption energy of 1,3-butadiene and hydrogen but lowered the butene adsorption energy, which indicates that the addition of Cu or Ni metals can improve the butene selectivity. By calculating the reaction pathways, it was found that the energy barriers of 1,3-butadiene hydrogenation to butene on AgCuPd2 and Ag2NiPd was lower than that of Ag3Pd and AgPd3 alloys, while the energy barriers of butene further hydrogenation to butane was much larger than the desorption energy of butene. The partial replacement of Ag or Pd atom of AgPd alloys with Cu or Ni not only reduces the catalyst cost but also improves the conversion and selectivity of the hydrogenation reaction.

Abstract:We report the green synthesis of ZnO-supported Ni-Pd alloy nanoparticles for the gas-phase selective hydrogenation of 1,3-butadiene. The supported catalysts were synthesized through a simple bioreduction route using Cinnamomum Camphora leaf extract. We used XRD, SEM, TEM, and energy-dispersive Xray spectroscopy to characterize and verify the nature of the catalysts. The results showed that the size of the Ni-Pd alloy particles was (3.2 +/- 0.7), (3.4 +/- 0.3), and (3.8 +/- 0.6) nm for Ni1Pd1, Ni1Pd3, and Ni3Pd1 respectively. FTIR spectroscopy revealed that the presence of stretching vibrations from C-H, -C=C-, O-H, and -C-O-O groups that remained on the surface and act as stabilizers. The influence of some reaction variables, such as the type of S-Pd (S=Au, Ag, Ni) bimetallic catalyst, the type of metal oxide support, and the reaction temperature, on the hydrogenation activity and selectivity towards total butene (trans-2-butene, 1-butene, and cis-2-butene) is investigated. The bioreduced, supported catalysts showed excellent catalytic activity and selectivity to butene in the selective hydrogenation of 1,3-butadiene. The calculated total butene selectivity was above 80% for all supported S-1-Pd-1 catalysts compared to 46.92% for a monometallic Pd/ZnO catalyst. In addition, the Ni-1-Pd-1/ZnO catalyst presented the best butene yield of 88.90 %, which was 1.9 times that of the Pd/ZnO catalyst. Moreover, it remained stable over a 10 h durability experiment.

Abstract:Background: The selective hydrogenation of 1, 3-butadiene values in industrial application and scientific research, and Pd catalysts are widely used in this reaction. However, it is still a challenge to achieve high butenes selectivity at a high conversion rate. Methods: Here we report the N self-doped 3D macroporous pollen-like carbon (pollen-C) derived from the biomass of rape pollen to achieve higher butenes selectivity at high conversion rates after Pd loading. Significant findings: Experimental results reveal that the properties of pollen-C, especially the content and type of N doping, will influence the particle size and the valence of the supported Pd, thereby affecting the catalytic performance. As a result of more N dopant and unique macroporous structure, the Pd/pollen-C-500 showed better butenes selectivity of 95% at 80 degrees C than Pd/commercial activated carbon (Pd/AC).

Abstract:Nowadays, the rational design of high-performance catalysts with desirable resistance to metal leaching has become the principal challenge in the hydrogenation of nitrile butadiene rubber. In the present work, the Pd-Pt bimetallic alloy nanocatalyst exhibits an outstanding hydrogenation degree of 99.0%, obviously higher than that of the conventional monometallic Pd/SiO 2 catalyst with the same Pd content (92.9%), accompanied by approximately 100% selectivity to C=C bonds. The results reveal that electron transfer from Pt to Pd confirms that the Pd species are in a rich-electron state, which boosts hydrogen activation and improves catalytic activity. Additionally, the incorporation of inactive Pt species promotes the formation of uniformly dispersed Pd-Pt alloy nanoparticles. The incorporation of inactive Pt species can enhance the metal-support interaction, reducing the residual metal content in hydrogenated nitrile butadiene rubber. The current research demonstrates a simple procedure for designing efficient bimetallic catalysts for the hydrogenation of unsaturated elastomer.

Abstract:Improving the catalytic selectivity of Pd catalysts is of key importance for various industrial processes and remains a challenge so far. Given the unique properties of single-atom catalysts, isolating contiguous Pd atoms into a single-Pd site with another metal to form intermetallic structures is an effective way to endow Pd with high catalytic selectivity and to stabilize the single site with the intermetallic structures. Based on density functional theory modeling, we demonstrate that the (110) surface of Pm3̅m PdIn with single-atom Pd sites shows high selectivity for semihydrogenation of acetylene, whereas the (111) surface of P4/mmm Pd3In with Pd trimer sites shows low selectivity. This idea has been further validated by experimental results that intermetallic PdIn nanocrystals mainly exposing the (110) surface exhibit much higher selectivity for acetylene hydrogenation than Pd3In nanocrystals mainly exposing the (111) surface (92% vs 21% ethylene selectivity at 90 °C). This work provides insight for rational design of bimetallic metal catalysts with specific catalytic properties.

Abstract:Robust Pd nanoparticles were novel and successfully synthesized on the γ-Al2O3 support by a simple and ecofriendly route through the assistance of CO2. The unsupported and supported Pd nanoparticles were initially characterized with a combination of several techniques such as powder X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersion X-ray, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The face-centered cubic Pd nanoparticles with uniform dispersion were successfully achieved with the Pd loading ranging from 1 wt% to 5 wt%. The resulting Pd nanoparticles (Pd/Al2O3) catalysts were found to be efficient and versatile for the hydrogenation of biomass-derived platform chemicals furfural and levulinic acid under very mild conditions, respectively, showing enhanced catalytic performance.

Abstract:We reported that atomically dispersed Pd on graphene can be fabricated using the atomic layer deposition technique. Aberration-corrected high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy and X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy both confirmed that isolated Pd single atoms dominantly existed on the graphene support. In selective hydrogenation of 1,3-butadiene, the single-atom Pd1/graphene catalyst showed about 100% butenes selectivity at 95% conversion at a mild reaction condition of about 50 °C, which is likely due to the changes of 1,3-butadiene adsorption mode and enhanced steric effect on the isolated Pd atoms. More importantly, excellent durability against deactivation via either aggregation of metal atoms or carbonaceous deposits during a total 100 h of reaction time on stream was achieved. Therefore, the single-atom catalysts may open up more opportunities to optimize the activity, selectivity, and durability in selective hydrogenation reactions.

Abstract:This communication reports an efficient bimetallic catalyst by incorporating Au atoms onto the surface of palladium nanocrystals via a simple solution phase surface alloying process. While retaining the original surface structure of Pd, the surface alloy catalyst shows the highest activity and the best selectivity toward alkyne semi-hydrogenation reactions in comparison to commercial Pd/C and Lindlar catalysts. This simple surface alloying process could be easily extended to the optimization of commercial Pd/C catalysts to significantly improve their catalytic performance. The surface modification approach proposed in this work not only provides a new direction in engineering efficient metal nanocatalysts for fine chemical industries, but also improves our understanding of bimetallic nanocrystal surfaces.

Abstract:The heterogeneous nanocatalyst based on palladium (Pd) is one of the most preferable choices for catalytic hydrogenation reactions as the adsorption and dissociation of hydrogen molecules (H2) are almost spontaneous on Pd surface to form the adsorbed H atoms (Had). However, in terms of alkyne semihydrogenation, it remains a grand challenge to optimize both the activity and selectivity of reactions using bare Pd catalysts as the case is largely complicated by the excessive Had produced from rapid H2 dissociation and the strong Pd‐H binding. In this communication, a well‐designed model is developed for seeking a selective semihydrogenation catalyst based on surface lattice engineering. In the proposed model, the ultrathin atomic layer of AuPd shell is grown on the Au nanocubes. The Au nanocubes provide specific facets as substrates for hosting catalytic sites, which can also provide information for further lattice engineering design. While Pd atoms are the active centers for hydrogenation reactions in the nanostructures, alloying Pd atoms with Au in the shells can significantly alter the binding of Had to metals. As such, the activity and selectivity in catalytic alkyne semihydrogenation can be substantially maneuvered by tailoring the atomic arrangement of Pd and Au on surface. As a proof of concept, the Au@AuPd nanocatalyst with a surface Pd/Au ratio of 1:4 achieves a 98.9% semihydrogenation selectivity with a conversion of 98.2% in the 2‐methyl‐3‐butyn‐2‐ol (MBY) hydrogenation reaction.

Abstract:Different amounts of Pd, Pt and Pt-Pd alloy nanoparitcles were deposited on mesoporous carbon nanotube microparticles through an easy polyol reduction method. Pt-Pd bimetallic nanoparticles of varied Pt/Pd molar ratios have alloy structures that are identified by XRD, TEM with EDX and XPS. The activities of five different nanocatalysts were evaluated for the hydrogenation of allyl alcohol, and the alloy nanocatalyst showed superior activity at high Pd loading. More importantly, the synthesized nanocatalysts could be easily recovered completely from the final reaction solution via conventional filtration.

Abstract:We report nanoporous Pd100-xAux (x = 0, 25, 50, 75, 100; np-PdAu) bimetallic catalysts fabricated by electrochemically dealloying isomorphous Pd20-yAuyNi80 (y = 0, 5, 15, 20) precursors. The chemical composition of the nanoporous bimetallic catalysts can be precisely controlled by predesigning Pd/Au ratios in the ternary alloys. Dealloying at an appropriate potential for each alloy can selectively leach Ni away while the Pd and Au remain intact to form a geometrically controllable nanoporous structure. The electrocatalysis of the np-PdAu shows evident dependence on the Au/Pd atomic ratio, and the np-Pd75Au25 bimetallic catalyst shows superior electrocatalytic performance toward ethanol electrooxidation in comparison with commercial Pt/C, np-Pd, and other np-PdAu alloys. Since there are no obvious geometric shape and pore size disparities among the np-PdAu samples, the dealloyed catalysts also provide an ideal system to explore the chemical origins of the excellent catalytic properties of bimetallic catalysts. © 2013 American Chemical Society.

Abstract:Selective hydrogenation of 1,3-butadiene (BD) is regarded as the most promising route for removing BD from butene streams. Bimetallic Pd–Ni catalysts with changed Pd/Ni molar ratios and monometallic Pd catalysts were synthesized using two differently structured metal-organic framework supports: UiO-66 and UiO-66-NH2. The effects of the structure of support and the molar ratio of Pd/Ni on the catalytic property of selective BD hydrogenation were studied. The Pd–Ni bimetallic supported catalysts, PdNi/UiO-66 (1:1) and PdNi/UiO-66-NH2 (1:1), exhibited fine catalytic property at low temperature. Compared with UiO-66, UiO-66-NH2 with a certain number of alkaline sites could reduce the catalytic activity for the BD hydrogenation reaction. However, the alkaline environment of UiO-66-NH2 is helpful to improve the butene selectivity. PdNi/UiO-66-NH2 (1:1) catalyst presented better stability than PdNi/UiO-66 (1:1) under the reaction conditions, caused by the strong interaction between the –NH2 groups of UiO-66-NH2 and PdNi NPs. Moreover, the PdNi/UiO-66-NH2 (1:1) catalyst presented good reproducibility in the hydrogenation of BD. These findings afford a beneficial guidance for the design and preparation of efficient catalysts for selective BD hydrogenation.

Abstract:Supported metal single-atom catalysts (SACs) with maximized metal atom efficiency and unique catalytic properties have drawn tremendous attention in the catalysis field. In this work, we reported that in selective hydrogenation of 1,3-butadiene, graphene supported Pd-1 single atoms, synthesized by atomic layer deposition, exhibited expressively 100% butenes selectivity at 100% conversion at near ambient temperature, regardless of hydrogen partial pressures. The hydrogen reaction order was found to be about 1.2, indicating that hydrogenation dissociation is the rate-determining step. Combining with other structural characterization techniques, in situ X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy suggests that the Pd-1 single atom likely bonds to the graphene support through three Pd-C and one Pd-O-C coordinations. Density functional theory calculations show that 1,3-butadiene adsorbs on Pd-1 via a mono-pi adsorption mode (-0.98 eV), much stronger than that of H-2 (-0.30 eV), which makes Pd-1 to be predominantly covered with a 1,3-butadiene molecule during reaction, consistent very well with the results of H-D exchange reaction. Facilitated by the bridging O atom in the Pd-O-C coordination, H-2 dissociates at the 1,3-butadiene covered Pd-1 atom in the heterolytic way, then hydrogenates the adsorbed 1,3-butadiene molecule by following the pseudo Horiuti-Polanyi mechanism. Distinct from its adsorption on extended Pd surfaces, such mono-pi adsorption of 1,3-butadiene on Pd-1 favors 1-butene formation, but impedes the secondary hydrogenation to butane owing to intensified steric hindrance, thus yielding the expressively high butenes selectivity over Pd-1 SAC.
