Abstract:This article reports a systematic study on the seed-mediated growth of PdAu bimetallic nanocrystals with a variety of controlled morphologies. The key to the success of this synthesis is to manipulate the reaction kinetics by controlling a set of experimental parameters, which include the amount of ascorbic acid used as a reductant, the amount of HAuCl4 as a precursor to elemental Au, the reaction temperature, and the type of seeds employed. Starting from Pd nanocubes of 18 nm in edge length, PdAu bimetallic nanocrystals with a number of morphologies, which includes hybrid dimers, coreshell nanocubes with flat faces, and coreshell nanocubes with concave faces could all be obtained by simply speeding up the reduction of HAuCl4. The same synthesis and control could also be extended to seeds based on Pd octahedrons. For the first time, it was possible to generate Pd@Au coreshell nanocubes and octahedrons with concave faces. The Pd@Au coreshell nanocubes with concave faces exhibited enhanced activity in catalyzing the oxidization of ascorbic acid relative to their counterparts with flat faces or the cubic Pd seeds.

Abstract:The selective hydrogenation of halogenated nitrobenzene (HNB) has been a great important chemical reaction in the fine chemical productions. In this study, the effect of metal particle size on the selective hydrogenation of HNB over Pd/C catalysts has been extensively investigated through the combination of theoretical (density functional theory calculations, DFT) and experimental methods. DFT calculations showed that the reaction barriers for dechlorination strongly depend on the type of reaction sites (terrace or edge), while the hydrogenation reaction barriers are nearly the same on different sites, which indicates that Pd nanoparticle size significantly affects the catalyst selectivity. Moreover, Pd nanoparticles with different sizes (from 2.1 to 30 nm) supported on activated carbon were synthesized using the methods developed by our group. In a 500 mL reactor, the selectivity is over 99.90% when the Pd nanoparticles are bigger than 25 nm. Finally, the industrial applications of the proposed catalyst were evaluated in several pilot factories. This study provides useful information on controlling the selectivity of other similar reactions catalyzed by noble-metal nanocatalysts.

Abstract:Nanorings made of noble metals such as Au and Ag have attracted particular interest in plasmonic properties since they allow remarkable tunability of plasmon resonance wavelengths associated with their unique structural features. Unfortunately, most of the syntheses for Au nanorings involve complex procedures and/ or require highly specialized and expensive facilities. Here, we report a seed-mediated approach for selective deposition of Au nanorings on the periphery of Pd seeds with the structure of an ultrathin nanosheet through the island growth mode. In combination with selective etching of Pd nanosheets, Au nanorings are eventually produced. We can control the outer diameter and wall thickness of the nanorings by simply varying the size of the Pd nanosheets and reaction time. By taking the advantage of this size controllability, the nanorings show tunable surface plasmonic properties in the near infrared (NIR) region arising from both the in-plane dipole and face resonance modes. Owing to their good surface plasmonic properties, the nanorings show substantially enhanced surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) performance for rhodamine 6G, and are therefore confirmed as good SERS substrates to detect trace amounts of molecules.

Abstract:Ru-based nanoplates have received considerable attention in recent years because of their attractive catalytic properties originating from their unique two-dimensional structure. However, the synthesis of Ru-based nanoplates, especially for the thickness control at the atomic level, still remains challenging. Here we report the synthesis of Pd@Ru core–shell nanoplates, in which Ru atoms exhibit a face-centered cubic (fcc) structure rather than a hexagonal close-packed (hcp) structure of bulk Ru. The thickness of Pd@Ru nanoplates and even the crystal structure of Ru shells can be tuned by simply varying the amount of the Ru precursor. The Pd@Ru nanoplates first exhibit a remarkable increase in specific activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with Ru shell thickness and then have a dramatic decrease when the thickness of the nanoplates reaches 2.6 nm due to the structure transition of Ru from fcc to hcp. Among them, the Pd@Ru nanoplates with a thickness of 2.3 nm exhibit the optimal HER activity with good stability, even outperforming commercial Ru/C and state-of-the-art Pt/C catalysts in alkaline solution.

Abstract:The catalytic activity of noble-metal nanocrystals is mainly determined by their sizes and the facets exposed on the surface. For single crystals, it has been demonstrated that the Pd(100) surface is catalytically more active than both Pd(110) and Pd(111) surfaces for the CO oxidation reaction. Here we report the synthesis of Pd nanocrystals enclosed by {100} facets with controllable sizes in the range of 6–18 nm by manipulating the rate of reduction of the precursor. UV-vis spectroscopy studies indicate that the rate of reduction of Na 2 PdCl 4 can be controlled by adjusting the concentrations of Br − and Cl − ions added to the reaction mixture. Pd nanocrystals with different sizes were immobilized on ZnO nanowires and evaluated as catalysts for CO oxidation. We found that the activity of this catalytic system for CO oxidation showed a strong dependence on the nanocrystal size. When the size of the Pd nanocrystals was reduced from 18 nm to 6 nm, the maximum conversion rate was significantly enhanced by a factor of ∼10 and the corresponding maximum conversion temperature was lowered by ∼80 °C.

Abstract:Despite a few reports on the synthesis of ultrathin 2D nanosheets made of noble metals, it still remains a tremendous challenge to generate their ultrathin hollowed nanostructures, which are of particular interest in highly active catalysis due to their unique structural features. Here, the synthesis of ultrathin 2D Pd nanorings is reported with a hollow interior by selective epitaxial growth of Pd atoms on the periphery of the as-preformed Pd nanosheets in combination with oxidative etching. This approach can be extended to fabricate Pd-based bimetallic ultrathin nanorings such as Pd-Pt. The Pd nanorings exhibit substantially enhanced activity toward the hydrogenation of p-nitrophenol, which is 2.2 and 33.4 times higher than that of the Pd nanosheets and commercial Pd black, respectively. Significantly, the Pd nanorings are highly stable with only less than 11% loss in activity compared to 45.7% loss of the Pd nanosheets and 72.2% loss of the Pd black after ten cycles.

Abstract:Pt-based multimetallic nanorings with a hollow structure are attractive as advanced catalysts due to their fantastic structure feature. However, the general method for the synthesis of such unique nanostructures is still lack. Here we report the synthesis of Pd@PtM (M = Rh, Ni, Pd, Cu) multimetallic nanorings by selective epitaxial growth of Pt alloyed shells on the periphery of Pd nanoplates in combination with oxidative etching of partial Pd in the interior. In situ generation of CO and benzoic acid arising from interfacial catalytic reactions between Pd nanoplates and benzaldehyde are critical to achieve high-quality Pt-based multimetallic nanorings. Specifically, the in-situ generated CO promotes the formation of Pt alloyed shells and their epitaxial growth on Pd nanoplates. In addition, the as-formed benzoic acid and residual oxygen are responsible for selective oxidative etching of partial Pd in the interior. When evaluated as electrocatalysts, the Pd@PtRh nanorings exhibit remarkably enhanced activity and stability for ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) compared to the Pd@PtRh nanoplates and commercial Pt/C due to their hollow nanostructures.

Abstract:Pt-based multimetallic core-shell nanoplates have received great attention as advanced catalysts, but the synthesis is still challenging. Here we report the synthesis of multimetallic Pd@PtM (M = Ni, Rh, Ru) nanoplates including Pd@Pt nanoplates, in which Pt or Pt alloy shells with controlled thickness epitaxially grow on plate-like Pd seeds. The key to achieve high-quality Pt-based multimetallic nanoplates is in situ generation of CO through interfacial catalytic reactions associated with Pd nanoplates and benzyl alcohol. In addition, the accurate control in a trace amount of CO is also of great importance for conformal growth of multimetallic core-shell nanoplates. The Pd@PtNi nanoplates exhibit substantially improved activity and stability for methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) compared to the Pd@Pt nanoplates and commercial Pt catalysts due to the advantages arising from plate-like, core-shell, and alloy structures.

Abstract:The heterogeneous nanocatalyst based on palladium (Pd) is one of the most preferable choices for catalytic hydrogenation reactions as the adsorption and dissociation of hydrogen molecules (H2) are almost spontaneous on Pd surface to form the adsorbed H atoms (Had). However, in terms of alkyne semihydrogenation, it remains a grand challenge to optimize both the activity and selectivity of reactions using bare Pd catalysts as the case is largely complicated by the excessive Had produced from rapid H2 dissociation and the strong Pd‐H binding. In this communication, a well‐designed model is developed for seeking a selective semihydrogenation catalyst based on surface lattice engineering. In the proposed model, the ultrathin atomic layer of AuPd shell is grown on the Au nanocubes. The Au nanocubes provide specific facets as substrates for hosting catalytic sites, which can also provide information for further lattice engineering design. While Pd atoms are the active centers for hydrogenation reactions in the nanostructures, alloying Pd atoms with Au in the shells can significantly alter the binding of Had to metals. As such, the activity and selectivity in catalytic alkyne semihydrogenation can be substantially maneuvered by tailoring the atomic arrangement of Pd and Au on surface. As a proof of concept, the Au@AuPd nanocatalyst with a surface Pd/Au ratio of 1:4 achieves a 98.9% semihydrogenation selectivity with a conversion of 98.2% in the 2‐methyl‐3‐butyn‐2‐ol (MBY) hydrogenation reaction.

Abstract:Hexagonal Pd nanosheets with extremely thin thickness are synthesized in high yields by reducing the Pd salt precursor in N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF) containing tungsten hexacarbonyl (W(CO)(6)), citric acid (CA), and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). During the reaction, W(CO)(6) spontaneously decomposes to W particles and CO, serving as reducing and capping agents in the synthesis of Pd nanosheets, respectively. We found that the use of CA and CTAB is both beneficial to promote the formation of hexagonal Pd nanosheets with stacking faults. In addition, the edge length of the Pd nanosheets can be simply tuned by varying the amount of CA fed in the synthesis. Such nanosheets can be further grown by subsequent seeded growth with as-preformed Pd nanosheets as the seeds. The Pd nanosheets with different edge lengths exhibit tunable localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) in the range of 820-1067 nm, and thus hold great potential in the field of plasmon-enhanced catalysis.

Abstract:Hierarchical hybrid metal nanostructures with complex architectures are attracting considerable attention because of their tunable properties, novel functions, and promising applications. In this work, the controllable synthesis of unique hierarchical Au/PdAg heterostructures consisting of regularly aligned PdAg nanosheets epitaxially grown on Au nanorods (Au/PdAg NRNSs) was realized in the presence of a mixture of dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). If DTAB was used as the single surfactant, PdAg nanodendrite-tipped Au nanorods (Au/PdAg NRNDs) were produced, whereas Pd nanoblock-tipped Au nanorods (Au/Pd NRNBs) were obtained in the absence of Ag+ ions. It was revealed that a desirable combination of appropriate DTAB and CTAB concentrations is crucial to the formation of the unusual Au/PdAg NRNSs. When the three nano-heterostructures were used as catalysts for the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction, the Au-PdAg NRNSs exhibited the best catalytic performance. Furthermore, all of the three heterostructures showed pronounced plasmon-enhanced electrocatalytic activity with the Au/PdAg NRNSs exhibiting the best photo-assisted electrocatalytic activity. This work may open new avenues toward rational design and controllable synthesis of well-defined heterostructured nanoparticles with novel architectures and promising applications.
Nanosized Pd@Ag heterojunction with tunable shapes: Morphological modulation for improving plasma-mediated catalytic hydrogen evolution

Abstract:Catalytic ability of bi-metal hybrid nanoagents largely depends on their phase constitution and morphology, also bearing a close correlation to the fabrication process. We herein design and develop a modified polyol protocol with inorganic ion induction for rationally constructing Ag nanoagents with tunable shapes (nanowire, nanocube, and nanoparticle), followed by evenly anchoring of stepwise reduced Pd nanograins on the surface of Ag nanoagents to foster Ag core - Pd shell (i.e. Pd@Ag) nanosized heterostructure. A home-made photochemical reaction device is used to scientifically evaluate the catalytic ability of the Pd@Ag nanoagents on hydrolyzing ammonia borane to evolve hydrogen gas. The ample characterization reveals that the fabricated Ag nanoagents hold the expected regular and uniform shapes, with 10–15 nm thick Pd layer cladded on their surfaces. The particular shapes of the Ag nanoagents can be duly manipulated via the induction of inorganic ions, and the thickness and compactness of the Pd shell can also be suitably regulated by controlling reduction duration. The verified formation of electron synergistic effect among the both metals is favorable to elevate the catalytic ability. The bimetal Pd@Ag nanoagents perform the superior catalytic activity under visible light irradiation, far exceeding that of the respective monometal counterparts, with the order of catalytic activity: Pd@Ag-NWs > Pd@Ag-NCs > Pd@Ag-NPs. The hydrolysis reaction at the given conditions is confirmed to be quasi first-order reaction, with the apparent activation energy of 53.44 kJ·mol−1 and TOF value of 47.04 min−1. The Pd@Ag-NWs catalyst behaves satisfactory stability, with 87.8 % initial catalytic activity retained after five cyclic use.

Abstract:Modulation of geometric and electronic structures of supported Pd-based catalysts by forming atomically ordered intermetallic phases enables an effective way to optimize catalytic performance. However, the synthesis of small-sized Pd-based intermetallic nanoparticle catalysts with improved mass-based activity remains formidable challenges, since high-temperature annealing generally required for atom ordering inevitably leads to severe metal sintering and thus large crystallites. Here, we present a bulky nanodiamond-confined method to prepare sub-5 nm Pd3Pb intermetallic nanocatalysts by mitigating metal sintering at high temperatures, which is induced by the electronic interactions between metal and defect-rich graphene shells reinforced by diamond cores in the bulky nanodiamond support. The prepared small-sized Pd3Pb intermetallic catalyst displays a high activity with a turnover frequency of 932 h−1 for the semihydrogenation of phenylacetylene under mild conditions (room temperature, 3 bar H2), along with a high selectivity of > 96% to styrene near the complete conversion of phenylacetylene.

Abstract:<p>Alloy and small size nanostructures are favorable to catalytical performance, but not to surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) applications. Integrating SERS and catalytic activity into the nanocrystals with both alloy and small size structures is of great interest in fabrication of SERS platform to in situ monitor catalytical reaction. Herein, we report a facile method to synthesize trimetallic nanoflowers ( NFs) with both SERS and catalytic activities, through simultaneous selective growth of Ag and Pd on Au core to form highly-branched alloy shell. These nanocrystals have the properties of small sizes, defects abundance, and highly-dispersed alloy shell which offer superior catalytic activity, while the merits of monodisperse, excellent stability, and highly-branched shell and core/alloy-shell structure promise the enhanced SERS activity. We further studied their growth mechanisms, and found that the ratio of Ag to Pd, sizes of Au core, and surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide together determine this special structure. Using this as-synthesized nanocrystals, a monolayer bifunctional platform with both SERS and catalytical activity was fabricated through self-assembly at air/water interface, and applied to in situ SERS monitoring the reaction process of Pd-catalyzed hydrogenation of 4-nitrothiophenol to 4-aminothiophenol.</p>

Abstract:In this paper, monodisperse Pd nanocrystals were immobilized on previously reported carbon nanospheres via in situ adsorption and reduction. In this protocol, no excess reductant and capping reagents were necessary, which made the surface of the as-prepared nanocatalysts very clean. Using sodium tetrachloropalladate(II) as the metal precursor yielded palladium nanocrystals with a size around 5 nm regardless of the metal loading, while the use of palladium chloride resulted in a size increase to 18.1 nm. Moreover, the additives used during preparation have been proven to be of great importance in controlling the average particle size. It was suggested that the pattern of the adsorbed palladium ions or the surface environment of support was greatly influenced. Strong adsorption of the palladium ions on the carbon spheres led to a decrease in size. The nanocrystals exhibited excellent catalytic activity for transfer hydrogenation under ambient conditions. The conversion was 83.1% to 100% for several nitroaromatics with moderate to excellent selectivity. More importantly, these nanocatalysts are promising for renewable catalysis owing to their sustainable support, green catalyst fabrication and ease of handling.

Abstract:Highly porous tri-metallic AgxAuyPdz networks with a sub-monolayer bimetallic Au-Pd nanoparticle coating were synthesized via a designed galvanic replacement reaction of Ag nanosponges suspended in mixed solutions of HAuCl4 and K2PdCl4. The resulting networks' ligaments have a rough surface with bimetallic nanoparticles and nanopores due to removal of Ag. The surface morphology and composition are adjustable by the temperature and mixed solutions' concentration. Very low combined Au and Pd atomic percentage (1-x) where x is atomic percentage of Ag leads to sub-monolayer nanoparticle coverings allowing a large number of active boundaries, nanopores, and metal-metal interfaces to be accessible. Optimization of the Au/Pd atomic ratio y/z obtains large surface-enhanced Raman scattering detection sensitivity (at y/z = 5.06) and a higher catalytic activity (at y/z = 3.55) toward reduction reactions as benchmarked with 4-nitrophenol than for most bimetallic catalysts. Subsequent optimization of x (at fixed y/z) further increases the catalytic activity to obtain a superior tri-metallic catalyst, which is mainly attributed to the synergy of several aspects including the large porosity, increased surface roughness, accessible interfaces, and hydrogen absorption capacity of nanosized Pd. This work provides a new concept for scalable synthesis and performance optimization of tri-metallic nanostructures.
