Abstract:In this paper, we establish a moderate deviation principle for stochastic Volterra equation by using the weak convergence approach. A maximal inequality for stochastic integral plays an important role. As an application, we give an interesting example: a stochastic differential equation driven by fractional Brownian motion.

Abstract:The sub-linear expectation or called G-expectation is a non-linear expectation having advantage of modeling non-additive probability problems and the volatility uncertainty in finance. Let $\{X_n;n\ge 1\}$ be a sequence of independent random variables in a sub-linear expectation space $(\Omega , \mathscr {H}, \widehat{\mathbb {E}})$. Denote $S_n=\sum _{k=1}^n X_k$ and $V_n^2=\sum _{k=1}^n X_k^2$. In this paper, a moderate deviation for self-normalized sums, that is, the asymptotic capacity of the event $\{S_n/V_n \ge x_n \}$ for $x_n=o(\sqrt{n})$, is found both for identically distributed random variables and independent but not necessarily identically distributed random variables. As an application, the self-normalized laws of the iterated logarithm are obtained. A Bernstein’s type inequality is also established for proving the law of the iterated logarithm.

Abstract:Zhao (2003a) first established a congruence for any odd prime p>3, S(1,1,1;p)≡−2Bp−3 (mod p), which holds when p=3 evidently. In this paper, we consider finite triple harmonic sum S(α,β,γ,p) (mod p) is considered for all positive integers α,β,γ. We refer to w=α+β+γ as the weight of the sum, and show that if w is even, S(α,β,γ,p)≡0 (mod p) for p≥w+3; if w is odd S(α,γ,γ,p)≡rBp−w (mod p) for p≥w, here r is an explicit rational number independent of p. A congruence of Catalan number is obtained as a special case.

Abstract:Recently, Dixit et al. [24] established a very elegant generalization of Hardy's theorem concerning the infinitude of zeros that the Riemann zeta function possesses at its critical line. By introducing a general transformation formula for the theta function involving the Bessel and modified Bessel functions of the first kind, we extend their result to a class of Dirichlet series satisfying Hecke's functional equation. In the process, we also find new generalizations of classical identities in Analytic number theory.

Abstract:The term moderate deviations is often used in the literature to mean a class of large deviation principles that, in some sense, fills the gap between a convergence in probability of some random variables to a constant, and a weak convergence to a centered Gaussian distribution (when such random variables are properly centered and rescaled). We talk about noncentral moderate deviations when the weak convergence is towards a non-Gaussian distribution. In this paper we prove a noncentral moderate deviation result for the bivariate sequence of sums and maxima of independent and identically distributed random variables bounded from above. We also prove a result where the random variables are not bounded from above, and the maxima are suitably normalized. Finally, we prove a moderate deviation result for sums of partial minima of independent and identically distributed exponential random variables.

Moderate deviation principles and Mod-Gaussian convergence for lacunary trigonometric sums

Abstract:Classical works of Kac, Salem and Zygmund, and Erdős and Gál have shown that lacunary trigonometric sums despite their dependency structure behave in various ways like sums of independent and identically distributed random variables. For instance, they satisfy a central limit theorem and a law of the iterated logarithm. Those results have only recently been complemented by large deviation principles by Aistleitner, Gantert, Kabluchko, Prochno, and Ramanan, showing that interesting phenomena occur on the large deviation scale that are not visible in the classical works. This raises the question on what scale such phenomena kick in. In this paper, we provide a first step towards a resolution of this question by studying moderate deviation principles for lacunary trigonometric sums. We show that no arithmetic affects are visible between the CLT scaling $\sqrt{n}$ and a scaling $n/\log(n)$ that is only a logarithmic gap away from the large deviations scale. To obtain our results, inspired by the notion of a dependency graph, we introduce correlation graphs and use the method of cumulants. In this work we also obtain results on the mod-Gaussian convergence using different tools.

Abstract:The questions of the measure and finding open intervals in certain sets of sums and products of elements of the middle third Cantor set (or a variant of it), have generated considerable interest recently. A broad general framework that makes it possible to deal with these questions was outlined by Astels. The question of finding the measure of the product of the middle third Cantor set was considered recently in an article by Athreya, Reznick and Tyson. Astels' methods apply to product sets upon considering a generalized logarithmic Cantor set, while Athreya, Reznick and Tyson's methods become difficult in dealing with sums or products of $m$'th powers as $m$ becomes large. With a new elementary dynamical technique, we can deal with both the questions of sums and products in a satisfactory way, and the proofs are of the same level of complexity as that of an elementary proof of the fact that the sum of two copies of the middle third Cantor set is $[0,2]$. Further, some observations are made on the question of intersections of one central Cantor set with an affine image of another central Cantor set both with arbitrary parameters.

On the distribution of the error terms in the divisor and circle problems

Abstract:We study the distribution functions of several classical error terms in analytic number theory, focusing on the remainder term in the Dirichlet divisor problem $\Delta(x)$. We first bound the discrepancy between the distribution function of $\Delta(x)$ and that of a corresponding probabilistic random model, improving results of Heath-Brown and Lau. We then determine the shape of its large deviations in a certain uniform range, which we believe to be the limit of our method, given our current knowledge about the linear relations among the $\sqrt{n}$ for square-free positive integers $n$. Finally, we obtain similar results for the error terms in the Gauss circle problem and in the second moment of the Riemann zeta function on the critical line.

Abstract:In this paper, we develop Terence Tao's harmonic analysis method and apply it to restricted sumsets. The well-known Cauchy–Davenport theorem asserts that if ∅≠A, B⊆Z/pZ with p a prime, then |A+B|⩾min{p,|A|+|B|−1}, where A+B={a+b:a∈A,b∈B}. In 2005, Terence Tao gave a harmonic analysis proof of the Cauchy–Davenport theorem, by applying a new form of the uncertainty principle on Fourier transform. We modify Tao's method so that it can be used to prove the following extension of the Erdős–Heilbronn conjecture: If A,B,S are non-empty subsets of Z/pZ with p a prime, then |{a+b:a∈A,b∈B,a−b∉S}|⩾min{p,|A|+|B|−2|S|−1}.

Abstract:In terms of several summation and transformation formulas for basic hypergeometric series, two forms of the Chinese remainder theorem for coprime polynomials, the creative microscoping method introduced by Guo and Zudilin, Guo and Li's lemma, and El Bachraoui's lemma, we establish some $q$-supercongruences for multiple basic hypergeometric series modulo the fifth and sixth powers of a cyclotomic polynomial. In detail, we generalize Guo and Li's two $q$-supercongruences for double basic hypergeometric series, which are related to $q$-analogues of Van Hamme's (C.2) supercongruence and Long's supercongruence, respectively. In addition, we also present two conclusions for double and triple hypergeometric series associated with Van Hamme's (D.2) supercongruence.

The Prime Geodesic Theorem and Bounds for Character Sums

Abstract:We establish the prime geodesic theorem for the modular surface with exponent $\frac{2}{3}+\varepsilon$, improving upon the long-standing exponent $\frac{25}{36}+\varepsilon$ of Soundararajan-Young (2013). This was previously known conditionally on the generalised Lindelöf hypothesis for quadratic Dirichlet $L$-functions. Our argument goes through a well-trodden trail via the automorphic machinery, and refines the techniques of Iwaniec (1984) and Cai (2002) to a maximum extent. A key ingredient is an asymptotic for bilinear forms with a counting function in Kloosterman sums via hybrid Weyl-strength subconvex bounds for quadratic Dirichlet $L$-functions due to Young (2017), zero density estimates due to Heath-Brown (1995) near the edge of the critical strip, and an asymptotic for averages of Zagier $L$-series due to Balkanova-Frolenkov-Risager (2022). Furthermore, we strengthen our exponent to $\frac{5}{8}+\varepsilon$ conditionally on the generalised Lindelöf hypothesis for quadratic Dirichlet $L$-functions, which breaks the existing barrier.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish three new and general transformations with sixteen parameters and bases via Abel's lemma on summation by parts. As applications, we set up a lot of new transformations of basic hypergeometric series. Among include some new results of Gasper and Rahman's quadratic, cubic, and quartic transformations. Furthermore, we put forward the so-called $(R,S)$-type transformation with arbitrary degree to unify such multibasic transformations. Some special $(R,S)$-type transformations are presented.

Abstract:This paper illustrates the power of the entropy method in addressing problems from large deviation theory. We provide and review entropy proofs for most fundamental results in large deviation theory, including Cramer's theorem, the Gärtner--Ellis theorem, and Sanov's theorem. Moreover, by the entropy method, we also strengthen Sanov's theorem to the strong version.

Abstract:For absolutely convergent series we state explicitly a one-sided summation estimate that can be viewed as the discrete analogue of the change of variable formula on the half line. This estimate is implicit in Pascal Lefèvre's recent elegant proof of the classical discrete Hardy inequality. Here we remove a superfluous irrationality condition therein and point out the change of variable character of his approach. This leads to a simpler, shorter and \textit{bona fide} Ingham type proof of the discrete Hardy inequality, and also provides the optimal constant.

Abstract:Assuming the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis, it is known that at least half of the central values $L(\frac{1}{2},\chi)$ are non-vanishing as $\chi$ ranges over primitive characters modulo $q$. Unconditionally, this is known on average over both $\chi$ modulo $q$ and $Q/2 \leq q \leq 2Q$. We prove that for any $\delta>0$, there exist $\eta_1,\eta_2>0$ depending on $\delta$ such that the non-vanishing proportion for $L(\frac{1}{2},\chi)$ as $\chi$ ranges modulo $q$ with $q$ varying in short intervals of size $Q^{1-\eta_1}$ around $Q$ and in arithmetic progressions with moduli up to $Q^{\eta_2}$ is larger than $\frac{1}{2}-\delta$.
