The first successful observation of efficient infrared up-conversion luminescence verifies that the PS sample is an assembly of quantum confined structures with reduced dimensionalities. A double-resonance enhanced third-order nonlinear optical process is suggested to interpret the experimental observation. The third-order nonlinear susceptibility of PS shows an anisotropic behaviour with a four fold orientation symmetry similar to that of Si single crystal. The carrier transfer mechanism involved in the light emission process is studied by the picosecond time-resolved luminescence spectroscopy. A direct evidence of the existence of confined excitions induced by the quantum size effect of PS has been revealed and the excition dynamics is studied for the first time. A comprehensive luminescence model which takes account into both the effects of quantum confinement and of surface states as well as the carrier transfer dynamics is proposed. A tight-binding calculation of the electronic properties of PS has shown that the luminescence peak positions could only appear at a series of discrete energies This "pinning" phenomenon is proved in our experimental observation Based on the theoretical estimation, the achievement of blue light emission is realistic but requires quite critical conditions.
