Abstract:Porous cross-linked polymers containing pendant triazole groups were synthesized from glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) in the presence of divinylbenzene via high internal phase emulsion (HIPE) templating method followed by functionalization with sodium 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole (ATANa). They were characterized with FTIR, SEM, BET, and mercury intrusion and assessed as CO2 adsorbents. With interconnected hierarchical porous structure and abundant triazole groups which absorbed CO2 chemically in 1:1 stoichiometry, the adsorbents exhibited high CO2 adsorption capacity (3.6 mmol g(1), at 25 degrees C and 1 atm) and rate, and good CO2/N-2 selectivity (similar to 30). The adsorbents also displayed easy CO2 desorption with medium desorption heat (58 kJ/mol CO2), acceptable moisture endurance, and excellent recyclability. The results suggest that these functionalized porous polymers are potential adsorbents for CO2 capture

Abstract:Superhydrophobic nanoporous polydivinylbenzene materials are successfully synthesized by a novel solvothermal route. The synthesized polymers exhibit high surface area, large pore volume, controllable average pore size, superhydrophobicity and superoleophilicity. In the adsorption of typical volatile organic compounds (VOC) and organic pollutants in water, it displays excellent adsorptive property compared with that of activated carbon and Amberlite XAD-4 resin. The nanoporous polydivinylbenzene almost does not adsorb either liquid or gaseous water and thus has a preferential selectivity for organic compounds. Our nanoporous material shows a great potential in air purification, wastewater treatment, chemical accident remediation and environmental protection.

Abstract:Carbon–silica materials with hierarchical pores consisting of micropores and mesopores were prepared by introducing nanocarbon microspheres derived from biomass sugar into silica gel channels in a hydrothermal environment. The physicochemical properties of the materials were characterized by nitrogen physical adsorption (BET), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and thermogravimetric (TG), and the adsorption properties of various organic waste gases were investigated. The results showed that microporous carbon materials were introduced successfully into the silica gel channels, thus showing the high adsorption capacity of activated carbon in high humidity organic waste gas, and the high stability and mechanical strength of the silica gel. The dynamic adsorption behavior confirmed that the carbon–silica material had excellent adsorption capacity for different volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Furthermore, the carbon–silica material exhibited excellent desorption characteristics: adsorbed toluene was completely desorbed at 150°C, thereby showing superior regeneration characteristics. Both features were attributed to the formation of hierarchical pores.

Abstract:A hydrophobic hypercrosslinked polymer with poly (4-tert-butylstyrene-styrene-divinylbenzene) matrix (LC-1) was prepared as adsorbent for the removal of volatile organic compounds from gas streams. The content of oxygen-containing functional groups of LC-1 was about one-fourth that of commercial hypercrosslinked polymeric adsorbent (NDA-201). The results of the water vapor adsorption experiment indicated that LC-1 had a more hydrophobic surface than NDA-201. Three chlorinated volatile organic compounds (trichloroethylene, trichloromethane, and 1, 2-dichloroethane) were used to investigate the adsorption characteristics of LC-1 under dry and humid conditions. Equilibrium adsorption data in dry streams showed that LC-1 had good adsorption abilities for three chlorinated VOCs due to its abundant micropore structure. Moreover, the presence of water vapor in the gas stream had negligible effect on breakthrough time of three chlorinated VOCs adsorption onto LC-1 when values of relative humidity were equal to or below 50%; the breakthrough time of three chlorinated VOCs decreased less than 11% even if the relative humidity was 90%. Taken together, it is expected that LC-1 would be a promising adsorbent for the removal of VOCs vapor from the humid gas streams.

Abstract:The novel hypercrosslinked polymeric adsorbents with well-developed microporous and mesoporous structures were synthesized through suspension polymerization and post-crosslinking process. Characterization of the samples was determined by N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, SEM images, and fractal dimensions. The results show that the synthesized samples can possess a high BET surface area (∼1300m2/g) with large micropore and mesopore volumes (0.28mL/g and 1.25mL/g, respectively). The adsorption/desorption behavior of n-hexane on the newly synthesized adsorbents was evaluated and compared with commercial hypercrosslinked polymeric adsorbent (NDA-150). At low relative pressure (p/p0=0.04), the newly synthesized adsorbents exhibited similar adsorption capacities to NDA-150, however, they had higher adsorption capacities than NDA-150 at high relative pressure (p/p0=0.8). Moreover, n-hexane can be desorbed more efficiently from the newly synthesized adsorbents than NDA-150. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.
Green synthesis of a superhydrophobic porous organic polymer for the removal of volatile organic compounds at high humidity

Abstract:Superhydrophobic porous organic polymers are potential sorbents for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) pollution control by suppressing the competition of water molecules on their surfaces. However, the synthesis of superhydrophobic reagents usually requires large amounts of organic solvents and a long reaction time (≥ 24 h). Herein, a green mechanochemical method was developed to synthesize a superhydrophobic polymer (MSHMP-1) with the advantages of using a small amount of organic solvents (5 mL/g) and a short reaction time (2 h). Meanwhile, MSHMP-1 with a water contact angle (WCA) of 162° exhibited a dramatically rich pore structure as revealed by its specific surface area (SSA) of 1780 m2/g. The decrease in the adsorption of benzene on MSHMP-1 due to the competition of water molecules, even at relative humidity of 90 %, was nonsignificant (<10 %), indicating the great application potential of MSHMP-1 in hydrophobic adsorption. Moreover, the adsorption capacity of MSHMP-1 was maintained after at least five adsorption-desorption cycles. Therefore, MSHMP-1 can be a remarkable adsorbent for the removal of hazardous VOCs, especially at high humidity levels.

Abstract:Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) with high toxicity and carcinogenicity are emitted from kinds of industries, which endanger human health and the environment. Adsorption is a promising method for the treatment of VOCs due to its low cost and high efficiency. In recent years, activated carbons, zeolites, and mesoporous materials are widely used to remove VOCs because of their high specific surface area and abundant porosity. However, the hydrophilic nature and low desorption rate of those materials limit their commercial application. Furthermore, the adsorption capacities of VOCs still need to be improved. Porous organic polymers (POPs) with extremely high porosity, structural diversity, and hydrophobic have been considered as one of the most promising candidates for VOCs adsorption. This review generalized the superiority of POPs for VOCs adsorption compared to other porous materials and summarized the studies of VOCs adsorption on different types of POPs. Moreover, the mechanism of competitive adsorption between water and VOCs on the POPs was discussed. Finally, a concise outlook for utilizing POPs for VOCs adsorption was discussed, noting areas in which further work is needed to develop the next-generation POPs for practical applications.
Engineering surface functional groups on mesoporous silica: towards a humidity-resistant hydrophobic adsorbent

Abstract:Practical volatile organic compound (VOC) adsorption requires the functional materials to work in humid conditions, whereas most proposed materials fail to overcome this challenge. We report a facile thermal treatment approach to create an organic functional group-enriched and hydroxyl group-limited mesoporous silica, that exhibits dramatically improved humidity resistance and toluene adsorption capacity. Fundamental adsorption behaviors of the materials were investigated both statically and dynamically to distill the functional mechanisms of the performance enhancement. In particular, the results of adsorption heat demonstrated their hydrophobicity and strong affinity to toluene, and dynamic adsorption tests illustrated a higher adsorption selectivity for toluene (with 1.39-1.84 times the hydrophobicity values of Q(wet)/Q(dry) (76.4-71.5%) compared with pristine silica) and reusability, which were both attributed to the durable and stable surface hydrophobicity.

Abstract:In many sources of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), large amounts of water vapor come from the air and the reactors. The relative humidity (RH) of exhaust gas is normally >60% and is supersaturated. Maintaining the property of adsorbent on VOCs in a highly humid gas stream is a serious industrial problem. In this study, the adsorption/desorption behavior of toluene in a micro-mesoporous polymeric resin was investigated in a highly humid environment to explore the influence of abound water vapor on resin adsorption and regeneration. This resin could selectively adsorb toluene at an RH of 80%, and its adsorption property was unaffected by the presence of water vapor. In the case of humidity saturation, the resin displayed a high adsorption capacity at a moisture content of <30%. Therefore, the polymer resin is an excellent water-resistant adsorbent of VOCs. In the regenerative experiment, the resin maintained its original adsorption capability after four adsorption/desorption cycles of toluene purging with nitrogen gas at 120 degrees C. Abstract:Activated carbon fibers (ACFs) are a popular class of adsorbents for volatile organic compounds (VOCs), however, their abundant hydrophilic functional groups greatly limit their selective adsorption capacity for organics under humid conditions. In this work, porous graphitized carbon fibers (PGCFs) with enhanced hydrophobicity were prepared by KOH-promoted catalytic graphitization of viscose-based ACF, and their adsorption capacity for representative VOCs was investigated. Characterizations showed that the PGCFs had reduced O/C ratios, high specific surface areas exceeding 2200 m2/g, and micro-mesoporous structure. Under dry conditions, the adsorption capacity of a typical PGCF for toluene, cyclohexane and ethanol reached 7.2, 4.6 and 2.0 mmol/g, respectively. At 80 % relative humidity, the adsorption capacity for toluene and cyclohexane retained 92 % and 85 %, respectively, while that for ethanol even increased by 54 %. The abundant π electrons and high polarizability of the PGCF strengthened the π-π interaction and dispersion force with non-polar organics, thereby enhancing their removal. The capillary condensed water in mesopores could act as absorbate for the uptake of polar ethanol under humid conditions. The toluene-adsorbed PGCF was effectively regenerated at a low temperature of 80 °C. Benefiting from their excellent adsorption capacity and moisture-resistance, PGCFs may be promising adsorbents to remove VOCs from air.

Abstract:<p>Adsorption technology has been widely developed and employed for water and air pollution control. Conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) emerge as the appropriate adsorbents candidate. To fulfill high capacity and good selectivity for the adsorption, strategies of flexible micropores design and functional group modification that facilitate the physical and chemical effect are considered desirable. The review firstly summarizes the advancements in structural studies of CMPs and the applications for contaminants adsorption from water and air. Further, the mechanisms involved in the remarkable capacity and selectivity of CMPs adsorbents are addressed. Finally, upcoming research efforts on materials design, adsorption principle, and resource recovery to overcome current practical bottlenecks are proposed.</p>

Novel Hydrophobic Pdvb/R-Sio2 for Adsorption of Volatile Organic Compounds from Highly Humid Gas Stream

Abstract:A novel organic-inorganic hydrophobic polydivinylbenzene-silica adsorbent (PDVB/R-SiO2) was successfully prepared by introducing a specific amount of divinylbenzene and solvent (i.e., tetrahydrofuran) to SiO2 pores and initiating polymerization under solvothermal conditions. New smaller structures and surface areas were formed in the SiO2 pores. The PDVB/R-SiO2-0.5 samples exhibited a bimodal pore size distribution with both SiO2 micropores/mesopores (0.5-2.0 am) and mesopores (2.0-5.0 nm). The surface areas increased from 116 m(2)/g (SiO2) to 246 m(2)/g. The breakthrough curves of toluene adsorption indicated that the amount adsorbed on PDVB/R-SiO2-0.5 was 12 times higher than that on SiO2. The highly humid environment exhibited no effect on adsorption because the surface of PDVB was functionalized. The adsorbed toluene was easily desorbed in hot N-2 stream at 100 degrees C. After 10 adsorption-desorption cycles, PDVB/R-SiO2-0.5 continued exhibiting excellent adsorption, indicating superior structural and regeneration abilities. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. Preparation and Adsorption Application Study of Fluorine-containing Conjugated Microporous Polymers

Abstract:Water pollution arising from ever-growing domestic sewage and industrial organic pollutants has caused severe environmental and ecological problems in many parts of the world. It is urgent to seek appropriate ways to resolve oily wastewater and organic solvent pollution. Currently, physical adsorption is considered to be one of the most important methods to eliminate the oil contaminations in water thanks to its high efficiency and low cost. However, traditional adsorbent materials, such as activated carbon, zeolite and natural fibers, often suffer from low adsorption capacities, poor adsorption selectivity and recyclability. Thus, it is still of great importance to develop new absorbent materials for the separation and removal of oils or organic pollutants from water to address environmental issues. Conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) are a class of organic porous polymers that have attracted extensive attention thanks to their large specific surface area, good physicochemical stability and unique extended p-conjugation along the polymer skeleton. Here we report a fluorine-containing conjugated microporous polymer (F-CMP), which was synthesized via Sonogashira cross-coupling reaction from 1,3,5-trifluoro-2,4,6-triiodobenzene and 1,3,5-triethynylbenzene. As a comparison, fluorine-free conjugated microporous polymer (H-CMP) was synthesized in the same condition from 1,3,5-tribromobenzene and 1,3,5-triethynybenzene. By introducing fluorine atom into the conjugated microporous skeleton, the contact angle of F-CMP with water reaches 145 degrees, exhibiting excellent hydrophobicity. Nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms of the F-CMP show a high specific surface area of 638 m(2)center dot g(-1), and the pore size distribution analysis shows the existence of both micropores and macropores. It can be obtained by adsorption experiments of oil and organic solvents that the adsorption capability of F-CMP increases significantly compared with its fluorine-free counterpart with similar structural skeleton. Due to high hydrophobicity and porous properties, F-CMP shows excellent adsorption properties towards to the removal of organic solvents and oils. The adsorption capability of F-CMP towards pump oil and chloroform can reach 40 g/g and 43 g/g, respectively. Meanwhile, F-CMP shows rapid adsorption rate and excellent adsorption recyclability. Thus, F-CMP displays promising application prospects in the field of organic pollutant adsorption and environmental remediation.
Adsorption of Multicomponent VOCs on Various Biomass-Derived Hierarchical Porous Carbon: A Study on Adsorption Mechanism and Competitive Effect.

Abstract:Biomass-derived porous carbon materials are potential adsorbents for VOCs. In this work, biomass-derived nitrogen-doped hierarchical porous carbons (NHPCs) were synthesized by a one-step pyrolysis activation combined with nitrogen doping method from several biomass wastes (corn straw, wheat stalk, bamboo, pine, and corncob). NHPCs have a hierarchical porous structure with micro-meso-macropores distribution, nitrogen doping, large specific surface area, and pore volume. The corncob derived carbon (NHPC-CC) has the best activation result as analyses showed that a lower ash content and higher total cellulose composition content of the biomass result in a better pore activation effect. Single and multi-component dynamic adsorption tests of typical VOCs (benzene, toluene, and chlorobenzene) were conducted on NHPCs in laboratory conditions (∼500 ppm). Promising VOC adsorption capacity and great adsorption kinetics with low mass transfer resistance were found on NHPCs. Correlation analysis showed that the high VOC adsorption capacity and great adsorption kinetics can be attributed to the large surface area of micro-mesopores and the mass transfer channels provided by meso-macropores respectively. The competitive dynamic adsorption tests revealed that the VOC with lower saturated vapor pressure has more adsorption sites on the surface of micro-mesopores and stronger adsorption force, which results in the higher adsorption capacity and desorption caused by substitution reaction in VOCs competitive adsorption process. In detail, the process of toluene and chlorobenzene competitive adsorption was described. Besides, well recyclability of NHPC-CC was revealed as the VOCs adsorption capacity reductions were less than 10% after four adsorption-desorption cycles. All studies showed that the NHPC-CC could be potential adsorbent for VOCs in industrial process.

Abstract:To enhance adsorption and desorption efficiency of volatile organic compounds from gas streams, we synthesized a series of well-developed micro-mesoporous hypercrosslinked polymeric adsorbents (MM-1, MM-2, and MM-3). The adsorption and desorption performance of dichloromethane and 2-butanone on newly synthesized adsorbents was investigated and compared with commercial micropore-dominated hypercrosslinked polymeric adsorbent (JT-001). The contributions of micropore and mesopore to adsorption and desorption of dichloromethane and 2-butanone on polymeric adsorbents were well elucidated. Consequently, the adsorbent MM-3 had been sorted out with high BET surface area (1606 m(2)/g), large micropore and mesopore volumes (0.562 mL/g and 1.046 mL/g, respectively). The MM-3 exhibited the similar adsorption capacities with JT-001 for dichloromethane and 2-butanone at regions of p/p0<0.2, but had higher adsorption capacities than JT-001 at high relative pressures. The largest adsorption capacities of MM-3 for dichloromethane and 2-butanone at 308 K were 1345.3 mg/g and 853.5 mg/g, respectively, which are about 1.78 and 1.88 times those of JT-001 under the same condition. Furthermore, the MM-3 exhibited higher desorption efficiencies than JT-001, especially for 2-butanone with a higher boiling point.

Abstract:Water vapor and SO 2 significantly diminish the adsorption performance of activated carbon (AC) for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in exhaust gases. In this paper, a hydrophobic and hollow hierarchical porous activated carbon (HHRCs) was synthesized. The HHRC-8 possessed an ultra-high specific surface area (3373.5 m 2 /g), high mesopore proportion (47.33 %), and low O content (5.19 %). Under dry conditions, HHRC-8 exhibited excellent dynamic and static adsorption capacities both for weak-polar toluene and strong-polar 1,2-dichloroethane, superior to many reported MOFs and carbon materials. Additionally, the static adsorption capacity of water vapor on HHRC-8 was 6.1 mmol/g at 70 RH%, presenting a higher hydrophobicity index. During the competitive adsorption between toluene and 1,2-dichloroethane, HHRC-8, with a substitution peak phenomenon of 1,2-dichloroethane, displayed a higher total adsorption capacity and a longer breakthrough time in complex waste gases. Single water vapor (70 RH%) or SO 2 (200 mg/m 3 ) had a negative impact on VOCs adsorption, among which, water vapor showed a greater influence on the adsorption capacity, while SO 2 showed a greater effect on breakthrough time. When water vapor and SO 2 coexisted, the negative impact superimposed, showing a greater effect on 1,2-dichloroethane. Density functional theory calculations revealed that surface functional groups could interact with water, SO 2 , 1,2-dichloroethane and toluene molecules. In addition, water vapor and SO 2 could mutually promote adsorption through hydrogen bonds. HHRC-8, with hydrophobicity and hierarchical adsorption properties, exhibiting a superior competitive adsorption capacity and an excellent reusability, is a promising adsorbent for the multi-component VOCs removal in complex waste gas.

Abstract:Freshwater shortage is becoming one of the most critical global challenges owing to severe water pollution caused by micropollutants and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). However, current purification technology shows slow adsorption of micropollutants and requires an energy‐intensive process for VOCs removal from water. In this study, a highly efficient molecularly engineered covalent triazine framework (CTF) for rapid adsorption of micropollutants and VOC‐intercepting performance using solar distillation is reported. Supramolecular design and mild oxidation of CTFs (CTF‐OXs) enable hydrophilic internal channels and improve molecular sieving of micropollutants. CTF‐OX shows rapid removal efficiency of micropollutants (>99.9% in 10 s) and can be regenerated several times without performance loss. Uptake rates of selected micropollutants are high, with initial pollutant uptake rates of 21.9 g mg−1 min−1, which are the highest rates recorded for bisphenol A (BPA) adsorption. Additionally, photothermal composite membrane fabrication using CTF‐OX exhibits high VOC rejection rate (up to 98%) under 1 sun irradiation (1 kW m−2). A prototype of synergistic purification system composed of adsorption and solar‐driven membrane can efficiently remove over 99.9% of mixed phenol derivatives. This study provides an effective strategy for rapid removal of micropollutants and high VOC rejection via solar‐driven evaporation process.

Abstract:A hydrophobic hypercrosslinked polymeric resin LC-1 was prepared and characterized. The properties of LC-1 resin were compared with those of a commercial hypercrosslinked polymer NDA-201 resin. In addition, the dynamic adsorption of trichloroethylene (TCE) onto LC-1 under dry and humid conditions at 303K was investigated, the result shows that LC-1 possesses high hydrophobic property and can remove TCE from gas stream without effect of high humidity efficiently.
