Abstract:A facile in situ synthetic method is developed to synthesize metal sulfide nanoparticles based on 2D M-TCPP (M = Cu, Cd, or Co, TCPP = tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin)) metal-organic framework nanosheets. The obtained CuS/Cu-TCPP composite nanosheet is used as the active material in photoelectrochemical cells, showing notably increased photocurrent due to the improved exciton separation and charge carrier transport.

Abstract:Stable Bi2S3 quantum dots (QDs) prepared by a modified successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) method were used to decorate TiO2 nanorod (TNR) arrays and enhance their photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance. In the above procedure, elemental sulfur vapor was utilized as a precursor instead of aqueous Na2S to prevent the photodecomposition of QDs, whereas the hydrolysis of the Bi precursor (Bi(NO3)(3)) was prevented by using 3-mercaptopropionic acid as a stabilizer, and interfacial charge recombination was inhibited by depositing ZnSe passivation layers. The prepared photoelectrodes were subjected to morphological, structural, compositional, and optical/PEC property analyses, and the ideal bandgap and high absorption coefficient of Bi2S3 QDs was shown to result in enhanced visible light absorption properties and PEC performance of QD-sensitized TNR thin films, as compared to those of bare TNR films. The deposition of ZnSe on sensitized films resulted in further PEC performance enhancement, achieving a photocurrent density of 0.11 mA/cm(2) and an electron lifetime of 37.9 ms, which was attributed to the effective suppression of charge carrier recombination by ZnSe passivation layers. Thus, the facile synthesis and environmentally friendly nature of Bi2S3 QD-sensitized TNR films coated with ZnSe passivation layers make them promising components of solar energy-driven devices.

Abstract:Quaternary CuInSSe nanocrystals have been synthesized by a colloidal route using commercially available materials. Oleylamine is used as the solvent and capping agent. It is proved that the nanocrystals are alloyed nanocrystals rather than a mixture of CuInS2 and CuInSe2 nanocystals. Furthermore, their formation is regarded to involve the nucleation of CuS and the subsequent reaction between CuS nuclei and remaining precursors. It is also found that the composition and structure of the nanocrystals can be influenced significantly by the reaction temperatures and time. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In this study, large-scale synthesis of Cu3SbSe4 and Cu3Sb0.98Sn0.02Se4 nanoparticles with a narrow size distribution was achieved through a rapid-injection route. These nanoparticles showed a monodisperse and quasi-spherical morphology. The Cu3SbSe4 and Cu3Sb0.98Sn0.02Se4 nanoparticle-based bulk materials were then prepared by hot-pressed sinter of the nanoparticles, and their thermoelectric performances were systematically studied. Due to the reduced lattice thermal conductivity from enhanced phonon scattering at the grain interfaces of the bulk materials, the maximum ZT value of the Cu3Sb0.98Sn0.02Se4 bulk materials reached 0.50 at 575 K.

Abstract:ZnS nanoparticles and one-dimensional nanocrystals were obtained by in-situ synthesis in Aa-AMPS-hT ternary periodic copolymer by ion complexometry and self-assembly method. The micro-morphology, structure and optical properties were characterized by TEM, SED, UV-vis spectra and PL spectra. The results show that the products are hexagonal ZnS nanocrystals with 15 nm-215 nm in diameter. The morphology and dimension of ZnS nanoparticles could be controlled by varying the sulfaration time. The UV-vis absorption spectra indicate that the absorption edges are blue-shifted by shortening the sulfuration time, exhibiting a marked quantum size effect. With shortening sulfuration time, the photoluminescence emission peak of 409.8 nm is blue-shifted, which could be ascribed to be the forbidden gap emission.

Abstract:Luminescent CuInS2 nanocrystals have been synthesized in dodecanethiol using air-stable precursors. The nanocrystals were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. The optical properties of the CuInS2 nanocrystals can be controlled by changing the reaction conditions, such as reaction time, temperature, and addition of ligands. It was found that the steady-state photoluminescence spectrum of the close-packed CuInS2 nanocrystals on glass substrate peaked at longer wavelength than that of the colloidal ones and the close-packed nanocrystals possessed a shorter luminescence decay time. This behavior was explained on the basis of Förster resonant energy transfer due to the shorter distance between nanocrystals on substrate.

Abstract:Copper indium sulfide (CuInS2) is a ternary A(I)B(III)X(VI)2-type semiconductor featuring a direct bandgap with a high absorption coefficient. In attempts to explore their practical applications, nanoscale CuInS2 has been synthesized with crystal sizes down to the quantum confinement regime. The merits of CuInS2 nanocrystals (NCs) include wide emission tunability, a large Stokes shift, long decay time, and eco-friendliness, making them promising candidates in photoelectronics and photovoltaics. Over the past two decades, advances in wet-chemistry synthesis have achieved rational control over cation-anion reactivity during the preparation of colloidal CuInS2 NCs and post-synthesis cation exchange. The precise nano-synthesis coupled with a series of hybridization strategies has given birth to a library of CuInS2 NCs with highly customizable photophysical properties. This review article focuses on the recent development of CuInS2 NCs enabled by advanced synthetic and hybridization techniques. We show that the state-of-the-art CuInS2 NCs play significant roles in optoelectronic and biomedical applications.

Abstract:CuZnSe2 (CZSe) is an important ternary semiconductor comprised of earth-abundant elements with a suitable bandgap for visible light absorption and structural/stoichiometric versatility that make it a promising candidate for photovoltaic applications. Here we report the controlled synthesis of the compound copper chalcogenide in nanocrystal form using a colloidal hot injection approach. Furthermore, we demonstrate control over the crystal phase to occur as either wurtzite (WZ) or zinc blende (ZB) as a function of the presence and absence of phosphine-based ligands. A major emission peak was observed at similar to 1.7 eV using low-temperature photoluminescence (PL), ranging from 30 to 200 K. Additionally, we demonstrate the ability to extend this synthetic protocol to form a polytype structure comprised of ZB core with a WZ shell.

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate the synthesis of sulfide and selenide nanocrystals in a water-ethanol mixed solution system. This synthetic way was based on the direct reactions between metal ions and S2-/Se. Linoleic acid was adopted to protect the nanocrystals from agglomeration. Without involving extreme experimental conditions, this less toxic synthetic route can be expected to bring more opportunities to nanocrystal-related research and application fields.

Abstract:Ternary-/hetero-nanocrystals: a facile one-pot colloidal route for controlled synthesis of ternary AgFeS2 nanocrystals, which have a band gap of 1.21 eV, is presented for the first time. Such ternary AgFeS2 nanocrystals can transform to Ag2 S-Fe7 S8 heterodimers by internal thermal reaction at elevated temperature, providing a new route to synthesize semiconductor hetero-nanostructures.

Abstract:Single crystalline copper selenide (Cu2-xSe) nanocrystals (NCs) with well-defined octahedral morphology are successfully synthesized by a colloidal hot-solution injection method from the reaction of anhydrous CuCl with Ph2Se2 under argon flow, in which 1-octadecene (ODE) and oleylamine (OAm) are used as solvent and surfactant, respectively. The Cu2-xSe octahedral nanostructures are characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, HRTEM, SAED, EDS, FT-IR and XPS and it is found that they are in the cubic phase with high quality. The growth process of the nanostructures is investigated and it is noted that reaction temperature, reaction time and capping surfactant OAm play significant roles in controlling the morphologies of the final products. Meanwhile, the current-voltage (I-V) behavior of the as-prepared octahedral Cu2-xSe nanostructures is explored for the first time and it is found that the Cu2-xSe octahedral nanostructures are promising candidates for application in photodetection and related areas.

Abstract:Heterocrystalline polytype nanostructured semiconductors have been attracting more and more attention in recent years due to their novel structures and special interfaces. Up to now, controlled polytypic nanostructures are mostly realized in II-VI and III-V semiconductors. Herein, we report the synthesis and photoelectrochemical properties of Cu-based ternary I-III-VI2 chalcogenide polytypic nanocrystals, with a focus on polytypic CuInS2 (CIS), CuInSe2 (CISe), and CuIn(S0.5Se0.5)2 alloy nanocrystals. Each obtained polytypic nanocrystal is constructed with a wurtzite hexagonal column and a zinc blende/chalcopyrite cusp, regardless of the S/Se ratio. The growth mechanisms of polytypic CIS and CISe nanocrystals have been studied by time-dependent experiments. The polytypic nanocrystals are solution-deposited on indium-tin oxide glass substrate and used as a photoelectrode, thus showing stable photoelectrochemical activity in aqueous solution. Density functional theory calculation was used to study the electronic structure and the band gap alignment. This versatile synthetic method provides a new route for synthesis of novel polytypic nanostructured semiconductors with unique properties.

Abstract:CuInS2 nanocrystals were synthesized by one-pot thermolysis of a mixture solution of metal chlorides, 1-dodecanethiol (DT) and oleic acid in noncoordinating solvent 1-octadecene. Interestingly, in this synthesis, different structures and shapes were obtained by simply varying the dosage of DT. At a low dosage of DT, wurtzite nanoplates formed in the initial reaction stage and then they further grew to nanoplates with wurtzite-zincblende polytypism as the reaction proceeded. On the contrary, a high dosage of DT produced zincblende nanoparticles. The formation processes of nanoplates and nanoparticles were studied and a growth mechanism was proposed. Our research will aid in solution-synthesis of ternary chalcogenide nanocrystals and the development of their optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Monodisperse CuFeSe2 nanocrystals of high quality have been successfully synthesized for the first time using a hot-solution injection method from the reaction of metallic acetylacetonates with diphenyl diselenide (Ph2Se2) in oleylamine with addition of oleic acid at 255 °C for 90 min. The characterizations of X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, and compositional analysis reveal that the resulting CuFeSe2 nanocrystals are of tetragonal phase with a stoichiometric composition. The CuFeSe2 nanocrystals exhibit well-defined quasi-cubic shape with an average size of ∼18 nm, and their shape can be tuned from quasi-cubes to quasi-spheres by adjusting the reaction parameters. Magnetic measurement reveals that the as-synthesized CuFeSe2 nanocrystals are ferromagnetic and paramagnetic at 4 and 300 K, respectively. Additionally, the current-voltage (I-V) behavior of the CuFeSe2 nanocrystals suggests that they are promising candidates for application in optoelectronics and solar energy conversion.

Abstract:The preparation of nanocrystalline Cu2SnS3 at synthetic conditions of low temperature (<180°C) was first reported. Nanocrystalline Cu2SnS3 was directly synthesized from the reaction of CuCl2·2H2O with elemental tin and sulfur through a solvothermal process in ethylenediamine at 140–180°C for 15 h. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns, transmission electron microscope (TEM) images, and X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) were used to characterize the products. The mechanism of the formation of the Cu2SnS3 nanocrystals in the solvothermal process was proposed. The UV–vis absorption spectroscopy and the electric conductivity of products were also studied.

Abstract:Most of reported I-III-VI2 type chalcopyrites have been developed as indispensible materials for potential application in photovoltaic solar cells, magnetism or thermoeletrics. The exploration of its photoluminescence potentials has been very limited and the chemical sensing using fluorescence to signal a recognition event is realized by way of CuFeSe2 nanocrystals. A novel solution-based synthesis strategy has been developed for the preparation of CuFeSe2 quantum dots (QDs) via oleylamine and dodecanethiol as precursors. QDs possess an intense blue luminescence at 431 nm and excitation-dependent features are recorded. The nanocrystals exhibit transformation from ferromagnetism to paramagnetism state between 4 K and 298 K. Another distinct advantage of the quantum dots will be the signaling pathway in response to external analytes. It gives rise to a rapid and selective assay of Cr2O72- through an "on-off" switching process. A linear equation can be obtained in the range from 0 to 47.5 mu M and the detection limit has been determined to be 0.46 mu M. This cost-effective method will pave the way for the efficient synthesis of ternary chalcopyrites and provide suitable chemical routes for sensing purposes.
