Abstract:A novel glass additive of 10Bi(2)O(3)-5Li(2)O-7.5Na(2)O-7.5K(2)O-21Nb(2)O(5)-20.5SiO(2)-10.5BaO-11SrO-4.5Al(2)O(3)-0.5La(2)O(3)-2TiO(2) was melted to improve the energy-storage properties of (Ba0.94Li0.02La0.04)(Mg0.04Ti0.96)O-3 (BLLMT) ceramics (BLLMT-x wt% G), which overcomes the paradox between polarization and voltage endurance. The dielectric constant and resistance of BLLMT ceramics are improved by glass modification, while the grain size decreases. Consequently, excellent breakdown strength of 565.9 kV/cm is obtained, and the difference between maximum polarization and remnant polarization reaches up to 22.14 mu C/cm(2). Weibull distribution and finite element simulation prove that grain boundary density, grain size, resistance, and bandgap width have significant effects on the breakdown strength. Finally, outstanding energy-storage density of 4.82 J/cm(3) is obtained at x = 2, accompanied with an excellent pulse discharged energy density of 3.42 J/cm(3), current density of 1226.12 A/cm(2), and power density of 337.19 MW/cm(3). Excellent temperature stability is gained with the variation of the pulse discharged energy density less than 10% at 20 degrees C-140 degrees C. The outstanding pulse energy-storage parameters are related to phase structure, small grain size, high grain boundary density, formation of liquid phase, increased ceramic resistance, and destroyed long-range ordered ferroelectrics. This work provides a novel idea for fabricating glass to obtain excellent energy-storage performance and promotes practical application of BaTiO3 ceramics.

Abstract:Perovskite (1-x)Ba0.9Sr0.1TiO3-xBi(Mg1/2Ti1/2)O-3 (BST-BiMT-x) ceramics were prepared by sintering the corresponding powders synthesized by combining of solid state reaction method with citrate sol-gel and self-combustion techniques. Submicron grains morphology, high density and large resistivity were obtained in the BST-BiMT-x ceramics. In addition, the BST-BiMT-0.1 and BST-BiMT-0.075 ceramics exhibit ferroelectric hysteresis loops with slim shape which lead to enhanced energy-storage properties. The energy-storage density of these two ceramics increases almost linearly with increasing the applied electric filed. The energy-storage density and efficiency at 25 kV/cm of the BST-BiMT-0.1 and BST-BiMT-0.075 ceramics sintered at 1200 degrees C are 141.2 mJ/cm(3 )and 79.3%, and 158.1 mJ/cm(3) and 76.7%, respectively, surpassing many recently reported values for ferroelectric/antiferroelectric ceramics. The enhanced energy-storage density and efficiency under low electric field can be attributed to the slim polarization-electric field hysteresis loops, high density accompanied by submicron grains morphology and pure perovskite structure.
Defect Dipoles Induced High‐energy Storage Density in Mn‐doped BST Ceramics Prepared by Spark Plasma Sintering

Abstract:Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3 ceramics with different Mn-doping amount (Ba0.5Sr0.5Ti1-xMnxO3, x = 0, 0.1%, 0.3%, 0.5%) were prepared by spark plasma sintering method. The single phase with cubic structure symmetry was confirmed and a gradual increase in lattice parameter with increasing x was observed. Fine grains with dense microstructure were revealed from the SEM images, while an obvious increase in grain size was detected when x = 0.5%. An optimized doping amount of 0.3% was determined, showing high dielectric constant (epsilon(r) approximate to 2190), low dielectric loss (tan approximate to 2.78 x 10(-3)), enhanced breakdown strength (290 kV/cm), and high-energy storage density (1.69 J/cm(3)) at room temperature. A possible mechanism, namely defect dipoles formation mechanism, was employed to explain the optimization of energy storage performance, and further confirmed from the variation in AC conductivity.

Abstract:The oxalate co-precipitation method was employed to synthesize nanocrystalline Ba0.4Sr0.6TiO3 having an average particle size of 100 nm. The conventional sintering (CS) and spark plasma sintering (SPS) methods were used to fabricate Ba0.4Sr0.6TiO3 ceramics with different microstructures. The SPS sample presented uniformly dense microstructure and ultrafine grains, while abnormal grain growth and some pores were discerned in the CS sample. The differences in microstructure significantly affected the dielectric properties and energy storage performance of the ceramics. The dielectric constant of the SPS sample was high (epsilon' (similar to)1200), its dielectric loss was low (tan delta (similar to)0.003), and the sample presented diffuse phase transition and high breakdown strength (E-b = 260 kV/cm) at room temperature. Compared with the CS sample, the maximum energy storage density and energy storage efficiency of the SPS sample were increased from 0.61 to 1.20 J/cm(3) and 72.6% to 91.6%, respectively. All results revealed that SPS is a powerful technique to produce dense ceramics with high energy storage performance.
Improving Energy Storage Performance of Barium Titanate-Based Ceramics by Doping MnO2

Abstract:MnO2 was used as a sintering additive to reduce sintering temperature of the 0.92(Ba0.94Li0.02La0.04) (Mg0.04Ti0.96)O3-0.08Bi(Zn1/2Ti1/2)O3 (0.92BLLMT-0.08BZT) ceramic thick film and promote sintering process. At the same time, MnO2 doping is beneficial for reducing dielectric loss and leakage current, and improving insulation performance, thus, breakdown field strength (BDS) of ceramics is increased. In addition, MnO2 doping introduces defect energy levels, and increases lattice distortion and polarization intensity, thereby changing the crystal structure and microstructure morphology, and improving energy storage density and thermal stability. The BDS reaches 650 kV/cm electric field with 0.5 mol% MnO2 doping, where the ceramic thick film achieves a discharge density (Wdis) of 5.51 J/cm3, ultra-high power density (PD = 443.87 MW/cm3) and current density (CD = 1365.74 A/cm2). The ceramic thick film exhibits good thermal stability with Wdis change rate of only 16.47 % within room temperature to 170 degrees C under 200 kV/cm. Such excellent comprehensive performance can be attributed to the decrease of grain size, defect concentration, and leakage current, and the formation of polar nano regions in the BT-based ceramics caused by MnO2 doping and cations substitution at A-site and B-site of the perovskite structure. This study provides valuable insights for the research of lead-free dielectric ceramic capacitors, and the 0.92BLLMT-0.08BZT-0.5 mol% Mn ceramic thick film presents good development prospect in high-power pulse energy storage system.

Abstract:Barium zirconate titanate (BaTi 0.7 Zr 0.3 O 3 ) ceramics were prepared via spark plasma sintering (SPS) and conventional solid-state sintering (CS). Both samples exhibited single phase nature as confirmed from the X-ray diffraction analysis. Compared with CS sample, more homogeneous microstructure with smaller grain size was observed in the SPS sample, which greatly improved the dielectric strength of BaTi 0.7 Zr 0.3 O 3 ceramics from 40 (CS) to 170 kV/cm (SPS). Although the polarization of SPS sample was lower than that of CS sample under the same applied electric field, the maximum energy storage density was improved to 0.51 J/cm 3 , which was about 4.5 times higher than that of the CS sample (0.12 J/cm 3 ). Moreover, finite element simulation on the local dielectric field distribution was carried out, and the effects of microstructure on the dielectric strength were further confirmed.

Abstract:(1-x)(0.72Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3-0.28SrTiO3)-xBiAlO3 (BNT-ST-xBA) lead-free ceramics were prepared through solid-state sintering methods. The structural, dielectric and energy storage properties of the ceramics were studied in this work. A large energy storage density of BNT-ST-0.01BA ceramics exceeding 1.746 J/cm3 has been obtained. The ceramics exhibit a good thermal stability at the temperature ranging from 20 °C to 120 °C. In addition, energy storage properties are relatively stable after completing 10000 electrical cycles, which shows promising potential for energy storage devices at a high temperature region.

Abstract:A novel 0-3 type (Bi0.32Sr0.42Na0.20)TiO3/MgO composite is investigated in this work, which possesses a high stored energy storage density w(s)(similar to)2.50 J/cm(3), recoverable energy storage density W(R)(similar to)2.09 J/cm(3) with high efficiency eta(similar to)84% under low electric field (20 kV/mm). The excellent performance is owning to the increase of breakdown strength (BDS) value and the intrinsic mechanism for enhanced BDS value by MgO incorporation is disclosed by numerical simulations (COMSOL). Moreover, the studied composite exhibits excellent charge-discharge performance, the current density (C-D) and power density (P-D) are 1671 A/cm(2) and 150 MW/cm(3), respectively, which are much superior to that of other ceramics. Besides, most of the stored energy is discharged within (similar to)0.15 mu s via charge-discharge tests. This work not only provides a novel technique to designing bismuth based ceramic capacitors with simultaneously high W-d,W- eta and excellent charge-discharge performance, but also deepens the understandings of the role for the metallic oxide in the composite.
Structure analyses and ferroelectric behaviour of barium titanate-doped glass–ceramic nanocrystals for energy storage applications

Abstract:New glass–ceramic (GC) nanocrystals of x BaTiO 3 –(80– x )V 2 O 5 –20PbO glasses (where x = 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 mol%) were synthesized via heat treatment at crystallization peak temperature ( Tp ) according to DSC thermograms. XRD together with dielectric measurements and E-P hysteresis loop were used to evaluate the microstructural and ferroelectric characteristics. Combining these methods made it feasible to improve the conditions for the production of the obtained nanomaterial and to identify correspondences among its nanostructure and ferroelectric features. The ability of appropriate heat treatment to transform glasses into nanocrystalline materials with crystallites smaller than 60 nm embedded in the glassy matrix was demonstrated by XRD measurements. The present glasses' fulfilled dielectric constant values do not show any ferroelectric behavior. Nevertheless, by thermal treatment of the glass system at T p , GC nanocrystals exhibited an average broad peak of around 330 K in the dielectric constant. The Curie temperature of BaTiO 3 with particle size smaller than 100 nm is extremely close to the average Curie temperature of 338 K measured in the current glass system. By properly adjusting teat-treatment time and BaTiO 3 content, this finding of these samples can be employed to manage BaTiO 3 crystal size and, consequently, transition temperature. As a result, the glass–ceramic samples segregated with nanocrystalline BaTiO 3 are supported by this result's dipolar direction and phase transition. A GC nanocrystal has an intentional energy storage density of 104 mJ cm −3 . These findings indicate that the current glass–ceramic nanocrystals are a promising material for creating energy storage devices.

Abstract:Because of high voltage resistance and high-power density, traditional ceramic dielectrics have found extensive use in electronic and pulsed power systems. Nevertheless, their subpar energy storage capabilities pose a challenge in meeting the demands of integrated and lightweight power electronic devices. This paper employs compositional design to incorporate a Bi(Zn0.5Hf0.5)O3 (BZH) relaxation component, aiming to enhance the electrical breakdown strength or effective dielectric constant, ultimately increasing the energy storage density. The 0.90(Ba0.8Sr0.2)TiO3-0.10Bi(Zn1/2Hf1/2)O3 ceramics processed by the conventional solid-phase reaction method demonstrate a significant recoverable energy density of 4.20 J/cm3, a exceptional energy storage efficiency of 95.5%, with 450 kV/cm high breakdown strength and impressive charge/discharge performance. This investigation presents a novel framework for enhancing energy storage performance in other material systems.

Abstract:Dielectric (Ba0.4Sr0.6)TiO3 (BST) ceramics are promising dielectric energy storage materials due to their moderate dielectric constant, low dielectric loss, and slight nonlinearity. However, their energy density is limited by their low breakdown strength (BDS). In this study, we aimed to address this limitation by incorporating various amounts of Bi0.2Sr0.7(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 (SBMN) into the BST matrix. The (1–x)BSTxSBMN ceramics were prepared by conventional solid-state sintering, resulting in single-phase solid solutions. Compared to pure BST ceramics, the (1–x)BST–xSBMN ceramics exhibited lower remnant polarization and significantly enhanced BDS. Furthermore, the relaxation of the ceramics enhanced with increasing doping concentration, with an efficiency of η = 94.0% achieved at x = 0.20. Among them, the breakdown field strength of 0.85BST–0.15SBMN ceramics was 597 kV cm−1, achieving a recoverable energy storage density of Wrec = 2.81 J cm−3 and an efficiency of η = 90.8% under an external electric field of 480 kV cm−1. Subsequent tests revealed that the introduction of SBMN not only increased the band gap and conduction activation energy of the material, leading to an increase in BDS, but also promoted the formation of polar nanoregions (PNRs) which contributed to boosted energy efficiency, resulting in a significant enhancement in the energy storage performance of BST ceramics.

Abstract:Barium strontium titanate (Ba0.3Sr0.7TiO3, BST) ceramics have been prepared by conventional sintering (CS) and spark plasma sintering (SPS). The effects of phase constitution and microstructure on dielectric properties, electrical breakdown process and energy storage properties of the BST ceramics were investigated. The X-ray diffraction analysis and dielectric properties measurements showed that the cubic and tetragonal phase coexisted in the SPS sample while the CS sample contained only tetragonal phase. Much smaller grain size, lower porosity, fewer defects and dislocation were observed in SPS samples, which greatly improved the electrical breakdown strength of the Ba0.3Sr0.7TiO3 ceramics. The enhanced breakdown strength of the SPS samples resulted in an improved maximum electrical energy storage density of 1.13J/cm3 which was twice as large as that of the CS sample (0.57J/cm3). Meanwhile, the energy storage efficiency was improved from 69.3% to 86.8% by using spark plasma sintering.

Abstract:A sol–gel method is employed for preparing high quality lead-free glass-ceramic samples (1 − x )BCZT- x BBS—incorporating Ba 0.85 Ca 0.15 Zr 0.1 Ti 0.9 O 3 (BCZT) powder and Bi 2 O 3 -B 2 O 3 -SiO 2 (BBS) glass-doped additives with different values of x ( x = 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15). Systematic investigations are performed to comprehend the structural, dielectric and energy storage characteristics using X-ray diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, impedance and ferroelectric analyser methods. With appropriate BBS doping ( x ), many fundamental traits including breakdown strength, dielectric loss and energy storage density have shown significant improvements. Low doping-level samples x < 0.1 have retained the pure perovskite phase while a second glass phase appeared in samples with x ≥ 0.1. As the doping level (0.1 ≥ x > 0) is increased, the average grain size decreased to become better homogeneous materials with improved breakdown energy strengths. Excessive addition of BBS ( x = 0.15) causes negative effects on microstructures and other traits. The glass-ceramic sample 0.95BCZT-0.05BBS exhibits excellent dielectric permittivity and temperature stability, with the highest energy storage density of 0.3907 J cm −3 at 130 kV cm −1 . These results provide good reference to develop lead-free ceramics of high energy storage density.

Abstract:Glass additive was employed to improve the microstructures and energy storage properties of barium titanate ceramics using liquid phase sintering technology. Microstructural observation indicated that the average grain size reduced obviously with increasing glass concentration. Also, the dielectric constant decreased and the dielectric breakdown strength increased as glass concentration increased. The increase in the breakdown strength with decreasing grain size was consistent with the well-known relationship for the mechanical failure. The activation energies of bulk grain and grain boundary as well as their differences were calculated using measured impedance values. Good inverse dependence of the dielectric breakdown strength on the difference between activation energies of bulk grain and grain boundary was obtained for the glass-added BaTiO3 ceramics. It was also found that the energy storage density of the ceramics increased gradually with increasing glass concentration. Possible effect of the interfacial polarization in degrading the energy storage property was discussed.

Abstract:Dielectric strength and energy storage density in Ba6-3xLa8+2xTi18O54 (x=0.5, 2/3, and 0.75) ceramics were investigated as functions of composition and microstructure. With increasing x, although the dielectric constant decreased from 113 to 102, the energy storage density increased from 2.3J/cm(3) to 3.2J/cm(3) due to the increased dielectric strength for ceramics prepared by conventional sintering. The energy storage was further improved to 4.2J/cm(3) in ceramics prepared by spark plasma sintering under an electric field of 1058kV/cm. Both dielectric strength and energy storage density in the present ceramics indicated the strong processing and microstructure dependence. The optimum dielectric strength and energy storage density were achieved in the dense ceramics with fine grains, while both dielectric strength and energy storage density decreased in the ceramics with coarse columnar grains.

Abstract:In this study, lead-free ceramics (1− x )[0.90BaTiO 3 –0.10Bi(Mg 1/2 Ti 1/2 )O 3 ]– x (Na 0.5 Bi 0.5 ) 0.7 Sr 0.3 TiO 3 (abbreviated as (1− x )(BT-BMT)– x BNST, x = 0.00, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, and 0.20) were prepared using the solid-phase reaction method. The effect of (Na 0.5 Bi 0.5 ) 0.7 Sr 0.3 TiO 3 (BNST) doping on the dielectric and energy-storage properties of 0.90BaTiO 3 –0.10Bi(Mg 1/2 Ti 1/2 )O 3 (BT-BMT) ceramics was investigated. The maximum polarization strength ( P max ) was obtained when x = 0.15 at a breakdown field ( E b ) of 480 kV/cm, and the optimal energy-storage performance was W rec = 4.25 J/cm 3 and η = 87.49%. Excellent stability in both frequency and temperature was observed in the frequency conversion range of 1–120 Hz and variable temperature test from 30 to 140 °C. Moreover, the BT-BMT–0.15BNST energy-storage ceramics with rapid discharge ( t 0.9 = 4 ~ 47 ns), high power density ( P D = 155.2 MW/cm 3 ), and stable performance have great potential in pulse capacitors. In this study, we successfully developed ternary-doped energy-storage ceramics with outstanding energy-storage capabilities in BNT matrices. We comprehensively examined their crystal structures, microstates, and energy-storage properties. These insights offer new perspectives for research in the field of lead-free barium titanate-based ceramics.

Abstract:High-entropy (1−x)Bi0.5Na0.5K0.5Ba0.5Ca0.5TiO3-xBaTiO3 (BNKBCT-BT, x = 0.02, 0.06, 0.10, 0.14 and 0.20) ceramics are successfully prepared via the solid-state reaction method. The XRD and Raman analyses reveal that all samples exhibit a pseudo-cubic phase structure. With increasing x, the a is gradually increased, resulting in the expansion of unit cell volume. A strong frequency dispersion appeared around T m , demonstrating that the as-prepared ceramics is a relaxor ferroelectric. Owing to the increase in the degree of lattice disorder, as well as relaxation and thermal evolution of PUs, the as-prepared ceramics exhibit a broad relaxor behavior. The ΔP is effectively increased by doping BT, which is conducive to achieving excellent energy storage properties. Moreover, W rec of all samples is more than 1.31 J/cm3 and, at x = 0.20, W rec reaches the maximum value of 2.24 J/cm3 at 140 kV/cm. These results indicate that high-entropy (1−x)BNKBCT-xBT ceramics are promising materials for energy storage applications.

Properties and Microstructure of Ultrafine-Crystalline BaTiO3-based Energy Storage Ceramics

Abstract:Al2 O3 , SiO2 and ZnO were coated around nano-sized BaTiO3 particles by means of aqueous chemical coating. Then, BaTiO3-based energy storage ceramic material with average grain size of 120 nm was fabricated by the two-step sintering method. The coating layer can restrain grain growth and abnormal grain growth, and can enhance significantly the AC breakdown strength of the ma-terial to over 150 kV·cm-1 , while providing energy density of 0. 829 J·cm-3 . Energy-dispersive spectroscopy proves the gathering of doping elements near grain boundaries, thus indicating the existence of a core-shell structure. High-temperature impedance spectrosco-py and fitting results further explain that the energy storage properties were improved. Although the energy density of this ultrafine-crystalline ceramic material is moderate, the advantages of fine grains and low sintering temperature make it possible for the material to be used in multilayer ceramic capacitors, which can increase energy storage by orders of magnitude. This improvement is impossible to achieve with conventional energy storage ceramics.

Abstract:The effect of sintering temperature on microstructure, dielectric properties and energy storage properties of BaTiO3–(Sr1−1.5xBix)TiO3 (x=0.09) (BT–SBT) ceramics was investigated. The sintering temperature has pronounced influence on the grain size, shrinkage, and dielectric properties of the BT–SBT ceramics. With increasing sintering temperature, the dielectric constant increases largely. However, the increasing tendency of the dielectric breakdown strength (BDS) is less noticeable but become more evident with the consideration of Weibull modulus. For the BT-SBT ceramics, the unreleased energy density decreases and the electric field stability of the energy storage efficiency enhances with the increase of sintering temperature.

Abstract:Dense Ba(0.4)Sr(0.6)TiO(3)ceramics with fine grains and uniform microstructure were prepared by sol-gel method and spark plasma sintering (SPS). The dielectric properties, microstructures, and energy storage performance of spark plasma sintered Ba(0.4)Sr(0.6)TiO(3)ceramics were evaluated. FineBa(0.4)Sr(0.6)TiO(3) powders were synthesized by sol-gel method at above 750 degrees C. SPS technique showed its advantages in suppressing exaggerated grain growth and increasing the relative density of Ba(0.4)Sr(0.6)TiO(3)ceramics. Diffuse phase transition and nearly linear P-E behavior were observed in all samples. Moderate dielectric constant (similar to 960), low dielectric loss (similar to 0.003), high electrical breakdown strength (similar to 240 kV/cm), significantly enhanced energy storage density (similar to 1.23 J/cm3) and ultrahigh energy storage efficiency (similar to 94.52%) were obtained in Bao,4Sr06TiO3 ceramics by using sol-gel method and spark plasma sintering.
