Abstract:Nowadays in China, oral and maxillofacial radiology has been developed for use in imaging diagnoses like general radiology. Simultaneously, interventional radiology, experimental radiology and the application of computer techniques in the field of oral radiology have been developing recently. Current Status: The survey of oral radiology in 38 dental schools or faculties, the founding of the Chinese Society of Oral Radiology, and as an example, the service, teaching and research of Stomatological School of Beijing Medical University are presented. Future Perspective: The contents of “Stomatology” in China are quite different from western countries, especially in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery. Plastic surgery and oncologic surgery of the head and neck are mainly included in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery. So, the field of oral radiology in China covers these types of diseases as well. In the near future, the following aspects will be promoted and developed more rapidly: A) Interventional radiology of the oral and maxillofacial region B) Direct Digital radiography and computer-aided imaging analysis C) Much greater use of imaging diagnostic techniques at dental clinics, imaging diagnosis D) Experimental oral radiology

Abstract:China is the most highly populated developing country. As with other scientific disciplines, dentistry (stomatology) is progressively growing since 1949 when the new China was founded. Due to the closing of the country to international discourse for several decades, international counterparts know very little about dentistry or stomatology, including the sub-discipline oral and maxillofacial surgery. This paper is aimed to introduce the scope, give a brief history, update clinical and basic research, and discuss the future of oral and maxillofacial surgery in China. Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to present salient background information on the oral care situation and organization in China and to review epidemiological literature that has been published on adults in Chinese dental journals during the last 20 years as a context for understanding ongoing oral health research activities in China. Searches were conducted through Medline as well as Chinese language catalogues and around 30 Chinese dental journals. Most oral health surveys on adults were conducted after 1970 mainly on residents living in big cities, which are also the location of major medical universities. Surveys conducted among farmers were uncommon. Dental caries and periodontal disease were the major dental diseases studied. Only a few surveys on people's oral health knowledge, attitudes and behavior were conducted. Papers concerning dental treatment needs and utilization of dental services among adults were scarce. Sample size was usually not a major problem in these surveys but the sampling methods and diagnostic criteria used were often poorly defined. Mean DMFT scores between 2 and 6 were reported in the 35-44-year-olds and between 9 and 16 in the elderly younger than 75 years. Calculus and gingivitis were reported to be common in adult Chinese; the proportion of subjects with shallow and deep periodontal pockets was not high. Complete edentulousness in the 60-69-year-olds was usually reported to be less than 10%. About 14% of the 35-44-year-olds and 19% of the 65-74-year-olds did not brush their teeth daily.

Abstract:With rapid social and economic progresses in China in recent years,oral and maxillofacial surgery is being faced with great challenges and new development possibilities.This article analyzes the current status of oral and maxillofacial surgery and investigates its growth trends in future based on a survey of the population and medical implements in Zhejiang province.It is believed that more and more oral and maxillofacial surgeries will be dominantly performed in several larger central cities.The proportion of minimal invasive surgeries in oral and maxillofacial regions will be increased.Diagnosis and management of oral and maxillofacial traumas,congenital and acquired deformities, benign and malignant tumours as well as dental implants will be the mainstream of oral and maxillofacial surgery,in the coming years.

Abstract:Objective: To review the current oral health status and oral health care models in China in an effort to provide recommendations for the future implementation of these models.Methods: A systematic literature review was conducted. The Medline, EMBASE, CNKI and Wanfang databases were searched for English and Chinese articles reporting relevant data from 1949 to the present. Data from three national oral health epidemiology surveys, Chinese government reports and national statistics yearbooks from 2011 to 2015 were also included.Results: The oral health status of preschool children were significantly improved over the past 10 years, while caries experience among 35 to 45-year-old and 65 to 74-year-old groups showed an increase in 2005. The status of poor oral hygiene was observed for both adolescent and elderly groups. The ratio of dentist-to-population in China was reported as 1: 10,000 in 2009, which was much lower than that of developed countries. The workforce of the dental service is distributed unevenly and remains insufficient for such a highly populated country. Although the need for dental treatment was perceived as high, the true demand for dental service in China was relatively low and not seen as critical. This situation clearly did not reflect so well with true oral disease conditions. There are several basic social medical insurance systems available in China, which covered most of the population's need for medical attention, but seldom covered dental treatment.Conclusion: National oral health policy in China should emphasise oral health promotion, especially in school education for children and young adults, to further strengthen daily toothbrushing, use of fluoride toothpaste and dental floss, and actively promote annual oral health examination. Oral health management should focus on cost-effective primary and secondary prevention with the long-term goal of maintaining oral health.
The Past, Present, and Future of Dentoalveolar Surgery in China

Abstract:Dentoalveolar surgery, formerly known as dental surgery or oral surgery, is one of the basic branches of oral and maxillofacial surgery. While it has a long history; however, there are great differences in its evolution globally. This article presents a brief review on the development of dentoalveolar surgery internationally. Furthermore, a systematic review on its development in China, is detailed in 6 stages. However, while its development in China since 2005 has been most profound, improvements are still needed in treatment concepts, instruments, treatment processes, attention to high-risk populations and cooperation with other dental/medical disciplines. Future projections based on present standards of care are also presented.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To collect information and statistical data regarding the current oral health care and dental education resources in China.METHODS:Electronic databases were searched and a literature review conducted. The homepages of relevant universities and colleges were visited to collect dental education information. In addition, private conversations with related experts were conducted.RESULTS:Compared with the 3rd National Oral Health Survey (2005), the ratio of gingival bleeding in individuals aged 33 to 44 years has increased in the last 10 years. The average percentage of residents visiting departments of dentistry in public hospitals is less than 10%. The total number of dentists and assistant dentists increased to 167,227 in 2016, with a ratio of 1.21 per 10,000 people. There is a great imbalance in the distribution of dental practitioners among the provinces. There are 101 dental schools or departments of stomatology that provide 5-year dental training courses and offer bachelor's degrees in dentistry, with another 93 dental institutions offering shorter 3-year training courses for assistant dentists.CONCLUSION:The results of the present study show that there has been significant change during recent years in China. However, the ratio of dental practitioners to the population as well as the number of dental visits carried out is still much lower than in developed countries and does not satisfy the demand for dental care in China. The quality and quantity of dental education, including continuing dental education, calls for improvement in the future.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To investigate the current status and distribution of resources for oral health in China, by means of analysing national data from the National Investigation of Resources for Oral Health.METHODS:The National Investigation of Resources for Oral Health in China was performed in 2015, in parallel with the 4th National Oral Health Survey of China (2015 to 2016). A structured questionnaire on resources for oral health was used to collect the data of professional institutions and stomatological/dental workforce in each province. For each province, the local Investigation Group was responsible to summarise the status and distribution of institutions with stomatological/dental departments and stomatological/dental workforce. Descriptive analysis of resources for oral health was performed to learn about the number and percentage of each category both for each province and nationally. The ratio of number of stomatological/dental workforce to population was also calculated and compared with the criteria of the World Health Organisation (WHO).RESULTS:There were totally 75,399 stomatological/dental departments nationally in all professional institutions in the mainland of China, most of which were set in institutions of primary health care services. Institutions of private sectors accounted for a higher proportion (69.8%) which was over two-fold compared to that of public ones (30.2%). General hospitals were the major part of hospitals with stomatological/dental departments compared with stomatological/dental specialised hospitals. Stomatological/dental clinics were the majority of institutions of primary health care services, compared to community health care service centres/stations and township health care services. Amongst all professional institutions of public health with stomatological/dental departments, 35.0% were maternal and child health care services and 11.2% were institutions for prevention and control of oral diseases. The total number of stomatological/dental workforce in the country was 314,347, among whom 171,587 (54.6%) were stomatologists/dentists. The ratio of number of stomatologists/dentists to population was 1:7,768 nationally, which was lower than the WHO standard of 1:5,000.CONCLUSION:The National Investigation of Resources for Oral Health in China exhibited the current status and distribution of resources for oral health over the country, whereas insufficiencies of stomatological/dental workforce and institutions and inequalities of their distribution were found nationally. This could provide some policy suggestions for the health authorities in China to promote oral health in the Chinese population in the future.

Abstract:With the rapid development of imaging technology, the application of dental imaging in diagnosis, treatment planning, intraoperative surgical navigation, monitoring of treatment or lesion development and assessment of treatment outcomes is playing an essential role in oral healthcare. The increased total number of dental X-ray examinations is accompanied by a relatively significant increase in collective dose to patients as well as to dental healthcare workers, which is harmful to human bodies to a certain degree. Some radiation protection standards and guidelines in dental radiology have been published in European countries, US, Canada and Australia, etc. Adherence to these standards and guidelines helps to achieve images with diagnostic quality and avoid unnecessary and repeated exposures. However, no radiation protection standard or guideline with regard to dental X-ray examinations has been put in force so far in mainland China. Therefore, a literature review on available radiation protection standards and guidelines was conducted to provide reference to the development of radiation protection standards or guidelines in mainland China.

Abstract:Aims: The aim of this study was to analyse the status, hotspots and trends of research on oral care for the elderly in mainland China in the past 20 years through bibliometrics, which aims to provide new ideas and targets for future clinical work and research. Design: Bibliometric analysis. Methods: Relevant literature was retrieved from China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang, China Science and Technology Journal Database, Web of Science and PubMed. NoteExpress, Co-Occurrence and CiteSpace were used to analyse bibliometric features in terms of year of publication, journal of publication, authors, institution and keywords. Results: A total of 716 related articles were obtained. The number of publications shows an increasing trend over time, only 2017-2021; 309 papers were published, accounting for 43.2% of the total number of publications. A total of 238 articles were published in Science Citation Index journals or Chinese core journals, accounting for 33.2% of the total number of articles. The study of oral health-related quality of life in the elderly is a hot research topic. There is a lack of research on the elderly living in elderly care facilities.

Abstract:Objective To analyze the characteristics of published radiology original articles in China,and compare radiology research inboard and abroad.Methods According to the Contents of Chinese Science Core Periodicals in 2012,there were 15 comprehensive radiological core periodicals in China.All of them were retrospectively surveyed,and original articles published between October 2011 and October 2012were evaluated.The following information was abstracted from each article:radiologic technique used,radiologic subspeciahy,type of research,sample size and study design.At the same time,all the original articles from two top radiology journals,Radiology and European Radiology (ER) at the same period were evaluated.Chi-square test was used to compare the composition percentage inboard and abroad.Results There were 2784 original articles published in the 15 Chinese top radiological periodicals in total The most commonly used radiologic techniques were CT (1093 of 2784,39.3％),MRI (824 of 2784,29.6％) and intervention (402 of 2784,14.4％).Radiology and ER totally published 560 original articles.MRI (265 of 560,47.3％),CT (170 of 560,30.4％) and mixed techniques (63 of 560,11.3％) were most used.In China,as much as 2572 (92.4％) articles were clinical research,115 (4.1％) was basic research,9 (0.3％) was clinical and basic research,and 83 (3.2％) was non-basic non-clinical research.The sample size of less than 10,between 10 to 50,and more than 50 was 374 (13.4％),1448 (52.0％) and 847 (30.4％) respectively.339 (12.2％) Chinese articles belonged to perspective research,and 1211 (43.5％) were retrospective.For Radiology and ER,515 (92.0％) articles were clinical research,39 (7.0％) was basic research,3(0.5％) was clinical and basic research,and 3(0.5％) was non-basic non-clinical.The sample size of less than I0,between 10 to 50,and more than 50 was 30 (5.4％),225 (40.2％) and 252 (45.0％) respectively.230 (41.1％) articles belonged to perspective research,and 202 (36.1％) ones were retrospective.Radiology and ER articles used MRI more than that published in Chinese radiology journals (x2 =666.690,P ＜ 0.01).Clinical research was the most commonly used research type both inboard and abroad (x2 =0.116,P ＞0.05).Articles of sample size more than 50 abroad were more than that of China (x2 =44.895,P ＜0.01).Perspective research was used more abroad (x2 =275.667,P ＜ 0.01),and the main research type in China was retrospective.Conclusion Chinese radiology workers might need to do more perspective and larger sample size clinical researches.

Abstract:Oral aesthetics is a branch of stomatology. It is based on oral medicine and guided by medical esthetics, and includes maintainance, restoration and construction of the beauty of teeth, oral cavity and maxillofacial region. The development of oral esthetics in China has a long history. The late 1980s and early 1990s are the important historical periods of the development of oral esthetics in China. In recent years, with the development of social economy and culture, China's oral esthetics has developed rapidly. In September 2016, Chinese Society of Esthetic Dentistry, Chinese Stomatological Association was established in Shanghai. With the goal of esthetics, multidisciplinary integration has become the future development trend of oral esthetics.

Abstract:The process of introduction,creation,and development of science of oral and maxillofacial surgery in China had experienced decades of efforts to achieving its goal toward maturity.Now,from academic point of view,the achievements in the clinical research sector has reached to national and international levels in some aspects.But in recent years,the scientific environment have never been more demanding,it is clear that oral and maxillofacial sector faces challenges in both the short and the long term from other component dental specialty societies.Concerning the future prosperity of this specialty,I intend to make reflects retrospectively and prospectively:gaining effective support from the government and legislation;lay special emphasis on the developmental predicament in current situation;changing mentality to positive thoughts and constructive ideas;facilitating academic exchange programs;attracting,training,and bring up young oral surgeons if we want to create a sustainable future,and exploring potential research areas to achieve new success,etc.
