Abstract:China is the most highly populated developing country. As with other scientific disciplines, dentistry (stomatology) is progressively growing since 1949 when the new China was founded. Due to the closing of the country to international discourse for several decades, international counterparts know very little about dentistry or stomatology, including the sub-discipline oral and maxillofacial surgery. This paper is aimed to introduce the scope, give a brief history, update clinical and basic research, and discuss the future of oral and maxillofacial surgery in China. It will hopefully help international colleagues to have an insight into the developmental history, education system, clinical and basic research achievements, as well as the prospective future of oral and maxillofacial surgery in China

Abstract:With rapid social and economic progresses in China in recent years,oral and maxillofacial surgery is being faced with great challenges and new development possibilities.This article analyzes the current status of oral and maxillofacial surgery and investigates its growth trends in future based on a survey of the population and medical implements in Zhejiang province.It is believed that more and more oral and maxillofacial surgeries will be dominantly performed in several larger central cities.The proportion of minimal invasive surgeries in oral and maxillofacial regions will be increased.Diagnosis and management of oral and maxillofacial traumas,congenital and acquired deformities, benign and malignant tumours as well as dental implants will be the mainstream of oral and maxillofacial surgery,in the coming years.

Abstract:The process of introduction,creation,and development of science of oral and maxillofacial surgery in China had experienced decades of efforts to achieving its goal toward maturity.Now,from academic point of view,the achievements in the clinical research sector has reached to national and international levels in some aspects.But in recent years,the scientific environment have never been more demanding,it is clear that oral and maxillofacial sector faces challenges in both the short and the long term from other component dental specialty societies.Concerning the future prosperity of this specialty,I intend to make reflects retrospectively and prospectively:gaining effective support from the government and legislation;lay special emphasis on the developmental predicament in current situation;changing mentality to positive thoughts and constructive ideas;facilitating academic exchange programs;attracting,training,and bring up young oral surgeons if we want to create a sustainable future,and exploring potential research areas to achieve new success,etc.

Abstract:Time flies like an arrow.It has been 20 years since the founding of the Chinese Societv of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery(CSOMS)in 1986,great progresses have taken place both in the construction of organization and clinical and scientific researches during the past two decades.Oral and maxillofacial surgery in China is characterized by a broader scope of practice compared with the same speciality in the western countries.Some of its clinical technologies are approaching or reaching the internationally advanced level,while much is needed to be done in the field of basic scientific researches.This special article reviews the history of CSOMS from the following three aspects:organization construction,academic activities and current status of clinical and research works in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Greater achievements are expected in the near future through the arduous efforts and unremitting pursuits of all oral and maxillofacial surgeons in China under the correct lead of CSOMS.

Abstract:The authors made a profound review on the development and the recent status of craniomaxillofacial surgery in China during past three decades. The emphases were placed on the following aspects: the modifications of the reconstructive procedure and minimal invasive mode, the researches on molecular genetic characteristics of the congenital craniofacial malformations, the clinical applications of three-dimensional digital computer-aided techniques (including three-dimensional printing and prefabricated template for precious osteotomies), the craniomaxillofacial defects reconstructing by using the distraction osteogenesis and osseous integrated titanium implant and prothesis, etc. Finally, the authors outlooked prospectively the future trends of the craniomaxillofacial surgery.
Seventy Years of Development and Prospects of the Ocular Oncology Specialty in China

Abstract:Ocular tumors include intraocular tumors and tumors of the eyelid, orbit, conjunctiva and lacrimal apparatus. After seventy years of continued growth, ocular oncology in China, from small to large and from weak to strong, has made great achievements. Especially since the beginning of the new century, there has been all-round and rapid development. The mechanism of ocular tumorigenesis has been elucidated based on the biobank and animal models. New therapeutic techniques and treatment modalities have been established based on multi-center cohort studies. The team competence and the discipline level have been improved based on academic organization constructions and international exchanges. Looking into the future, ocular oncology in China will move on in gene detection and early diagnosis, basic research and drug targeting, interdisciplinary, intelligent diagnosis and treatment, clinical research and translational medicine, with the support of national strategies and scientific and technological innovation, to further improve the survival rate, the ocular salvage rate and the quality of life for patients with ocular tumors. The Past, Present, and Future of Dentoalveolar Surgery in China

Abstract:Dentoalveolar surgery, formerly known as dental surgery or oral surgery, is one of the basic branches of oral and maxillofacial surgery. While it has a long history; however, there are great differences in its evolution globally. This article presents a brief review on the development of dentoalveolar surgery internationally. Furthermore, a systematic review on its development in China, is detailed in 6 stages. However, while its development in China since 2005 has been most profound, improvements are still needed in treatment concepts, instruments, treatment processes, attention to high-risk populations and cooperation with other dental/medical disciplines. Future projections based on present standards of care are also presented.

Abstract:Nowadays in China, oral and maxillofacial radiology has been developed for use in imaging diagnoses like general radiology. Simultaneously, interventional radiology, experimental radiology and the application of computer techniques in the field of oral radiology have been developing recently. Current Status: The survey of oral radiology in 38 dental schools or faculties, the founding of the Chinese Society of Oral Radiology, and as an example, the service, teaching and research of Stomatological School of Beijing Medical University are presented. Future Perspective: The contents of “Stomatology” in China are quite different from western countries, especially in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery. Plastic surgery and oncologic surgery of the head and neck are mainly included in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery. So, the field of oral radiology in China covers these types of diseases as well. In the near future, the following aspects will be promoted and developed more rapidly: A) Interventional radiology of the oral and maxillofacial region B) Direct Digital radiography and computer-aided imaging analysis C) Much greater use of imaging diagnostic techniques at dental clinics, imaging diagnosis D) Experimental oral radiology

Abstract:The Fourth Chinese National Conference on Oral and Maxillofacial Oncology was held on October 15-16, 2005 in Chengdu, Sichuan Province. This conference was sponsored by Chinese Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and well organized by Sichuan University College of Stomatology. A total of 274 papers were accepted for presentation (48 were for oral presentation), which involved various respects on oral and Maxillofacial neoplasm, salivary gland diseases and vascular anomalies, and reflected the latest progress in both basic scientific research and clinical management of patients with oral and maxillofacial tumors (including vascular anomalies) as well as salivary gland diseases. Abstract:Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) surgery in China, as an important part of oral and maxillofacial surgery, has made significant progress in the past 20 years. It is mainly reflected in the reduction of TMJ dislocated joint disc, prosthetic total TMJ reconstruction, and the treatment of adult condylar fracture. There are major controversies about the surgical methods and indications for the reduction of the dislocated/displacement joint disc of the temporomandibular disorders.

Abstract:China has the largest human biological and pathological tissue resource in terms of both quantity and diversity, whichis true for oral cancer as well. However, this unique and valuable resource did not yield expected results in clinical translational research.On one side, clinicians lack experience in identification of research topics, even with plenty of clinical specimens. On the otherside, researchers consider high impact publications as the top priority instead of clinical significance. The disalignment of the interestsbetween these two sides led to inefficient and inadequate communications and collaborations. To change the current situation, we needto encourage clinicians to raise questions and generate research topics from clinical practice and to actively participate in translationalresearch. Meanwhile, researchers need to understand basics of clinical medicine and design research projects with a focus on clinicalproblems. Closer collaborations between clinicians and researchers will help to identify new biomarkers of clinical significance throughsystematic clinical studies, which have the potential to translate into practical knowledge in diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of diseases.We can further evaluate and validate these translational results systematically by large-scale random clinical trials.

Abstract:This century has seen significant advances in the treatment and research of gastric cancer in China. Chinese scholars have made a series of key technological breakthroughs in minimally invasive surgery, perioperative treatment and artificial intelligence diagnosis. These world-leading clinical researches have improved treatment outcomes and reduced surgical trauma. Global surveillance of trends in cancer survival 2000-14 reported that survival of gastric cancer in China has significantly improved during the last 20 years. This paper reviews the research history of surgical oncology for gastric cancer in China, summarises the experience and attempts to explore the future direction.

Abstract:Oral cancer is one of the most common malignant tumors of the head and neck, not only affects the appearance, but also affects eating and even endangers life. The clinical treatments of oral cancer mainly include surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. However, unsatisfactory therapeutic effect and toxic side effects are still the main problems in clinical treatment. Tumor microenvironment (TME) is not only closely related to the occurrence, growth, and metastasis of tumor but also works in the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of tumor and prognosis. Future studies should continue to investigate the relationship of TME and oral cancer therapy. This purpose of this review was to analyze the characteristics of oral cancer microenvironment, summarize the traditional oral cancer therapy and immunotherapy strategies, and finally prospect the development prospects of oral cancer immunotherapy. Immunotherapy targeting tumor microenvironment is expected to provide a new strategy for clinical treatment of oral cancer.

Abstract:PURPOSE: To understand the situation of oral oncology literatures published in the foreign oncology journals with higher impact factor and provide references for Chinese oral oncology researchers on submitting articles to these journals. METHODS: Oral oncology literatures published in the recent five years (1998-2002) in the foreign oncology journals with impact factor above 1.000(2002) were professionally searched and analyzed. RESULTS: More than five published oral oncology literatures were found out in 40 kinds of foreign journals with impact factor above 1.000. CONCLUSION: Chinese oral oncology researchers need to understand the characteristics of these literatures and journals for submitting articles to these journals with higher impact factor selectively.

Abstract:Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) develops on the mucosal epithelium of the oral cavity. It accounts for approximately 90% of oral malignancies and impairs appearance, pronunciation, swallowing, and flavor perception. In 2020, 377,713 OSCC cases were reported globally. According to the Global Cancer Observatory (GCO), the incidence of OSCC will rise by approximately 40% by 2040, accompanied by a growth in mortality. Persistent exposure to various risk factors, including tobacco, alcohol, betel quid (BQ), and human papillomavirus (HPV), will lead to the development of oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs), which are oral mucosal lesions with an increased risk of developing into OSCC. Complex and multifactorial, the oncogenesis process involves genetic alteration, epigenetic modification, and a dysregulated tumor microenvironment. Although various therapeutic interventions, such as chemotherapy, radiation, immunotherapy, and nanomedicine, have been proposed to prevent or treat OSCC and OPMDs, understanding the mechanism of malignancies will facilitate the identification of therapeutic and prognostic factors, thereby improving the efficacy of treatment for OSCC patients. This review summarizes the mechanisms involved in OSCC. Moreover, the current therapeutic interventions and prognostic methods for OSCC and OPMDs are discussed to facilitate comprehension and provide several prospective outlooks for the fields.
