Abstract:As medical education undergoes significant internationalization, it is important for the medical education community to understand how different countries structure and provide medical education. This article highlights the current landscape of medical education in China, particularly the changes that have taken place in recent years. It also examines policies and offers suggestions about future strategies for medical education in China. Although many of these changes reflect international trends, Chinese medical education has seen unique transformations that reflect its particular culture and history.

Abstract:The importance of bridging the gap between traditional Chinese medicine (TCM)'s holistic approach and Western medicine's diagnostic technologies, particularly in the context of medical imaging. In this paper, we discussed the challenges faced by TCM colleges in radiology education in China include philosophical differences, resource constraints, faculty expertise variations, and language and cultural barriers. We advocate for the implementation of multifaceted strategies, such as enhancing the comprehensiveness of the syllabus, optimizing the radiology curriculum, and enriching internship experiences. These measures are designed to elevate the quality of radiology education, enhance student engagement, and improve learning outcomes within TCM colleges.

Insights into Imaging

Abstract:Objectives This was the first study to systematically landscape and examine China’s nationwide standardized residency training in radiology. Methods In this retrospective cross-sectional study, we used data from the 2019 national survey of the first two cohorts of 3679 radiology residents who completed training in 2017 and 2018 across all 31 provinces in China. A total of 1163 (32%) residents participated in the survey. Multivariable logistic regression was used to examine the implementation frequency of 24 identified training tasks (categorized into six competencies) by region, demographics, and other residency information. Results Among the 1163 respondents, 592 (51%) were trained in the more developed eastern region. Of the 24 identified training tasks, 15 were implemented significantly differently across regions, while the frequency of the most frequently conducted tasks (e.g., CT, MR, and radiograph interpretation and reporting) was consistent. The top 10 tasks all fell into the patient care and medical knowledge competency domains, while other competencies tended to be neglected. We found region and marital status were the most influential factors of training task implementation frequencies. Respondents trained in the northeast and the west were more likely to report, for instance, radiological examination recommendation (OR = 1.91, 95%CI = 1.27–2.88), as “very frequent.” Married respondents were more likely to report first-line night shift as “very frequent” (OR = 1.71, 95%CI = 1.29–2.26). Conclusions Despite the fast-win achievements of developing a national radiology residency training program, there is a gap to train quality and homogeneous radiologists across regions. Future improvement should be more tailored to residents’ personal characteristics and emphasize some “soft” competencies (e.g., communication skills).

Quantitative Imaging in Medicine and Surgery

Abstract:Following tremendous economic progress, society in China is also undergoing fundamental changes, as is the healthcare system. Currently the training of Chinese young doctors and their future work placement are all undergoing re-structuring. We compiled some thoughts and opinions on the topic of 'should clinicians in China engage in research?', and publish them as a special report in this issue of Quantitative Imaging in Medicine and Surgery (QIMS). The contributors included some editorial members of this journal, and a few personal friends. Besides a few minor linguistic corrections, opinions from the contributors have not been edited, as we want authors' to write their own independent views. However, it is possible there is a selection bias of the contributors of this paper; more likely those who are interested in the medical research are selected and therefore the views of the contributors may not be generalizable. To compare the structure and funding of China with other countries, authors from UK, The Netherlands, France, and USA are also invited.

Abstract:Objective To analyze the characteristics of published radiology original articles in China,and compare radiology research inboard and abroad.Methods According to the Contents of Chinese Science Core Periodicals in 2012,there were 15 comprehensive radiological core periodicals in China.All of them were retrospectively surveyed,and original articles published between October 2011 and October 2012were evaluated.The following information was abstracted from each article:radiologic technique used,radiologic subspeciahy,type of research,sample size and study design.At the same time,all the original articles from two top radiology journals,Radiology and European Radiology (ER) at the same period were evaluated.Chi-square test was used to compare the composition percentage inboard and abroad.Results There were 2784 original articles published in the 15 Chinese top radiological periodicals in total The most commonly used radiologic techniques were CT (1093 of 2784,39.3％),MRI (824 of 2784,29.6％) and intervention (402 of 2784,14.4％).Radiology and ER totally published 560 original articles.MRI (265 of 560,47.3％),CT (170 of 560,30.4％) and mixed techniques (63 of 560,11.3％) were most used.In China,as much as 2572 (92.4％) articles were clinical research,115 (4.1％) was basic research,9 (0.3％) was clinical and basic research,and 83 (3.2％) was non-basic non-clinical research.The sample size of less than 10,between 10 to 50,and more than 50 was 374 (13.4％),1448 (52.0％) and 847 (30.4％) respectively.339 (12.2％) Chinese articles belonged to perspective research,and 1211 (43.5％) were retrospective.For Radiology and ER,515 (92.0％) articles were clinical research,39 (7.0％) was basic research,3(0.5％) was clinical and basic research,and 3(0.5％) was non-basic non-clinical.The sample size of less than I0,between 10 to 50,and more than 50 was 30 (5.4％),225 (40.2％) and 252 (45.0％) respectively.230 (41.1％) articles belonged to perspective research,and 202 (36.1％) ones were retrospective.Radiology and ER articles used MRI more than that published in Chinese radiology journals (x2 =666.690,P ＜ 0.01).Clinical research was the most commonly used research type both inboard and abroad (x2 =0.116,P ＞0.05).Articles of sample size more than 50 abroad were more than that of China (x2 =44.895,P ＜0.01).Perspective research was used more abroad (x2 =275.667,P ＜ 0.01),and the main research type in China was retrospective.Conclusion Chinese radiology workers might need to do more perspective and larger sample size clinical researches.

Abstract:AIM:To assess the state of radiology education across Europe by means of a survey study.METHODS:A comprehensive 23-item radiology survey was distributed via email to the International Society of Radiology members, national radiological societies, radiologists and medical physicists. Reminders to complete the survey were sent and the results were analyzed over a period of 4 mo (January-April 2016). Survey questions include length of medical school and residency training; availability of fellowship and subspecialty training; number of residency programs in each country; accreditation pathways; research training; and medical physics education. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze and summarize data.RESULTS:Radiology residency training ranges from 2-6 years with a median of 5 years, and follows 1 year of internship training in 55% (12 out of 22) European countries. Subspecialty fellowship training is offered in 55% (12 out of 22) European countries. Availability for specialization training by national societies is limited to eight countries. For nearly all respondents, less than fifty percent of radiologists travel abroad for specialization. Nine of 22 (41%) European countries have research requirements during residency. The types of certifying exam show variation where 64% (14 out of 22) European countries require both written and oral boards, 23% (5 out of 22) require oral examinations only, and 5% (1 out of 22) require written examinations only. A degree in medical physics is offered in 59% (13 out of 22) European countries and is predominantly taught by medical physicists. Nearly all respondents report that formal examinations in medical physics are required.CONCLUSION:Comparative learning experiences across the continent will help guide the development of comprehensive yet pragmatic infrastructures for radiology education and collaborations in radiology education worldwide.

Abstract:The field of Radiology is continually changing, requiring corresponding evolution in both medical student and resident training to adequately prepare the next generation of radiologists. With advancements in adult education theory and a deeper understanding of perception in imaging interpretation, expert educators are reshaping the training landscape by introducing innovative teaching methods to align with increased workload demands and emerging technologies. These include the use of peer and interdisciplinary teaching, gamification, case repositories, flipped-classroom models, social media, and drawing and comics. This publication aims to investigate these novel approaches and offer persuasive evidence supporting their incorporation into the updated Radiology curriculum.

Abstract:The department of radiology, as one of the public platforms for standardized residency training, is very crucial to the training of high level clinicians and essential to improve quality of medical care. According to the present situation and existing problems of standardized residency training for the non-imaging professional residents in the department of radiology in China, combining with our practice, this article primarily explores the improvement of the rules and regulations, the specific arrangement of the rotation, daily and graduation examination forms, and training quality supervision, etc. We hope to improve the training quality of the non-imaging professional residents' rotation in the department of radiology and explore more suitable and effective medical educative strategies.
