Abstract:Let $mathbf G$ be a complex orthogonal or complex symplectic group, and let $G$ be a real form of $mathbf G$, namely $G$ is a real orthogonal group, a real symplectic group, a quaternionic orthogonal group, or a quaternionic symplectic group. For a fixed parity $mathbb pin mathbb Z/2mathbb Z$, we define a set $mathrm{Nil}^{mathbb p}_{mathbf G}(mathfrak g)$ of nilpotent $mathbf G$-orbits $mathfrak g$ (the Lie algebra of $mathbf G$). When $mathbb p$ is the parity of the dimension of the standard module of $mathbf G$, this is the set of the stably trivial special nilpotent orbits, which includes all rigid special nilpotent orbits. For each $mathcal O in mathrm{Nil}^{mathbb p}_{mathbf G}(mathfrak g)$, we construct all unipotent representations of $G$ (or its metaplectic cover when $G$ is a real symplectic group and $mathbb p$ is odd) attached to $mathcal O$ via the method of theta lifting and show particular that they are unitary.

Abstract:For semisimple groups, possibly multiplied by U(1)'s, the number of Yang-Mills gauge fields is equal to the number of generators of the group. In this paper, it is shown that, for non-semisimple groups, the number of Yang-Mills fields can be larger. These additional Yang-Mills fields are not irrelevant because they appear in the gauge transformations of the original Yang-Mills fields. Such non-semisimple Yang-Mills theories may lead to physical consequences worth studying. The non-semisimple group with only two generators that do not commute is studied in detail.

Abstract:We investigate the general conditions for an all-orders finite theory by redefining the coupling constants such that both the gauge-coupling $\ensuremath{\beta}$ function and the anomalous dimensions of the gauge superfield and chiral superfields vanish. These explicit expressions for the conditions of all-orders finiteness involve solutions of an infinite number of equations. Both a solving process and a criterion for the existence of the solutions of the equations are given.

Abstract:Let G be one of the classical Lie groups GL(n+1)(R), GL(n+1)(C), U(p, q + 1), O(p, q + 1), On+1(C), SO(p, q + 1), SOn+1(C), and let G' be respectively the subgroup GL(n)(R), GL(n)(C), U(p, q), O(p, q), O-n(C), SO(p, q), SO (C), embedded in G in the standard way. Abstract:In this paper, we investigate two types of U(1)-gauge field theories on G_2-manifolds. One is the U(1)-Yang-Mills theory which admits the classical instanton solutions, we show that G_2-manifolds emerge from the anti-self-dual U(1) instantons, which is an analogy of Yang's result for Calabi-Yau manifolds. The other one is the higher-order U(1)-Chern-Simons theory as a generalization of Kähler-Chern-Simons theory, by suitable choice of gauge and regularization technique, we calculate the partition function under semiclassical approximation.

Abstract:One of the simplest examples of noninvertible symmetries in higher dimensions appears in 4D Maxwell theory, where its SL(2,Z) duality group can be combined with gauging subgroups of its electric and magnetic 1-form symmetries to yield such defects at many different values of the coupling. Even though N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theory also has an SL(2,Z) duality group, it only seems to share two types of such noninvertible defects with Maxwell theory (known as duality and triality defects). Motivated by this apparent difference, we begin our investigation of the fate of these symmetries by studying the case of 4D N=4 U(1) gauge theory, which contains Maxwell theory in its content. Surprisingly, we find that the noninvertible defects of Maxwell theory give rise, when combined with the standard U(1) symmetry acting on the free fermions, to defects that act on local operators as elements of the U(1) outer automorphism of the N=4 superconformal algebra, an operation that was referred to in the past as the "bonus symmetry." Turning to the non-Abelian case of N=4 SYM theory, the bonus symmetry is not an exact symmetry of the theory, but is known to emerge at the supergravity limit. Representation Theory of General Linear Supergroups in Characteristic 2

Abstract:We develop representation theory of general linear groups in the category $\text{Ver}_4^+$, the simplest tensor category which is not Frobenius exact. Since $\text{Ver}_4^+$ is a reduction of the category of supervector spaces to characteristic $2$ (by a result of Venkatesh, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1507.05142" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1507.05142">arXiv:1507.05142</a>), these groups may be viewed as general linear supergroups in characteristic $2$. More precisely, every object in $\text{Ver}_4^+$ has the form $m\mathbf{1}+nP$ where $P$ is the indecomposable projective, and $\text{GL}(m\mathbf{1}+nP)$ is the reduction to characteristic $2$ of $\text{GL}(m+n|n)$. We explicitly describe the irreducible representations of $\text{GL}(P)$ and then use this description to classify the irreducible representations of $\text{GL}(m\mathbf{1}+nP)$ for general $m,n$. We also define some subgroups of $\text{GL}(m\mathbf{1}+nP)$ and classify their irreducible representations. Finally, we conjecture a Steinberg tensor product theorem for $\text{Ver}_4^+$ involving the square of the Frobenius map.

Abstract:During the last few years, a new approach to language processing has started to emerge, which has become known under various labels such as "data-oriented parsing", "corpus-based interpretation", and "tree-bank grammar" (cf. van den Berg et al. 1994; Bod 1992-96; Bod et al. 1996a/b; Bonnema 1996; Charniak 1996a/b; Goodman 1996; Kaplan 1996; Rajman 1995a/b; Scha 1990-92; Sekine & Grishman 1995; Sima'an et al. 1994; Sima'an 1995-96; Tugwell 1995). This approach, which we will call "data-oriented processing" or "DOP", embodies the assumption that human language perception and production works with representations of concrete past language experiences, rather than with abstract linguistic rules. The models that instantiate this approach therefore maintain large corpora of linguistic representations of previously occurring utterances. When processing a new input utterance, analyses of this utterance are constructed by combining fragments from the corpus; the occurrence-frequencies of the fragments are used to estimate which analysis is the most probable one. In this paper we give an in-depth discussion of a data-oriented processing model which employs a corpus of labelled phrase-structure trees. Then we review some other models that instantiate the DOP approach. Many of these models also employ labelled phrase-structure trees, but use different criteria for extracting fragments from the corpus or employ different disambiguation strategies (Bod 1996b; Charniak 1996a/b; Goodman 1996; Rajman 1995a/b; Sekine & Grishman 1995; Sima'an 1995-96); other models use richer formalisms for their corpus annotations (van den Berg et al. 1994; Bod et al., 1996a/b; Bonnema 1996; Kaplan 1996; Tugwell 1995).

From $G_2$ to $SO(8)$: Emergence and reminiscence of supersymmetry and triality

Abstract:We construct a (1+1)-dimension continuum model of 4-component fermions incorporating the exceptional Lie group symmetry $G_2$. Four gapped and five gapless phases are identified via the one-loop renormalization group analysis. The gapped phases are controlled by four different stable $SO(8)$ Gross-Neveu fixed points, among which three exhibit an emergent triality, while the rest one possesses the self-triality, i.e., invariant under the triality mapping. The gapless phases include three $SO(7)$ critical ones, a $G_2$ critical one, and a Luttinger liquid. Three $SO(7)$ critical phases correspond to different $SO(7)$ Gross-Neveu fixed points connected by the triality relation similar to the gapped SO(8) case. The $G_2$ critical phase is controlled by an unstable fixed point described by a direct product of the Ising and tricritical Ising conformal field theories with the central charges $c=\frac{1}{2}$ and $c=\frac{7}{10}$, respectively, while the latter one is known to possess spacetime supersymmetry. In the lattice realization with a Hubbard-type interaction, the triality is broken into the duality between two $SO(7)$ symmetries and the supersymmetric $G_2$ critical phase exhibits the degeneracy between bosonic and fermionic states, which are reminiscences of the continuum model.

Abstract:We are concerned with finite-dimensional irreducible representations of the Yangians associated with the orthosymplectic Lie superalgebras ${\frak osp}_{2n+1|2m}$. Every such representation is highest weight and we use embedding theorems and odd reflections of Yangian type to derive necessary conditions for an irreducible highest weight representation to be finite-dimensional. We conjecture that these conditions are also sufficient. We prove the conjecture in the case $n=1$ and arbitrary $m\geqslant 1$.

Abstract:We study theories with 16 supercharges and a discrete energy spectrum. One class of theories has symmetry group $SU(2|4)$. They arise as truncations of $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory. They include the plane-wave matrix model, $2+1$ super Yang-Mills theory on $R\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{S}^{2}$ and $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory on $R\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{S}^{3}/{Z}_{k}$. We explain how to obtain their gravity duals in a unified way. We explore the regions of the geometry that are relevant for the study of some $1/2$ BPS and near BPS states. This leads to a class of two dimensional (4,4) supersymmetric sigma models with nonzero $H$ flux, including a massive deformed WZW model. We show how to match some features of the string spectrum with the Yang-Mills theory. The other class of theories are also connected to $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory and arise by making some of the transverse scalars compact. Their vacua are characterized by a 2D Yang-Mills theory or 3D Chern-Simons theory. These theories realize peculiar super-Poincar\'e symmetry algebras in $2+1$ or $1+1$ dimensions with ``noncentral'' charges. We finally discuss gravity duals of $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory on ${\mathrm{AdS}}_{3}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{S}^{1}$.

Abstract:In this short note, we study the infinite-dimensional symmetry algebras which appear in holomorphic twists of 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric quantum field theories. In particular, we investigate whether their representation theory helps us understand the semi-chiral ring of $\frac{1}{4}$-BPS operators. We focus on the supersymmetric analogue of $\phi^4$ theory. Upon twist, this becomes a 4d $\beta \gamma$ system deformed by a cubic superpotential. We compute the semi-chiral ring in this example and organize it into modules for the algebra generated by the stress tensor. We find an intricate module structure and falsify the hypothesis that this could be a 4d analogue of the 2d Ising Virasoro minimal model.

Abstract: Let $k$ be an algebraic closure of finite fields with odd characteristic $p$ and a smooth projective scheme $\mathbf{X}/W(k)$. Let $\mathbf{X}^0$ be its generic fiber and $X$ the closed fiber. For $\mathbf{X}^0$ a curve Faltings conjectured that semistable Higgs bundles of slope zero over $\mathbf{X}^0_{\mathbb{C}_p}$ correspond to genuine representations of the algebraic fundamental group of $\mathbf{X}^0_{\mathbb{C}_p}$ in his $p$-adic Simpson correspondence. This paper intends to study the conjecture in the characteristic $p$ setting. Among other results, we show that isomorphism classes of rank two semistable Higgs bundles with trivial chern classes over $X$ are associated to isomorphism classes of two dimensional genuine representations of $\mathbf{X}^0$ and the image of the association contains all irreducible crystalline representations. We introduce intermediate notions strongly semistable Higgs bundles and quasi-periodic Higgs bundles between semistable Higgs bundles and representations of algebraic fundamental groups. We show that quasi-periodic Higgs bundles give rise to genuine representations and strongly Higgs semistable are equivalent to quasi-periodic. We conjecture that a Higgs semistable bundle is indeed strongly Higgs semistable.
