Abstract:Here, a large class of finite N = 1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories of representations of SU( n ) is obtained. There are a few candidates which can accommodate three generations of fermions.

Abstract:During the last few years, a new approach to language processing has started to emerge, which has become known under various labels such as "data-oriented parsing", "corpus-based interpretation", and "tree-bank grammar" (cf. van den Berg et al. 1994; Bod 1992-96; Bod et al. 1996a/b; Bonnema 1996; Charniak 1996a/b; Goodman 1996; Kaplan 1996; Rajman 1995a/b; Scha 1990-92; Sekine & Grishman 1995; Sima'an et al. 1994; Sima'an 1995-96; Tugwell 1995). This approach, which we will call "data-oriented processing" or "DOP", embodies the assumption that human language perception and production works with representations of concrete past language experiences, rather than with abstract linguistic rules. The models that instantiate this approach therefore maintain large corpora of linguistic representations of previously occurring utterances. When processing a new input utterance, analyses of this utterance are constructed by combining fragments from the corpus; the occurrence-frequencies of the fragments are used to estimate which analysis is the most probable one. In this paper we give an in-depth discussion of a data-oriented processing model which employs a corpus of labelled phrase-structure trees. Then we review some other models that instantiate the DOP approach. Many of these models also employ labelled phrase-structure trees, but use different criteria for extracting fragments from the corpus or employ different disambiguation strategies (Bod 1996b; Charniak 1996a/b; Goodman 1996; Rajman 1995a/b; Sekine & Grishman 1995; Sima'an 1995-96); other models use richer formalisms for their corpus annotations (van den Berg et al. 1994; Bod et al., 1996a/b; Bonnema 1996; Kaplan 1996; Tugwell 1995).

Abstract:We examine one-flavour $SU(N_c)$ gauge theories, where $N_c$ denotes the number of colors, with one fermion in the antisymmetric representation as a candidate to approximate $\mathcal{N}=1$ super Yang Mills due to their equivalence in the large-$N_c$ limit. Summarising results on spectral evaluations of $N_c=3$, we will report on the progress of dynamical calculations for $N_c>3$. We discuss cut-off effects and challenges in configuration generation.

Abstract:We give a classification and overview of the confining N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories. For simplicity we consider only theories based on simple gauge groups and no tree-level superpotential. Classification of these theories can be done according to whether or not there is a superpotential generated for the confined degrees of freedom. The theories with the superpotential include s-confining theories and also theories where the gauge fields participate in the confining spectrum, while theories with no superpotential include theories with a quantum deformed moduli space and theories with an affine moduli space.
Fermions with $SU(1,n)$ Spacetime Symmetry

Abstract:We construct theories of free fermions in $(2n-1)$-dimensions with $SU(1,n)$ spacetime symmetry from the null reduction of fermions on a $2n$-dimensional $\Omega$-deformed Minkowski background for $n=2$ and $n=3$. These play a role in the 5d $SU(1,3)$-invariant theories that are conjectured to offer a full description of certain 6d superconformal field theories. We find the $(2n-1)$-dimensional manifestation of the supersymmetry of a free $2n$-dimensional boson-fermion system, which we use to fix the fermion two-point functions. It is then shown that the full $2n$-dimensional two-point function can be recovered through resummation. Limits of the theories are considered, and it is observed that both Galilean and Carrollian field theories appear in different regimes. We confirm that the correlation functions obey the $SU(1,n)$ Ward identities and the representations of the fermions under this group are discussed.

Abstract:For semisimple groups, possibly multiplied by U(1)'s, the number of Yang-Mills gauge fields is equal to the number of generators of the group. In this paper, it is shown that, for non-semisimple groups, the number of Yang-Mills fields can be larger. These additional Yang-Mills fields are not irrelevant because they appear in the gauge transformations of the original Yang-Mills fields. Such non-semisimple Yang-Mills theories may lead to physical consequences worth studying. The non-semisimple group with only two generators that do not commute is studied in detail.

Abstract:We present a non-geometric derivation of $\mathcal{N}$=1 Super Yang-Mills by focusing on the consistency of interactions that extend the free vector supermultiplet rather than assuming gauge invariance under extended symmetries. By utilizing a superspace first-order description, the theory is given in closed form as a third-order polynomial which includes a single cubic interaction term instead of an infinite series, thus eliminating the need for a special gauge. The geometrical interpretation of the theory emerges, as opposed to being presupposed.

We demonstrate that such systems exhibit familiar phenomena such as deformation of the vacuum moduli space, appearance of the dynamical superpotential, and Coulomb branches with $ \mathcal{N} $ = 1 Seiberg-Witten curves. The analysis requires a rather detailed knowledge of the chiral ring of the T N theory, which will also be discussed at length.

This connects N=1 and N=0 theories in which the target-spaces are interpreted as space-times, N=2 theories in which the target spaces can be interpreted as world-volumes, and theories with $N\ge 3$, in which the central charge vanishes -- theories with zero target-space dimensions.

Abstract:We investigate a large class of $\mathcal{N} = (2, 2)$ supersymmetric field theories in two dimensions, which contains the Murugan-Stanford-Witten model, and can be naturally regarded as a disordered generalization of the two-dimensional Landau-Ginzburg models. We analyze the two and four-point functions of chiral superfields, and extract from them the central charge, the operator spectrum, and the chaos exponent in these models. Some of the models exhibit a conformal manifold parameterized by the variances of the random couplings. We compute the Zamolodchikov metrics on the conformal manifold, and demonstrate that the chaos exponent varies nontrivally along the conformal manifolds. Finally, we introduce and perform some preliminary analysis of a disordered generalization of the gauged linear sigma models, and discuss the low energy theories as ensemble averages of Calabi-Yau sigma models over complex structure moduli space.

Chern-Simons-Trinion Theories: One-form Symmetries and Superconformal Indices

Abstract:We study 3d theories containing $\mathcal{N}=3$ Chern-Simons vector multiplets coupled to the $\mathrm{SU}(N)^3$ flavour symmetry of 3d $T_N$ theories with Chern-Simons level $k_1$, $k_2$ and $k_3$. It was formerly pointed out that these theories flow to infrared SCFTs with enhanced $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetry when $1/k_1+1/k_2+1/k_3=0$. We examine superconformal indices of these theories which reveal that supersymmetry of the infrared SCFTs may get enhanced to $4 \leq \mathcal{N} \leq 6$ if such a condition is satisfied. Moreover, even if the Chern-Simons levels do not obey the aforementioned condition, we find that there is still an infinite family of theories that flows to infrared SCFTs with $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetry. The 't Hooft anomalies of the one-form symmetries of these theories are analysed. As a by-product, we observe that there is generally a decoupled topological sector in the infrared. When the infrared SCFTs have $\mathcal{N} \geq 4$ supersymmetry, we also study the Higgs and Coulomb branch limits of the indices which provide geometric information of the moduli space of the theories in question in terms of the Hilbert series.

Abstract:In this paper we study an N=1 supersymmetric extension of a perturbatively super-renormalizable (nonlocal)theory of gravity in four dimensions. The nonlocal supergravity theory is power-counting super-renormalizable and tree level unitary with the same particle content of the local N=1 supergravity (as simple example, unitarity of the three dimensional N=1 and N=2 supergravity is proved). We believe that extended SO(N) supergravity, for N=4 or N=8, might be free from divergences also at one loop. The extended supergravities would then result finite at any order in the loop expansion.

Abstract:We explore the phases of N=1 supersymmetric U(N) gauge theories with fundamental matter that arise as deformations of N=2 SQCD by the addition of a superpotential for the adjoint chiral multiplet. As the parameters in the superpotential are varied, the vacua of this theory sweep out various branches, which in some cases have multiple semiclassical limits. In such limits, we recover the vacua of various product gauge group theories, with flavors charged under some group factors. We describe in detail the structure of the vacua in both classical and quantum regimes, and develop general techniques such as an addition and a multiplication map which relate vacua of different gauge theories. We also consider possible indices characterizing different branches and potential relationships with matrix models.

Abstract:We use recent results of Intriligator and Wecht [hep-th/0304128] to study the phase structure of $\NN=1$ super Yang-Mills theory with gauge group $SU(N_c)$, a chiral superfield in the adjoint, and $N_f$ chiral superfields in the fundamental representation of the gauge group. Our discussion sheds new light on [hep-th/0304128] and supports the conjecture that the central charge $a$ decreases under RG flows and is non-negative in unitary four dimensional conformal field theories.

Abstract:We prove that three-dimensional $N=1$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theory is finite to all loop orders. In general this leaves open the possibility that different regularization methods lead to different finite effective actions. We show that in this model dimensional regularization and regularization by dimensional reduction yield the same effective action. Consequently, the superfield approach preserves BRS invariance for this model.

Abstract:We show that the 𝒩 =1 supersymmetric SU( N ) gauge theory with 2 N flavors without superpotential has not only the standard Seiberg dual description but also another dual description involving two copies of the so-called T N theory. This is a natural generalization to N > 2 of a dual description of SU(2) gauge theory with 4 flavors found by Csaki, Schmaltz, Skiba and Terning. We also study dualities of other 𝒩 =1 SCFTs involving copies of T N theories. Our duality is the basic operation from which a recently-found web of 𝒩 =1 dualities obtained by compactifying M5-branes on Riemann surfaces can be derived field-theoretically.
Emergent Noninvertible Symmetries in Supersymmetric Yang-Mills Theory

Abstract:One of the simplest examples of noninvertible symmetries in higher dimensions appears in 4D Maxwell theory, where its SL(2,Z) duality group can be combined with gauging subgroups of its electric and magnetic 1-form symmetries to yield such defects at many different values of the coupling. Even though N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theory also has an SL(2,Z) duality group, it only seems to share two types of such noninvertible defects with Maxwell theory (known as duality and triality defects). Motivated by this apparent difference, we begin our investigation of the fate of these symmetries by studying the case of 4D N=4 U(1) gauge theory, which contains Maxwell theory in its content. Surprisingly, we find that the noninvertible defects of Maxwell theory give rise, when combined with the standard U(1) symmetry acting on the free fermions, to defects that act on local operators as elements of the U(1) outer automorphism of the N=4 superconformal algebra, an operation that was referred to in the past as the "bonus symmetry." Turning to the non-Abelian case of N=4 SYM theory, the bonus symmetry is not an exact symmetry of the theory, but is known to emerge at the supergravity limit. Based on this observation, we study this limit and show that, if it is taken in a certain way, noninvertible defects that realize different elements of the bonus symmetry emerge as approximate symmetries, in analogy to the Abelian case. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.132.201601 Published by the American Physical Society under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license.
