Abstract:The surface morphology of the end-face grinding workpiece is related to the processing quality. Current research focuses on the removal mechanism of the workpiece's surface material and gives some simulation methods to predict the workpiece's surface morphology. However, the surface shape obtained by these methods is primarily a concentrated circle distribution, which differs from the actual convex distribution. With the grinding wheel's concession, the research aims to make the height distribution of the simulation results close to the actual situation. The work takes the workpiece surface's axial vibration, radial rotations, and workpiece surface height distribution as the research objects. The work also develops measuring equipment for the grinding wheel's axial vibration and radial rotations and establishes the removing material model for the workpiece surface. As input quantities, the grinding wheel's axial vibrations and radial rotation go into the material removal model to obtain the topographic distribution characteristics of the workpiece surface. The measurement results show that the radial rotation angle range of the grinding wheel is approximately between −5 × 10 −4 rad and 5 × 10 −4 rad in the selected working conditions. The axial vibration range is approximately between −0.03 mm and 0.06 mm. The simulation results of workpiece surface topography agree with the experimental measurement results. Therefore, this simulation method is effective. The results also show that the grinding wheel's axial vibration and radial rotations can cause the convex phenomenon. With the axial vibration and radial rotations of the grinding wheel, the stronger the cutting ability of the grinding wheel, the more stable the vibration waveform is during the rotation of the grinding wheel, and the greater the amplitude of the axial vibration. This simulation method can simulate the process of end-face grinding, which positively improves the surface quality of end-face grinding processing.
