Abstract:Circulating fluidized bed combustion has proven to be an effective way of converting biomass wastes into clean energy. This paper introduces the experiment study on rice husk combustion in a circulating fluidized bed. Experiments on a cold model show that rice husk is difficult to be fluidized, and adding silicon sand and coal improves the fluidization condition. Effects of sand diameter, gas velocity and mass fraction on rice husk mixing were tested. The rice husk can mix well with 0.3–0.8 mm sand at gas velocity 0.8–2 m/s. Experiments on 1 MW thermal test facility show that rice husk ignition temperature is only 340 °C, much lower than coal. The gas velocity and air split have great effect on rice husk combustion. At proper operation condition, the rice husk combustion efficiency reaches 97%, and the carbon content in fly ash is between 3% and 8%, whereas CO emissions varies from 200 to 800 ppm, SO2 ranges from 50 to 100 ppm and NOx ranges from 150 to 220 ppm.

Abstract:The adverse effect of ultrafine particulate matter (PM) from the combustion of solid fuels calls for fundamental insights to guide effective control strategies. In this work, we investigated the ultrafine PM formation from burning several solid fuel samples, with special emphasis on the relationship with an emerging field of flame synthesis. Diluted fly ash was sampled and characterized in a bench-scale flat-flame burner at the early stage (similar to 40 ms) and in a 25 kW quasi-one-dimensional combustor at the burnout stage (similar to 1.5 s). Then, the population balance model framework was transplanted from the community of flame aerosol synthesis to simulate the particle size distributions (PSDs). From the experiments, unimodal submicron PSDs were revealed for the combustion of coal, rice husk, and sewage sludge under 40 ms of residence time and a postflame ambience of 1500 K and 20 vol % O-2. The compositional analysis reveals both the contributions from Na/K/P/S and from refractory species are important for ultrafine PM formation. This vaporization-nucleation mechanism highlights the similarity between solid fuel combustion and flame synthesis. However, the difference is raised by the medium and coarse mode PM that only appears in solid fuel combustion. The volatilized mineral and the ultrafine PM can be scavenged via coagulation, and the scavenged ratio takes similar to 10-60% of the total volatilized minerals for different coal samples. This ratio is inversely correlated with the volatilized minerals on a basis of ash input.
Study on combustion characteristics of rice husk-fired fluidized bed boiler

Abstract:The experimental results of ignition and burn out characteristics of rice husk in fluidized bed combustion test rig were reported and analyzed. Ignition experiment shows that rice husk can be ignited easily at the lowest temperature of 340 C. Rice husk may be ignited well when fed into fluidized bed at the bed temperature of 400 C, and its devolatilization is prompt, but burning out is difficult. Combustion test shows: the combustion intensity is concentrated in dilute phase zone, so the temperature here is higher than that in the density phase zone. In the experimental conditions, the combustion intensity in middle zone of the bed is strongest. Reasonable parameters are listed below: velocity 1 m/s -2 m/s, dimensions fluidization number 3-7 and air split 7:3. Although rice husk char burns out difficultly, the combustion efficiency is still 97% high. All these results are very useful to design and operate rice husk-fired fluidized bed boiler in engineering.
A New Process to Resource Rice Hull

Abstract:A new process to resource rice hull was proposed for minimizing the wastes and getting the maximum yield of saccharide. It included three steps, i.e., continuous steam explosion step, continuous near-critical water reactions step and combustion step. The influences of temperature and residence time on the yields of water soluble products and the contents of different components in the solid residue were studied. With the optimized conditions, about 80% of the carbon in the rice hull could be converted into aqueous phase products in which the yield of oligomers and monose could be over 40%(wt). From the analyses of different components in the solid residues, hemi-cellulose was decomposed mainly in the steam explosion step while cellulose was decomposed in the near-critical water reactions step.

Abstract:Power generation with biomass through direct combustion in fluidized bed boilers is an important bioenergy utilization technology,but bed agglomeration affects stable operation of the systems.Rice straw was burn in a fluidized bed at 760 ℃,using quartz sand as the bed,to study the bed agglomeration mechanism and biomass ash behavior.The experimental results show that severe bed agglomeration occurs with reduced fluidization with concentrated alkali on the bed particle surfaces and a 5 μm ash coating on the particle surfaces.Melting in the bed can be explained by the phase diagram of the K2O-CaO-SiO2 ternary system.The agglomeration occurs due to the low melting point of the straw ash which causes the surfaces of the burning char to become sticky at high temperatures,so the char bonds with the bed particles to form agglomerates.The melting ash homogeneously coats the bed particles through collisions between the bed particles and the fine ash and condensation of the melting alkali.When the coats are thick enough,adhesion forces cause the quartz particles to bond together at same points,which also results in agglomeration.

Abstract:Rice husk is a type of waste widely generated in Brazil and worldwide. It is often applied as biomass for energy generation. Rice husk ash (RHA), a solid waste generated in the combustion process for energy generation, is comprised primarily of silica and carbon. In this study, two types of RHAs, obtained by different industrial combustion processes (moving grate furnace and fluidized bed), were subjected to chemical or thermal treatments in different atmospheric flows (Ar/H 2 , N 2 , O 2 gases, compressed air, and vacuum). The particle size, specific weight, surface area, electrical properties, crystalline structure, and chemical composition were analyzed by different characterization techniques. The results indicated that thermal treatments generate powders with a high silica content; amorphous structures were found in some silica materials (those obtained by chemical treatment and thermal treatments in Ar/H 2 flow, compressed air, and vacuum), and others were crystalline in the cristobalite phase (mainly samples treated in the O 2 and N 2 atmospheric flows). The yield of each process varied, obtaining silica concentrations above 99.3%. Samples with significant analytical carbon content showed higher values of electrical conductivity; this result is probably due to the incorporation of carbon atoms into the cristobalite lattice. Samples treated with O 2 atmospheric flows showed resistivity values of 10 08 Ω.cm with very low carbon levels. This work concluded that carbonaceous silica materials (which may be new materials in the Si-C-O system) may be obtained during the thermal treatments of rice husk ash.

Abstract:The overall valorization of rice husk char obtained by flash pyrolysis in a conical spouted bed reactor (CSBR) has been studied in a two-step process. Thus, silica has been recovered in a first step and the remaining carbon material has been subjected to steam activation. The char samples used in this study have been obtained by continuous flash pyrolysis in a conical spouted bed reactor at 500°C. Extraction with Na2CO3 allows recovering 88% of the silica contained in the rice husk char. Activation of the silica-free rice husk char has been carried out in a fixed bed reactor at 800°C using steam as activating agent. The porous structure of the activated carbons produced includes a combination of micropores and mesopores, with a BET surface area of up to 1365m(2)g(-1) at the end of 15min.

Abstract:This paper investigated the ash deposit characteristics during the co-firing Da Tong (DA) coal with different proportions of rice hull (0%, 5%, 10%, and 20%, based on weight) in a pilot-scale furnace. The growth of ash deposit with a four-stage mode was presented. The stable thickness values of DA coal, 5% rice hull, 10% rice hull, and 20% rice hull were 0.5, 1.4, 2.9, 5.7 cm, with stable heat flux values of 230, 200, 175, and 125 kW/m(2), respectively. According to the results of scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDX), the amount of Si in the deposits increased with the increasing proportion of rice hull rich in SiO2. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis results indicated that most elements except Si were in the amorphous state because of the formation of eutectics. The stable thicknesses of deposits increased exponentially with the proportion of rice hull. The deposit was loose, easy removable but it reduced the heat transfer significantly. Consequently, sootblowing timely was necessary when co-firing DA coal with rice hull. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A novel fluidized-bed gasifier was designed in which rice husk was fluidized and gasified without inert additives. The gas compositions of CO, CO2, H-2, CH4, and O-2 were determined by an online analyzer and gas chromatography. The results showed that low fluidized velocity and low gasification temperature (550-650 degreesC) were beneficial to the production of syngas with a high composition of CO. The composition of H-2 was influenced slightly by the equivalent ratio. The average composition of H-2 was almost unchangeable to different fluidized velocities. The minimal fluidized velocity v(mf) of rice husk without inert additives experimentally determined was 0.495 m/s, which was higher than that of the two-component system containing rice husk and sand (v(mf) < 0.3 m/s). The throughput of rice husk in this reactor was higher than that in a fixed bed with the same volume. This fluidized-bed reactor had a longer service term than a traditional fluidized bed for a two-component system.

Abstract:The fluidization and transportation properties of rice husk have been studied on a cold model bed of inner diameter 120 mm. The ignition and combustion characteristics of rice husk mixed with coal have also been studied in a 1 MW experimental circulating fluidized bed (CFB) system. The conclusions, drawn on the basis of these experiments, are found to be very useful for the design of a 35 tons per hour CFB boiler firing this biomass fuel.

Abstract:The particle dispersion mechanisms of rice husk in a fuel-rich/lean burner with an impact-type concentrator were investigated by both digital imaging technique and sampling method. In the experiments, a model burner with a scale ratio of 1/2.708 was studied employing an optical measurement system which consisted of a charge-coupled device (abbreviated as CCD) camera and a laser sheet for illumination. Effects of different impact block heights and inflow particle concentrations on the distribution of rice husk were studied. The distribution of husk particles was obtained by measuring local particle appearance frequency ratio (abbreviated as AFR) within the field of view. Then the size distributions and mass ratios of particles collected from the solid-rich and solid-lean sides were obtained by sampling methods. Increasing the impact block height resulted in a great increase of the rich/lean ratio of particle appearance frequency (abbreviated as RL) at the exit of the burner, as the ratio of 1.66, 5.21 and 9.55 for the block height of 40 mm, 50 mm and 60 mm. Similar tendency was observed when increasing the inflow particle concentration (9.55, 10.57 and 11.87 for 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3 kg/kg). Abstract:In this paper, silica white, which is obtained from rice husk in a fluidized bed, is investigated. First, the experiments are carried out in the cold fluidized bed of 90-mm interior diameter (I.D.). The experimental results show that the ash mixed with a little rice husk can be fluidized when Ug is within the range of 0.18–0.316 m/s. Then, the experiments of combustion of rice husk are investigated in the fluidized bed of 84 mm I.D. The experimental results show that the combustion occurs in the dense zone of the fluidized bed. The ash in the dense zone is easily purified to obtain the SiO2 powder. The quality of silica white sampled from the dense phase zone is higher than that of GB-precipitated silica and approaches that of pyrogenic silica except for specific surface area and iron content.

Abstract:Energy &Environment, Ahead of Print. Rice husk is an abundant agricultural biomass and a potential source of amorphous silica and porous silicon. To produce high-purity SiO2 and Si from rice husks, multiple steps of acid leaching to remove impurities and heat treatment to reduce residual carbon are necessary. In this study, a simple mechanochemical (magnesio-milling) experiment was conducted using an attrition mill to convert rice husk ash (RHA) and gasifier-derived rice husk ash (GRHA) into porous Si under various acid leaching (hydrochloric acid and lactic acid) and heat-treatment conditions. Three noteworthy results were obtained. First, eco-friendly lactic acid can be used instead of the harmful acid (hydrochloric acid). Next, the heat-treated GRHA was converted to Si via magnesio-milling without acid leaching. Finally, the carbon content (<0.3 wt%) of RHA and GRHA is a key factor affecting the conversion of SiO2 into Si based on elemental analysis. The purities of the Si samples prepared from RHA and GRHA, analyzed using inductively coupled plasma (ICP) mass spectrometry, were 97.66% and 95.62%, respectively. Furthermore, the porous Si prepared using RHA and GRHA can be utilized as a high value-add material such as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries and nanostructured materials.

Abstract:Recovering silica from rice husks by calcination is an economical and attractive method of manufacturing high value-added products. The pretreatment process plays an important role in the preparation of amorphous silica by influencing both the removal of metallic impurities and further decomposition of organic compounds. In this paper, the pyrolysis kinetics of various pretreatment processes, including water soaking, acid leaching and grinding, were investigated using thermogravimetric analysis. The contributions of various pretreatment to the production of silica can be listed as follows: acid leaching > water soaking > grinding. Acid leaching at 120 °C with an acid concentration of 8 mass% and grinding raw material into 100 mesh was most beneficial to the removal of metallic impurities and thermal decomposition of organic compounds. The Flynn–Wall–Ozawa method was employed to derive the kinetic parameters (activation energy and correlation coefficient). The activation energies were calculated to be in the range of 90–156 kJ mol −1 for rice husks with various pretreatments at different conversion fractions. These results provide useful information for the rational design and scaling up of pretreatment reactors.
Ash Aerosol Formation from Oxy-Coal Combustion and Its Relation to Ash Deposit Chemistry

Abstract:Ash aerosol and ash deposit formation during oxy-coal combustion were explored through experiments in a self-sustained 100kW rated down-fired oxy-fuel combustor. Inlet oxidant conditions consisted of 50% inlet oxygen with CO2 (hereafter denoted as OXY50 conditions). A Berner low pressure impactor (BLPI), a scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS), and an aerodynamic particle sizer (APS) were used to obtain size segregated ash aerosol samples and to determine the particle size distributions (PSD). A novel surface temperature controlled ash deposition probe system that allowed inside and outside deposits to be separated was used to collect the ash deposits. The ash aerosol PSDs given by the BLPI and those produced by SMPS/APS were consistent with each other. Data suggested that oxy-coal combustion under these conditions did not change the formation mechanisms controlling the bulk ash aerosol composition, but it did increase the formation of ultra-fine particles initially formed through metal vaporization, due to increased vaporization of silicon at the higher combustion temperature. The smaller particles contained within the deposits had higher Si and lower Na and S concentrations under OXY50 conditions than for air combustion. Moreover, the ash aerosol composition for particle sizes less than 2.4μm was related to the composition of the inside deposits. A higher Na in the ash aerosol resulted in higher Na in inside deposits with comparable absolute Na concentrations in both those aerosol particles and those inside deposits particles. The contribution of S and Si to the inside deposits showed that S in the vaporization modes together with Si in the ultrafine vaporization mode, contributed significantly to the composition of the inside deposits. These results provided direct evidence that prediction of the chemistry of the initial deposit layer (but not of the bulk deposits) required knowledge of the size segregated chemistry of the ash aerosol.

Abstract:As a CO2-neutral renewable energy, biomass combustion is encouraged to reduce global-warming gas emissions in China. The severe fouling and slagging problem because of high alkali and alkaline earth metal contents still limit the applications of self-sustained biomass power plants. It is essential to study the dynamic behavior of ash deposition in pure biomass combustion. In this paper, three kinds of biomass, saw dust, wheat straw, and corn stover, were burned in a 25 kW one-dimensional down-fired furnace. Three different sampling probe temperatures (550, 600, and 650 degrees C) and four different sampling time periods were chosen, while the deposited ash mass, collection efficiency, deposition morphology, and deposit composition were studied. The results indicate that the deposition mass, collection efficiency, and deposition area all achieve a minimum at an intermediate temperature of 600 degrees C. Highly reactive potassium plays an important role in the ash deposition process, causing a higher deposition rate of wheat straw than corn stover. The results under different sampling time periods indicate that the depositing rate exhibits a trend of a "fast slow fast slow" process. Finally, the governing mechanisms are speculated on the basis of the experimental data, such as deposit morphology and elemental composition.

Abstract:The ash melting temperature of coal ash has an important effect during the fluidized bed combustion and gasification process, which affects the slagging and deposition characteristics of the boiler. Experiments on the effects of chemical components on the ash fusion behaviors have been completed on the ash fusion temperatures (AFTs) analyzer under typical gasification and combustion atmospheres. Meanwhile, calculations on the variation of minerals in ash with ash composition were conducted using the FactSage software. The results indicated that the AFTs under gasification were a little higher than those under the combustion atmosphere. On increasing the Fe2O3, CaO, and Na2O contents under the combustion and gasification atmospheres, the four temperatures deformation temperature (DT), softening temperature (ST), hemispherical temperature (HT), and flow temperature (FT) decreased dramatically and the generation and transformation of minerals occurred. The iron-containing minerals, such as hercynite and fayalite, formed with increase in the content of Fe2O3; the Ca-bearing feldspar minerals, like gehlenite and anorthite, started appearing on increasing the CaO content, and the Na-containing feldspar minerals, like carnegieite, were detected as the Na2O was increased. These three minerals can form low-temperature eutectics, decreasing the fusion temperature.

Abstract:Recently the firing of biomass at existing power plant has drawn much attention because biomass fuels result in less pollutant emission. It is desirable to investigate the flow characteristics of biomass particles in existing combustors in order to determine whether the coal burners also have good adaptability for biomass fuel. The particle dispersion in the burner has a close relationship with pollutant emissions. In this paper, a monitoring system based on a charge-coupled device (abbreviated as CCD) camera was employed to measure the particle distribution of rice husk in a fuel-rich/lean burner. The influence of air velocity was taken into consideration. The particle-rich/lean ratio is 19.49, 16.23, 14.86, and 12.94 (corresponding to the air velocity of 9.5, 11, 12.5, and 14 m/s, respectively) at the exit of the burner model. The results indicates that the air velocity has a negative effect on the separation performance. In order to verify the particle distributions obtained by the digital imaging technique, specially designed filter bags were used to collect rice husk from both the fuel-rich side and fuel-lean side. Then mass and size distributions of the collected particles were analyzed. The results agrees with the trend above and indicates that the block type concentrator has greater impacts on large particles. More large particles were collected from the fuel-rich side. The dispersion mechanism of rice husk particles revealed in this paper can propose solutions to the actual operation of plants that combust/co-combust the rice husk. (CSPE)

Abstract:While co-firing Si-rich biomass showed the potential for mitigating ash-related issues in low-rank coal combustion, the underlying mechanisms need further investigation. This work aims to examine the impacts of co-firing rice husk and its torrefied product with a high-Na/Ca/Cl low-rank coal on PM10 (particle size below 10 μm) emission and elemental partitioning. Combustion tests were performed on a drop tube furnace (DTF) at 1300 °C. The bulk ashes and PM10 were collected by fiberglass filters and Dekati low pressure impactor respectively. The ash samples were carefully characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope equipped with energy dispersive spectrometer (SEM-EDS), ion chromatography (IC) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). It is found that co-firing raw or torrefied rice husk reduces emissions of PM1 (particle size below 1 μm) together with the Na and Cl in it, mainly due to the capture of Na by coarse Si-rich particles from rice husk. The emissions of PM1-10 (particle size between 1 and 10 μm) are elevated after co-firing. This is because the formation of Ca-silicates is facilitated instead of K-silicates, thus weaken the agglomeration between the coarse particulates with melting surface from rice husk. Compared to raw rice husk, its torrefied product leads to a lower reduction ratio regarding PM1 from co-firing. Combined the results in this and previous investigations, for raw/torrefied rice husk and Xinjiang low-rank coals, the PM1 yields from both of the individual fuels and the blends almost linearly correlated with the mole ratio of (Na + K + Cl + 2S)/(Si + Al) in the ash.

Abstract:The fluidized bed technology has advantges at thermal conversion of biomass, though agglomeration of bed particles is a main technical problem during operation of biomass fluidized bed boiler. Wheat straw was burning in a fludized bed experimental device, and severe bed aggelomeration emerged with deterioratied fludization state. As the combustion continued, bed particles caught more and more potassium. Analysis shows that the composition of melt agglomerate can be simplified by the ternary system K2O-CaO-SiO2, and the melting behavior can be explained by the phase diagram. Because of low melting point of straw ash, surfaces of burning char become sticky at high temperatures, and the char bonds with bed particles forming agglomerates. Melting ash coats homogeneously bed particles through collisions between bed particles and fine ash. When the coats are thick enough, adhesive force makes bed particles bond together on limited points.
