Abstract:The blockage of Shell coal gasifier caused by slag deposition is a challenging problem.Influence of operation loads, nozzle numbers on the gas flow field and circumferential distribution of slag deposited on the slag bath screen was investigated by cold mode experiments.Molten wax was used as the modeling slag.Results showed that when operated with 4 nozzles, gas flow rotated downwards and left the slag bath in the center, and the distribution of slag was uniform.When operated with 3 nozzles, rotational flow approached to the position near the closed nozzle, and left the slag bath from the opposite side.Slag tended to deposit at the rear of the rotational flow.At the position where axial gas velocity was the biggest, the amount of slag deposited was the least.The reason was that axial gas flow caused the redistribution of slag in the slag tap.Meanwhile, it formed an isolation layer near the slag bath screen which prevented the slag from depositing on it.This will lead to the accumulation of slag in a certain place and increase the risk of slag blockage.
Modeling slag behavior in membrane wall gasifier

Abstract:A slag flow model was developed for the membrane wall gasifier by coupling the 3D gasifier model, the one-dimensional slag model and the particle trap model. The influence of particle behavior and O/C (ratio of oxygen to coal) on slagging of gasifier was demonstrated. Differences between membrane wall gasifier and refractory wall gasifier were shown. The larger particle benefited the capture efficiency and formation of slag layer, while the smaller one favored high carbon conversion. The thermal resistance of solid slag layer accounted for a large proportion in the membrane wall gasifier, thus it could protect silicon carbide layer and membrane wall from thermal corrosion.

Abstract:<p>In pulverized-coal gasifiers, wall slagging behavior is an important issue associated with ash handling and discharge. Numerical methods have been widely employed to predict the slag flow and heat transfer on the gasifier wall. However, most of the analytical models are only one-way coupled with the simulation of the gasification reactor. In the present study, the slag model was integrated into a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) solver to achieve two-way coupling. The coupled mass, momentum and energy equations were solved iteratively until convergence. The simulations of a simplified gasifier show that the solid slag thickness was seriously affected by the heat flux from gas to slag surface. The proposed two-way coupled slag model was able to give more reasonable predictions compared with other offline slag models since the heat transfer between the gas and the slag could be modeled more accurately. Through analyzing the energy balance in the slag layer, it is found that most of the heat flux from gas was extracted by the cooling water. However, the effect of the heat flux absorbed by the flowing liquid slag became important under high gas temperatures and ash deposition rates.</p>

Abstract:A dynamic gasifier model including slag flow behavior simulation was established to simulate a new type of oxygen-staged gasifier recently developed in China. A reactor network model (RNM) is used to simulate the internal gas-solid reaction zone of the gasifier, in which the reactor is divided into several zones based on the understanding of the flow characteristics in the gasifier, with each zone represented by either a plug-flow reactor or a well-stirred reactor. This space division concept can provide a more reasonable temperature distribution prediction than one-dimensional models, without costing too much computational expense. In addition, a widely accepted slag layer model is used to simulate the time-varying slag accumulation and flow on the wall and the heat transfer process through the wall. Using the developed model, two kinds of oxygen-staged gasifiers were simulated: the refractory wall gasifier and the membrane wall gasifier. The RNM predictions were compared with industrial data and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model results, and good agreement has been observed. The temperature distribution simulation results also showed that staged oxygen feeding can reduce the temperature near the main burner significantly, therefore extending the lifetime of the burner compared with that of without staged oxygen feed. Dynamic simulation results suggest that the dynamic response of the refractory wall gasifier is much slower than that of the membrane wall gasifier. In the membrane wall gasifier, the dynamic response of the syngas temperature and composition is rather fast compared to that of the wall temperature. However, for the refractory wall gasifier, the dynamic response of syngas temperature is as slow as that of the wall temperature indicating that different control strategies should be taken into account for better slag flow and syngas temperature control for these two kinds of gasifier.

Abstract:The sturdy of slag flow behavior and its control method is of significance for the development of membrane wall entrained flow gasification technology. This paper established a dynamic gasifier model for an oxygen-staged membrane wall gasifier, using reactor network modeling concept. The model can not only predict gasifier outlet parameters, but also provide a reasonable temperature distribution inside the gasifier, which benefits the slag flow calculation. After analyzing the dynamic characteristics of the gasifier using the model, we proposed a preliminary control strategy for temperature and slag thickness control, and carried out some control simulations under coal property disturbances. The results showed that the control system could adjust the top and bottom slag thickness to reasonable values when they exceeded safe ranges. The manipulation of secondary oxygen ratio could enhance the control ability on the top slag thickness control.

Abstract:A steady state model for coal gasification process in a slurry-feed-type entrained-flow gasifier is developed with partitioning zone approach. The gasification process is conceptually divided into two zones: combustion zone where oxygen is existent and gasification zone where oxygen is not existent. The combustion zone is treated as a black box where the process of coal pyrolysis and the oxygenous reaction are completely finished. The gasification zone is partitioned into compartment-in-series along the reactor height and lumped parameter is assumed in each compartment. The model is respectively developed for combustion zone and gasification zone by means of element mass balance, matter mass balance and energy balance. For testing the validity of model, a comparison between the computed results based on the model and the practical data published in literature has been made and the results show the model is effective.

Abstract:A comprehensive three-dimensional (3D) numerical model is developed for simulation of entrained Coal Slurry gasifiers. In this model, a presumed probability density function (PDF) method is used to consider turbulent effects oil gas-phase reactions in the gasifier. A realizable k-epsilon model is adopted to predict turbulence information. Coal slurry particles are tracked with the Lagrangian Method. The coal Slurry gasification process is divided into several Simple Subprocesses, which are droplet evaporation, boiling, devolatilization, and heterogeneous reactions of coal char particles. The particle-source-in-cell method is adopted to couple gas-particle interactions. With this methodology, simulations For GE and staged coal Slurry gasifiers are completed, A comparison between the predictions and measured data shows that the proposed model correctly predicts the global performance of the coal gasification process. The mixing process in the staged gasifier is better than that in the GE gasifier because of the existence of secondary flow. The particle size has a negative effect oil coal conversion. The effects of the coal slurry concentration c and molar ratio of oxygen/carbon oil the gasifier performance are also Studied in this paper.

Abstract:Fluidized beds are widely used as energy-intensive chemical reactors for biomass gasification, involving high particle concentration, complex gas-particle/particle-particle interactions, intricate chemical reactions, and significant heat and mass transfer [1].However, due to the harsh operating conditions of fluidized bed gasifiers, the physical and thermochemical characteristics of dense gas-solid reactive flow inside the reactor remain poorly understood.To address this issue, we have developed a multi-scale numerical strategy that integrates the computational fluid dynamics-discrete element method (CFD-DEM), coarse-grained method (CGM), and multiphase particle-in-cell (MP-PIC) with complex thermochemical sub-models [2][3][4].The integrated models were validated using experimental data, demonstrating their reasonable accuracy.The CFD-DEM model enables the high-fidelity simulation of lab-scale bubbling fluidized bed gasifiers, providing detailed information on particle residence time, heat transfer contribution, carbon conversion ratio, and other crucial parameters.In contrast, the CGM and MP-PIC models facilitate the high-efficiency simulation of pilot-scale and industrialscale circulating fluidized bed gasifiers, offering in-depth insights into vital in-furnace phenomena such as cluster evolution, size-/density-induced segregation, gas pollutant formation, and so on.Our multi-scale simulation approach is expected to provide valuable information for optimizing the design and process of biomass gasification in fluidized beds and promoting the efficient utilization of renewable energy resources.

Abstract:Co-gasification of indirect coal liquefaction residues (ICLR) and coal is an effective way to achieve harmless and sustainable treatment of hazardous wastes. The long-term and stable operation of a co-gasification largely depends on the flow behavior of coal-ash slag. Herein, classical molecular dynamics simulation (MD) and Raman spectroscopy were used to study the microstructure of slag and its relationship with viscosity during the co-gasification of ICLR and coal. The results showed that with the addition of ICLR, the viscosity of slag decreased continuously. This reduction in viscosity was attributed to the increase of FeO content in the system with the addition of ICLR. As a network modifier, FeO could easily provide O2− at high temperatures, thereby destroying bridge oxygen and converting more tricluster oxygen and bridge oxygen into non-bridge oxygen. This significantly reduced the structure complexity and polymerization degree of slag, thereby reducing its viscosity. Finally, the correlation between the microstructural and viscosity was further analyzed. It was found that there was a quadratic function relationship between Q4 proportion and viscosity, and the formula was μ = 0.025(Q4)2-Q4 + 12.03. The purpose of this work was to provide theoretical support for slag flow mechanisms during the gasifier slagging-tapping process and the resource treatment of hazardous wastes.

Abstract:The viscosity of molten slags is one of the most significant parameters to predict the flow properties of ash in coal gasification process. To estimate the viscosity of molten slags, a model based on the structure of slags was established. NBO/T (number of non-bridging oxygen/tetragonally-bonded oxygen) and P/M (polymer/modifier), as the structural parameters of slags, provide description of the polymerization and bond strengths of molten slags, respectively. The model presented the dependency on both temperature and structural parameters with the viscosity in the SiO2-Al2O3-CaO-MgO-Fe2O3-K2O-Na2O-TiO2 slag systems. The accuracy of the model was verified by the experimental data of literatures. The results indicate that the viscosity decreases with the increase of NBO/T due to the reduction of polymerization in the molten slags, whereas the viscosity rises with the increase of P/M because of the strength weaken of molten slags. A good agreement is obtained from the calculated and measured values of the viscosity within a certain range. The deviation between the prediction and experiment results is within 10% when NBO/T < 0.5 and 25% when NBO/T > 0.5.

Abstract:Coal gasification slag is a kind of solid waste that exhibits suboptimal resource utilization and contributes to environmental pollution. Flotation is a common method of sorting coal gasification fine slag. However, the adverse influence of the well-developed pores structure of residual carbon on wettability and flotation efficiency is not adequately addressed in the literature. In this research, the adsorption characteristics of water molecules in the residual carbon model with different pore structures were investigated by Grand Canonical Monte Carlo simulation. We employed molecular dynamics simulations and mathematical models to investigate the mechanism of pore water movement. Additionally, the influence of pore structure on the flotation effect of coal gasification fine slag was explored for molecular dynamics simulations and flotation experiments. The results indicated that water molecules were adsorbed and aggregated in the residual carbon pores in the form of clusters. The cluster size decreased as the porosity decreased. Moreover, the same pore model showed an equivalent adsorption of water molecules. The binding effect of residual carbon on water molecules was stronger for smaller pore sizes. However, the simulation and experimental findings demonstrated that the more developed the pore structure of coal gasification fine slag, the lower its flotation efficiency. Finally, various methods of strengthening the flotation of coal gasification fine slag are theoretically verified. The findings of this research elucidate the underlying microscopic mechanism responsible for the adsorption of water molecules by residual carbon pores. Moreover, we explicate the principle of weakening the pore wetting effect and lay a theoretical foundation for developing advanced flotation techniques for coal gasification fine slag. It provides some theoretical guidance and technical support for realizing high-value utilization of coal gasification slag with specific environmental and resource benefits.

A Novel Structural Viscosity Model for Coal Slag Melts

Abstract:Slag viscosity is one of the most important parameters for the operation of an entrained-flow gasifier. Complementary to established empirical viscosity models, this paper presents a structure-based viscosity model considering individual structure effects of major components. Based on the degree of polymerization and bond energy, a structural parameter RS, which reflects the network stability of melts, is calculated using a molecular dynamics simulation and correlated with the viscosity. The model coefficients are developed according to the viscosities of 54 published samples. A comparison is made with two commonly used viscosity models, the Urbain model and the modified Urbain model. The results indicate that the new model offers better predictions. Furthermore, 32 experimental samples used to verify the new model. This model also reveals that the network stability (RS) can be regarded as a direct structural parameter for quantitative correlations with slag properties.

Abstract:The research object in this paper is an industrial HTL gasifier in a plant. A three-dimensional model is built. The chemical percolation devolatilization (CPD) model is used to calculate the pyrolysis reaction. Considering the gas diffusion in the inner pores of the particle and the evolution of pore structure, the random pore model (RPM) was used to simulate the chemical reaction on the particle surface, and the gasification reaction kinetic parameter of char was measured by high-pressure thermogravimetry analysis. The slag model was constructed to describe the formation process and distribution of slag. Through the coupling of the above models, a simulation method that combines several submodels for the entrained flow gasifier is built, and the results from simulation are in good agreement with the industrial data. Furthermore, the effect of the uniformity of pulverized coal injection was analyzed by this method. The simulation results reflect that the asymmetric feed of coal will affect gas-solid mixing and reduce carbon conversion, and it leads to a higher local wall temperature and a lower ratio of crude slag to fine slag.

Abstract:In the heat recovery technology of molten slag granulation, gas quenching is one of the most promising and crucial technologies for high-quality resource utilization. This study performed numerical investigations on the slag granulation process through the realizable k -epsilon model and volume of fluid methodology and gained deep insight into the breakup mechanism and influence of the gas Weber number (We) and liquid Reynolds number (Re). Results indicated that the shear action between gas and slag leads to the generation of the KH (Kelvin–Helmholtz) wave, which dominates the surface liquid film fragmentation. The pressure gradient between the gas and slag interfaces leads to the generation of RT (Rayleigh–Taylor) waves and, finally, to the liquid film fragmentation of spherical pores. The crushing effect of slag is mainly determined by the We, Re, and local momentum ratio between gas and slag ( R LM ). The variation of the dimensionless number has a significant effect on the fragmentation effect of the slag. When the We ranges from 621 to 932 and the Re from 336 to 605, an increase in the dimensionless number reduces the surface wavelength and the mean particle size of the slag. The surface wavelength decreases from about 12 to about 5 mm, and the mean particle size of the slag decreases from about 2.65 to 2.3 mm. The length and height of the break also decrease with increasing We and Re. Finally, an empirical formula for the size of the slag particle is obtained. According to the empirical formula, the particle size of the slag decreases with increasing airflow velocity and slag flow rate, and increases with increasing slag surface tension and viscosity.

Abstract:<p>A three-dimensional computational model, coupled with the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) model and Volume of Fluid (VOF) multiphase model, was established to investigate the two-phase flow and slag entrainment during steel bloom continuous casting. The influence of the in-mold electromagnetic stirring (M-EMS), casting speed, and submerged entry nozzle (SEN) immersion depth on the flow pattern and slag entrainment were evaluated. The number, size, velocity, and spatial distribution of slag droplets were counted and the location, velocity and probability of the slag entrainment on the meniscus were exported in real time through a user defined function. The result shows that the slag entrainment mainly occurred around the 1/4 width of the mold. The equivalent diameter of most slag droplets was 2–6 mm under the current casting condition. A formula for the equivalent diameter distribution of slag droplets was proposed according to the statistical result.</p>

Abstract:A novel computational‐fluid‐dynamics‐based model is proposed to simulate freeze‐lining (FL) formation in a slag fuming furnace, coupling multiphase fluid dynamics with slag solidification. The model captures FL formation in both the slag bath and freeboard due to slag splashing. Herein, good agreement with industrial data is demonstrated, providing valuable insights into the fuming process dynamics and heat transfer. Slag fuming (SF) is a metallurgical process designed to recycle Zn‐containing slags derived from various industrial residues. To protect the reactor from corrosive molten slag, a deliberate as‐solidified slag layer, known as a freeze lining (FL), is formed on the reactor walls using intense water‐cooled jackets. In this article, a computational‐fluid‐dynamics‐based model capable of simulating FL formation in a SF furnace is presented. To capture the complex multiphase flow dynamics, heat transfer, and FL formation during SF, a volume‐of‐fluid model is coupled with a mixture continuum solidification model. Three phases are considered: gas, liquid bulk slag, and solid slag (FL). Moreover, two types of FL are distinguished: one that solidifies on the reactor wall in the bulk slag region and another that solidifies on the reactor wall in the freeboard region owing to slag splashing. Comparisons between calculated FL thickness and heat fluxes and corresponding industrial data demonstrate satisfactory agreement. In this outcome, the robustness of the model is underscored and confidence in its accuracy is instilled. In the simulation results, valuable insights are provided into the evolution of the fuming process, particularly regarding the slag bath temperature, slag splashing dynamics, FL formation, local heat fluxes through the reactor wall, and global net energy balance.

Numerical simulation of GSP gasifier based on double-mixture fractions PDF model

Abstract:A comprehensive three dimensional numerical model has been developed for the GSP gasifier. Based on the assumption of chemical equilibrium, two mixture fractions,ffuel and psec, are used to describe the thermochemistry of the gasifier. Probability density function (PDF) is used to describe the coupling of turbulence-chemistry. Stochastic tracking technique is selected to describe the interaction of turbulence and particle motion. The predictions are in good agreement with experimental data and literature, proving the reliability of the model. The flow field of GSP gasifier can be divided into four regions: swirling jet region, internal recirculation region, external recirculation region and plug flow region. Oxidation reactions are mainly conducted in swirling jet region and internal recirculation region. Gasification reactions dominate the other regions. The high temperature flame impinge directly on the chamber wall of the 1/3 height of the gasifier, so more consideration should be taken on the protection of the refractory at that position.

Abstract:A computational particle fluid dynamics simulation model for entrained-flow gasification was established in this study. The simulation results agree with the experimental data. The detailed particle information and residence-time distribution were obtained by injecting particle tracers in the simulation. The results show that the particles in the gasifier can be classified into three flowing zones, i.e. a fast-flowing zone, a recirculation zone and a spreading zone. The criterion for this classification was also provided. The rapid gas expansion caused by the fast reactions plays a significant role in forming the particle stream into these three zones. It accelerates the particles in the centre of the gasifier while pushing the particles near the expansion edge into the gas recirculation. Also, the concentrated oxygen distribution in the gasifier results in the formation of high- and low-temperature regions. The particles in the fast-flowing zone flow directly through the high-temperature region and most of these particles in this zone were fully reacted with a short residence time. Since particles in the recirculation zone are in a relatively low-temperature region, most of these particles are not fully gasified, although with a long residence time. The rest of particles in the spreading zone show moderate properties between the above two zones.

Abstract:The heat of arc plasma is the primary energy source of the electric arc furnace (EAF) for high-titania slag smelting. A unified model of fluid flow, heat transfer, and arc-slag interaction is developed by taking magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations into account. The model is first validated by comparing the calculated results with the previous experimental data. The dynamic variations of the concavity of the molten pool surface are tracked by using the volume of fluid (VOF) model to investigate the interaction between the arc and the molten pool. Moreover, the model is applied to investigate the influence of slag viscosity and arc length on the flow behavior of the interface and the arc plasma characteristics. Based on the simulation results, the low viscosity and short arc length result in deeper and narrower concavity of the interface, which may lead to the splashing of molten slag and influence the stability of the arc. For cost savings and efficiency improvement, the position of electrodes and the temperature distribution in the EAF ought to be monitored and controlled to maintain proper arc length and viscosity during the production process.
Application of Particle Population Model To Determine the Contribution to Slag, Flyash, and Syngas in Entrained Flow Gasification from Particle Size Distribution

Abstract:During entrained coal gasification any inefficiency in the slagging process leads to overall process inefficiencies and fouling of downstream equipment. A coal particle population model was developed to evaluate the conversion and partitioning of diverse heterogeneous coal particles into slag and flyash. A Pittsburgh No. 8 coal sample was separated into four gravity fractions by float–sink separation. Each density cut was further separated into seven size fractions. These fractions were individually characterized to evaluate the resulting conversion and partitioning into slag and flyash. The sticking probability varied among the four specific gravity fractions as a function of temperature while little or negligible variance among the size fractions was observed for conventional viscosity models. However, this was not the case, when using the contact angle to account for the influence of carbon. By expressing the contact angle as a function of carbon content and the temperature of critical viscosity, the behavior of reacting coal particles striking the gasifier wall could be evaluated. Capture efficiencies were predicted to be higher for particles from smaller size and lower specific gravity fractions. A sensitivity analysis indicated that decreasing the amount of the larger size fractions reduces the formation of flyash since it increases mineral capture in slag, with a slight increase in syngas production due to the larger carbon conversion in smaller size fractions versus larger size fractions.
