Abstract:The heat and mass transfer properties of a new type of a consolidated composite activated carbon adsorbent based on the host matrix of expanded natural graphite treated with sulfuric acid were simulated, and the simulation results of 20 samples (19 composite activated carbon samples with different densities and different proportions of activated carbon and 1 granular activated carbon sample) were analyzed to choose an optimal adsorbent in the adsorption air-conditioning and freezing cycles. The relationships between the adsorber temperature, pressure in the adsorber, and the running time were discussed. The cycle time, coefficient of performance, specific cooling power, and the volume cooling power of each sample were also calculated and compared. The influence of the adsorbent layer thickness was analyzed for the optimal composite activated carbon. The results show that the heat transfer resistance is significantly reduced for the consolidated composite activated carbon. The mass transfer resistance is negligible except for the AC sample with an AC ratio of 33%. The optimal composite activated carbon is used in both air-conditioning and freezing cycles. The highest volume cooling power of composite activated carbon is 76.9 kW.m(-3), while the volume cooling power of granular activated carbon is about 10.6 kW.m(-3) in the air-conditioning cycle. After the reduction of the adsorbent thickness, the heat and mass transfer performance is improved, while the coefficient of performance decreases slightly.
