Abstract:This article concerns the time growth of Sobolev norms of classical solutions to the 3D incompressible isotropic elastodynamics with small initial displacements. Given initial data in H Λ for a fixed big integer k, the global well-posedness of this Cauchy problem has been established by Sideris and Thomases in [19] and [20, 21], where the highest-order generalized energy Ek(t) may have a certain growth in time. Alinhac [3] conjectured that such a growth in time may be a true phenomenon, where he proved that Ek(t) is still uniformly bounded in time only for 3D scalar quasilinear wave equation under null condition. In this paper, we show that the highest-order generalized energy Ek(t) is still uniformly bounded for the 3D incompressible isotropic elastodynamics. The equations of incompressible elastodynamics can be viewed as a nonlocal systems of wave type and is inherently linearly degenerate in the isotropic case. There are three ingredients in our proof: The first one is that we still have a decay rate of t− 3 2 when we do the highest energy estimate away from the light cone even though in this case the Lorentz invariance is not available. The second one is that the L∞ norm of the good unknowns, in particular, ∇(v+Gω), is shown to have a decay rate of t− 3 2 near the light cone. The third one is that the pressure is estimated in a novel way as a nonlocal nonlinear term with null structure, as has been recently observed in [16]. The proof employs the generalized energy method of Klainerman, enhanced by weighted L estimates and the ghost weight introduced by Alinhac. Abstract:We consider the Cauchy problem for 2-D incompressible isotropic elastodynamics. Standard energy methods yield local solutions on a time interval [ 0 , T / ϵ ] [0,{T}/{\epsilon }] for initial data of the form ϵ U 0 \epsilon U_0 , where T T depends only on some Sobolev norm of U 0 U_0 . We show that for such data there exists a unique solution on a time interval [ 0 , exp ⁡ T / ϵ ] [0, \exp {T}/{\epsilon }] , provided that ϵ \epsilon is sufficiently small. This is achieved by careful consideration of the structure of the nonlinearity. The incompressible elasticity equation is inherently linearly degenerate in the isotropic case; in other words, the equation satisfies a null condition. This is essential for time decay estimates. The pressure, which arises as a Lagrange multiplier to enforce the incompressibility constraint, is estimated in a novel way as a nonlocal nonlinear term with null structure. The proof employs the generalized energy method of Klainerman, enhanced by weighted L 2 L^2 estimates and the ghost weight introduced by Alinhac.

Abstract:This paper establishes bounds on norms of all orders for solutions on the global attractor of the 2D Navier-Stokes equations, complexified in time. Specifically, for periodic boundary conditions on [0, L](2), and a force g is an element of D(A((alpha-1)/2)), we show that there is a fixed strip about the real-time axis on which a uniform bound vertical bar A(alpha)u vertical bar < m(alpha)nu kappa(alpha)(0) holds for each alpha is an element of N. Here nu is viscosity, kappa(0) = 2 pi/L, and m(alpha) is explicitly given in terms of g and alpha. We show that if any element in A is in D(A(alpha)), then all of A is in D(A(alpha)), and likewise with D(A(alpha)) replaced by C-infinity(Omega). We demonstrate the universality of this 'all for one, one for all' law is also shown to hold for the union of a hierarchical set of function classes. Finally, we treat the question of whether the zero solution can be in the global attractor for a non-zero force by showing that if this is so, the force must be in a particular function class.

Abstract:We study the energy balance for the weak solutions of the three-dimensional compressible Navier--Stokes equations in a bounded domain. By constructing a global mollification combined with an independent boundary cut-off and then taking a double limit to prove the convergence of the resolved energy, we establish an - regularity condition on the velocity field for the energy equality to hold, provided that the density is bounded and satisfies . As a result of our new approach, we can avoid assuming additional regularity of the velocity near the boundary in order to deal with the boundary production due to the diffusion terms.

Abstract:For the initial boundary problem of the incompressible MHD equations in a bounded domain with general curved boundary in 3D with the general Navier-slip boundary conditions for the velocity field and the perfect conducting condition for the magnetic field, we establish the uniform regularity of conormal Sobolev norms and Lipschitz norms to addressing the anisotropic regularity of tangential and normal directions, which enable us to prove the vanishing dissipation limit as the viscosity and the magnetic diffusion coefficients tend to zero. We overcome the difficulties caused by the intricate interaction of boundary curvature, velocity field, and magnetic fields and resolve the issue caused by the problem that the viscosity and the magnetic diffusion coefficients are not required to be equal.

On the free-boundary Incompressible Elastodynamics with and without surface tension

Abstract:We consider a free-boundary problem for the incompressible elastodynamics describing the motion of an elastic medium in a periodic domain with a moving boundary and a fixed bottom under the influence of surface tension. The local well-posedness in Lagrangian coordinates is proved by extending <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2105.00596" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2105.00596">arXiv:2105.00596</a> on incompressible magnetohydrodynamics. We adapt the idea in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2211.03600" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2211.03600">arXiv:2211.03600</a> on compressible gravity-capillary water waves to obtain an energy estimate in graphic coordinates. The energy estimate is uniform in surface tension coefficient if the Rayleigh-Taylor sign condition holds and thus yields the zero-surface-tension limit.

Abstract:We establish the global existence and the asymptotic behavior for the 2D incompressible isotropic elastodynamics for sufficiently small, smooth initial data in the Eulerian coordinates formulation. The main tools used to derive the main results are, on the one hand, a modified energy method to derive the energy estimate and, on the other hand, a Fourier transform method with a suitable choice of Z-norm to derive the sharp $L^\infty $-estimate. We mention that the global existence of the same system but in the Lagrangian coordinates formulation was recently obtained by Lei (Global well-posedness of incompressible Elastodynamics in 2D, 2014). Our goal is to improve the understanding of the behavior of solutions. Also, we present a different approach to study 2D nonlinear wave equations from the point of view in frequency space.

Abstract:We consider the three dimensional free-boundary compressible elastodynamic system under the Rayleigh–Taylor sign condition. This describes the motion of an isentropic inviscid elastic medium with moving boundary. The deformation tensor is assumed to satisfy the neo-Hookean linear elasticity. The local well-posedness was proved by Trakhinin (J Differ Eq 264(3):1661–1715, 2018) by Nash–Moser iteration. In this paper, we give a new proof of the local well-posedness by the combination of classical energy method and hyperbolic approach. In the proof, we apply the tangential smoothing method to define the approximation system. The key observation is that the structure of the wave equation of pressure together with Christodoulou–Lindblad (Commun Pure Appl Math 53(12):1536–1602, 2000) elliptic estimates reduces the energy estimates to the control of tangentially-differentiated wave equations despite a potential loss of derivative in the source term. To the best of our knowledge, we first establish the nonlinear energy estimate without loss of regularity for free-boundary compressible elastodynamics. The energy estimate is also uniform in sound speed which yields the incompressible limit, that is, the solutions of the free-boundary compressible elastodynamic equations converge to the incompressible counterpart provided the convergence of initial datum. It is worth emphasizing that our method is completely applicable to compressible Euler equations. Our observation also shows that it is not necessary to include the full time derivatives in the boundary energy and analyze higher order wave equations as in Lindblad–Luo (Commun Pure Appl Math 71(7):1273–1333, 2018) and Luo (Ann. PDE 4(2):2506–2576, 2018) even if we require the energy is uniform in sound speed. Moreover, the enhanced regularity for compressible Euler equations obtained in Lindblad–Luo (Commun Pure Appl Math 71(7):1273–1333, 2018) and Luo (Ann. PDE 4(2):2506–2576, 2018) can still be recovered for a slightly compressible elastic medium by further delicate analysis of the Alinhac good unknowns, which is completely different from Euler equations.

Abstract:Presented are two results on the formation of finite-time singularities of solutions to the compressible Euler equations in two and three space dimensions for isentropic, polytropic, ideal fluid flows. The initial velocity is assumed to be symmetric and the initial sound speed is required to vanish at the origin. They are smooth in Sobolev space H-3, but not required to have a compact support. It is shown that the H-3 norm of the velocity field and the sound speed will blow up in a finite time.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the free boundary problem of incompressible elastodynamics, a coupling system of the Euler equations for the fluid motion with a transport equation for the deformation tensor. Under a natural force balance law on the free boundary with surface tension, we establish the well-posedness theory for a short time interval. Our method uses the vanishing viscosity limit by establishing a uniform a priori estimate with respect to the viscosity. As a byproduct, the inviscid limit of the incompressible viscoelasticity (the system coupled with the Navier-Stokes equations) is also justified. We point out that the framework of establishing the well-posedness for water wave equations simply does not apply here, even for obtaining a priori estimates. Based on a crucial new observation about the inherent structure of the elastic term on the free boundary, we successfully develop a new estimate for the pressure and then manage to apply an induction method to control normal derivatives. This strategy also allows us to establish the vanishing viscosity limit in standard Sobolev spaces, rather than only in the conormal ones (cf. Masmoudi and Rousset in Arch Ration Mech Anal 223(1):301–417, 2017; Wang and Xin in Vanishing viscosity and surface tension limits of incompressible viscous surface waves, 2015).

Exponential Stability of the Inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes-Vlasov System in Vacuum

Abstract:In this paper, we study the asymptotic behaviors of solutions to the inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes-Vlasov system in $\mathbb{R}^{3}\times\mathbb{R}^{3}$, where the initial fluid density is allowed to vanish. We establish the uniform bound of the macroscopic density associated with the distribution function and prove the global existence and uniqueness of strong solutions to the Cauchy problem with vacuum for either small initial energy or large viscosity coefficient. The uniform boundedness and the presence of vacuum enable us to show that as the time evolves, the fluid velocity decays, while the distribution function concentrates towards a Dirac measure in velocity centred at $0$, with an exponential rate. In order to overcome the degeneracy in the momentum equations, we develop an energy argument based on higher order functional inequalities designed for fluid-particle coupled structures.

Abstract:Alinhac solved a long-standing open problem in 2001 and established that quasilinear wave equations in two space dimensions with quadratic null nonlinearities admit global-in-time solutions, provided that the initial data are compactly supported and sufficiently small in Sobolev norm. In this work, Alinhac obtained an upper bound with polynomial growth in time for the top-order energy of the solutions. A natural question then arises whether the time-growth is a true phenomenon, despite the possible conservation of basic energy. In the present paper, we establish that the top-order energy of the solutions in Alinhac theorem remains globally bounded in time.
Inviscid Limit of Compressible Viscoelastic Equations with the No-Slip Boundary Condition

Abstract:The inviscid limit for the two-dimensional compressible viscoelastic equations on the half plane is considered under the no-slip boundary condition. When the initial deformation tensor is a perturbation of the identity matrix and the initial density is near a positive constant, we establish the uniform estimates of solutions to the compressible viscoelastic flows in the conormal Sobolev spaces. It is well-known that for the corresponding inviscid limit of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations with the no-slip boundary condition, one does not expect the uniform energy estimates of solutions due to the appearance of strong boundary layers. However, when the deformation tensor effect is taken into account, our results show that the deformation tensor plays an important role in the vanishing viscosity process and can prevent the formation of strong boundary layers. As a result we are able to justify the inviscid limit of solutions for the compressible viscous flows under the no-slip boundary condition governed by the viscoelastic equations, based on the uniform conormal regularity estimates achieved in this paper.

Abstract:This paper studies the global well-posedness of classical solutions to the isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations in 3D domains D under non-slip boundary conditions. D will separate into the inner and boundary parts along a free surface: In the inner part, the density is allowed to vanish and the gradient of it grows with an exponential rate when vacuum appears initially; while in the boundary part, no vacuum forms and the higher order derivatives of the density remain uniformly bounded. We utilize the Lagrangian coordinates introduced by Christodoulou-Lindblad to study such dichotomy.

Abstract:We consider the long-time behavior and optimal decay rates of global strong solution to three-dimensional isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes (CNS) system in the present paper. When the regular initial data also belong to some Sobolev space H-l(R-3)boolean AND(B) over dot(1,infinity)(-s)(R-3) with l >= 4 and s is an element of[0, 1], we show that the global solution to the CNS system converges to the equilibrium state at a faster decay rate in time. In particular, the density and momentum converge to the equilibrium state at the rates (1+t)(-3/4-s/2) in the L-2-norm or (1+t)(-3/2-s/2) in the L-infinity-norm, respectively, which are shown to be optimal for the CNS system.
