Abstract:We are concerned with the well-posedness of the density-dependent incompressible viscoelastic fluid system. By Schauder-Tychonoff fixed point argument, when $\|{1}/{\rho_0}-1\|_{\dot{B}_{p,1}^{{N}/{p}}}$ is small, local well-posedness is showed to hold in Besov space. Furthermore, provided the initial data $(1/\rho_0 -1,\upsilon_0,U_0-I)$ is small under certain norm, we also get the existence of the global solution.

Abstract:We consider the Cauchy problem for 2-D incompressible isotropic elastodynamics. Standard energy methods yield local solutions on a time interval [ 0 , T / ϵ ] [0,{T}/{\epsilon }] for initial data of the form ϵ U 0 \epsilon U_0 , where T T depends only on some Sobolev norm of U 0 U_0 . We show that for such data there exists a unique solution on a time interval [ 0 , exp ⁡ T / ϵ ] [0, \exp {T}/{\epsilon }] , provided that ϵ \epsilon is sufficiently small. This is achieved by careful consideration of the structure of the nonlinearity. The incompressible elasticity equation is inherently linearly degenerate in the isotropic case; in other words, the equation satisfies a null condition. This is essential for time decay estimates. The pressure, which arises as a Lagrange multiplier to enforce the incompressibility constraint, is estimated in a novel way as a nonlocal nonlinear term with null structure. The proof employs the generalized energy method of Klainerman, enhanced by weighted L 2 L^2 estimates and the ghost weight introduced by Alinhac.

Abstract:We establish the global existence and the asymptotic behavior for the 2D incompressible isotropic elastodynamics for sufficiently small, smooth initial data in the Eulerian coordinates formulation. The main tools used to derive the main results are, on the one hand, a modified energy method to derive the energy estimate and, on the other hand, a Fourier transform method with a suitable choice of Z-norm to derive the sharp $L^\infty $-estimate. We mention that the global existence of the same system but in the Lagrangian coordinates formulation was recently obtained by Lei (Global well-posedness of incompressible Elastodynamics in 2D, 2014). Our goal is to improve the understanding of the behavior of solutions. Also, we present a different approach to study 2D nonlinear wave equations from the point of view in frequency space.

Abstract:In this paper, by using time-weighted global estimates and the Lagrangian approach, we first investigate the global existence and uniqueness of the solution for the 2D inhomogeneous incompressible asymmetric fluids with the initial (angular) velocity being located in sub-critical Sobolev spaces H^s(ℝ^2) (0 < s < 1) and the initial density being bounded from above and below by some positive constants. The global unique solvability of the 2D incompressible inhomogeneous asymmetric fluids with the initial data in the critical Besov space (u_0,w_0)∈Ḃ_2,1^0(ℝ^2) and ρ^-1-1∈Ḃ_2/ε,1^ε(ℝ^2) is established. In particular, the uniqueness of the solution is also obtained without any more regularity assumptions on the initial density which is an improvement on the recent result of Abidi and Gui (2021) for the 2-D inhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes system.

Abstract:Inspired by a pioneer work of Andersson and Kapitanski (Arch Ration Mech Anal 247(2):Paper No. 21, 76 pp, 2023), we prove the local well-posedness of the Cauchy problem of incompressible neo-Hookean equations if the initial deformation and velocity belong to ( ), where and is respectively a scaling-invariant exponent for deformation and velocity in Sobolev spaces. Our new observation relies on two folds: a reduction to a second-order wave-elliptic system of deformation and velocity; and a "wave-map type" null form intrinsic in this coupled system. In particular, the wave nature with "wave-map type" null form allows us to prove a bilinear estimate of Klainerman–Machedon type for nonlinear terms. So we can lower -order regularity in 3D and -order regularity in 2D for well-posedness compared with Andersson and Kapitanski (Arch Ration Mech Anal 247(2):Paper No. 21, 76 pp, 2023).

Abstract:We prove the existence of both local and global smooth solutions to the Cauchy problem in the whole space and the periodic problem in the n -dimensional torus for the incompressible viscoelastic system of Oldroyd-B type in the case of near- equilibrium initial data. The results hold in both two- and three-dimensional spaces. The results and methods presented in this paper are also valid for a wide range of elastic complex fluids, such as magnetohydrodynamics, liquid crystals, and mixture problems.

Abstract:We consider the Cauchy problem for incompressible viscoelastic fluids in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^d$ ($d=2,3$). By introducing a new decomposition via Helmholtz's projections, we first provide an alternative proof on the existence of global smooth solutions near equilibrium. Then under additional assumptions that the initial data belong to $L^1$ and their Fourier modes do not degenerate at low frequencies, we obtain the optimal $L^2$ decay rates for the global smooth solutions and their spatial derivatives. At last, we establish the weak-strong uniqueness property in the class of finite energy weak solutions for the incompressible viscoelastic system.

Abstract:In this paper, we continue our previous study towards understanding the two-dimensional hydrodynamic systems describing Oldroyd type incompressible viscoelastic fluids. We will decompose the deformation tensor into the strain and rotation components and look at their distinct contributions and structures in the small strain ( with respect to viscosity) dynamics. In particular, we prove that there exist classical solutions globally in time if the strain component of the initial deformation is small enough, while we require no assumptions on smallness of the magnitude of the rotation component.

Abstract:We investigate global strong solutions for the incompressible viscoelasticsystem of Oldroyd–B type with the initial data close to a stable equilibrium.We obtain the existence and uniqueness of the global solution in a functionalsetting invariant by the scaling of the associated equations, where the initialvelocity has the same critical regularity index as for the incompressibleNavier–Stokes equations, and one more derivative is needed for the deformationtensor. Like the classical incompressible Navier-Stokes, one may construct theunique global solution for a class of large highly oscillating initialvelocity. Our result also implies that the deformation tensor F has the sameregularity as the density of the compressible Navier–Stokes equations.

Abstract:This is a survey paper. We mainly revisit those highlighted results on the global well-posedness of classical solutions near equilibrium for systems ofcompressible and incompressible elasticity. Due to the fact that the methods and ideas used for elasticity are closely related to those used for quasilinear wave equations, we will also revisit some corresponding highlighted results on quasilinear wave equations. We will try to pinpoint the key difficulties of those problems and the key methods to overcome them, and present direct and simple proofs as many as we can.We will also raise some open questions and make a few comments to attract the attention of young researchers.

Abstract:We are concerned with the global well-posedness of strong solutions to the Cauchy problem of nonhomogeneous Navier–Stokes equations with density-dependent viscosity and vacuum in R3. With the help of energy method, we prove the global existence and uniqueness of strong solutions provided that the initial mass is properly small. In particular, the initial velocity can be arbitrarily large. This improves He, Li, and Lü’s work [Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 239, 1809–1835 (2021)]. Moreover, we also extend the result of Liu [Discrete Contin. Dyn. Syst. B 26, 1291–1303 (2021)] to the case that large oscillations of the solutions are allowed.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove local well-posedness for compressible viscoelastic fluids of the Oldroyd model under the assumption that the initial density is bounded away from zero and global well-posedness near equilibrium. The proof of global well-posedness relies on some intrinsic properties of viscoelastic fluids and on a uniform estimate for a linearized hyperbolic–parabolic system with convection terms.

Abstract:We consider the system of partial differential equations governing two-dimensional flows of a robust class of viscoelastic rate-type fluids with stress diffusion, involving a general objective derivative. The studied system generalizes the incompressible Navier--Stokes equations for the fluid velocity $v$ and pressure $p$ by the presence of an additional term in the constitutive equation for the Cauchy stress expressed in terms of a positive definite tensor $B$. The tensor $B$ evolves according to a diffusive variant of an equation that can be viewed as a combination of corresponding counterparts of Oldroyd-B and Giesekus models. Considering spatially periodic problem, we prove that for arbitrary initial data and forcing in appropriate $L^2$ spaces, there exists a unique globally defined weak solution to the equations of motion, and more regular initial data and forcing launch a more regular solution with $\bs B$ positive definite everywhere.

Abstract:In this paper, the initial boundary value problem of the incompressible viscoelatic fluid system is considered. In the contrast to the previous work [Y. Chen and P. Zhang, Comm. Partial Differential Equations, 31 (2006), pp. 1793-1810], [F. H. Lin and P. Zhang, Comm. Pure Appl. Math., 61 (2008), pp. 539-558], [F. H. Lin, C. Liu, and P. Zhang, Comm. Pure Appl. Math., 18 (2005), pp. 1437-1471], and [Z. Lei, C. Liu, and Y. Zhou, Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal., 188 (2008), pp. 371-398], our main ingredient to solve the problem is to reformulate the original system along the particle trajectory. It is shown that in the so-called Lagrangian coordinate, the system is decoupled, and the well-posedness problem is reduced to the solvability of standard damped-wave equations with a no-slip boundary condition. Finally, we establish the global existence and exponential decay estimate for the equivalent system with the small and smooth initial data.
